NDLEA pursuing vendetta against Senator Ashiru with baseless allegations -Anti-Corruption group

The Independent Crusade Against Corruption & Injustice (ICACI), has described as “baseless” and “afterthought witch-hunt”, for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), to have come out against the Deputy Leader of the Senate, Senator Yisa Ashiru with spurious allegations.

The NDLEA, through its Spokesman, Femi Babafemi, had alleged that, the Senator’s personal house situated in GRA, Ilorin, Kwara State, has been used to

The NDLEA alleged that the Senator’s residence was raided after intelligence revealed it was being used as a drug joint, claiming two of the Senator’s aides were arrested during the raid, while one managed to escape.

The NDLEA’s allegations came barely 24 hours, after the Senate Deputy Leader, made contributions on the Bill for an Act to establish National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation, which would take away, the job of rehabilitation and post-convict orientation of drug addicts from the NDLEA.

In his contributions, Senator Ashiru, apparently speaking based on informed position, described the NDLEA as “the most corrupt and compromised agency”, hence, his support for the establishment of the new institute.

In a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja Sunday evening, and signed by the President of the anti-corruption group, ICACI, Dr. Guy Fredrick Abu, the Chairman of NDLEA, Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd.), was given 7 days ultimatum to publicly apologize to Senator Ashiru and the institution of the National Assembly of Nigeria, to save the country of any international embarrassment.

The group said, it had conducted a preliminary investigation and “can boldy submit that the NDLEA is pursuing personal vendetta with the Distinguished Senator, for standing up to support a Bill which the NDLEA has been doing so much underground to kill”.

“If it is not personal vendetta and afterthought witch-hunt, how on earth, would an agency of the government that wants to be taken seriously, would claim it arrested and prosecuted people close to the Senator, to the extent of saying the Lawmaker sent his Personal Assistant to intervene on behalf of the accused, but would keep it underground for over 3 years, only to come out after it was known that the man supported a Bill which the NDLEA felt as rival?

“Even though the agency didn’t mention the name of the court where the accused were tried, but even if the Senator was mentioned in connection to the crime, what has the NDLEA been waiting for all these years, until he contested and won election and still emerged as Principal Officer of the 10th Senate?

“If the NDLEA wants Nigerians to believe them, it means they have been covering this allegation, until such a time that they felt the Senator started supporting establishment of another agency. How many more high profile personalities the NDLEA may have also covered in this regard? Assuming we want to believe their cock and bull story. It then confirms the submission of the Senator that the agency is corrupt.

“But our preliminary investigation has revealed Senator Ashiru to be an upright man in the society, both at home and in Abuja. Ashiru is 68 years old man who has never tasted red wine or any form of alcohol since he was a child. We had had cause to discuss with 2 classmates of his – one from his primary school days and another, his University mate; in the course of our investigations.

“We can categorically tell Nigerians that the NDLEA only wants to embarrass Nigeria and National Assembly before the international community, because, already, nothing is left in their pride, as far as professionalism is concerned.

“We are giving the Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA just 7 days, to come out openly and apologize to Senator Ashiru, the institution of National Assembly and Nigerians in general. Failure to do this, our members shall mobilize other Nigerians to occupy the NDLEA headquarters, until the needful is done”, the statement added.

  • Illicit drugs: Senate probes NDLEA’s allegation against Senator Ashiru

Illicit drugs: Senate probes NDLEA’s allegation against Senator Ashiru

The Senate on Tuesday constituted an ad-hoc committee to investigate drug distribution allegations by National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) against Sen. Oyelola Ashiru.(APC-Kwara).

This followed the adoption of a point of order brought by Ashiru under Order 42 of Senate Standing Rules which entailed personal explanations.

NAN reports that the committee has Sen. Enyinnaya Abaribe as Chairman.

Other members of the committee are: Senators Ede Dafinone, Afolabi Shaibu, Shehu Kaka and Lawal Usman.

The committee, which has one week to present its report, is to invite NDLEA to speak to the allegation and justify its claims against Ashiru.

President of Senate, Godswill Akpabio, had, before announcing the composition of the committee, said Ashiru had actually approached him about the breach of his fundamental rights and privileges.

Akpabio, however, said whatever the NDLEA did was based on Ashiru’s submission, when he said that the integrity of NDLEA officials should be looked into.

He said it was surprising that NDLEA had never invited, arrested or charged Ashiru to court on any drug-related issue before now.

“If they felt you were a drug baron, they would have arrested you when you were 30, 50, 60, 65 years, not at the age of 68, when you made contributions on the floor of the senate on a bill to establish a drug rehabilitation centre.

“We in the senate see you as a gentleman to the core and we must take this issue seriously and call this agency to order because an injury to one is an injury to all.

“So it is my personal view that the senate invites NDLEA to come and justify the allegations, falling to do so, the senate will take very drastic action,” he said.

Earlier in his  explanation, Ashiru said he had expressed his concern and contributions on the bill based on information from his constituency on the negative effects of drug consumption and trafficking.

He said one of his constituents had asserted that in the last two years, more than 50 persons had lost their sanity because of drugs.

The senator said there were visible drug barons who were making money from distribution of drugs.

He said that the increase in drug-related crime had resulted in his contribution, advising that the senate looked into the operation of NDLEA officials, especially on the allegations of corruption among them.

Ashiru said that he had also supported the establishment of an institute for awareness and rehabilitation of persons affected by drugs.

He said that he was presenting his personal observations in order to explain and clear himself of the insinuations that he was involved in drug distribution.

“I want to ascertain that in my life, I am 68 years old now, I cannot even identify cannabis or any drug.

“Beyond taking water, I don’t take alcohol; I don’t even take carbonated drinks, beyond taking water and other foods,” he said.

Ashiru said the basis for the debased publication against him could only be traced to his contributions at the plenary on a bill to establish a drug rehabilitation centre.

He said rather than NDLEA addressing the issues raised by the senate, it resorted to deceit.

The lawmaker further stated that the report was an attempt to infringe on the senate’s right to free debate on issues of national interest.

He said the resolve of the senate on the bill was that the menace of drug abuse should be frontally confronted, no matter the personality involved.

Ashiru described NDLEA’s allegations against him as unfounded and malicious.

He said it was an attempt to undermine his credibility as a senator and impede his ability to fully participate in parliamentary debates.

“For the protection of the senate, we must do something about it,” he said.

  • Illicit drugs: Deputy Senate Leader responds to raid of his home by NDLEA

Illicit drugs: Deputy Senate Leader responds to raid of his home by NDLEA

The Deputy Senate Leader, Sen. Oyelola Ashiru, has denied the “wrong and fallacious” impressions created by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in a statement it issued on Monday.

Ashiru, who represents Kwara South Senatorial District under the All Progressives Congress (APC), made the statement signed by his Legislative Aide, Olaitan Adeyanju in Abuja,.

The NDLEA alleged that Ashiru’s house in Ilorin, Kwara, was raided, and illicit drugs were found.

This accusation comes on the heels of Ashiru’s declaration on the senate floor that the NDLEA is corrupt.

The statement reads, “We find it preposterous and mere fishing for justification that NDLEA had to wait for the senator’s observation on the floor of the Senate before making its spurious allegations.

“As a matter of fact, Ashiru never employed any aid bearing Ibrahim Mohammed and Mohammed Yahaya as bandied by NDLEA.

“The agency claimed that it operatives visited the senator’s Ilorin house and found nothing incriminating.

“The entire house was searched and nothing incriminating was found. If any drugs were found on certain persons mentioned by the NDLEA, it is rational to ask at which court of law were the culprits charged?

“It is also important to state that Senator Ashiru has not sent any aide to the NDLEA to influence the dropping of drug allegations against anyone known as Tosin Odepidian.

“Indeed, all the names mentioned by the agency are strange and none works directly or indirectly with
    Ashiru.

”The NDLEA has the duty to take anyone suspected of drug dealing to court rather than name-calling and engaging in media trial.

“This clarification aims to set the record straight and address the misleading information circulated by the NDLEA.

“It is an open secret that many criminals, cultists, armed robbers and drug addicts find their way back into business after gratifying law enforcement officers.

‘The NDLEA ought to search its house and fish out bad eggs rather than seeking cheap publicity.

“Ashiru remains committed to serving the people of Kwara South and upholding the truth at all times in the search for strict professionalism among our law enforcement agencies”.

  • Just in: Days after Senator Kawu raised alarm that lawmakers use drugs, NDLEA operatives uncover drugs in serving senator’s house

Just in: Days after Senator Kawu raised alarm that lawmakers use drugs, NDLEA operatives uncover drugs in serving senator’s house

Barely one week after Senator Sulaiman Kawu raised an alarm that lawmakers use drugs, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said it has recovered illicit drugs from the personal house of Kwara South Senator, Oyeyola Ashiru, attributing the lawmaker’s recent outburst against the agency to this.

TNG recalls that Senator Kawu had granted an interview where he declared that lawmakers too are involved in illicit drugs business.

Also, Senator Ashiru during plenary on October 15 said: “The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency is corrupt and compromised…” calling for the establishment of another anti-drug agency.

But the chairman of the agency, Brig Gen Buba Marwa (Rtd), during a briefing on Monday, said the Senator’s outburst was borne out of vendetta rather than based on any altruistic motive or national interest.

Represented by the Director, Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, Marwa said the agency remains undeterred as it will continue to dismantle illicit drug networks including the one operating in the lawmaker’s house.

Babafemi was in the company of NDLEA Area Commander, Offa Area Commander, Kwara State, Ayodeji Olaoluwa and the Officer in charge of Special Enforcement, Kwara State Command during the briefing.

Responding to the accusation, Marwa said: “While acknowledging the great work of the Senate towards the upliftment of Nigeria and Nigerians especially their support for the ongoing concerted efforts towards the amendment of the NDLEA Act, the Agency however is duty-bound to respond to the unprovoked attack against it by Senator Ashiru during his contribution to the debate on a new bill for an Act to establish the National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation on Tuesday, October 15, 2024.”

He said the agency waited for a whole week hoping the lawmaker will clarify his position on such a weighty allegation against it but failing to do that, it is left with “no option than to come out and set the record straight for the benefit of other distinguished members of the Senate, our local and international partners as well as the general public.”

He continued: “There is no doubt that setting up another agency is within the power of the Senate and if we are invited to contribute to the debate we will be willing to offer our opinion.

“While we cannot fault the power of the senate on that, yet for a member of the upper chamber to have made such an unfounded and unwarranted categorical statement against the agency led us to look inward to see what could have been responsible for such a carpeting general statement.

“What we found was shocking, and we concluded that his statement came from a place of vendetta and certainly not out of public interest or any altruistic motive.

  • Married women don’t require husband’s approval to travel – NDLEA

Married women don’t require husband’s approval to travel – NDLEA

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has clarified that married women no longer require letter of approval from their husbands to travel abroad.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports NDLEA to have said the requirement has been dropped in an ongoing review of the entire procedure for visa clearance issued by the agency.

The NDLEA made the clarification in a statement released on Thursday by Femi Babafemi, Director of Media and Advocacy, NDLEA National Headquarters, Abuja.

The requirement had sparked discussions about gender equality and individual autonomy on social media. In addition to the letter of approval from the husband, a married woman was also required to submit his passport photograph.

However, NDLEA explained that the inclusion of that item abinitio arose following some ugly developments in some source countries. The agency confirmed the requirement has been jettisoned.

The statement reads: “The entire procedure for visa clearance issued by the NDLEA as required by some countries is currently undergoing review and the requirement for a married woman to present a letter of approval from her husband to travel is one of the items that the Agency has since jettisoned as a non mandatory item on the list.

“The inclusion of that item abinitio arose following some ugly developments in some source countries. Members of the public are assured that the item has been deleted from the list of requirements in the ongoing review exercise, which will be made public in the coming days”.
