A 34-year-old South American man from Suriname, Dadda Lorenzo Harvy Albert, who was arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Port Harcourt, Rivers state for bringing into Nigeria 117 parcels of cocaine concealed in extra-large latex condoms factory packed inside bottles of 100ml body spray, has been convicted and sentenced to 13 years in prison.
The suspect who claimed he departed his country, Suriname, located in the North Eastern coast of South America on 2nd April for Sao Paulo, Brazil and from Sao Paulo to Nigeria on Friday 7th April, 2023 on board Qatar Airways flight in search of his long-lost Nigerian father whom he called “Omini”, was arraigned before Justice E.A. Obile of the Federal High Court 2, Port Harcourt on 1st June on two counts of importation and unlawful possession of 9.9kgs cocaine in charge number FHC/PH/181C/23.
The Surinamese however pleaded guilty to the two-count charge and after the review of the facts of the case on Thursday 20th July, he was convicted and sentenced to 13 years imprisonment on both counts without an option of fine. In his ruling, Justice Obile declared that “You Dadda Lorenzo Harvy Albert is hereby sentenced to 13 years imprisonment without option of fine on Count 1 and Count 2 also. And both shall run concurrently.”
The trial judge also ordered the forfeiture of the sum of Ninety ($90) United States Dollars and Ten (R$10) Brazilian Real recovered from the convict at the time of his arrest to the Federal Government. The court equally refused the application by Lorenzo’s Counsel for him to be deported back to his country. As a result, the convict is now serving his term of imprisonment at the Correctional Centre, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The successful prosecution and conviction of Lorenzo is one of the One Thousand Four Hundred and Forty-Five (1,445) drug cases concluded at the Federal High Court across the country between January and June 2023 by the Directorate of Prosecution and Legal Services of NDLEA with the trial of a total of 11,166 other drug suspects ongoing in court.

Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) commended officers and men of the prosecution department for a job well done. He charged them to remain committed to diligent prosecution of all pending cases in court, adding that conviction and sentencing without the option of fine is a strong deterrence to offenders and anyone contemplating going into any crime.

“A follow up operation led to the arrest of a staff of Toprano Hotel, Ikeja, Ibigbami Temitope Oluwatobi, who was fingered in the drug trafficking scheme.

“A consignment of 5.70kg codeine syrup going to the United Kingdom was also on Thursday July 27 seized from a 51-year-old widow, Adewunmi Atinuke by NDLEA operatives at the SAHCO export shed of the MMIA Ikeja, ” he said.

In the same vein, NDLEA operatives attached to the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company PLC (NACHO) export shed of the MMIA intercepted a cargo going to Nairobi, Kenya.

NDLEA arrests artistes’ manager for drug peddling at Lagos VIP clubs

NDLEA has arrested an artistes’ manager and his businessman accomplice who specialise in distributing illicit drugs to fun seekers at VIP night clubs and lounges in Lekki and Island axis of Lagos state.

Its Director, Media and Advocacy, Mr Femi Babafemi announced the arrests in a statement he issued on Sunday in Abuja.

Babafemi stated that the arrests followed an intelligence report that the suspects were expecting a shipment of “Colorado’’, a strong strain of synthetic Indian hemp from Los Angeles, United States of America.

He stated that one Abdulraheem Oseni (aka Papalampa) was the first to be arrested at his residence in Lekki area of Lagos State when the “Colorado’’ consignment arrived on Sunday, July 23.

He added that the suspect told investigators that he started the illicit trade three years ago.

“The suspect said that he has been selling to patrons of clubs and lounges in Lekki and Lagos Island.

“Oseni said beside the drug business, he also organises shows for artistes around Lagos and outside Nigeria,’’ Babafemi stated.

He added that 10 parcels of “Colorado’’ weighing 2.5kg and intercepted by NDLEA operatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, were linked to Oseni.

The illicit drugs were concealed inside large tins of coffee and duvets, Babafemi stated.

He added that NDLEA operatives recovered some quantities of “Colorado’’, a digital weighing scale and other paraphernalia during a follow-up search at Oseni’s residence.

“An Ikoyi, Lagos-based businessman, Nnadi Kingsley Ikenna also linked to the shipment was away in South Africa when the consignment arrived.

“While operatives maintained surveillance around Ikenna’s Ikoyi residence, they also set their dragnet for him at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja.

“He eventually arrived into the waiting arms of NDLEA officers on Thursday, July 27 when he returned to Nigeria on a Kenya Airlines flight.

“Ikenna, in his statement accepted ownership of a part of the consignment,’’ Babafemi stated.

  • NDLEA expresses concern as drug abuse among women surges

NDLEA expresses concern as drug abuse among women surges

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has expressed concern as drug abuse among women continues to surge.

According to the Agency, latest records on drug use show that one in four drug abusers in the country is a woman.

The Ogun State Commander of the NDLEA, Ibiba Odili, stated this during the Launch of the War Against Drug Abuse in collaboration with Lions Club International, in Abeokuta.

The NDLEA official revealed that 14.3 million Nigerian drug abusers are within the age range of 15 and 64 years, adding that more women are now involved.

She said, “2018 survey tells us that the most common drug abused in Nigeria is cannabis, which regrettably is cultivated mostly in the South-West region of Nigeria.

“One out of every four drug users is a woman. In 2018 data shows that more women are going into drug use. And if more women are going into drug use, it is a source of worry for us, because, it means that the traditional role of women in families and communities as caregivers, role models, and life moulders will be threatened, because what quality of children are these women going to raise?”

Odili further disclosed that Nigeria transformed from a mere transit country for drug trafficking to a major consumer and even producer of illicit substances.

“We started by being a transit country, consuming maybe cannabis, alcohol, and all of that, then, we graduated to heroin, cocaine, but today, regrettably, Nigeria is not just transit, we are huge consumers, and we are not just cultivator of cannabis, we are now producing drugs, such as methamphetamine, which is highly addictive, very potent.”

The Governor of Lions Clubs International, District 404 B3, Olayiwola Fadairo said the Club has the mandate to cleanse the society of drugs.

“We want to partner with NDLEA anywhere and anyhow that we can help. If we cannot eradicate it, we can reduce it,” he said.

At least, three suspects are currently in NDLEA custody over the shipment while a bribe of N20 million converted to $22,900 offered operatives by the importer’s agents has also been recovered and documented as evidence.

Tinubu saddened by death of 2-year-old hit by stray bullet in Delta

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday expressed sadness at the death of two-year-old Ivan Omhonrina killed by a stray bullet from the NDLEA on July 13.

The toddler was killed by a stray bullet while operatives of the NDLEA were conducting a raid at Okpanam in Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta.

A stray bullet also hit Ivan’s sibling, one-year-old Eromonsele in his left eye and is currently receiving medical attention at the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba.

“I mourn the death of little Ivan and sympathise with his parents for the painful experience of losing an innocent child in a most tragic manner.

“Ivan did not deserve to die that way. We must ensure the incident did not end like that and that what happened to Ivan does not happen to any other person again.

“I also pray for the quick recovery of Eronmonsele, who was reportedly injured in that unfortunate event.

“That incident is unacceptable. We must unravel those who foisted agony on the Omhonrinas and ensure they are brought to justice,’’ Tinubu said.

Meanwhile, the president has directed the NDLEA to speedily and thoroughly investigate the incident with a view to punishing those found culpable.

The president also charged security agents to be more professional and be more careful when conducting their operations to avoid risking the lives of innocent Nigerians.

Reps seek prosecution of NDLEA officers in killing of 2-year-old in Delta

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives has called for full investigation and prosecution of the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency officers involved in the shooting and killing of a two-year-old boy, Ivan Omhonrina.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion jointly sponsored by Rep. Onose Omhonrina (PDP-Delta) at the plenary in Abuja on Tuesday.

In his motion, he recalled that on July 13, a two-year-old Omhonrina, who was returning from school
tragically lost his life due to a stray bullet fired by NDLEA in Asaba, Delta.

He said, his younger brother Eromosele Omhonrina was also shut in one of his eyes.

He also noted that on April 4, a 17-year-old boy, Ibuchim Ofezie, a resident of the Agingi Community of Bassa Local Government Area of Jos was killed by some police patrol operatives attached to the “C” Division of the Command.

According to him, on 28 May, Bakare Demola was shot dead by Mr.Kabiru Odejimi, a Police officer of the Nigerian Police Force in Oregun, Ikeja area, Lagos State.

He said innocent Nigerians had been either injured or lost their lives due to stray bullets fired by law enforcement officers in the country.

He said if urgent intervention to proffer lasting solutions and end such recurring killings of
innocent Nigerians by stray bullets were not checkmated, citizens would continue to sustain injuries which could lead to eventual loss of lives.

He said the reoccurring killings of innocent Nigerians by stray bullets posed significant risks and consequences for individuals, communities, and the nation.

    He said it was imperative that immediate, and decisive actions were taken to address the issue, restored trust, protect human rights, and ensure the safety and well-being of all Nigerians;

Adopting the motion, the House resolved to refer the matter to the House Committee on Human Rights and National Security and Intelligence

NDLEA clamps down on illegal dealers of nitrous oxide substance

The Lagos State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) will soon clamp down on illegal sales and consumption of nitrous oxide substance popularly called ‘laughing gas’.

Mr Umar Adoro, the State commander of the agency, disclosed this in an interview on Tuesday in Lagos.

Adoro said this was in line with the directive by the Chairman and the Chief Executive Officer of the agency, Brig.- Gen. Buba Marwa, to all commands and formations to start an immediate clampdown on the illegal sale of the substance.

He said the substance is commonly used for sedation and pain relief, often by dentists and medical professionals for patients undergoing minor medical procedures.

Adoro added that the abuse was fast emerging, especially by young partygoers or fun-seekers to feel intoxicated or high.

He said the agency would work hard to tackle the emerging trend because of its implication on the nervous system.

“The abuse of the gas slows down brain and body responses. However, the effects of the drug vary depending on the quantity inhaled.

“Taking nitrous oxide can cause feelings of euphoria, relaxation, fits of giggles and laughter – hence, the nickname ‘laughing gas.

“The gas is often transferred from its containers into balloons, from where it’s inhaled for euphoric effects,” Adoro said.

He warned Nigerians who deal on the substance to have a change of heart as their activity negates morality.

He said the anti-narcotic agency would remain ever committed to its mandate of clearing the country of illicit drug trafficking.
