Only one Covid-19 test carried out in Kogi – NCDC

A situation report released by Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has shown that only one tested sample was carried out in Kogi State.

According to the report, there are 35,983 samples tested in 36 states and the federal capital territory (FCT) so far.

Of all the tests carried out in the nation, Kogi and Cross River states have the lowest figures of samples tested.

While Kogi has only tested one sample, Cross River has tested seven samples, all of which returned negative for COVID-19.

This revelation was released in the May 18 situation report by the NCDC on Tuesday.

The NCDC data also revealed that Lagos has tested the highest number of persons with 14,886 samples tested, followed by the FCT and Kano with 4,688 and 2,653 samples tested, respectively.

Recall that NCDC had visited Kogi in the first week of May, but the state claimed the agency’s officials “fled” the state when they were asked to undergo tests for COVID-19.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has released the number of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) tests conducted for Kogi and Cross River States that are yet to report any confirmed cases of the disease.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the NCDC released the data alongside the number of COVID-19 tests conducted per State published on its website on Tuesday.

The Centre stated that the publication was part of commitments to ensure transparent reporting of COVID-19 data in the country.

According to the publication, Kogi has conducted just one test so far and Cross River State has conducted 7 tests.

Meanwhile, Director General of the NCDC, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, had disclosed that the centre was working very hard to equip its network of laboratories to be able to achieve the target of testing in the country.

He said the NCDC will collaborate with global partners to tackle bottlenecks. The DG said that the centre so far had 26 testing laboratories in its network for COVID-19.

The NCDC Laboratory Strategic Group has set itself a target of testing two million people across the country in the next three months.

The two million Nigerians will come to about 50,000 per state which the health agency noted was a very ambitious target.

The NCDC said that this would cost a lot of money and also required a lot of collaboration.

“We did put an ambitious target of hitting two million tests in three months, this is the beginning of week three if I’m not mistaken. So, we are not in the second month yet.

“Sometimes, to drive improvement, you have to set out that target for yourself, and that is really what we’ve done.

“There are many bottlenecks to this and that’s something throughout this week we are working with our global partners in terms of how to unbottle some of those supply chain challenges.

“And some of those things are now going to yield fruit this week. I actually don’t want to name a date untill I have those reagents in the country.

”So, I’m hesitant to say this is when it will happen or that is when it will happen.

“There is now a lot of momentum around the supply, we hope those reagents will really lead us to that,” Ihekweazu explained.

Speaking on activation of laboratories in the country, he said that when building an institution, there were many things that were never visible to people.

“So, when we come to NCDC four years ago, we realised that there were several pieces of laboratory equipment lying across the country that were not functioning.

“Why were they not functioning, maybe for one small component or problem. And you’ll be wasting equipment worth millions of naira or millions of dollars.

“So, we started looking for how to train our biomedical engineers. We found partner in Japanese International Corporation Agency (JICA), and they started supporting us specifically in this regard.

“We now retained two bio medical engineers over six months in Japan. Japan is well known world-wide for their capacity around things like this.

“These two colleagues are leading a lot of the efforts on the equipment side of activating labs. Then we have our biomedical Laboratory scientists that are leading the training on Laboratory diagnostic science,” he explained.

Ihekweazu said that the agency would send a three-man team comprising a biomedical engineer, a molecular Laboratory scientist and one new colleague “expert” to be trained in the process .

“Two teams left today, one in Katsina and the other to Ilorin to do this. And as we continue to do this, we build the capacity of more Nigerians to do this,” he said.

Ihekweazu said that the maintenance of medical equipment was one of the biggest challenges the health agency had.

“We have persons on the Laboratory side, but anybody working in the health space will tell you the challenges that we have with very expensive pieces of medical equipment that often breaks down for one small problem and that’s the challenge we are trying to solve.

“There is no magic bullet, you keep pushing, you strain,” he added.

He disclosed that they had a workshop at NCDC where they trained local staff to do a lot of the maintenance.

“What we call biosafety cabinet that are necessary, they have to be accredited every single year, they have to be checked whether they provide the safe environment to enable people work safely.

“So, to do that, the pipe certifying them has to themselves be certified that they can certify the cabinet,” he noted.

According to him, it’s a very diligent process in keeping our equipment working, because we know that the equipment is what ultimately leads us to have confidence in the result that we produce.

“Yes, we have people doing this and we try to keep them within the public sector which is not always easy. But I think people are beginning to realise that there is benefit in working in the public sector and they can grow their career that way,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the DG who spoke on self isolation, noted that very early in the outbreak, the agency had a policy on self isolation for people that traveled back to the country from one of the most affected countries.

He said that but, since then, the policy had been institutional isolation, both for people being brought back through the evacuation processes at the moment.

“We are constantly reviewing this policy but that’s the policy at the moment. Yes, other countries are doing different things , but this is what we have agreed to do between the PTF for now and that’s the policy of the federal government of Nigeria through the PTF.

Coronavirus: NCDC sets to publish number of COVID-19 tests per State

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says all is set to publish the number of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) tests that have been carried for States of the Federation.

Director General of NCDC, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, who disclosed this in an interview on Tuesday, said this will be published so as to see that there are many States that don’t have a laboratory, but have tested an incredible number of people compared to the total figure.

Ihekwazu, who told NAN that the centre was working very hard to equip its network of laboratories to be able to achieve the target of testing in the country, said the NCDC will collaborate with global partners to tackle bottlenecks.

“There is now a lot of momentum around the supply, we hope those reagents will really lead us to that,” Ihekweazu explained.

The DG said that the other thing was how the NCDC would stimulate collection of samples from Nigerians.

“Like I said, we will publish the number of tests per state. That we promise to do today, but we might end up doing it tomorrow.

“But, this will be published so that you can see actually from those numbers that there are many states that don’t have a laboratory, that have tested an incredible number of people compared to the total figure.

“So, we will discuss those numbers once we make them available either later today or tomorrow,” he stated.

COVID-19: NCDC opens two more testing laboratories

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) at the weekend opened two more laboratories to test for COVID-19.

The laboratories located at the Federal Medical Centre, Yola, Adamawa, and Acunnalysis laboratory, Nnewi in Anambra State bring to 26, the number of NCDC laboratories nationwide.

The Tweet announcing the new laboratories also noted that three more laboratories were in the works in Katsina, Kwara and Gombe States.

Once the three are completed, the NCDC would have 17 more states to cover before it achieves a national network of molecular laboratories that can test for COVID-19 or any other diseases.

  • COVID-19: Gates foundation clears air on NCDC bill

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on Monday categorically stated that it did not offer members of the House of Representatives or their leadership any monetary grant in respect of the Control of Infectious Disease Bill, 2020.

Country Director of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Paulin Basinga said this while appearing before the House Ad-Hoc Committee investigating the bribery allegation levelled against the House by the spokesman of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP).

Mr Basinga said his organization has always adhered strictly to professionalism in its dealings with other organizations in Nigeria.

“Any such allegations are entirely false and without merit. To be clear, the Foundation has not offered any financial incentives to any member of Nigeria’s legislative branch for the passage of legislation nor has it offered any grants to organizations in Nigeria in connection with the same.

“The Foundation adheres to strict ethical and legal guidelines across all areas of its operations. What drives the Foundation’s work is the simple and compelling belief that all lives have equal value and that everyone deserves to lead a healthy productive life,” Mr Basinga said.

Meanwhile, the House had given the CUPP Spokesman till Thursday, 21 May to appear before it or send a presentation to it on the bribery allegation he made against it or the panel would be left with no option than to conclude its work without his input and submit its report to the House.

The chairman of the investigative panel, Henry Nwawuba maintained that though he was just seeing the purported court papers for the first time at the hearing, the panel would not entertain any submission on behalf of the Spokesman or CUPP.

“What you are trying to do is to thwart the process of this investigation to determine the veracity or otherwise of the allegation by CUPP Spokesman, that was an ambush and that is unacceptable.

“We give your client till Thursday to appear before the Committee or communicate through a presentation. Failure to do that, we will do our job, conclude the investigation and present our report to the House,” Nwawuba said.

The chairman also urged media houses to continue to partner with the Legislature in its effort to move the nation forward, while adding that thorough verification of issues should always be carried out before publication to avoid unnecessary clashes.

COVID-19: NCDC says Cross River deserves to be Coronavirus free

The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has described Cross River State as deserving of its Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) free status.

NCDC stated this on Monday during a verification visit to the state.

The leader of the NCDC team, Dr Omobolanle Olowu, lauded the state governor, Sir Ben Ayade for his strong leadership in the battle against the pandemic, successfully keeping it away from the state.

“The Federal Government strongly Commends the Action Governor of Cross River State Governor Ben Ayade, and his energetic team who started response in January when others still lived in denial. They (Cross River) deserve to still be without a case of COVID-19.

“The governor was proactive in shutting down borders, screening visitors and suspected cases and initiating the no mask no movement campaign in Nigeria,” she said.

She also expressed delight at the level of compliance with the no mask no movement policy of the government.

Expressing disbelief, she said: “I cannot believe I did not see one person without a face mask from the airport to this office. I guess this explains the results in Cross River State. I commend the state for the great work done. We never knew all these in Abuja. We will tell Mr President all what we have seen.

“From all I have seen, this is a great response in Nigeria. Cross River has honestly done well. There is a lot to learn from Cross River as best practice for Nigeria. Nigeria should give Cross River State accolades for producing face masks, Face Shield, PPEs in its Garment Factory.”

She said the NCDC was also satisfied with the contact tracing, Surveillance and testing done so far by the state even as she encouraged the state to do more in that regard.

“We are happy that the state has a great working relationship with the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital. This is Commendable.

“Governor Ben Ayade woke up even before the rest of the country. He shut his borders and has been working from the front line. Your Governor is a man with foresight who believes in his people and wants to save his people.”

Highlight of the teams visit included the official opening of the 100-bed isolation center in Adiabo.

Confirmed cases of COVID-19 test negative in Enugu

The Enugu State Ministry of Health says two of the 10 Coronavirus disease COVID-19 cases undergoing treatment in the state have now tested negative.

The state’s Commissioner for Health, Prof. Ikechukwu Obi, said in a statement issued on Sunday that they were being assessed for discharge from the isolation and treatment centre where they had been receiving treatment.

Obi explained that the two cases were the three-year old and 13-year old contacts of the third case in the state, an indigene of Bauchi State with a travel history to and from Jos, Plateau.

“The unwavering support and commitment of the Enugu State Government ably led by Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has continued to yield good results as the motivated staff of the ministry continue to work tirelessly to identify, isolate and treat COVID-19 cases.

“The good people of Enugu State are still encouraged to continue to comply with the directives of the Federal Government and the Enugu State Government on containment of the spread of COVID-19.

“As well comply with the precautionary measures in the public health advisory of the Federal Ministry of Health, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the state Ministry of Health,’’ he said.

TESTIMONY: Doyin Okupe, diagnosed with diabetes, cancer narrates COVID-19 ‘escape’

Doyin Okupe, a former Special Assistant to former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Senior Special Assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan has shared testimony of how he survived the dreadful Coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Doyin Okupe narrating how himself and his wife survived the disease, revealed his battle with hypertension, diabetes and prostate cancer.

    Read Doyin Okupe’s testimony below:

    COVID19: MY TESTIMONY

Ps 24 vs 4. Though I walk thru the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear No evil.

I hv gone thru a lot In my life. I was diagnosed hypertensive at d age of 30yrs. I had cancer of the Prostrate at 56yrs. At 63 I had to hv a non invasive corrective surgery to treat Congenital Sinus Bradycardia. Now at 68yrs I was infected with covid19. I bear on me virtually all the risk factors against survival against covid19 infection. I am 68yrs old. I am hypertensive, diagnosed diabetic in oct 2019. I have sleep Apnoea. This is the story of my life. But the Bible says ” Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but God delivers him from them all.”

For the reasons above I have chosen early to be close to God and build an army of Christian Soldiers around me.

In feb of this year I was restless in my spirit. I called for an appointment wt Primate Oshitelu, who is d leader of the Church of the Lord Worldwide and lives in Ogere less than 10km from my residence in Iperu.

He saw me and I told him I wanted to pray for God’s Mercy.

We never met at that close level before then. He told me to come for 3days prayers on the Mercy land. I did. On d 3rd day the ministers who prayed wt me asked me to come for 3days retreat on mount TABEORRAH. This was a special privilege cos d place is opened to public only once a year. I went. I told God privately that I had come to seek His face, ask for Mercy and seek refuge in a Secret place in His Holy Terbanacle. On d 3rd day when we had d closing prayers, I was told all will be well but that when I gst home satan was still going to attack but I will be delivered by God Almighty. I was slightly upset but decided to rest on God’s promise for deliverance.

When the trouble finally came, and I was told by Dr dele Ajayi, the Head of Covid19 Team in Ogun state, I was devastated. He was extremely nice to me and assured me they will do their best. He arranged to test my entire household and our movement to isolation Center.

Thereafter I called d Primate and we prayed. He assured me the sickness was not unto death. I called my spiritual father and mentor Rev Joe Olaiya and my other ministers of God wt whom I have been praying for more than 10yrs. I already mentioned them in my previous posts. I called a snr brother, apostle Dave Salako, wt whom we shared the word and prayed frequently during my sojourn at the isolation Center.

Unbelievably together wt my brothers in the Lord we prayed for no less than 7 to 10hrs daily, day and nite. Satan can afflict us but cannot affect our prayers. Prayer is the most powerful weapon of a Christian in and out of crisis. That’s why the Bible says” Men ought to pray ceaselessly “. My wife and I knew that we were in a war situation and since the best doctors in the world do not know for sure which treatment works if any works at all, it was better for us to face squarely the Almighty God who is the All knowing and all powerful God to Heal us and true to His promise he did. All glory, honour and praise to his name and the power in the blood of the Holy lamb of God, Jesus Christ by whose STRIPES we were healed.

On friday 8th of May we had the good news that my wife and I had tested negative. We then needed another negative to be discharged. We were glad. But on sunday 10th satan struck. Another result confirmed that my wife recorded her 2nd negative while I tested positive again. Hope crashed and the heavens literally fell on me. The doctors insisted my wife must leave immediately to avoid reinfection which happened to a couple we met there. My wife broke down and wept uncontrollably. The doctors stood their ground and I also pleaded that I would rather she left for her children’s and everyone else sake. She got up and told d doctors that if she is forcefully removed she will kill herself and her blood shall be on the necks of the doctors. At this point the doctors were taken aback and they left. Came back 1hr later and gave us a set of drugs which will reduce viral load further and prevent reinfection. They also insisted we both must wear masks in house 24/7 and we agreed. When they left my wife and I agreed that we should not be ignorant of the devices of satan. I was due for another test in few hrs. We called everybody and we all launched serious supplication that God must intervene instant. We told corona virus that its name is insignificant when pitched wt the name Jesus which had been exalted above all names. That it must now bow. Besides bcos the righteousness of Christ Jesus resides in us and Jesus was the light of the world and God already at creation separated light from darkness, corona being an arrow from the kingdom of darkness cannot coexist wt the God of light inside of us

It must leave or must be ready to contend wt the power of the blood of Jesus. I quickly brought out my Holy communion wine knelt down, prayed and drank it and invoked the cleansing power of the blood. As we concluded, behold the doctor was at the door to take our samples for test. He did and left. We sent Angels of the Lord of Host after him and commanded that the test must come back negative.

In the nite we did a vigil with Mathew 18 vs 18 19 & 20. We then both chose Tue 14 april as our departure date from the isolation Center. By 6pm on Monday 13th my wife completed packing all our belongings and we were ready to go. All the fruits in the fridge we put together and gave our neighbour.

We thanked God for our discharge and slept. I was woken up @ 7.30am wt a phone call from dr Ajayi, the head of the team in abeokuta that our results hv tested negative and we were free to go.

My friends Our God is still in the business of hearing and answering Prayers. With faith in God and fervent prayers we can overcome all life challenges. Only we must believe and not doubt because He is faithful who has promised us and His word has never failed. Jesus is Lord. Hallelujah!!!

It is very sad that presently people of the world including world leaders fear Covid19 more than they fear God, the creator of heaven and earth. This is a global calamity and a sure path to pain sorrow and misery.

We Christians must take our stand. God Jehova is greater than all things, forms or forces. We must esteem him above everything on earth or in heaven. All powers belong to him. If we call him, confess our sins and humble ourselves nationally or globally , He will hear us and heal our lands in Jesus Name. And to Him who is God eternal I give all glory, honour and worship. I exalt the name of the Lord Jesus Christ the author and finisher of our faith, who rule and reign forever and ever . Amen.

The medications I took for my covid19 virus infections.

Hydroxychloroquine, 400mg daily for 2days.there after 400mg daily for 3days.

Azithromycin 500mg daily for 10 days.

Zinc sulphate 100mg daily till today

Vitamin C 1200 mg daily till now.

I had malaria while on admission. Was effectively treated with an anti malaria. I also developed cough after about a week and was effectively treated by fairly large dose of Augmentine for 7 days.

I must say that there is no universal medical consensus on a specific treatment regime for covid19. Also most of d drugs being used in different centres worldwide are not backed by any detailed or extensive research work anywhere in the world.. Most scientific works and studies currently going on have limited scientific acceptability either because the samples used are too scanty, sometimes as low as 40 to 60, or because controls do not exists. It will take another 4 to 6 months before results of credible works are available.

However the humongous nature of the global emergency make it impossible for countries not to explore experimental drugs that show any possibility or potential to contain the virus.

In my own case I commenced treatment with the hydroxychloroquine regime 4 days to my isolation. This us because I read extensively on various options of treatment for covid 19 and I follow the global debate on its pros & cons of d treatment. With my medical background and local consultation with colleagues I already made up my mind that the chloroquine regime was so far the most promising. I ordered for the drugs just in case someone close or even I should unfortunately pick up the virus.

I MUST WARN HERE THAT IF UU HV CARDIAC ARRHYTHMIAS , U WILL NEED TO CONSULT YR PHYSICIAN BEFORE U TAKE HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE. I DID. so I was advised to use 200mg twice daily instead of 400mg twice daily for 2days.

After I put my wife and I on the treatment my low grade fever disappeared completely and my wife’s bone pains too. Personally I blv the combination works. Lagos uses anti viral drugs and they also get good results. However the scientific truth we know about treatment for viral infection is that ultimately what eventually works is the innate capability of the immune system of individual patients. It is the immunity level that eventually decide the course of the infection in each individual. That is why age and ore existing comobidity factors are crucial to survival and wellbeing.

Hence for those who are not sick, you should ingest immune boosting drugs and preparations . Like zinc SULPHATE, immunace, RELOAD and similar immunity enhancing drugs.

I also took copious amount of ginger, garlic, tumeric and lemon. In kaduna I am told that they add dongoyaro leaves to the above mixture and drink liberally.

As a tip also, it is known that when the virus first gain access to the body it stays in the nasal cavity and the throat for 2 to 3days. In this position the virus itself is vulnerable. It does naturally in temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius. If at this stage u can consume large quantities of hot water wt lemon u can abort the attack.

    My Advice

Pursue personal safety at whatever cost. Stay at home. Dont visit and dont recieve visitors. Check drivers maids and aides. Since its may be difficult to gauge their compliance, either reduce to the barest minimum or do without. Those that must stay must be made to be resident and movements restricted.

.maintain physical distancing if u must ho out. Comply wt the hygiene protocols as recommended by NCDC.

Fortify yrself daily wt immune boosters.

At the slightest sign of trouble, fever, catarrh and or cough get help instant.

I hope someone finds this piece useful.

COVID-19: NCDC reveals age range more susceptible to Coronavirus in Nigeria

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says people within the 31 to 40 years age bracket are more susceptible to contracting the coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country.

According to the centre, however, more deaths have been recorded among older people of 60 years and above.

In a report on Thursday in Abuja, the NCDC said that data also showed that men were two times more likely to get the virus as shown in its latest demographic data on COVID-19 confirmed cases and deaths by gender and age in the country.
