    Nasarawa commissioner’s abductors demand N30m ransom

    Former Commissioner for Higher Education in Nasarawa State Clement Uhembe has been abducted from his residence in Lafia, the state capital.

    His abductors have asked for N30 million.

    The heavily-armed kidnappers attacked Uhembe’s home about 8.30pm on Tuesday.

    The ex-commissioner is a senior lecturer in the department of political science at the Federal University, Lafia.

    His wife Amarya told newmen that the abductors numbering about 10, broke into their home when her husband was sleeping, and took him away.

    She said, “They came and started knocking forcefully at the door. When I noticed they were armed men, I quickly tried to close the door, shouting for help before my husband came to join me in the struggle to close the door.

    “We succeeded in closing the door but the gunmen kept pushing until they used some objects to break the door and gained entrance,” she said.

    In another development, in Zamfara State, gunmen have abducted a ward chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC) Alhaji Sani Dangwaggo.

    The abductors who came on motorcycles seized Dangwaggo, chair of Gamji ward in Bakura council area of the state.

    No one was physically hurt in the incident, a source said.

    Gunmen kill one, abduct 10 in Nasarawa

    One person has been killed and 10 abducted by gunmen in Kana community, Udege Development Area of Nasarawa State.

    The Chairman of Nasarawa Local Government Area, Muhammad Sani Otto, disclosed this on Tuesday to newsmen.

    He said the gunmen in their numbers invaded the community, shooting sporadically in the air which resulted in the death of one person, injuring many, after which they seized 10 persons.

    Otto added that security has been beefed up in the area to avoid a recurrence while efforts have been heightened to rescue the abducted persons.

    This comes a weeks after 26 officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) were kidnapped along Mararaban-Udege road in the state.

    The officials were travelling for a training programme at FRSC Academy in Udi when they were attacked by suspected bandits

    Shut down your private hospitals or be sacked, Nasarawa govt tells doctors on payroll

    The Nasarawa State Government has resolved to sack any medical doctor who is on government payroll and still run a private hospital.

    The state Commissioner for Justice, Abdulkarin Kana, who spoke to journalists yesterday after the state executive council meeting, added that they must close down their private hospitals.

    He said the action would allow them concentrate on their responsibilities and avoid diverting patients to their private hospitals

    The state executive council also approved the establishment of the state Bereau for Rural Development to FastTrack development at the grassroots in the state.

    The state Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dogo Shammah said the newly created bureau would have responsibilities of managing all rural roads, electricity and ensure supply of water to rural areas across the state.

    Other responsibilities of the bureau according to the information commissioner include upgrading and maintenance of feeder roads among others.

    Shammah noted that the council also approved the introduction of special scholarship scheme to encourage state indigenes who are studying medical related courses in other to reduce the high rate of inadequate medical personnel in the state.

    Nasarawa sets up committee to sack 1251 teachers

    The Nasarawa State Government has inaugurated a committee to disengage about 1251 teachers for not possessing the requisite teaching qualification.

    Executive Chairman, Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board (NSUBEB) Mohammed Dan’azimi who inaugurated a seven (7) man implementation committee to disengage the said teachers without a requisite teaching qualification, said the action is in line with the federal ministry of education directives.

    Inaugurating the committee Friday in Lafia, the board executive chairman who was represented by the secretary of the board Hajia Hashiya Ahmed stresses that the committee has been given the mandate to take every necessary step to ensure that, the affected teachers are registered with National Teachers Institute (NTI) and Collage of Education Akwanga to obtain requisite teaching qualification.

    According to a press release signed by the public relations officer of the board, Gana Lawal Ahmed quoted the secretary as explaining further that there are about 1251 teachers without requisite teaching qualification still teaching in our primary schools across the state.

    “I, therefore, charge you to live above board and justify government confidence reposed on you by carrying out your assignments with due diligence devoid of any sentiments or favour,” the chairman said.

    He reiterated that in carrying out the teaching profession in Nasarawa State, there will be no tolerance for quackery, just as no teacher will be allowed to teach in any of our primary schools without a requisite teaching qualification.

    In his remarks, the implementation committee and Director, planning, Research and Statistics, Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board, Mal. Isah Eyah thanked the management of SUBEB for finding them worthy to these onerous tasks and promised to justified the confidence reposed on them.

    It will be would be recalled that the Minister of Education Mallam Adamu Adamu warned unqualified teachers to either acquire a requisite qualification or disengage from the teaching profession on or before December 31, 2019.

    The composition of implementation committee members are, Director, Planning, Research and Statistics SUBEB to served as chairman, Education Secretary Karu member, State NUT chairman member, other committee members include State AOPSHOP secretary member, State NAPTAP secretary member, State NASU Chairman member and SUBEB Zonal Officer, Lafia Secretary.

  • Nasarawa Assembly suspends LG boss over insurbordination

    The Nasarawa State Hosue of Assembly has suspended the Chairman of Nasarawa Local Government in the state, Alhaji Mohammed Sani Ottos, over alleged insubordination.

    The House also suspended the Deputy Chairman, Karu Local Government, Lawal Yakubu Karshi, over the same allegation.

    Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Speaker of the House, announced this after the Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government, Alhaji Mohammed Alkali, moved a motion on the activities of the affected council officials at an emergency sitting in Lafia on Monday.

    Abdullahi alleged that the chairman of Nasarawa local government and Deputy Chairman, Karu Local Government abandoned their official duties to attend a court case involving former Secretary to the Government of the State (SSG), Alhaji Aliyu Ahmed.

    He said the act was a disservice and a constituted insubordination.

    ” The Chairman of Nasarawa Local Government Council is hereby suspended, pending the investigation of his act of insubordination.

    “The Deputy Chairman of Nasarawa Local Government is hereby directed to take over the affairs of the council on acting capacity with immediate effect

    ” The Deputy Chairman, Karu Local Government, should also proceed on suspension.

    ” The Commissioner of Police is hereby directed to provide adequate security cover to acting Chairman of Nasarawa Local Government while the investigation lasts, ” he said.

    The speaker expressed dismay at how the Nasarawa Council boss allegedly abandoned his people on the eve of election to attended a court case that did not concern government, instead of staying around to assist security agents in ensuring peaceful Nasarawa Central constituency by-election.

    Mr Daniel Ogazi, the Deputy Majority Leader of the House, who seconded the motion moved by Mohammed Alkali and other lawmakers who contributed during the sitting, supported the move.

    They noted that the house would never give room for anyone to rubbish the image of the institution.

    The Speaker also set up a seven-man committee to investigate the two affected officials.

    ” The members of the committee are Dr Peter Akwe to serve as Chairman of the committee; Mr Mohammed Alkali is the Deputy Chairman of the committee while others are Mohammed Omadefu, Mohammed Agah Muluku, Aliyu Dogara, Danladi Jatau while the Deputy Clerk of the House, Ibrahim Musa, is the Secretary of the Committee.

    He gave the committee three months to submit its report.

    APC wins Nasarawa by-election

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Ismail Danbaba, winner of the Nasarawa State constituency bye-election.

    Declaring the result on Saturday night, the returning officer, Iiyasu Umar said Danbaba scored 7,475 to defeat Bage Nuhu of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who got 4,608 votes.

    Umar stated that 12,217 total votes were cast and valid votes were 12,083, with 134 votes rejected.

    Speaking after he was declared winner, Danbaba promised effective representation to his people and thanked the people for voting for him.

    The election followed the death of Sulieman Adamu of the APC who it allegedly died of COVID-19 in April 2020.

    Gunmen capture Nasarawa monarch, demand N7m

    Some gunmen have kidnapped a traditional ruler in Nasarawa State, Alhaji Mohammed Dankawo.

     

    Dankawo, who is the Ardo Udege in the Udege Local Council Development Area of Nasarawa State, was abducted from his residence.

     

     

    Kidnappers had demanded a ransom of N7m for the release of the traditional ruler.

     

    The Nasarawa State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Alhaji Mohammed Hussaini made this known.

    “The traditional ruler of Udege development area, Ardo Udege, Alhaji Mohammed Dankawo, has been kidnapped and still in the custody of his abductors. The kidnappers are demanding the sum of N7m before they could release him”, he told Punch.

    Nasarawa Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Abdulkarim Kana, has tested positive for COVID-19.

    According to The Nation, Commissioner for health, Pharmacist Yahaya Ahmed, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Lafia, the state capital.

    “Yes I’m aware. I can confirm that, however, he is in self-isolation at home and is in a stable and clear condition. We are taking care of him”, Ahmed said.

    The Attorney General is a member of the State Task Force on COVID-19.

    NSCDC arrests man for defiling three-month-old Nasarawa baby

    The Nasarawa State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has arrested a 27-year-old man, Ahmadu Yaro, for allegedly defiling a three-month-old baby in Adogi village, Lafia Local Government Area of the state.

     

    The Deputy State Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr Bisi Olugboyega, who paraded the suspect on behalf of the Commandant, Mr Mahmud Fari, said, “We have tracked and apprehended the 27-year-old suspected rapist, Ahmadu Yaro.

     

     

     

    “He is presently in custody for allegedly defiling a three-month-old baby in Adogi village, Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.”

     

    He noted that the suspect would be prosecuted when the command completed its investigation.

     

    Olugboyega stated that the suspect was arrested on June 22, 2020, around 3.28am in Adogi.

     

    He added that Yaro had confessed to the crime.

     

    The NSCDC deputy commandant said the suspect was detained two years ago by the community for a similar offence, adding that Yaro was left off the hook without the involvement of security agencies.

    “The suspect is believed to be a one-man gang claiming partial mental disorder, which is not yet confirmed or established,” he added.

    Two National Youth Service Corps members who met and fell in love during their service year will wed by 5am on Saturday (May 30) to avoid crowd in line with COVID-19 safety protocols.

    The wedding of Felicia Haruna from Kaduna State and Mark Makafan from Kogi State is scheduled to hold at St Peter Claver Catholic Church Cathedral, Kafanchan, Kaduna State.

    The Director General, National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim, on Thursday blessed the couple’s intention, urging them to accept and tolerate themselves as husband and wife.

    The NYSC Director-General, who was returning from Gombe State, where rainstorm destroyed the corps Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development centre, stopped in Jos to bless the would be couple.

    He urged other corps members to emulate the duo as they plan to settle down after service.

    The News Agency ot Nigeria reports that Ibrahim tossed a nuptial drink for the couple and shower them with gifts, including money.

    The Plateau State Coordinator of NYSC, Caroline Embu, said the scheme was happy for the corps members.

    Embu stated the scheme’s joy knows no bound as such does not happen all the time.

    “I am exceptionally happy because this doesn’t come often and when it happens and it is right under our nose, it brings joy to both NYSC and members of staff here,” said the Director.

    She advised other corps members to give it a chance and a try out relationship without despising humble beginnings.

    Makafan said that he met Haruna during their orientation course at the NYSC Orientation Camp.

    He said: “We started a relationship that is leading to marriage, while in camp as members of Platoon 7.

    “The moment I met her, something told me that she is my wife.

    “As faith would have it, we will be husband and wife this Saturday.”

    On her part, Haruna said she was one of the ladies that had made up their minds that they would not date a corps member.

    She added: “But I am not just dating but marrying one.

    “The moment he came to me something told me that he is more than a friend.

    “And by grace of God I am going to spend the rest of my life with.”
