The Nigeria international and his representatives flew to Italy on private jet and a meeting is scheduled with Napoli officials later today.

Napoli beat Juventus on penalties to win Coppa Italia

Napoli stunned Juventus when they won 4-2 on penalties to claim the Coppa Italia on Wednesday after the two sides played to a 0-0 draw behind closed doors.

Paulo Dybala and Danilo missed Juve’s first two efforts in the shootout while Napoli converted all of their attempts to give Coach Gennaro Gattuso, the first major trophy of his coaching career.

It was the first title to be settled in the Italian season, which has just restarted after a three-month hiatus because of the coronavirus crisis.

Napoli nearly won it in stoppage time but were foiled by a superb double save by Juventus’s 42-year-old goalkeeper, Gianluigi Buffon.

    There was no extra-time.

  • Mertens fires Napoli to Italian Cup final, Inter Milan edged out

Dries Mertens fired Napoli to the Italian Cup final on Saturday after netting the goal which gave his side a 2-1 aggregate semi-final win over Inter Milan.

The goal, his 122nd, also made him the club’s all-time top scorer.

Napoli will now face Juventus in Wednesday’s final at Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Belgian Mertens, slotted home the vital goal for Napoli four minutes before half-time to make the score 1-1 on the night.

The scoreline gave them overall victory after a 1-0 first-leg win at the San Siro in February.

Christian Eriksen had levelled the tie for Inter straight from a corner in the second minute and the away side continued to dominate the first half.

But Mertens ended a lightning counter-attack to put the hosts through at the Stadio San Paolo.

“We wanted the final at all costs and we achieved that. Now we need to recuperate and be ready for the final in a few days,” said Lorenzo Insigne, who set up Merten’s winner.

Mertens, 33, overtakes Marek Hamsik and moves seven clear of Diego Maradona, who scored 115 goals in all competitions and won two Serie A titles and the UEFA Cup over his seven tumultuous years in southern Italy.

There were no fans in the stands at the San Paolo.

But public broadcaster RAI reported that a small number of Napoli supporters that had gathered outside the San Paolo set off fireworks throughout half-time in celebration of Merten’s goal and after the match.

Mertens moved to Napoli from PSV Eindhoven in 2013 and has become so settled in Naples that fans have nicknamed him ‘Ciro’, a hugely common Neapolitan name.

Sporting director Christian Giuntoli said pre-match that both club and player want to extend his contract, set to expire at the end of the month.

According to Le10 Sport, Napoli and Inter Milan also want to sign the Nigeria international.

Osimhen believes the former would offer him more playing time than the Premier League giants.

A talented forward, Osimhen has scored 25 Ligue 1 goals in 64 goals in the last two seasons.

Lampard calling Chelsea target ‘almost every day’

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has been in regular contact with Napoli star Dries Mertens, according to reports.

The Belgian is entering the final few months of his contract and has reportedly fallen out with Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis.

And transfer intermediary Vincenzo Morabito claims Chelsea are desperate to get his signature.

“Mertens had originally said he wanted to stay at Napoli, but then his lawyer started offering him to various international clubs, meaning something changed between the player and the Azzurri,” Morabito told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.

“I know this because I was working on the Olivier Giroud issue when he was meant to leave Chelsea in January, with a lucrative contract lined up for Mertens.

“Chelsea have now extended Giroud’s contract as a precaution, but they are very interested in Mertens and Lampard is calling him almost every day. I can see Mertens going to Chelsea.”

Insigne’s current deal runs to 2022 and negotiations are underway to extend it to 2025.

Griezmann saves Barca to earn first-leg draw at Napoli

Barcelona grabbed an away goal as they came from behind to draw against Napoli in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie in Italy.

Dries Mertens curled in from 18 yards in the first half to become Napoli’s joint top scorer of all-time, level with Marek Hamsik on 121 goals.

But Barcelona equalised after 57 minutes when Antoine Griezmann scored from Nelson Semedo’s low cross.

The visitors ended the game with 10 men as Arturo Vidal was sent off late on.

In the 89th minute, he fouled Fabian Ruiz, but then, after the Napoli man reacted, Vidal pushed his head into the midfielder’s face and was shown two yellow cards in quick succession.

The return match takes place at the Nou Camp on Wednesday, 18 March, although the Spanish La Liga leaders will also be without suspended midfielder Sergio Busquets as he picked up his third booking of this season’s tournament.

It came early in the second half when, with a foot raised, he caught Mertens, who limped off and had to be replaced shortly afterwards.

Barcelona had an injury worry of their own as centre-half Gerard Pique hobbled off in added time at the end of the match with an ankle injury.

Napoli had chances to go into the second leg in Spain with the lead but visiting goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen made two fine saves, denying Lorenzo Insigne and then Jose Callejon.

“They didn’t hurt us, they tickled us,” said Napoli boss Gennaro Gattuso. “It went wrong in one moment and they punished us.”

Napoli captain Lorenzo Insigne added: “We could have won, so we’re a bit disappointed. It was emotional to face players like [Lionel] Messi.”

  • Transfer: Chelsea to sign Napoli’s Dries Mertens

Chelsea are considering a late move for Napoli forward, Dries Mertens.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Mertens has emerged as a shocking transfer target for the Blues.

The Italian newspaper reports that the Belgium international is being discussed by Chelsea board as an option to bring in before Friday’s transfer deadline.

Mertens, 32, has scored four goals in 16 Serie A games for Napoli this campaign.

Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard recently admitted that the Stamford Bridge club need to sign a new creative forward following the departure of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid.

He said: “There will be discussions about where we can strengthen. “The transfer window will be a bit fluid.

“It is quite clear in the summer we lost Eden Hazard who has been a huge part of scoring and creating for us in the last few seasons. We need more competition in those creative areas.”

Manchester United have reportedly completed a £64m deal, to sign Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli.

Koulibaly has also been linked with Tottenham and Arsenal, but it is claimed that United have moved quickly to land the defender.

The 28-year-old is however not expected to join until the summer.

Italian journalist Fabio Santini broke the news, and speaking on the TV show Il Processo he said: “Napoli will sell Kalidou Koulibaly to Manchester United for a figure of around 70-75m euros. It seems all done.

“Naturally, such a deal will be closed only in June and certainly not in January in the winter transfer window.”

The signing would be the second time within a year United have spent big money on a centre-back, after Harry Maguire joined from Leicester City for £80m last summer.

Napoli have appointed Gennaro Gattuso as the Italian club’s new head coach following the dismissal of Carlo Ancelotti on Tuesday.

Ancelotti was sacked just hours after taking Napoli into the Champions League last 16 with a 4-0 win over Genk.

Gattuso, 41, previously managed AC Milan but left the Serie A club at the end of last season.

“We need to work hard, win back points and come through this tricky period,” said Gattuso.

“The aim is to recoup points and get back into the Champions League positions.”

Napoli are seventh in Serie A, eight points off the top four.

Gattuso played under Ancelotti at AC Milan and said: “He is like a father to me. He’s always been close to me and supported me. He’s won it all and I still have a lot to prove.”
