  • Lawmakers intensify lobbying to get super C’ttees as NASS reconvenes tomorrow

Lawmakers intensify lobbying to get super C’ttees as NASS reconvenes tomorrow

After the Sallah break lawmakers will be back to the National Assembly to continue their lobbying efforts towards getting super committees.

This is a common practice in the legislative parlance worldwide and in the Nigerian legislature, heads of caucuses and zonal coordinators play vital roles.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reliably gathered that most of the lawmakers who arrived at the weekend from their various constituencies are reaching out to zonal coordinators and caucus leaders.

A source privy to this development told TNG that “it’s no crime for lawmakers to lobby for whatever you journalists call juicy committees. But don’t rule out the possibility that those who actively participated in ensuring that the right thing was done must definitely smile.

“Don’t forget that this is a unique assembly because of the onslaught of other parties in this dispensation.

“We’re doing everything humanly possible to ensure that both chambers don’t get their hands burnt this time around considering the manner the leaders emerged.

In the Senate there are 63 committees and other various sub-committees while in the House of Representatives there are 89 standing committees and other committees.

In the Senate, the issue of who gets what is always not knotty because there are 109 senators while in the House of Reps it is always a ‘Dugbe’ market affair as more than 350 members jostle for juicy committees.

Another lawmaker who also spoke to TNG under the condition of anonymity said: ” in other climes it’s usually a walkover as they know those that have the capacity to handle certain sensitive committees because of their backgrounds.

“Here we look at faces and give legislative positions to both the capable and the grossly incompetent ones but this time around the situation may change for the betterment of all.

“Those in charge in both chambers are men who had proven that they can always right the wrongs.

Nigerian writers urge Tinubu, NASS to address insecurity, revisit book policy

Nigerian writers have urged the Federal government to urgently address the pending security challenges in the country as it settles down with governance in this new political dispensation.

In a press release signed by the President, Nigerian Centre of PEN International (PEN Nigeria), Folu Agoi and the General Secretary, Dagga Tolar, they claimed that the rising wave of terror attacks has made it difficult for them to interact physically with their colleagues across the country.

“With the inauguration, on May 29, 2023, of the new regime headed by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Nigerian Centre of PEN International (aka PEN Nigeria), a worldwide association of writers, feels obligated to articulate the anxieties of over 200 million Nigerians over the palpable air of insecurity compounded by multidimensional poverty across the length and breadth of the country. In view of the rising wave of terror attacks, a trip across the country now seems to be like playing Russian roulette.

“This has made it extremely difficult for us, writers, in particular to interact physically with other members of the literary community across the country, just as many farmers now dread going to their farms because of the issue of insecurity which is a threat to food security,” the statement reads partly.

PEN appreciated the steps taken so far by the government to confront the problem, while hoping that the tide of terror attacks would be stemmed in no time so that citizens can begin to move freely for cultural collaboration and integration, and growth in socio-economic and other activities.

They further pleaded with the Honourable Members of the National Assembly to revisit and approve the National Book Policy (NBP), “which is meant to take care of the interests of writers/ authors, publishers, editors/proof-readers, printers, marketers/distributors, booksellers, librarians and archivists, besides readers, including students and teachers.”

According to the writers, the Policy, which is essential for educational development, good value system, good governance and advancement of civilisation, was first submitted to the August Assembly in 2013, 10 years ago.

He said: “Today is a very historic day. We have come to thank you for your support. We were here before to seek your support and prayers. Here we are today; we have won. It was through your collective efforts—Mr. President, yourself, governors and all the other stakeholders.

You’re coming from the point of knowledge because you were with him when he was governor, you were in the National Assembly, and now you’re the mother of the nation.

NASS polls: After defeat, Wase hails Abass, Kalu emergence as speaker, deputy

After defeat, immediate past Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Idris Ahmed Wase, has hailed the newly elected Speaker of the 10th House, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas and Deputy Speaker Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu on their election.

Wase in a statement he personally signed and made available to newsmen thanked his colleagues for their support and counsel, those who voted for him, those who did not and those who would have voted him but voted his opponent against their will and added that he has enriched his experience.

He assured that he will continue to show “Charity towards all and Malice towards none”.

He stated: “Although we were on different sides of the political space, we have, nevertheless always acknowledged that we were all partners in the project of deepening our parliamentary democracy.

“I believe my contest in this Speakership election was much more about making a case for what I considered a lack of equity and fairness in the manner in which my Party’s zoning was done much more than it was about winning. As a politician who has been engaging in elections since 2007 and has returned to the House for the 5th term, I verily understand that every contest must generate its necessary contentions.

“I thank all my Honorable Colleagues for their support and counsel. I thank those who voted for me. I thank those who did not vote for me. I thank those who voted my opponent even when their heart was with me. I am eternally grateful to you all and must say that I have been further enriched by the experience. I assure all my colleagues that I will continue to, in the words of Abraham Lincoln, show ‘Charity towards all and Malice towards none’”, Wase stated.

The former Deputy Speaker who has been in the Green chamber for four terms said he intends to fervently and actively participate in all Legislative Business of the 10th Assembly.

“However, in the end, we have to come together to confront the bigger matters of stability of the Parliament and enriching Legislative Governance to deepen our collective democracy.
In this light, I wish to once again congratulate the Rt. Hon. Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu on their victory and urge my supporters and well-wishers, as well as my fellow contestants to give them all the cooperation required to achieve a stable and united 10th House of Representatives. I intend to fervently and actively participate in all Legislative Business of the 10th Assembly and will continue to proudly represent not only the good people of Wase Federal Constituency but Nigerians at large.

“I thank my mentor and Leader, the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, GCFR for his continuous fatherly support and counsel which he has sustained from my early days in ACN till date. I am immensely indebted to you sir and will continue to be.

“I thank my constituents who have consistently demonstrated their unalloyed faith in and support for me by continuously returning me to the Green Chambers now for the 5th term to represent them. I will continue to represent you well.

“I thank my Campaign Team and supporters for their ceaseless efforts throughout the campaign. I am very much indebted to you.
