“I lost my mum at five. I didn’t really have a smooth childhood. I suffered from depression and attempted my first suicide in childhood. It was actually the only but I was able to go through all that and I’m still here today.

“Some people had time to grow through life but I had to mature in time. Losing your mum at the age of five, you’re exposed to a lot of things you’re not supposed to experience. I started working at the age of 17.

“I worked as an usher at events. From there, I started modeling. Some of the things I did, I didn’t expect would get me to where I’m today, I was trying to save money here and there to exit the country and start working abroad.”

On the state of the nation, Isime said: “As much as Nigeria is, there are still opportunities. Sometimes I get tired of seeing what is going on with the government. I call myself mental health advocate because I preach it.

“I’m a staunch believer in meditation, I work out as much as I can and I go for therapy, which I just began not long ago. For someone like me who acts, hosts events, it takes a lot out of me. I act in series, TV, and cinema.”.

Asked how she manages to maintain her sanity, Isime who studied Social Work for two years at University of Lagos revealed that she goes for therapy.

”I go for therapy which I just began not too long.I have apps on my phone that helps me to balance my moods. Your mind is everything, if you get your mind right, you will get your life right”.

  • Get plastic surgery if you have to- Nancy Isime

Nigerian actress, model and presenter, Nancy Isime has said most people misinterpret what feminism truly means.

Speaking in a chat with Koko Magazine she said:”People are misinterpreting what feminism really stands for, in the sense that it is just women empowerment, as a woman you are powerful, you can do anything it doesn’t necessarily mean you drag a man’s role, I mean, I feel as women we are even more powerful if we understand our womanhood, and what we are capable of and how powerful it is to be a queen. You know, the more you realise, the more you understand that a feminist is just someone who wants not just equal rights, but someone who understand who she is and she wants to live her life, she wants to be known as a woman, as a strong woman for everything she stands for.

Asked about her stance on plastic surgery, Isime said:”On plastic surgery, go for it if you have to, do whatever you want to, I don’t really know how to tell people how to live their lives, if it makes you comfortable, if it makes you happier, by all means, darling, as long as you don’t ask me for money or anything else, you better do you”.

Isime also added that she hasn’t been a victim of sexual harassment.

“I haven’t really had any. Every set comes with its own little worst experience, I have come to realise. But, it all adds up and thats the reason why we are here today, so I can’t really say this is the worst, bad experiences are part of life”.

Isime shared the story against the backdrop of her recent Future Awards Africa plaque which earned her the TV presenter of the year award.

Recounting her tales on Instagram, she wrote:” On the day of the event, nothing really was going right…My dress, makeup artist, insane traffic. As at 9pm, I was still at a supermarket trying to buy tights for my outfit.

“Fast forward to walking into the event, late, battling a banging headache, exhausted, standing with my friends, trying to look for a seat. “And the nominees for On Air Personality are”- Mama Tobi announced. I just wanted to run out of the hall, my heart was pounding and I needed a freaking chair! So when my name isn’t announced I won’t be standing with people trying to read my emotions. “And the winner is…Nancy Isime!” Wait first, who?? .

“I have a defense mechanism to everything in life which is don’t let it sink in so it doesn’t get to your head or break you. So as I walked up on stage I kept blocking the realization of what just happened and even tried to crack a joke or two(Host mode?). And then I looked to the screen on the left and it hit me! “Winner-Nancy Isime-25years old”. You’re just 25 Nancy! And you’re out here doing the do, winning awards, hosting shows, addressing crowds, living a dream you never even dreamt of.

“At 17, I started doing ushering jobs but this was solely because I wanted to escape my dad’s errands and be able to make a few bucks for myself. Luckily I got my dad’s permission. Slowly it became so I could fend for myself. Sometimes I’d be in traffic going to Ikorodu till 12am, sometimes I’ll finish an ushering job at 2am and drag chairs together sleep, be up at 7am to go back home to bath and attend the next audition. Sometimes I’ll be out of cash and have to trek quite a distance under blazing sun. I didn’t mind. It was hard but I LOVED being a working class teenager?. The only mentally exhausting part was probably having to inflate my age every time to fit the job’s brief”.
