He added that NDLEA officers accosted Oluchukwu travelling to Doha with an Ivorien passport in the name of Hien Narcisse.

NDLEA clarify claims of lopsided promotion

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Wednesday has clarified claims of lopsided promotions in the agency.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Director, Media and Advocacy, of the NDLEA, Mr Femi Babafemi in Abuja.

Babafemi said that elevation of officers and men remains an ongoing exercise based on a number of factors including vacancy.

“The attention of the NDLEA has been drawn to some online reports suggesting lopsided promotion of personnel.

“The agency wishes to state that no such thing exists as elevation of officers and men remains an ongoing exercise based on a number of factors including vacancy.

“Indeed, the issues raised by the category of personnel mentioned in the reports arose in 2011, which was 10 clear years before the current leadership of retired Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa, “he said.

According tom him, however, in a determined bid to motivate the workforce, over 70 per cent of the workforce, a number of who had been stagnated on one rank for 15 to 20 years, were promoted and their ranks harmonised in 2021 soon after Marwa assumed leadership of the Agency.

“Even though more than half of the category of personnel referred to in the reports had been promoted in the recent promotion exercises,

“The ongoing expansion of the agency which creates more vacancies for officers and men to move up, no doubt provides the window for the few not yet affected to be elevated in another exercise underway for the junior ranks.

“Anyone not yet affected can rest assured that the NDLEA Chairman considers their welfare paramount and central to the successes so far achieved by his Leadership, “he said.

Babafemi said the agency would continue to pay attention to the career progression of officers and men in the interest of the overall high productivity goal set for all commands and formations of the agency, “he said.

DLEA is a federal government agency saddled with the task of eradicating drugs abuse, illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substance within the country.

NDLEA busts lethal drug syndicate, arrests members

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA), have arrested members of a syndicate involved in the illicit importation and trafficking of lethal synthetic opioid, Fentanyl.

The Director, Media and Advocacy NDLEA, Mr Femi Babafemi said this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

Babafemi said that the drug was ‘100 times’ stronger than Tramadol and capable of causing mass casualty among the youths population being targeted by the cartels.

He said that the operatives arrested two members of the syndicate: Collins Oguejiofor and Chigozie Uzoma at Ogbogwu market, Onitsha Head Bridge, Onitsha South LGA, Anambra State, in well-coordinated and clinical operations.

Babafemi also said that the arrest was coming on the heels of an alert issued by the anti-narcotics agency on Tuesday, November 22, 2022 that some criminal elements were plotting to flood the Nigerian markets with the drug.

This, he said, was currently responsible for over 70 per cent ‘overdose deaths’ as well as a major contributor to fatal and nonfatal overdoses in the United States.

“According to the CDC in the US, Fentanyl is 80 times as potent as morphine and 100 times more potent than heroin.

“Following credible intelligence and synergy with local and international partners,  NDLEA was able to mobilise necessary assets to trace the illicitly manufactured drug to the Ogbogwu market, Onitsha Head Bridge..

“It was reputed to be the largest drug market in West Africa, after months of undercover monitoring, “he said.

The NDLEA spokesman quoted the Chairman, NDLEA retired Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa as ordering a deployment of operatives to pick members of the syndicate one after the other.

This, he said, was after the agency was convinced and had gathered sufficient evidence to nail the suspects.

“Oguejiofor was the first to be arrested while on a business mission with packets of 100 micrograms of Fentanyl.

“The arrest of Uzoma who is a major dealer in other illicitly manufactured pharmaceutical opioids including Fentanyl, followed.

“While packs of liquid Fentanyl were recovered from Odoh, different quantities of banned and controlled drugs including Fentanyl were seized from Uzoma.

    “They include: Ampules of Fentanyl Injection; Ozempic solution for injection in pre-filled pens; Ampules of Sustanon 250mg/ml; Ampules of Rivavirin injection 200mg/2ml;

“Ampules of Erythropoietin injection; Ampules of Recombinant Anti Rho-D Immunoglobulin injection 300MG; Ampules of Pethidine 100mg/2ml solution for injection and Zoladex 3.6mg Goserelin, ” he said.

Reacting to the arrest of members of the syndicate, Marwa commended all the officers and men of the agency involved in the operation.

He directed them to intensify the crackdown on other members of the cartel who may have gone underground.

“We’ll no doubt hunt down every member of this criminal gang before they do further harm to our public health especially our youth population.

“In the meantime, I’ll like to thank our international partners for the huge confidence in us and their support and partnership for the benefit of humanity.

“In the same vein, I’ll urge parents and other stakeholders to be vigilant, alert and warn their young ones against attempting experimenting with this illicit substance”, Marwa said.

The NDLEA boss reiterated that exposure to the lethal opioid, which could come in different forms, as has been shown by the seizure, may result in pinpoint pupils.

This, he said, included pupil falling asleep or losing consciousness, slow and shallow breathing, choking or gurgling sounds, limp body, pale, blue or cold skin.

  • Abba Kyari: Why we opted for behind closed door trial – NDLEA

Abba Kyari: Why we opted for behind closed door trial – NDLEA

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), on Tuesday, gave reasons it resorted to the trial of the suspended DCP Abba Kyari and his co-defendants behind closed doors.

Counsel for the NDLEA, Mr. Sunday Joseph, told newsmen who were barred from covering the sitting shortly after the case was adjourned by Justice Emeka Nwite of a Federal High Court, Abuja.

Joseph, who said there was security concern about the trial, said the class of witnesses brought to court were undercover witnesses who needed to be protected.

“You see, some of these trials where there are security concern and then we agreed among the lawyers; both myself and the defendants.

“These are class of witnesses that needed to be protected; they are undercover witnesses,” he said.

When asked whether such act would not prevent the public from knowing what transpired in court, he said: “That is why, you know I don’t grant press interview.

“That is why I made an exception to tell you,” he said.

On what happened in the courtroom, Joseph, a director of Legal and Prosecution Department of the NDLEA, said the testimony of an additional witness was taken.

The lawyer said bank documents he sought to be tendered as exhibits were opposed to by the defendants and he responded.

“So ruling of the court is reserved on the admissibility of the evidence we sought to tender to 9 June,” he said.

Mr Michael Mbanefo, lawyer to the 3rd defendant (ASP Bawa James), also told newsmen that evidence of one of the witnesses was taken “but it was scuttled by the documents they wanted to tender which we opposed vehemently. So the case adjourned for ruling.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) had earlier reported that journalists were restrained from covering the trial of Kyari and his co-defendants, following the NDLEA’s application to the effect.

Besides, other lawyers, whose matters were listed on the cause list, were also directed to leave the courtroom for Kyari’s case.

Shortly after the NDLEA’s lawyer made the application, Justice Nwite stood down the hearing to allow lawyers, litigants, visitors, including the journalists move out of the courtroom.

The registrar then announced to lawyers, who had no business in Kyari’s case to step forward and take another date for their cases.

The development generated provocation from lawyers who waited until the judge reconvened.

When Justice Nwite sat to commence proceeding, one of the lawyers, Emmanuel Oluwabiyi, whose case was on number 11 on the cause list, told Nwite that he was in the court for his matter.

Oluwabiyi said he observed that before the judge rose, counsel for the NDLEA made an application.

“I understand that it was directed that everybody in the courtroom should step out because of the instant matter. The bar is also meant to be vacated.

“The feedback I am getting is that when this matter is going to be made, no lawyer should be in

“I am embarrassed by the application my lord,” he said.

Another lawyer, Mr. Ramiah Imhanaede, also aligned with Oluwabiyi’s submission.

Justice Nwite then pleaded with lawyers who were not in Kyari’s matter to bear with the court in the interim.

He said their matters too would be heard as soon as hearing was over.

NAN reports that Kyari and other police officers, who are on suspension, are being charged by the anti-narcotic agency on allegations bordering on tampering and dealing with part of the 21.8 kilogrammes of cocaine recovered from two convicts.

The four accused police officers include ACP Sunday J. Ubia, ASP Bawa James, Inspector Simon Agirigba, and Inspector John Nuhu listed as 2nd to 5th defendants respectively.

The NDLEA accused the police officers, who had been on suspension pending the hearing and determination of the matter, of alleged compromise.

They were arraigned alongside Chibunna Umeibe and Emeka Ezenwanne, who conspired with some other persons (now at large), to trafficked the hard drugs into the country.

Umeibe and Ezenwanne were said to have been arrested at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu by the Inspector General of Police (IGP)’s Intelligence Response Team (IRT) led by Kyari based on their suspicious trafficking in hard drugs.

The suspects were subsequently brought to Abuja and handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation.

Although the two suspects pleaded guilty to the counts preferred against them bordering on the importation of 21.35kg of cocaine into the country, the police officers on trial pleaded not guilty to all the counts against them.

The court, on June 14, 2022, convicted and sentenced Umeibe and Ezenwanne to two years imprisonment.

  • NDLEA sends strong warning to skit makers

NDLEA sends strong warning to skit makers

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA), has warned skit makers to stop using its logo and jackets in their production.

The warning is contained in a statement issued by the NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Mr Femi Babafemi, on Tuesday in Abuja.

Babafemi warned that those fond of the indiscretion of misusing its official jackets to mislead and create false impressions, to be ready for the consequences

He was reacting to a trending video of some people wearing red jackets similar to the ones used by officers and men of the agency, which the Agency had disclaimed a year ago.

The spokesman said that the agency had in a well-publicised statement on May 21, 2022, stated that the video was a skit produced by one Mathew C Eze who lived in the Lekki area of Lagos.

“A year after, the video has returned to the social media space, a development that has led to several enquiries from concerned members of the public on the authenticity of the content of the video.

“We will like to reiterate again that the confusion the controversial video has created in the minds of members of the public underscores the need for some social media content producers to show restraint.

“Also, they need to show responsibility and decorum in how they misuse paraphernalia of law enforcement officers, to avoid misconceptions and insinuations,” he said.
