  • Funke Akindele slams Daddy Freeze over Halleluyah Challenge

Cool FM’s controversial On –air-personality, Daddy Freeze has continually condemned Nathaniel Bassey, the initiator of the famed online praise and worship service tagged Halleluyah Challenge. The light skinned broadcaster accused the gospel singer of leveraging on the success of the challenge to promote his music. Days ago Monday, Bassey released a new song titled ‘Olowogbogboro‘ which is an anthem dedicated to the Hallelujah Challenge.

Freeze puts it this way:” Totally saw this coming right from the beginning and I recall telling people it’s a huge promotion leading up to something. I tried so hard to explain that Nathaniel is building a big promotion platform, that social media is a powerful tool and you just have to know how to exploit it….. Interestingly, I was not even judging or anything…. I was actually impressed by Nathaniel’s ability to own Instagram space and pull off such publicity with the Hallelujah challenge

“I believed he was about to find a way to sell gospel music and I was actually hoping he will succeed. However, it’s always interesting to note that anything related to religion is not to be questioned or discussed on this side of the planet…. You are just supposed to take it and agree to it as it is presented to you without a single thought of your own no matter how intelligent or educated you are. In other words, when it is a religious matter, you are to set your brain aside. In fact, I was chastised by some of my people on the basis that it is wrong for me to see something about praising God and start thinking it relates to promotion or any money making venture for that matter…… I was even told the reason I raise queries about religious matter is that I don’t have faith…. The fact that I refused to lose my own sleep because of someone else’s money making venture even made it worse (yes, I refused all invitations to join the challenge). Meanwhile, here I was actually impressed that someone was about to find a way to sell gospel music” he wrote on Instagram.

Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele who is a friend to Freeze and a staunch supporter of the Halleluyah Challenge reacted to his statement, urging him to focus on the positive benefits of the challenge.

“If someone gathers people together to praise God then it is a positive thing. If he is inspired to release a song it is positive. Let’s always look at the positive side of things o” she wrote.

He added that the challenge has become a ‘celebrity screenshot challenge and an unverified testimony challenge’

Hear him:” The #hallelujahchallenge was actually a noble idea that I enjoyed,’ Freeze started, ‘Until it became a celebrity screenshot challenge and an unverified testimony challenge, where God leaves his lofty throne in the heavens, to help Nigerians look for their passports, repair their fridges, and sign their budget.

“I also have a problem with the convener of the challenge laying claim to every good thing that happened while the challenge was on, while ignoring the pastor’s wife who committed suicide and the popular church that had a fire incident during the period the challenge was running”.

However as the Challenge comes to an end,Bassey has urged the participants ,not to pay attention to the critics who condemn the Challenge.

  • Nathaniel Bassey:”I am not under pressure to sustain Halleluyah Challenge”

When Nathaniel Bassey started his Halleluyah Challenge, an Instagram Live vigil where over 70,000 viewers worship and praise God from12am to 1pm, many naysayers thought it was another viral fad.

With a handheld mobile phone, participants of the Halleluyah Challenge log on to Nathaniel Bassey’s Instagram handle to get live feeds from the service.

No one saw this coming from the Ankara wearing Nathaniel Bassey who would pass for a committed usher in a Pentecostal church. Without the flamboyance of a Sammy Okposo or the energy of Midnight Crew, Bassey passionately shows up from the day it kicked off on 1st of June to the present, like a sheep being led by the shepherd, ready to sing the praises of his master.

The award winning trumpeter and gospel artiste was recently quizzed about the Halleluyah Challenge and he had a lot to say.

According to him:”I was surprised when high profile people joined in the Halleluyah Challenge. It just goes to show an expression, the desire of the people. Don’t forget this is coming on the background of economic recession, and depression. A few weeks ago, who would have thought we would be discussing suicide in Nigeria? The Halleluyah Challenge has provided a platform for hope and for people to believe again, sing again and dance again. We have heard testimonies of healings and breakthroughs. At first I was surprised and looking at the move of God, I wasn’t surprised”

On having the desire to sustain the movement that has spread like wild fire, the soft spoken Evangelist said:”I have always said I am not under any pressure to perform, the instruction was to praise God for 30 days . I have learnt over the years to live life without pressure.I am not going to brand this or register this as a trade mark .When I am done with this, I will focus on my music and pastoring our youth church .I am not under any pressure to sustain it. When there is another God Idea, we will job on it. For now we just enjoy the ride”.

Nath In his early years, developed a rather uncommon interest for jazz music and began listening, imitating and playing to the music of Louis Armstrong, Miles Davies, Clifford Brown, Charlie Parker, Stan Getz and Kirk Whalum, Phil Driscoll, Hugh Masakela and other Jazz luminaries. His zeal for the Jazz form would later stir him to seek out bands and groups along the Jazz lines. He then joined a top jazz quartet in Lagos, Spectrum 4, where he played alongside his childhood friends.

About that time Nat, as he is fondly called, was approached by one of the most respectable figures in the Nigerian jazz and music circle, Elder Steve Rhodes to lead, arguably, the first Jazz Orchestra in the country – THE STEVE RHODES ORCHESTRA. He served as band leader and lead trumpet player for a period of two years and later moved on with his music career. His peculiar and particularly soulful trumpet playing style caught the ears of top Artistes and composers within and outside the country. Teemac, Ayo Bankole Jr, Cobhams Asuquo, Wole Oni, Yinka Davies, Adlan Cruise, Funsho Ogundipe, Peter King, Sotiris Papadopoulus, Paul Petersen, The French Cultural centre, American International School, are but a few individuals and organizations that have sought his musical ingenuity.

As time passed, Nathaniel began sensing a deep yearning within. There was more to his music than he thought. He later took time off his numerous mainstream commitments to seek the Lord under the Mentorship and guidance of late Pastor Eskor Mfon, the former Pastor of The Redeemed Christian Church Of God, City Of David Parish. This decision attracted fierce criticisms from friends, artistes and colleagues who thought it unthinkable abandoning what was becoming a thriving mainstream music career to serve exclusively at a local church.

As he developed an intimate fellowship with the Holy Spirit, he then realized that music was more than an item to fill a space in time but was a fundamental tool in the praise and worship of the Lord. Soon after, a music ministry was born and for Nathaniel, the main thrust was worship.

Nathaniel, a graduate of Politics and International Relations at the University of London, also serves as the director of music at the RCCG; The King’s Court.
