    Man, 30 hangs self to death in Nasarawa public school

    A 30 year-old young man, James Samuel has hanged himself to death in a classroom of Government Secondary School Gurku, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa.

    The deceased, a Tiv and an indigene of Benue State committed the suicide on Friday night.

    The remains of the deceased was discovered by one of the residents in the area, who is also a police officer, serving in Abuja, who quickly reported the matter to the Gurku Police Outpost.

    The police found two pictures of himself at tender age and that of his mother at the scene, but no suicide note.

    The body of the late James Samuel was brought down in presence of the police and taken out of the government facility by family members.

    Chief Samuel who is the Tiv community leader in Gurku and also the biological father of the late James cried with the brothers and sisters of the deceased.

    According to him, “My late son attended Government Secondary school Gurku, he was a farmer, welder and a traditional drummer.

    ” He was popular among his peers. He is a Tiv, but understands Gbagyi, Jaba, Hausa and Gwandara tribes.

    “I learnt that this is the first suicide in the history of Gurku land and that it is taboo here”. He said

    The traditional ruler of Gurku, Alhaji Jibrin Waziri who spoke through an aide, Madakin Gurku, Zubairu Adamu, confirmed the incident and said that he visited the scene.

    A member representing Nasarawa central in the Nasarawa House of Assembly, Mr. Sule Adamu, has died of coronavirus.

    Governor Abdullahi Sule state disclosed this on Sunday while in a chat with newsmen.

    He said the House of Assembly would be shut down and all the lawmakers will be quarantined to contain the spread of the virus in the state.

    BREAKING: Nasarawa records first COVID-19 case

    Nasarawa state has recorded its first confirmed case of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

    Governor Abdullahi Sule confirmed the development while briefing newsmen in Lafia on Tuesday.

    Sule said the patient is a 25-year-old lady who recently travelled from Kano state to Kokona local government area of the state.

    The governor said samples were recently taken from five person for testing at the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) designated laboratory, the results came back on Monday, April 27, with four coming out negative, while one was positive.

    “Four out of the five, including the lady that was said to have ran away from Abuja and isolated in Akwanga, their results came out yesterday and were negative.

    “However, we are not that lucky with the fifth case. It is sad for me to announce that Nasarawa State has its first case of COVID-19,” he said.

    Sule added that the lady has been evacuated from Kokona to an Isolation Centre in Lafia where there are better facilities to manage her case.

    He explained the that family members of the patient have been quarantined and would be tested to ascertain their status.

    He, however, decried the attitude of people towards health personnel working to contain the virus.

    The governor recalled that efforts by health personnel to get sample of the confirmed case was initially resisted by family member, who hid the lady.

    “I want to use this opportunity to encourage our people, especially the traders that continue to travel to some of these high risk places like Lagos and Kano to desist as they could be doing more harm to their family than even the state.

    “So I encourage our people to bear with the government against all these travels at this moment especially to areas of high risk,” he said.

    He also encouraged residents to quickly embrace testing if they noticed any symptoms, adding that “COVID-19 is not a death sentence.”

    The governor, therefore, urged the people of the state to continue to adhere to all safety directives, especially physical distancing and maintaining personal hygiene.

    I have sleepless nights as COVID-19 cases increase daily in Abuja – Nasarawa Gov

    Nasarawa Governor, Abdullahi Sule has revealed the increase of COVID-19 cases in the FCT is giving him sleepless nights.

    He said that the proximity of Karu local government area of the state to FCT Abuja is the source of his worry.

    He spoke on Friday while appearing on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) programme in Lafia.

    According to him: “As a matter of fact, it doesn’t excite me everyday I hear there are increasing cases of COVID-19 in FCT because 80% of the lower class working in Abuja in the hospitals, clinics or hotels lives in Nasarawa state.

    “So we are getting ready more than states that even have index cases, the reason being that one of the most densely populated area we have in Nasarawa state is Karu and that is the reason while we decided to have a lock down in Karu.

    “Majority of the people here have one thing or the other to do in Abuja. A lot of them do travel out of the country, so we took some steps like so many other states. We decided to lock down Karu. We went ahead to restrict movement to the state capital and other major areas in Nasarawa state. We decided to also close down the markets, churches and mosques,” he said

    Gunmen kidnap Nasarawa governor’s adviser

    Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule’s Special Adviser on Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Community Development John Waje Mamman has been abducted by gunmen.

    The attackers stormed Mamman’s Dari country home in Kokona Local Government Area of the state about 8pm on Saturday and whisked him away.

    A source told The Nation that due to the intense heat, the governor’s aide and his associates were outdoors but within his compound when the kidnappers invaded the house and took him away.

    It was gathered that the abductors surrounded the house and started shooting rapidly, sending Mamman’s friends scampering for safety.

    Mamman himself could not escape and the hoodlums seized him and fled with him.

    As at the moment of filing this reporters, the kidnappers had not established any contact with his relatives.

    Nasarawa govt approves new safety measures for footballers

    Nasarawa State Government on Tuesday announced the approval of new safety measures to protect footballers from sudden health hazards while on the pitch of play at the Lafia Township Stadium.

    Othman Bala-Adam, the state’s Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, told newsmen in Lafia that the measures included the provision of facilities and employment of staff.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Chineme Martins, a defender with Nasarawa United Football Club, slumped to death at the stadium on Sunday.

    The incident occurred during a Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Match Day 23 fixture between Nasarawa United and Katsina United.

    Martins later died after all efforts to resuscitate him failed.

    “A standard well-equipped ambulance has been approved to be stationed at the stadium for all home matches of both Nasarawa United FC and Nasarawa Amazons FC henceforth, so as to quickly take care of any emergency during a home fixture.

    “The state governor, Abdullahi Sule, has also approved the recruitment of adequate medical staff and the training and retraining of the medical staff attached to both teams,’’ Bala-Adam said.

    He added that the governor emphasised on attaching medical doctors with considerable experience in sports injury to both teams.

    Bala-Adam described the death of Martins as saddening and unfortunate for all football lovers in the state.

    He said Gov. Sule has pledged to ensure the incident never repeated itself.

    The commissioner disclosed further that the governor has also approved the purchase of two new buses for both Nasarawa United and Nasarawa Amazons.

    “A Toyota Hilux Van was also approved for the management of Nasarawa United,’’ he said.

  • Dethroned Emir Sanusi arrives in Loko

    Dethroned Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi, has arrived Loko, a town in Nasarawa State, to which he was banished, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports.

    A NAN correspondent reports that the dethroned monarch arrived his new abode around 3 a.m. Tuesday morning.

    Alhaji Abubakar Ahmed Sabo, the traditional ruler of Loko, who confirmed the development, said that Sanusi arrived his palace “around 3 a.m. on March 10″.

    The first class traditional ruler, however, said that the press would not be allowed to interview the dethroned emir.

    “Yes, Emir Sanusi is in my palace. He arrived this morning around 3 a.m., but no one will be allowed to speak with him,” he said.

    NAN recalls that the Kano State Government dethroned Sanusi on Tuesday, March 9.

    The government hinged its action on the former CBN governor’s “outright disregard for the state government and Kano Emirate’s traditional norms”.

    Gunmen abducts Perm. Sec. in Nasarawa

    Alhaji Jibrin Giza, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works in Nasarawa State was in the early hours of Sunday, abducted by yet to be identified gunmen.

    Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Bola Longe, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lafia.

    Longe told NAN that the permanent secretary was abducted by gunmen from his residence at Shabu, a suburb of Lafia at about 12:40 a.m., to an unkown destination.

    According to the CP, the DPO in the area had already mobilised some officers and men who are on the trail of the fleeing abductors and their victims.

    Longe added that he had ordered the DCP Operations, Officer in Charge (OC) of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), OC Counter Terrorism, and Commander Police Mobile Force 58, to comb the area to ensure the safe rescue of the victim and arrest of his abductors.

    He also vowed that the command would not rest on its oars until the victim regains his freedom.

    Longe further said that the abductors were yet to establish any contact with the victim’s family.

  • Nasarawa confirms outbreak of Lassa fever

    The Nasarawa State Government has confirmed an outbreak of Lassa fever in the state.

    Mr Ahmed Yahaya, the state Commissioner for Health, said this while speaking with journalists on Monday in Lafia.

    Yahaya said that a patient, resident at Mararaba Gurku in Karu Local Government Area (LGA) of the state was diagnosed with the disease adding that the case was confirmed by doctors at Garki General Hospital, Abuja.

    According to him, a team of health personnel has been drafted to the area to monitor and possibly quarantine those who had contact with the patient to curtail spread.

    Yahaya said that the state government has put in place mechanism in secondary and tertiary health facilities to handle any case of outbreak and curtail spread of the disease in the state.

    “We are aware of the outbreak and have taken measures by deploying doctors and tools to ensure we curtail further spread of the diseases,” he said.

    The commissioner advised residents to ensure good environmental hygiene and keep rodents away from their food sources.

    He also advised them to lookout for symptoms and visit health facilities for prompt treatment.
    Yahaya said all health facilities have been put on red alert to check for the outbreak.

    He pointed out that the ministry had sustained sensitisation campaigns through the media on how to prevent the disease.

    Dr Hassan Ikrama, Chief Medical Director (CMD), Dalhatu Arab Specialist Hospital (DASH), Lafia, said that the hospital was prepared to curtail spread of the disease.

    Ikrama said the management has trained health personnel on how to identify and handle patients with suspected cases of the disease.

    According to Ikrama, the state government has provided protective kits for health personnel as well as drugs for the treatment of the disease.

    He also said that an isolation centre has been provided at the hospital for patients with suspected cases of the disease.

  • Police arrest monarch over alleged kidnapping

    The Police Command in Nasarawa State has arrested Alhaji Dalhatu Abubakar, Village Head of Mangora Goma Tunga village of Nasarawa Local Government Area, for allegedly aiding and abetting kidnapping.

    The Commissioner of Police, Bola Longe, stated this on Friday in Lafia while presenting the village head alongside 80 other suspected criminals to newsmen.

    According to Longe, the police arrested the monarch following credible intelligence on his involvement in kidnapping activities along Loko in Nasarawa/Toto axis.

    “He is a notorious criminal with a long and inglorious reputation, operating in most clandestine manner; and he has been on our wanted list,” he said.

    He said from Oct. 22 to Dec. 2019, the command had arrested 46 suspected kidnappers and 35 suspected cult members.

    The police, the said, also recovered nine firearms; 34 ammunition; three tricycles; two motorcycles and three vehicles within the period.

    The commissioner attributed the success story of the command to the support it received from the public, urging the people to sustain the support in order to make the state safer.

    He warned criminal elements in the state to either repent before being caught or relocate from the state.

    According to him, the police are more determined now than ever to tackle them to a stand still.
