    Nasarawa senator rejoins APC

    The Senator representing Nasarawa West Senatorial Zone, Ahmed Wadada, has officially rejoined the All Progressive Congress (APC) from the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

    Wadada had been a member of APC before joining SDP to contest the Nasarawa West Senatorial Zone elections in 2023 which he won.

    This is contained in a signed letter by the senator sighted NAN on Tuesday in Keffi local government area of Nasarawa state and  addressed to the APC Chairman, Tudun Kofar Ward, Keffi.

    NAN reports that in the letter dated Tuesday and titled “Notification of my return to the All Progressive Congress”, Wadada stated that the decision was taken after careful consideration and the desire to contribute to the growth, development and success of the party.

    Police rescue 2 abducted varsity students in Nasarawa

    The Police Command in Nasarawa State says it has rescued two students of the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) who were kidnapped on Sunday, March 30.

    SP Ramhan Nansel, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, stated this in a statement issued to journalists on Tuesday in Lafia.

    The PPRO said that the command received a distress call on Sunday, March 30, that a student’s lodge was attacked around 9:20 pm, and two students were abducted.

    “On March 30, at about 9:20pm, we received a distress call of an attack at a student lodge behind Nasara Estate, Tudun Kauri, Lafia.

    “During the attack, two students of the Federal University, Lafia, Sadiq Adinoyi and Sakina Adinoyi, were abducted.

    “Acting swiftly on the directive of Shetima Jauro-Mohammed, the Commissioner of Police, operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and ‘A’ Division, Lafia, were mobilized to track down the perpetrators,” he added.

    Nansel further explained that following technical intelligence the rescue team discovered that the victims were held in a forest behind the 500 housing unit along Doma road.

    “The team engaged them in a gun duel in the forest, and the police firepower overwhelmed them, and they fled in different directions and abandoned the victims who were safely rescued,” the police spokesperson said.

    He added that one suspect, Ibrahim Musa of Abuni village, Awe Local Government Area of the state was arrested at the scene.

    He said that the suspect had made a useful confession and was assisting the ongoing investigations.

    Nansel, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, appreciated the anti-kidnapping unit for their relentless efforts towards the rescue operation.

    He therefore, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling crime head-on and urged officers to remain steadfast in their mission to rid the state of criminal activities.

    Nasarawa United Football Club pulled off a stunning 1-0 victory against third-placed Rangers International Football Club in a thrilling Matchday 30 fixture of the 2024/2025 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

    The highly anticipated match, played behind closed doors at the Lafia Township Stadium on Friday, saw the home team seize the initiative, boosting their chances of escaping relegation.

    The decisive moment came in the 89th minute when Kabir Balogun calmly converted a penalty, sealing a crucial win for the Lafia-based side.

    This upset lifted Nasarawa United out of the relegation zone, moving them to 15th place on the NPFL table with 36 points.

    In spite of the loss, Rangers international remain in third place with 45 points.

    In a post-match interview, Nasarawa United’s head coach, Yusuf Salisu, admitted his team had been under pressure due to their precarious league position but was pleased with the result.

    He emphassed the importance of maintaining momentum in the remaining matches of the season.

    On the other hand, Rangers’ coach, Ekeh Ekenedilichukwu, acknowledged his team’s efforts but lamented the loss.

    He said that they had moved past the defeat and would focus on upcoming fixtures to strengthen their title hopes.

    Sule swears in 15 new commissioners in Nasarawa

    Gov. Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State on Friday swore in 15 new commissioners as members of the State Executive Council.

    Sule, while performing the ceremony in Lafia, urged the new commissioners to avoid all corrupt tendencies while discharging their duties.

    He said that his administration was anchored on accountability, transparency and prudent management of resources and would not tolerate corrupt tendencies.

    The governor said the appointments of the commissioners were made after wide consultation with stakeholders across the state.

    While congratulating the appointees, he said that their appointments were well deserved and wished them well in their new assignment.

    Sule charged the commissioners to be dedicated and result oriented in their duties.

    “I urge all of you to avoid all corrupt tendencies while discharging your duties,” he said.

    The governor restated his administration’s continued commitment to key into different policies and programmes that would have direct bearing on the lives of the people of the state.

    The governor, however, said that  the State House of Assembly had screened and confirmed 16 commissioner nominees but one of the nominees could not participate in the event due to some unspecified reasons.

    The new commissioners and their portfolios are Mr Yakubu Kwanta (Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development); Mr Tanko Tunga (Commissioner for Land and Urban Development); and Hajiya Munirat Abdullahi (Commissioner for Finance and Budget).

    Others are Mr Gabriel Agbashi (Commissioner for Science and Technology); Mr Isaac Danladi Amadu (Commissioner for Environment); Dr Ibrahim Tanko (Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism); while Dr John Mamman is Commissioner for Education.

    Also appointed are Mr Aminu Maifata (Commissioner for Local Government, Community Development and Chieftaincy Affairs); CP Usman Baba (Rtd.) (Commissioner for Security and Sundry Matters); Mr Mohammed Sani-Ottos (Commissioner for Commerce and Trade); and Mr Mohammed Agah-Muluku (Commissioner for Water Resources and Rural Development).

    They also include Mr David Moyi (Commissioner for Special Duties and Legal Matters); Dr Gaza Gwamna (Commissioner for Health);  Mr Judbo Hauwa-Samuel (Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice); and Muazu Gosho (Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport).

    Earlier, Dr Labaran Magaji, Secretary to the State Government, commended the governor for his developmental strides and purposeful leadership in the state.

    Responding on behalf of the newly sworn-in commissioners, Hajiya Munirat Abdullahi, the Commissioner for Finance and Budget, appreciated Gov. Sule for finding them worthy of the appointments.

    She pledged their readiness to discharging their duties as commissioners.

    NAN recalls that on Jan. 10, Gov. Sule submitted names of 16 commissioner nominees to the State Assembly for screening and confirmation.

    Mohammed Garba, member, representing Toto/ Gadabuke Constituency at the Nasarawa State House of Assembly says they will not reject any candidate chosen to contest the forthcoming LG polls in Toto LGA .

    He said that the stakeholders of APC) in the LG have agreed to work with any chairmanship aspirant picked out of the three names submitted to Gov. Abdullahi Sule ahead of the November 2 polls in the state.

    Garba, who is the Chairman, House Committee on Youth and Sports Development, stated this while briefing newsmen in Lafia on Saturday.

    He said that Sule had asked the stakeholders to forward the names of three persons to him to choose the flag bearer of  the party, if consensus failed.

    According to him, the statutory stakeholders of APC in the  LGA met on Friday, assessed and screened the CV’s of the five chairmanship aspirants.

    ” We have done justice by selecting the best three aspirants out of the five aspirants we have,” he said.

    Garba said that the stakeholders have agreed, during Friday’s meeting, not to go against the choice of Sule.

    “We are going to fully support the chosen one and ensure his victory at the polls.

    He said, ” Today’s briefing was necessitated by the follow up meeting held by APC statutory stakeholders of Toto LG  to choose the consensus candidate.

    “The Governor and the party have directed that stakeholders of each local government should to select consensus candidates for the chairmanship positions.”

    Nasarawa to hold LG polls November 2 – NASIEC

    The Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC) has fixed November 2, 2024, for elections of Chairmen and Councillors of the 13 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.

    The Chairman of the Commission, Ayuba Wandai, announced the date at press conference on Wednesday in Lafia, the state capital.

    He revealed that the tenure of the 13 Local government Chairmen and 147 Councillors ends on October 7, 2024 after serving for three years.

    He explained that the commission had earlier released a timetable for the conduct of the elections on August 31, but could not go on because of the case filed against the commission.

    “We were served with an originating summons by the Federal High Court, Lafia, by one Barr Paul John and 12 others against the commission and the Nasarawa State House of Assembly challenging the local government laws.

    “They were challenging the powers confirmed by the chairman of the commission to announce the results of the 13 LGAs and 147 electoral wards and declare the winners.

    “They were also challenging the powers conferred on the commission to fixed money for nomination forms and administrative charges.

    “Thank God, we won the case at the court, and they have also withdrawn their appeal at the Appeal Court, Makurdi, to clear the coast for the commission,” he added.

    Wandai further said that now that the case at the court was over, the commission has decided to continue with the process of the elections.

    He said that candidates from the various political parties should begin their campaign on Friday, October, 18.

    He further announced that all political parties interested in presenting candidates in the election should conduct their primaries and conclude all disputes that might arise, from Friday, October 11 to Thursday, October 27.

    He, therefore, promised that the commission would conduct a credible polls and provide a level playing field for every political party.

    Flood alert: NOA urges Nasarawa riverine communities to relocate to highlands

    National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged riverine communities in Nasarawa State on the fringes of River Benue to relocate to higher grounds in view of the impending flood.

    Mallam Lanre Onilu, Director – General of NOA, made the appeal during a  media and stakeholders engagement on “Flood Safety Alert” on Sunday in Lafia.

    According to him, the appeal to the riverine communities to move to high grounds became necessary considering the rising water level in River Benue due to the release of waters from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.

    Onilu, represented by Director, Planning, Research and Strategy, Alh. Yusuf Kobi, explained that the stakeholders engagement aimed at intensifying sensitisation for the flood frontline states to take precautionary measures to avert loss of lives and property in the event of flooding.

    “We are here to monitor flood safety alert campaign by our various offices in the 11 flood frontline states across the country, of which Nasarawa state is one.

    “We started with Kogi, followed by Edo, Anambra, Benue and here we are in Nasarawa today, the same campaign is on going in Rivers, Cross River, Adamawa and Taraba states respectively.

    “We are sensitising the riverine communities to be proactive, we should not allow what happened in 2012 and 2022 to happen again, where many lives were lost and thousands of houses were submerged,” he said.

    The director general, while appreciating the support of the stakeholders, called for a robust collaboration with the traditional rulers and the media to amplify the message in order to save lives and property.

    “I want to encourage our officers nationwide to take people’s response on issues, especially flood to enable us submit a comprehensive report to the government to mitigate impacts of flooding,” said.

    Also speaking, Dr Priscilla Gondoaluor, Director NOA, Nasarawa State, said that the state had experienced its share of the flood disaster within the last three years with attendant lost of lives and property.

    She appealed to flood- prone communities to take precautionary measures such as evacuation, cleaning of drains, building of flood defence barriers, as well as stockpile essential supplies like foods, water, and first aid kits at easily accessible location.

    “All our offices in the 13 LGAs  are already out particularly in the flood prone areas, creating awareness. Our jingles in english and in indigenous languages are already on air.

    “We are also embarking on advocacy visits to traditional and religious leaders,” she said.

    On his part, a traditional ruler, Mr Sunday Namo, the Aren Koron Kuje, said that giving the devastating effects of flooding, the traditional rulers in the state had taking it upon themselves to create awareness and educate their  subjects to relocate from valleys to high grounds.

    Namo commended NOA for the initiative and said that it would add impetus to the flood awareness already started by the traditional rulers in the state.

    “It’s indeed one of the cardinal objectives of the traditional rulers in the state to sensitise and educate our subjects on issues of great importance as this flood safety alert,” he said.

    Nasarawa: Man commits suicide  over ‘wife’s infidelity’

    Gabriel Magaji, a 38-year-old resident of Masaka in Karu LGA of Nasarawa, has committed suicide over alleged infidelity by his wife.

    According to Daily Trust, Magaji committed suicide after he found out that his wife slept with his friends for money.

    Nansel Ramhan, spokesperson of Nasarawa police command, said Magaji’s corpse was found on Monday in a classroom at Crystal School, Masaka.

    “On Monday at about 7am, a report was lodged by a staff member of Crystal School Masaka in our office in the Masaka division that a yet-to-be-identified man was found hanging in one of the classes in Crystal School Masaka,”

    “Upon receipt of the complaint, the DPO led his men to the scene and untied the corpse and took it to the General Hospital, Mararaba, where he was confirmed dead by the doctor. So, the corpse was deposited in the morgue.”

    Ramhan said the police are still conducting an investigation to uncover the cause of his death.

    However, Daily Trust reported that a note was found on the victim at the time of his death by an unnamed individual who claimed to be familiar with the development.

    Magaji committed suicide after he found out that his wife frequently slept with his friends in exchange for money.

    “When he confronted his wife, she said she was doing that because he couldn’t afford to bring food to the table,” the source told Daily Trust.

    “According to the wife, the friends of his husband often had sex with her and gave her money, of which she uses the money to buy food items that even the late husband and their three kids eat.”

    Police arrest 10 for allegedly stealing 45 children, recover 6

    The Police Command in Nasarawa State has arrested 10 suspected members of a child theft and sale syndicate, who allegedly stole no fewer than 45 children.

    The Commissioner of Police, Shehu Nadada, made the disclosure while parading the suspects at the command’s headquarters in Lafia, on Friday.

    According to the commissioner, police operatives attached to Keffi Division on routine patrol on Jan. 10,  rescued a man from mob action and upon enquiry discovered that he allegedly abducted a five-year-old boy in Keffi.

    He said that the suspect later confessed to being a member of a syndicate that specialised in child theft and sale of same to the highest bidder.

    Nadada said that further investigation led to the arrest of nine other members of the syndicate.

    He said that further analysis on their mobile phones indicated that they had stolen and sold 45 children, who have been illegally adopted by unsuspecting member of the public across the country.

    The commissioner, who did not state the period when the children were stolen, said that most of them were stolen from Abuja, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Plateau and Niger states.

    He said that six of the children had been recovered from Abuja, Ondo and Lagos State, while effort was ongoing to arrest more accomplices and recover more of the stolen children.

    He further said that the suspects confessed to selling off many children at different prices, from N350,000 to N1.5 million depending on their age and gender.

    Nadada disclosed that the suspects usually conspire with some social welfare officers to produce fake documents that facilitated the sale of the children to willing buyers.

    The commissioner charged parents to pay more attention to their wards while calling on those seeking to adopt children to be wary of criminals.
