Nigerian Army General bags Guinea Bissau National Award

President Umaro Embaló of the Republic of Guinea Bissau, has decorated Brig.-Gen. Al-hassan Grema of the Nigerian Army, with the National Order of Merit, Cooperation and Development Medal of his country.

Brig.-Gen. Grema was the pioneer Force Commander, ECOWAS Stabilization Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau (ESSMGB), which was deployed to Guinea Bissau in April 2022.

The Acting Director Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, in a statement on Saturday, said the general was decorated with the award on Sept. 27 at the Presidential Palace in Bissau.

Gusau said that the deployment of Grema was necessitated by the failed coup attempt in the country on Feb.1, 2022, during which the President and his cabinet were attacked at the Palacio do Governo while holding a meeting.

He said the ESSMGB, under Gen. Grema’s 17-month stewardship, stabilised Guinea Bissau and ensured peace and stability.

“According to many sources, the presence of the ESSMGB ensured an atmosphere of peace and security in the fragile West African country as evidenced by the huge increase in economic activities and return of many International non-governmental organization (INGOs) and global organizations.

“Several countries, including the US, are also working on reopening their diplomatic missions and offices in Bissau.

“During the award ceremony, well attended by the Guinea Bissau military and political top hierarchy, President Embalo poured encomiums on Grema and wished him well,” he said.

Gusau said the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, had commended Grema for making Nigeria proud.

According to him, the CDS also called on other commanders in various foreign missions to emulate the shining example of the senior officer.

APC said I have done well – Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has expressed happiness for being deemed fit to receive an award from the country’s president,  Muhammadu Buhari, adding that he’s a proud man to have been certified okay by the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) despite being in the opposition.

Governor Wike made this statement in Port Harcourt on Monday during a dinner/reception in his honour to celebrate the ‘Distinguished Award in Infrastructure Delivery’ bestowed on him by President Buhari.

“So I thank all of you and I dedicate this Award to God Almighty and to all of you who prayed for us to achieve what we have achieved. The Award is not to me, it is to all of you. I feel proud to say if the ruling party can say you have done well, who is that person? Let them come and campaign here,” he said.

Wike added that he would leverage his award to campaign in the forthcoming general elections, revealing that no other party can come to Rivers State to campaign.

Nigerian Senate recommends Tobi Amusan for national award

The Nigerian Senate has recommended 25-year-old history-making Tobi Amusan for a national award after winning gold in the Women’s 100 metres hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, USA.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the recommendation of Amusan for a national award by the Senate followed a motion moved by Senator Ibikunle Amosun during plenary on Wednesday.

By winning gold in the Women’s 100 metres hurdles at the World Athletics Championships, Amusan made history for Nigeria as the first Nigerian to win a world title and an unprecedented world record in one day.

She first ran a blistering 12:12 seconds to shatter the world record of 12:20 seconds set by Kendra Harrison of U. S. in the semi-finals. She then followed up with a (+2.5) wind-assisted 12.06s in the final.

The time in the final would however not be recognised as it was deemed to be well over the legal +2.0 wind assist allowed in Athletics.

In a resolution passed, following deliberation on the motion on the floor of the Senate, the upper legislative chamber commended Amusan for her spectacular achievement in the track and field event.

The Senate also urged the federal government to increase investment in the sports sector as a way of creating opportunities for the teeming youths and bringing Nigerians into international recognition.

  • Ghana President honours outgoing US Ambassador to Ghana, Stephanie Sullivan, with a national award

Ghana President honours outgoing US Ambassador to Ghana, Stephanie Sullivan, with a national award

Ghanaian President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has honoured the outgoing US Ambassador to Ghana, Stephanie S. Sullivan, with a national award Grand Medal, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the socio-economic development of Ghana.

The award is also in recognition of her disposition as a diplomat, which has helped to enhance the mutual understanding and co-operation between Ghana and the US during her four-year duty tour of Ghana.

President Akufo-Addo said Ms Sullivan had helped in the areas of trade, health, agriculture, governance and security, leading to a significant expansion and consolidation of the ties between the two countries.

“At the heart of this process has been the indefatigable, consummate professional, the Honourable Stephanie S. Sullivan, who devoted her career to serving our great nation,” he added.

The President also described the outgoing Ambassador as a passionate adherent of human rights, particularly women and children’s rights, who had been relentless in her effort to bring the experience and assistance of her country to help improve Ghana’s governance system, especially in the quality of the electoral system.

“We are very thankful for your effort that helped us to undertake the most transparent elections in the Fourth Republic in 2020 and enabled us to cement our reputation as a beacon of democracy and stability in Africa,” President Akufo-Addo added.

He also said Ghana owed Mrs Sullivan special thanks for the exceptional assistance it received from the US at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic when access to vaccines for countries such as Ghana was a difficult experience.

He further said her affinity to the country enabled her to assemble, at Ghana’s moment of need, significant supplies of vaccines from the US government, adding: “We shall always be indebted to you.”

“We in the New Patriotic Party have had the benefit of working with the Honourable Sullivan on two occasions, the first being between 1997 and 2001, when we were in opposition, myself as the opposition spokesperson on Constitutional and Legal Matters when she was the Political Chief in the US Embassy in Accra.

“The second is when she is the number one at the US Embassy as the US Ambassador and we are in government, with me, whom she knew well in her first stay, as President of the Republic,” he said.

On her part, Ms Sullivan said the strong ties and relationship between the two countries would endure long after her departure, “thanks to the generation of diplomats, Diasporans, partners and friends who have contributed to our shared history and interwoven links”.

The ambassador said she was proud of how the US invested in the people of Ghana, making a major difference in the lives of the people, especially in public health, literacy, clean water, agribusiness, peace and security and bringing substantial improvement to the nation’s energy sector.

“The Year of Return attracted many of my fellow Americans to connect with Ghana in person,” she said, and mentioned the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, among the visitors.

The award ceremony, which attracted the Dean and the members of the Diplomatic Corps, was the fourth time in the history of the Fourth Republic that a foreign diplomat accredited to the country had been honoured by the government.
American, British and Chinese diplomats had previously been honoured.

Ms Sullivan is the second American diplomat to receive the state honour.

Xenophobia intervention: Reps recommend Air Peace boss for national award

    From Jonas Ike, Abuja

The House of Representatives on Wednesday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to include Chairman of Air Peace Airline Mr. Allen Onyema in the 2020 National Honours Award list for his efforts in evacuating many stranded Nigerians from South Africa.
This was sequel to the adoption of a motion by Hon. Abdulrazak Namdas (Adamawa, APC) entitled: “Need for Federal Government to Award Mr Allen Onyema National Honours for Evacuating Stranded Nigerians from South Africa” on the floor of the House.
Debating the motion, Namdas noted that Onyema in the wake of renewed unprovoked xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other foriegn nationales living in South Africa had depolyed his airlines to evacuate many stranded Nigerians.
He further noted that in the last two weeks many Nigerians had landed safely at the Murtala Muhamed International Airport Lagos from South Africa
The lawmakers also noted that the good gesture from Onyema who he described as a detrabalized Nigerian was done at no cost at either the federal or state governments in Nigeria.
He called on other well meaning citizens of the country to emulate the good gesture from Onyema and called on the House to ask that the Federal Government include his name in the 2020 National Honours Award list.
Prior to the motion, a good number of other lawmakers from all the six geo-political zones had spoke glowingly about the good gesture extended to stranded Nigerians from the Anambra State born lawyer and businessman.
Consequently, the Speaker Hon. Femi Gbajabimilla put the matter to a voice vote and the lawmakers voted overwhelmingly for it.
He subsequently mandated the Clerk to the House Hon. Muhammed Abdulkadir to ensure that the resolution is immediately transmitted to the President for necessary action.
