Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have arrested a Delhi, India-bound passenger, Freeman Charles Ogbonna at the screening point of terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA Ikeja Lagos for ingesting 80 wraps of cocaine.
Ogbonna was arrested on Sunday 31st March while attempting to board his flight to Delhi, India via Doha on Qatar Airways, with a Liberian international passport, bearing the name: Carr Bismark. He was taken for body scan, which tested positive for ingestion of illicit drugs.
Preliminary checks revealed his real identity as Freeman Charles Ogbonna and was subsequently placed under observation in NDLEA custody where he started to manifest signs of discomfort. Obviously choked by the volume of illicit drugs in his stomach and another substance taken to hold back excretion, the suspect soon began to retch before starting to vomit and excrete wraps of cocaine he ingested almost simultaneously.
The suspect who claimed he was recruited into drug trafficking by one of his relatives eventually passed out a total of 80 wraps of cocaine weighing 889 grams through his mouth and anus over a period of four days. The great risk that almost took his life notwithstanding, Ogbonna said he was given the drugs to swallow at a hotel in Ipodo area of Ikeja with a promise to reward him with N300,000 cash if he successfully delivers the consignment in India.
In the same vein, NDLEA officers at the Lagos airport on Wednesday 3rd April intercepted a drug mule, Imran Taofeek Olalekan at Gate C departure of terminal 1 travelling to Oman with a check-in luggage and a backpack. Imran Taofeek Olalekan said he returned from Dubai some years ago but still has a valid residence permit on his old passport. He claimed he was promised N1,500,000 if he successfully delivers the consignment in Oman, while his recruiter, Ishola was to be paid N200,000.
Curiously, when the two bags were completely unpacked at the NDLEA office, a charm was found in one of the bags while another one was found on the drug mule who confessed that he traveled to Ibadan, Oyo state to meet with an ‘Alfa’ that prepared the charm for him to ensure he was not caught during the trip.
Another charm was also found on the intermediary, Ishola Isiaka Olalekan who accompanied Taofeek to the departure area of the airport. Ishola claimed he procured the charms for the sum of N70,000.

The Commands across the country balanced their drug supply reduction operations with War Against Drug Abuse, WADA, advocacy campaigns to schools, markets, motor parks, worship centres and communities. NDLEA perfects plan to use sports to dissuade youths from drugs

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA) Kwara State Command has perfected plans to use sporting events to dissuade youths from engaging in drug related activities.

According to NDLEA, Kwara state chapter, sports will be employed by the agency to engage more youths in a bid to make them shun drugs.

The State Commander of the agency, Bashir Ibrahim, stated this on Wednesday when some sports reporters visited him in his office in Ilorin, the state capital.

He said the decision was borne out of recent challenges faced in policing drug traffickers in the state, adding that youths now glamourise illicit use of drugs due to their vulnerability.

“Youths tend to glamourise drug use. Matters are not helped when adults, and handlers of athletes tend to sell them the drugs. We recently secured the conviction of a coach who was selling drugs to young athletes in his care,” Ibrahim said.

He also revealed a grim scenario in drug law enforcement in the state, saying that the use and supply of synthetic cannabis, a modified form of Indian hemp, is now prevalent among drug abusers.

  • NDLEA alerts public on new scam

NDLEA alerts public on new scam

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA) on Saturday dissociated itself from an audio recording circulating in the social media purported to be that of an NDLEA officer.

Attached to the audio is the picture of a Nigerian man said to be based in the U.S.A., but returning to Nigeria.

The person in the audio was negotiating payment of N5 million for the release of the U.S.-based Nigerian purportedly arrested on Friday at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos upon arrival and in possession of contraband.

Spokesman of the NDLEA stated on Saturday that investigation showed that like in previous instances, the current incident was the work of scammers.

“No NDLEA officer is involved in the audio conversation and the person whose photo was attached to the audio recording being circulated is not in our custody.

“The family members involved in this case are advised not to part with their hard-earned money to scammers.

“Nigerians with loved ones abroad are advised to keep discussions about travel plans of their relatives to themselves to avoid the hijack of such information by criminal elements for devious schemes,’’ Babafemi stated.

He explained that in the scheme, scammers would call potential victims to inform them about the arrest of their returning relatives at any of the country’s international airports in possession of illicit drugs.

“After throwing the family members into panic, the scammers then make a demand of millions of naira to facilitate the release of such persons from NDLEA custody,’’ he added.

Babafemi stressed that the agency had frustrated a number of such attempts in the past when family members called the agency’s official contacts for help or clarification.

“For those who may have a similar challenge, please feel free to seek help or clarification through any of these contact lines: +2347064670026 and +2348033326327,’’ he stated.

NDLEA alerts public on new scam

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, wishes to alert members of the public especially those who have loved ones abroad to a new scheme by scammers who impersonate NDLEA officers and call unsuspecting citizens to inform them of the arrest of their relatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Ikeja Lagos or any other international airport in Nigeria with illicit drugs upon arrival in the country.
After throwing the family members into panic, the scammers then make a demand of millions of naira to facilitate the release of such persons from NDLEA custody. We have thwarted a number of such bids in the past when the family members called the Agency’s official contacts for help or clarification.
At the moment, there is one of such scenarios the Agency has just investigated. In this case, the picture of a Nigerian man based in the US is being circulated with an audio of a purported NDLEA officer negotiating the payment of N5 million with a female relative for the release of the US-based Nigerian man purportedly arrested at the Lagos airport on Friday 22nd March upon his arrival with a ‘contraband’
Just like in previous instances, our investigation has also shown that the current incident is the work of scammers.
No NDLEA officer is involved in the audio conversation and the person whose photo is attached to the audio recording being circulated is not in our custody at MMIA or any of our Commands either as at yesterday or any other day.
The family members involved in this case are advised not to part with their hard-earned money to scammers. Nigerians with loved ones abroad are also urged to keep discussions on travel plans of their relatives to themselves to avoid the hijack of such by criminal elements for devious schemes.
