Benue has highest number of human trafficking – NAPTIP

Mrs Binta Bello, Director-General (D-G), National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), has said that Benue currently has the highest number of human trafficking cases in Nigeria.

Bello, who was represented by the Director of Intelligence, Mr Josiah Emerole, made the disclosure on Wednesday in Makurdi at the two-day workshop.

The D-G said that Edo was topping the list in human trafficking, but recently Benue overtook them on the list.

“Based on the number of rescued victims and arrested suspects, Benue indigenes are higher in number, both from the state and other states in Nigeria.

“The insecurity has increased the vulnerability in the state where parents are killed, leaving their children scattered and sold out, while some are being taken to other states to work in quarries while the people that took them there collect the money.

“We are trying to catch the children young and enlighten them about human trafficking so they can understand the red flag when being approached, which is why we have inaugurated these clubs in 10 schools out of the 50 earmarked for the STEAP project.

“This workshop is also aimed at teaching the principals the basic tools to understand the dangers of human trafficking and inculcating that knowledge to the students in their various schools and communities,” she said.

Principal Tilley Gyado of College Makurdi, Dr Emmanuel Zakaa, a participant at the workshop, thanked NAPTIP for such a wonderful initiative.

Zakaa said the initiative helped his students to know the dangers of human trafficking in their various clubs.

The principal further said the workshop is an eye-opener for principals in different schools to educate and guide the children not to always be fast in accepting help to get jobs from strangers or relatives.

It was organised for principals and vanguards under the School Anti-Trafficking Education and Advocacy Project (STEAP) in collaboration with NAPTIP and the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD).

NAPTIP sends strong warning to parents after rescuing abducted 5-year-old in Yobe

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has warned parents against entrusting their children to casual acquaintances, unvetted neighbours, or service providers.

The agency stressed that such actions can expose children to trafficking and abduction.

The caution was issued by NAPTIP Director-General, Hajia Binta Adamu-Bello, in a statement in Abuja on Friday.

According to Adamu-Bello, the warning followed the successful reunion of a five-year-old trafficking victim, with her parents in Damaturu, Yobe State.

The victim was reportedly abducted in Damaturu a few months ago by a commercial driver suspected to be involved in a child-theft ring.

She was later rescued in Abuja by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).

The NAPTIP D-G, represented at the reunification by Mr Saleh Zakar, Commander of the agency’s Yobe State Command, noted that the suspects had been arrested and were currently facing prosecution in Abuja.

“The handover of the child took place at the Yobe Government House in Damaturu, in the presence of the state Deputy Governor, Mr Idi Barde Gubana, and officials of the DSS.”

Adamu-Bello expressed gratitude to the DSS for its continued collaboration with NAPTIP, which she said led to the swift recovery and safe return of the child.

“It is dangerous to leave children in the care of strangers or send them on errands alone, especially at odd hours.

“Parents must remain vigilant and ensure the safety of their children at all times,” she cautioned.”

She reassured the public of NAPTIP’s commitment to protecting Nigerian children from trafficking and abuse.

Speaking after being reunited with his daughter, the victim’s father, Malam Ibrahim, lauded NAPTIP for its role in rescuing and caring for his daughter.

“When I saw my daughter, she looked neat and well taken care of. I sincerely thank the Director-General and the entire NAPTIP team. This agency is doing a wonderful job,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, Deputy Governor, Idi Gubana commended NAPTIP for its proactive counter-trafficking efforts and promised continued support from the Yobe State Government.

Akpi, in the suit marked  FHC/ABJ/CS/1354/2025 and filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja on July 9, 2025 claims that NAPTIP’s actions amounted to an unlawful and defamatory declaration.

The official Instagram handle of officialnaptip reads: “WANTED BY NAPTIP. Darlington Okoye, aka Speed Darlington, is wanted in connection with alleged offences including rape, cyberbullying, and cyberstalking.

According to singer turned social media influencer, declaring him wanted was baseless and has caused irreparable harm to his reputation and personal safety.

Akpi also prayed the court for a perpetual injunction restraining NAPTIP, whether by itself, its agents, servants, officers, operatives, or any individual acting on its instructions, from enforcing or giving effect tothe contents of the June 27 publication.

Recall that a viral video surfaced showing the moment  Darlington admitted to having sexual encounter with a minor. Following the outrage, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) intervened, but referred the case to NAPTIP for further investigation.

NAPTIP subsequently invited Darlington to appear at its Abuja headquarters on Friday for questioning regarding the alleged sexual assault.

However, in a recent post, the agency shared Darlington’s response wherein he said the invitation was too “sudden and urgent” and proposed a rescheduled meeting for June 26.

NAPTIP, however, rejected the request, emphasising that the original invitation had been sent on May 28, providing ample time for preparation.

The agency added it is a “matter of national importance,” and ordered Darlington to appear in person by 1:00 pm on Monday, June 2, at its Abuja office.

The singer had since come out to claim it was only a prank. He added that artists like himself need controversy to make a living.

This video is for all of you who are raging because I said I had a sexual encounter with a 15-year-old. I’m an artiste, we need controversy to eat. If you are not trending, you are not going to get booked for shows. I just dropped a song titled ‘Village Girl.’ It’s about coitus. I don’t do Christian music. When we release a song like that, we make sexual content to promote it.

“So, that was what I was doing. Don’t give it more light than it is supposed to have. But if any of you is offended, apologies… For intending artists, you have to be controversial. That was what you saw me doing in that video, selling my market. That’s what it is. And I hope you guys understand. Peace!

  • NAPTIP rescues 14-year-old victim of domestic abuse

NAPTIP rescues 14-year-old victim of domestic abuse

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) says it has successfully rescued a 14-year-old girl from Sokoto that was subjected to domestic abuse.

A statement by Mr Vincent Adekoye, NAPTIP Press Officer in Abuja on Saturday, identified the victim as the firstborn and only female child of one Malam Usman Aliyu.

The family were said to have fled from Dan Gyalla village, Faru ward, Maradun Local Government of Zamfara, as a result of violence from banditry to displaced persons (IDP) camp in Gwiwa Eka Area of Sokoto.

The victim was said to have been subjected to severe maltreatment, abuse, and exploitation after being recruited by a prominent Abuja socialite and wife of a highly placed public office holder in Sokoto.

According to Adekoye, the victim was recently discovered by concerned Nigerians within the neighbourhood, in a deplorable state, unable to walk, and showing signs of fainting due to extreme starvation and dehumanization.

Adekoye said that the concerned Nigerians promptly reported the situation to members of the  Network Against Child Trafficking, Abuse and Labour (NACTAL), who immediately escalated the report to NAPTIP.

He said that investigation revealed that the victim was employed to wash and other domestic work by the socialite woman, whom she got through a nurse, one Maryam, after approaching the IDP camp, in Sokoto.

“Maryam sought permission from Bashariyya’s mother, who allowed her daughter to assist for a day. Pleased with her work, Fauziyya offered to retain her services and promised to pay ₦10,000 monthly.

“Three months later, the suspect requested that Bashariyya follow her to Abuja, promising to enroll her in both formal and Islamic schools. She also pledged to remit ₦10,000 monthly to the family through Maryam.

“Sadly, three months later, the once dutiful and helpless girl was subjected to severe maltreatment. She was beaten, tortured, and locked in a dark room.

“One of Suspect’s maids was instructed to feed her only one cup of gari daily.

“A man was brought in to perform rituals, spraying what Bashariyya described as spiritual water on her body while she cried in pain, which caused burns all over her body.

“For several weeks, Bashariyya remained locked up, malnourished, unbathed, and emotionally distressed,” Adekoye quoted concern Nigerians as saying.

He stated that the same man came back and poured spiritual water on her hands and legs while crying and begging for mercy every day, without any response.

“Fearing that the poor girl might die in her house, the woman eventually returned her to Sokoto and handed her over to Maryam, claiming that Bashariyya had “spiritual issues” and that she had tried to help but failed.

He said that the victim was rushed to several hospitals in Sokoto for emergency medical care, but unfortunately, hospitals were reluctant to admit her.

According to Adekoye, when the suspect got information that NAPTIP had waded into the matter, some stern-looking locals were allegedly recruited by the suspect and prevented anyone from having access to the then-dying girl.

He said that the girl was eventually rescued by the Operatives of NAPTIP after the intervention of the Director -General of the agency, Hajia Binta Adamu-Bello, and she was airlifted to Abuja Friday evening.

Reacting on the Matter, the D-G expressed her displeasure on the issue, saying that “this is one of the highest forms of inhumanity to humans”.

“Bashariyya is exhibiting visible signs of physical abuse, and we can see scars, bruises (both fresh and healed), and burnt marks in her body.

“She is severely malnourished, dehydrated, and emotionally unstable at the moment. There are indicators of trauma, both physical and psychological, resulting from prolonged abuse and neglect.

“The alleged perpetrator exploited the vulnerability of an internally displaced family and manipulated the child’s labour under false promises.

“She was allegedly falsely accused, a common tactic used to justify violence and neglect against the vulnerable. The girl’s brutal treatment, abuse, starvation, and psychological torment, all under the guise of alleged accusations.

“The young girl’s condition highlights the urgent need for continued vigilance and intervention in cases of child abuse and trafficking in Nigeria.

“We are deeply committed to protecting the vulnerable and combating all forms of exploitation, including any fabricated and baseless accusations used to justify abuse,” she said.

The NAPTIP boss said that the agency remains resolute in its efforts to ensure justice for Bashariya and to rehabilitate her.

She appreciated the partnership and effort of NACTAL, as led by its National President, Abdulganiyu Abubakar, and urged other stakeholders to emulate such.

She equally urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to child trafficking, abuse, or exploitation to NAPTIP or its partners across the country.

In his remarks, NACTAL National President Abdulganiyu Abubakar, commended the D-G of NAPTIP for her timely response in rescuing the girl.

He assured the NAPTIP boss of more support in ensuring justice for the victim.
