Gov el-Rufai presents pathway to restructure Nigeria

Further to his continuing advocacy for the implementation of restructuring as a nation-building opportunity, Malam Nasir El-Rufai has called for a collective national endeavour to secure the necessary constitutional amendments.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the Kaduna State Governor made the call while also presenting a roadmap to restructure Nigeria on Tuesday in a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Muyiwa Adekeye.

“Restructuring is a pragmatic imperative for a more efficient governance structure in our country. It will enable a departure from excessive centralisation, rebalance the federation and locate powers and responsibilities in the tier of government best able to effectively discharge them.

“There is a unique opportunity for all Nigerians who believe in the merits of restructuring to work together to realise it. As a fundamental redesign of the anchors of the Nigerian state, restructuring can be achieved only by constitutional means and processes. This means that the National Assembly is the primary platform for attaining it, followed by the necessary concurrence by two-thirds of the state Houses of Assembly in the country, and presidential assent.

“Every part of the country has representation in the National Assembly. States and interest groups that wish to advance restructuring can persuade any of their federal legislators to present the draft bills in the Report of the APC True Federalism Committee, for instance, or any other relevant draft legislation for consideration and passage by the federal legislature.

“This is the productive direction to consider, rather than revel in idle doubt and pessimism when the national interest is calling for active engagement.

“There is no extra-constitutional route to resolving a constitutional matter on which there exists reasonable consensus and for which draft bills have been prepared. As a body of Nigerians elected from constituencies across the country, the National Assembly is the veritable constitutional conference. Therefore, it is not helpful to seek to traduce its legitimacy, especially by persons who do not have any electoral mandate.

“Pragmatism advises cooperation in attaining this collective endeavour. However, recent comments from some regional groupings make it difficult to escape the suspicion that certain persons regard the realisation of restructuring as a moment of peril.

“They appear to fear that the possibility of restructuring being actualised may erode their political viability or remove a platform for grandstanding. We assure them that they can always find new causes to pursue, post-restructuring, like working with others to ensure that the newly devolved governance structures work efficiently across the federation to deliver better outcomes for all our people,” the statement reads.

BREAKING: Dignitaries throng Zaria as El-Rufai installs Ahmad Bamalli as 19th Emir of Zazzau

The Ancient City of Zaria on Monday was thrown in a Celebration Frenzy as Exdiplomat Ambassador Ahmad Nuhu Bamalli was presented with the staff of office as the 19th Emir of Zazzau.

In an elaborate ceremony, Bamalli was appointed on October 7 to succeed Shehu Idris who died in September was installed by the Kaduna State governor Malam Nasir El-rufai. His Predicessor Shehu Idris reigned for 45 years.

The diplomat is said to be the first Emir from the Mallawa ruling house in 100 years.

Speaking during the installation ceremony which was held in Zaria, Kaduna state, el-Rufai asked Bamalli to discharge his duties bearing in mind that his era is different from that of his predecessors.

El-Rufai, who described the occasion as a historic moment, said he is the “first elected public servant to appoint an Emir of Zazzau in an independent, democratic setting”.

“I am delighted to join the people of Zazzau Emirate for the presentation of the Staff of Office to His Highness, Ambassador Ahmad Nuhu Bamalli, the 19th Emir of Zazzau, the first born after independence. This is a historic moment,” el-Rufai said.

“Your Highness ascends the throne in a much changed era to that of your illustrious predecessors. These are more modern times, with fresh opportunities and many old and new challenges. Ours is an incredibly young state, with 89% of residents being younger than 35 years.

“We are grappling with expanding the opportunities for jobs, sound education and decent healthcare that can help channel this youthfulness as a positive resource. Some of our communities are menaced by security challenges

“We need better data about who lives in the state, what they do and what facilities exist or are required in the communities in which they reside. The traditional institution can be a vital partner in addressing these challenges.

“This occasion of handing over the Staff of Office to the 19th Fulani Emir of Zazzau is taking place exactly 100 years since the colonial Governor of Northern Region, Herbert Symonds Goldsmith, unjustly deposed your grandfather, Emir Aliyu Dan-Sidi of blessed memory.”

The governor said his administration is working on a new law to strengthen and enhance the capacity of the traditional institution by providing clearly defined roles for the Emir in community governance.

“The new law will also legislate clear dynastic succession order in all emirates and chiefdoms with more than one ruling house,” he said.

He called on all those who contested the Emirship to “accept the will of Allah” and join hands with Bamalli.

“I also appeal to the title holders, district heads, members of the Emirate Council, the good people of Zazzau Emirate, and indeed all the citizens of Kaduna State to rally around our new Emir by extending to him their full support and cooperation,” he said.

Impact of #EndSARS protest will be severe – says El-Rufai

The Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai has said it is an understatement to describe the last few weeks occasioned by the #EndSARS protest as challenging moments for Nigeria.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports El-Rufai stated this on Monday during a meeting of the Northern Governors Forum and the Chairmen of Traditional Councils of the 19 northern states.

In his remarks, he said the economic damage from the recent tragic events is sure to exacerbate the shrinkage unleashed by COVID-19 and that the impact will be severe.

    Read remarks below:

Remarks by Malam Nasir El-Rufai, Governor of Kaduna State, at the meeting of the Northern Governors Forum and the Chairmen of Traditional Councils of the 19 northern states, held at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna, on Monday, 2nd November 2020

    PROTOCOLS

    1. I have the honour of welcoming you all to this combined meeting of the elected leaders of government and the heads of the traditional institutions in all the 19 states of the North and the Federal Capital Territory. We warmly welcome the Chief of Staff to the President and other members of the Federal Government delegation that is joining us in this most important meeting.

    2. In our view, it is an understatement to describe the last few weeks as challenging moments for our country. A cry by the youths for reform of policing has somehow snowballed into tragic events, and an unprecedented challenge to the authority of the Nigerian state. Public and private property have been wantonly violated, in criminal actions that have been encouraged and fuelled by previously unseen levels of incitement.

    3. The economic damage from the recent tragic events is sure to exacerbate the shrinkage unleashed by Covid-19. The impact of this on jobs and livelihoods will be severe. The crisis has also exposed the worrying ascent in public discourse of a new sort of relativity that is able to justify anything. Amidst the mayhem in many parts of the country, there has been a shocking absence of a collective will to stand up for law and order, and those that are at the frontline of law enforcement.

    4. Many of the northern states are confronting a variety of security challenges. Criminal activities by bandits threaten both rural and urban communities. Bandits have openly tried to crush the rural economy by attacking farmers in their fields, and in their homes. These criminals continue to menace some highways. Our experiences in Kaduna State are encapsulated and summarised in the document prepared by our Commissioner of Internal Security and Home Affairs that we will circulate for our Governors and Royal Fathers to study in their spare time.

    5. We welcome the intensification of ground and air action against the bandits, and thank the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff, the Chief of Naval Staff, the Chief of the Air Staff, and the Inspector-General of Police for these operations. We urge the military and the Police to further amplify these operations and continue relentlessly to wipe out the bandits.

    6. Is it not time to make the establishment of state police a key part of policing reforms? Has the recent crisis not exposed again the inadequacy of the numbers, ordinance, training and unitary structure of the Police in a federation? Is this not an opportunity for a redesign of the security architecture in a collaboration between the states and the national government to vastly expand police numbers, equipment and technology?

    7. The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria envisaged the need for this by creating the Nigeria Police Council in section 153(1)L and defined the membership to include all State Governors in the Third Schedule thereof. In this regard, I wish to seize this opportunity of the presence of this high-level federal delegation to appeal that the quarterly meetings of the Police Council be initiated and sustained so that the important issues to improve national policing effectiveness be interrogated, debated, agreed and addressed.

    8. As we deliberate today, it is our hope that the discussions will reflect on the specific impact of recent events on our region and what we can do to mitigate the damage and press forward in securing our communities and advancing social and economic development.

    9. I hope that this initiative of engagement between the Federal Government and Northern State Governors and Traditional Rulers will be sustained. I therefore wish to suggest that we hold this joint meeting at least twice every year to discuss security and other emerging issues to promote peace and progress in our region.

    10. I wish us all a productive meeting, and safe journeys back to our respective destinations. Thank you all for honouring us with your presence and contributions. Thank you for listening.

REVEALED: Governor El-Rufai to create 2 emirates out of Zazzau

Information from impeccable sources from Kaduna State Government House reveals that there are plans by Governor Nasir El-Eufai to explore the powers given to him by Article II of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to create two additional emirates out of Zazzau.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) gathers the development follows the allege refusal by the kingmakers to recommend the Governor’s candidate, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli (Jnr) as a possible successor to the late Emir of Zazzau, Shehu Idris.

The Emirates are Kaduna and Kudan, implying that there will now be three Emirates in Zazzau which are Zaria, Kaduna and Kudan.

Already, a draft bill for the amendment of Emirates and Chieftaincy bill is being prepared for onward transmission to the State Assembly for amendment.

Article II of the Constitution of Nigeria vests the executive power of the State in the Governor and charges him with the execution of state law, alongside the responsibility of appointing state executive, diplomatic, regulatory, and judicial officers subject to the approval of the Assembly members.

If the bill is assented, Magajin Garin Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamali would be the Emir of Kaduna, while Yarima would likely be in Zaria and Iya Aminu at Kudan.

  • Southern Kaduna Crisis, Nasir El-Rufai and his Traducers: What Next?, By Danjuma Musa

Southern Kaduna Crisis, Nasir El-Rufai and his Traducers: What Next?, By Danjuma Musa

    By Danjuma Musa
For those that continue to wonder in utter bewilderment why the Southern Kaduna crisis seems unresolvable, the simple reason is the hardline position of the some tribal development associations and their umbrella body, the Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU) to the issue of Hausa/Fulanis, though long settled in the region, are denied recognition as bonafide indigenes and often derogatorily referred to as “settlers”. That position is not likely to change soon considering the hardening body language of the irredentist SOKAPU, which indicates that the only acceptable condition for peace in Southern Kaduna, agreeable to them, is the “immediate expulsion” of “settlers” like the Professor Kabir Matos’, and the Sanusi Maikudis’, either by extermination or by threat of violence,a tactics obviously learnt from the Israelis that randomly expelled Palestines as part of its scorched earth annexation policy.
Jonathan Asake, the rabid President of SOKAPU, denied registration by Corporate Affairs Commission(CAC) due to its divisive political activities, pointedly told Sanusi Maikudi on Channels Television “go back to your State”, a statement that bears testimony to the fact, that every other issue about the crisis, flows from or revolves around this fundamental issue.
SOKAPU, over the years has undoubtedly succeeded through sustained campaign of half truths, outright lies and misinformation, in portraying the crisis as genocide and land grab by a rampaging militia allegedly backed by the state, even when no piece of land is occupied by local or foreign forces. It has definitely surpassed Joseph Gooebbels, Hitler’s notorious propagandist in notoriety, with the strategy that has perfectly enabled it to easily hoodwink the evangelical Christians that already believes in a Hausa/Fulani “Islamization” agenda. Cashing in on these strong religious/political sentiments, it has aggressively pushed several misleading narratives; portraying Christians as victims, a people that have been more sinned against, than have sinned, exaggerating skirmishes as atrocities, while bluntly refusing to admit heinous crimes perpetuated by the indigenous people against the so called “settlers”. But while the largely illiterate Hausa/Fulanis, lacks the media manipulative skills of the more educated indigenous Christians, they always exert on their own terms their pound of flesh, which generates media attention due to the disproportionate proportions.
But like every lie, the one sided narrative by SOKAPU, that obviously finds the prospect of peace disturbing was eternally vanquished by the 22nd August, 2020 peace agreement between the various communities- the Atyaps, the Hausas and the Fulanis, in the Atyap Chiefdom. The first narrative eloquently demolished by the good people of Atyap Chiefdom, is that land grab or occupation by local or foreign forces, that SOKAPU continues to shout wolf over is a blatant lie. The clincher, was the strong repudiation of violence, and the admittance that the various communities engaged in killings, another fact that SOKAPU stridently continues to deny, and more fundamentally, the acknowledgment by the Atyaps of the inherent rights of the Hausa/Fulanis to reside on Atyap land, with all the benefits, in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution as amended, to the embarrassment of SOKAPU that wants them out. The 22 August 2020 Agreement in every respect equates with the Good Friday Agreement, that restored peace to Northern Ireland,if not far more significant in the sense that it liberated truth, long suffocated by the false narratives bandied over the years unchallenged by SOKAPU.
The peace deal between the various communities in the Atyap Chiefdom is a strong repudiation of all that SOKAPU stands for, which is why SOKAPU and the other extremists are expected to fight back, and to celebrate to the high havens any breach of peace in Atyap Chiefdom.
Clearly, the main losers in the new peaceful Southern Kaduna, a rainbow region of the Atyaps, the Hausa, the Fulanis, Jabas, the Bajjus, the Kagomas etc, are not only the irredentist SOKAPU, and their co- travelers that share their “Southern Kaduna for only indigenous people” ideology, but their Abuja and Lagos based sponsors, who had subterraneanously cashed in on the exaggerated crisis to demonize El- Rufai, who they perceive as an obstacle to their ambitions, the reason why SOKAPU, should make hay, while the sun shines, because the because the transactional relationship sooner than later will come to an end.
Thankfully the march towards a peaceful new Southern Kaduna, going by the commitment to peaceful coexistence from Atyap Chiefdom in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area to Zipak Chiefdom in Jema’a Local Government Area, will not only deny oxygen to the well “organized opponents” of Governor Nasir El- Rufai of Kaduna State, who have used the “crisis” to throughly harass him, but will also raise the urgent question, of what next for his traducers?
It will be wishful thinking or a delusion to conclude that those opposed to El-Rufai, will suddenly go to sleep, believing that would be suicide, because the 2023 stakes remains very high, and El- Rufai in spite of public pronouncements backing power shift to the South, is still considered an obstacle, a threat by the Bola Tinubu political group to the ambition of their mentor, whose presidential ambition is an open secret. The recent disinvite of El- Rufai by the Nigerian Bar Association(NBA) as a speaker during its recently concluded NBA conference was financially orchestrated by forces that saw the possibility of political mischief by “demarketing” him, so as to diminish his chance in whatever way 2023 plays out.
El-Rufai’s opponents are expected to creatively continue to exploit every opportunity to “deal” with their nemesis, including the campaign to deny him visa to Britain. But if only they bothered to learn from their previous futile efforts , when they sponsored the likes of Senator Shehu Sani and Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi to challenge his every programme, towards creating disaffection between him and the people of Kaduna State, as they plotted his defeat for the 2019 elections, which spectacularly failed, they would have changed strategy. The problem with El-Rufai’s political opponents, is that they constantly miscalculate and underrate his political skills.
Fighting for the “people” has huge material and political benefits, especially in Southern Kaduna where political belligerence is hugely rewarded and applauded. For stance, the main reason why Architect Bala Bantex was rejected by his kit and kins, was his refusal to be antagonistic to El- Rufai and why Senator Danjuma La’ah, who has bluntly refused engaging with the Kaduna State Government on matters of policy and especially security, was rewarded with an undeserved second term, that was denied a more productive Esther Nnenadi Usman, whose only crime was being married to a Muslim.
Between 2015-2019 as deputy governor, Bantex only managed to “command” some respect from the zone, when he reportedly slapped El-Rufai, an incident which though never occurred, indicated the kind of tumultuous relationship that “his people” tragically expected of him, without thinking of the potential consequences, like impeachment or total sidelining in governance.
Moving forward, SOKAPU, has clearly done irreparable damage to the fortunes of the region, with its message of hate and exclusion, but it can still redeem itself by jumping on the Peace train, failure to,guarantees it an ignoble place in history.
Postscript: Those who called General Chukwuemeka Okonkwo, the Commander of Operation Safe Haven Jos, overseeing peace operations in Southern Kaduna a lier and other unprintable names for telling the world, that all the communities in Southern Kaduna are involved in killings, owe him an unreserved apology with the admittance by the various communities in Atyap Chiefdom that they have all killed.

More troops, police deployed to Kaduna Airport Road, other strategic locations

At the instance of Governor Nasir El-Rufai, troops of the Nigerian Army and police operatives have been deployed to Kaduna Airport Road on Sunday in Kaduna.

The deployment also covers some strategic locations, where aggressive operations by troops and police are in progress.

The deployment was aimed at beefing up security around the Kaduna Airport Road, Kaduna-Birnin Gwari Road Roundabout and the Nigerian Defence Academy Road.

The Nigerian Air Force will retain the duty of securing the immediate premises of the Kaduna Airport, its staff quarters and other critical aviation assets in the airport.

A meeting was held between the state government, the Army, Police, Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and community leaders at Kutungare village, Igabi Local Government Area of the state.

At the meeting, Gov. El-Rufai, represented by Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, challenged the community leaders to cooperate with the newly deployed troops and operatives.

“We are here to see for ourselves the ongoing aggressive fighting patrols by the newly deployed troops and police operatives in these locations.

“This will complement the Nigerian Air Force, who are working in the immediate airport environment, while the troops and operatives cover the general area,” the governor said.

In his remarks, the Garrison Commander, 1 Division Nigerian Army, Brig-Gen Olusegun Abai, said communities have roles to play in enhancing security through information sharing and working harmoniously with security agencies.

He added that the army will be open to the communities in line with the principles of civil-military relations.

El-Rufia commended the Army for deploying troops to Juji village in Chikun LGA, following security challenges in the village and adjoining communities on the Kaduna Eastern Bypass.

The governor also praised the community leaders for their support to security agencies and the government.

He charged them to sustain the security information sharing mechanism in place, and also urged recourse to the law by aggrieved individuals and groups.

NBA conference: Deposed Emir Sanusi takes sides with El-Rufai

The deposed Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II has taken sides with Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai for the withdrawal of the Governor’s invitation to take part in the 2020 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the deposed Kano Emir, who departed Lagos State for Kaduna State on Sunday morning, on a visit to northern Nigeria first time after his dethronement in March, felt Governor El-Rufai was not accorded the right to fair hearing, and he hoped the matter does not tear the NBA apart.

Sanusi stressed that the invitation granted Governor El-Rufai would have actually given the NBA a rare opportunity to grill the Kaduna State Governor. He argued that El-Rufai always has opinions, and that people will either like him for it or hate him for it.

“You know if you have an opinion, people will either agree with you or disagree with you but a man ‎who has an opinion that can be agreed with or disagreed with is always better than a man who has no opinion at all.

“Nasir always has opinions. He knows what his positions are on things. He says that position very clearly. People will like it, some people will not like it and that is what some people call controversial and being controversial is actually having an opinion. To be honest I do not want to join issues because we have already heard the views of Nigerians and the response.

“Everybody has a right to a fair hearing, and most importantly for me, if you feel that the Governor of Kaduna State is not doing right you should invite him to your covers and ask him to explain what he is doing. Tell him what you think is doing wrong and you will learn something from him and he will learn something from you.

“‎That is the best way to handle issues like this. But again, I have seen the response from different branches of NBA and I hope this matter will not be turned to ethnicity and religious matter. It should be a matter of principle,” Sanusi said.

  • Muslim group flays NBA over El-Rufai’s saga

Muslim group flays NBA over El-Rufai’s saga

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), in Lagos on Friday described the withdrawal of invitation to Nasir el-Rufai to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) conference as “parochial, myopic and jejune”.

MURIC director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, in a statment, said that the NBA, as a learned group should know better, adding that it was high level prejudice.

“The NBA yesterday removed the name of El-Rufai from the list of speakers at its 2020 Virtual Annual General Conference (AGC).

“I describe NBA’s action as parochial, myopic and jejune. It is high level prejudice. NBA as a group of learned literati should know better.

“The fact that NBA took the ill-advised step on account of a petition written by a group, Open Bar Initiative exposes NBA’s impatience, intolerance and self-conceit,” he said.

MURIC, however, called on all lawyers from the North not to allow this to slide, adding that any action of injustice must spark a reaction if tyranny is to be stopped in the world.

He urged the NBA to rescind its decision, adding that injury to one is injury to all.

The leadership of the NBA withdrew the invitation extended to el-Rufai to participate in the association’s forthcoming annual general meeting.

In a resolution at the NBA national executive council meeting on Wednesday, the association said the decision would be communicated to the governor.

“The National Executive Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association at its ongoing meeting resolves that the invitation to the Kaduna State Governor, H.E. Nasir El-Rufai by the 2020 Annual General Meeting Conference Planning Committee be withdrawn and decision communicated to the Governor,” the NBA said via its Twitter handle.

El-Rufai was among the guest speakers slated to participate in a session titled ‘Who is a Nigerian?… A Debate on National Identity.’

Others also billed to speak at the session are Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers; Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra and vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party at the 2019 election; Tunde Bakare, a cleric and chairman, African Advisory Council of the Royal Commonwealth Society; Oby Ezekwesili, an activist and former federal minister; and Salamatu Suleiman, the immediate past ECOWAS commissioner for political affairs, peace and security.

Those billed to speak at the conference include Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; Femi Gbajabiamila, the Speaker of the House of Representatives; and Tanko Muhammad, the Chief Justice of Nigeria; Olusegun Obasanjo, a former president; Ike Ekweremadu, former deputy senate president; and Abubakar Malami, the Attorney-General of the Federation.

The 60th NBA annual general conference, its first-ever virtual event, is themed ‘Step Forward.’

Responding, Gov. el-Rufai, accused the NBA of embracing a “one-sided narrative” after the lawyers’ body bowed to pressure and withdrew his participation from next week’s NBA annual general conference.

In a statement on Thursday, el-Rufai said he had accepted the invitation to participate in the conference as part of his commitment to having a national conversation and the evolution of a national consensus.

“NBA platform or not, these worthy conversations must continue. He will continue to make his voice heard on the things our country needs to do for its progress,” Muyiwa Adekeye, Mr El-Rufai’s aide, said in the statement.

“While the decision about who speaks at its event is clearly the NBA’s, Malam El-Rufai wishes to make clear that he did not seek the platform and is not agitated that he has one less speaking engagement.”

  • BREAKING: NBA member lawyers will hear from me, El-Rufai reacts

BREAKING: NBA member lawyers will hear from me, El-Rufai reacts

Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai has reacted to the withdrawal of his invitation to speak at the 2020 Annual General Conference (AGC) of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the Governor’s reaction is contained in a statement released on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Muyiwa Adekeye.

According to the statement, the petition used to pull down Governor El-Rufai from speaking at the NBA’s AGC contained defamatory statements. The statement vowed NBA member lawyers who are involved will get appropriate response from the Governor.

The statement reads: “When lawyer friends requested Malam Nasir El-Rufai to accept the invitation of the NBA to participate in a panel discussion on national identity, he accepted as part of his commitment to having a national conversation and the evolution of a national consensus.

“NBA platform or not, these worthy conversations must continue. He will continue to make his voice heard on the things our country needs to do for its progress.

*While the decision about who speaks at its event is clearly the NBA’s, Malam El-Rufai wishes to make clear that he did not seek the platform and is not agitated that he has one less speaking engagement.

“However, the circumstances of the last few days warrant some comments. That a professional organisation has elected to endorse a one-sided narrative on a profound national issue is something that its members may wish to reflect upon.

“For an association, whose bread and butter is about justice to make a ruling based on the stridency of people who lampoon judicial processes against certain individuals without hearing the other side is odd.

“It bears noting that in its response to pressure, the NBA leadership has signaled an unfortunate embrace of injustice, unfairness, absence of fair hearing and total disregard for the rule of law.

“The defamatory statements in the petition is another matter entirely, and they will get the appropriate response.

“Malam Nasir El-Rufai has taken several actions on the security, institutional and technology fronts to address the legacy of violent strife in the state. He is the governor that made permanent military and police bases a reality in southern Kaduna, after close to 40 years of waiting.

“He is the governor that set up a Peace Commission to nudge communities to embrace their responsibility to live in peace and harmony.

“He has done this with equality of concern for all residents, not just those with access to the media and who are able to mobilise sentiment even when they are part of the problem. His investments in building a constituency for peace, anchored on the rule of law, respect for the citizenship rights of everyone and an embrace of the obligations of a common humanity will continue.

“Those who have chosen to pretend that it is only Kaduna State that is experiencing the security challenges in North-West, or that it is only one part of the state that is affected can enjoy the illusion.

“Malam El-Rufai remains focused on the tough and hard work of stopping the bleeding and the needless breaking of bones”.

BREAKING: Protesters win as NBA withdraws El-Rufai’s invitation to annual conference

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has withdrawn the invitation extended to the Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai to speak at its 2020 Annual General Conference (AGC).

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the decision, reached by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the NBA, was announced on Thursday at the 2020 pre-AGC NEC meeting of the NBA.

At the meeting, the NBA NEC resolved that the invitation extended to the Kaduna State Governor by the 2020 Annual General Conference Planning committee be withdrawn.

Recall that massive protests greeted the invitation of the Kaduna State Governor to the NBA’s 2020 AGC. Many lawyers hitherto threatened to boycott the AGC if the invitation to the Governor was not withdrawn.

The lawyers cited killings in southern Kaduna as parts of the reasons why they wanted the invitation extended to the Kaduna State Governor withdrawn.

According to them, stopping the Governor from speaking at the NBA’s AGC would show disapproval of the manner he is handling the situation in southern Kaduna.

The lawyers also cited other allegations against the Kaduna State Governor.

TNG reports the decision to withdraw the invitation of El-Rufai to the AGC had been communicated to him, according to the NBA’s NEC.

TNG further reports that the virtual NEC meeting of the NBA is the same as the customary Pre-AGC NEC meeting of the association.

It will be the last NEC meeting of the Paul Usoro led NBA administration. With participants from all of its 125 branches, the NEC is the highest decision making organ of the NBA after the AGM.
