    Breaking: Army arrest spiritual head of Nasarawa deadly militia group

    The Nigerian Army has arrested Angulu Idaku, the spiritual head of a deadly militia group in Nasarawa, terrorizing the State and its environs.

    TheNewsGuru reports Idaku was arrested when troops of 177 Guards Battalion was on a raid operation at Ugya village in Toto Local Government Area of the State.

    The camp of the deadly armed militia group was also destroyed, according to Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Texas Chukwu.

    Items recovered included seven locally made guns, twelve cartridges, 200 rounds of 7.62MM special ammunition, 76 rounds of 7.62MM NATO special ammunition and four knives.

    Others items recovered included fifteen cutlasses, 6 mobile phones, one DSTV decoder set, and 4 solar panel sets.

    Meanwhile, the Army once again urged members of the public to report any suspicious activities to security agents.

    …as Ramadan fast begins on May 27

    The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), has said the lunar crescent of Ramadan will appear in Nigeria on Friday, May 26.

    The appearance of the moon would signify the start of Ramadan on Saturday, May 27.

    However, the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar will make the announcement for Muslims to commence the fasting.

    NASDRA’s Head of Media and Corporate Communications, Dr. Felix Ale, in a press statement on Tuesday, said the appearance of the Ramadan crescent will be recorded between hours of 6:49pm and 7.54pm on May 26.

    He also said the conjunction of the moon would occur at about 8.44pm on 25th May 2017.

    According to Ale, Yola, Maiduguri, Gombe, Calabar and Port Harcourt will be the first to witness lunar crescent at about 6.04pm concurrently to 7.54pm, while Sokoto state will be the last to see the crescent at about 7.24pm to 7.54pm.

    The NASDRA spokesman added that all other states will experience the lunar crescent between 6.04pm and 7.54pm on May 26, 2017.

     

  • Federal Medical Center, Keffi, confirms suspected case of Lassa fever

    Dr. Giyan Joshua-Ndom, the Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi, Nasarawa state, has confirmed that a patient at the center was suffering from a disease suspected to be Lassa fever.

    Joshua-Ndom disclosed this on Friday that the center had reported the matter to the Ministry of Health as well as the Centre for Diseases Control, Abuja.

    “It is true that a suspected case of Lassa fever had been discovered at the center with a male patient being its victim.

    “But, I want to use this medium to appeal to patients and members of the public to remain calm as necessary steps had been taken to avert the spread of the virus.

    “The patient with the suspected case of Lassa fever had been separated from other patients and we are on top of the situation to curtail the spread of the disease,” he said

    The medical director reaffirmed the commitment of the center to continue with projects that had direct bearing on the lives of doctors, other staff, and Nigerians at large.

     

  • Association demands increased funding for healthcare

    The Coalition of Faith-Based Associations in Nasarawa State has called for increased budgetary allocation to the state’s healthcare sector.

    The group said the demand, if granted, would effectively tackle child and family health issues.

    The leader of the Coalition in the state, Hajiya Rakiya Jibril-Ali, made the call on Tuesday during an advocacy visit to the state Commissioner for Health in Lafia.

    Jibril-Ali, who is also the Amirah of the Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN), said that the aim of the visit was to synergies with the state government toward improving healthcare delivery.

    “We want to partner the Nasarawa State Government by appealing for increased budgetary allocation for the health sector and to enact laws that will help improve child and family health.

    “We are focusing mainly in areas of nutrition, routine immunization, family planning and child killer diseases,” she added.

    She said that the group would pay an advocacy visit to Gov. Umaru Al-Makura on the same issue, adding that the support from the governor will facilitate the activities of the group.

    Jibril-Ali said the coalition was ready to always complement government’s effort toward improving healthcare delivery in the state.

    Responding, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Daniel Iya, lauded the initiative of the coalition in addressing issues of child and maternal health.

    Iya, represented by the Permanent Sectary, Dr Hamza Gayam, added that all the issues raised by the group were already being handled by the ministry.

    He said that the state government was working toward increasing budgetary allocation of the health sector to effectively pay attention to areas that were previously neglected.

    The membership of group cuts across FOMWAN, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), among others.
