Crisis: APC holds emergency NEC meeting Dec 8

An emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been scheduled for Tuesday, December 8.

This is coming barely after five months a similar emergency NEC meeting held at the Presidential Villa.

The Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the party, Yekini Nabena, who disclosed this in a statement on Sunday night in Abuja, said the meeting will review the party’s position and set agenda for the next moves.

According to the statement formal invitation has been sent to APC NEC members by National Secretary of the party’s Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC), Sen. John James Akpanudoedehe.

It further stated in line with the COVID-19 public health protocols, “the NEC meeting will be virtual. Login details will be sent to APC NEC members in due course. The meeting is slated for 11am at the Council Chamber, State House, Abuja.”

At the last emergency NEC meeting on June 25, the Comrade Adams Oshiomhole’s National Working Committee (NWC) was dissolved and a 13-man Caretaker) Extra-Ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) under the chairmanship of Gov. Mai Mala Buni was inaugurated.

The committee was saddled with the core mandate of reconciling all aggrieved members of the party, resolve all intra-party crisis and conduct National convention of the party for the election of new members of the NWC.

The caretaker committee plans to commence registration and revalidation of party membership register, a move that may be ratified at the next week NEC meeting.

Crisis: APC Governors seek presidential intervention

The Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Alhaji Atiku Bagudu, has said that all contentious issues surrounding the leadership crisis confronting the All Progressives Congress (APC) will soon be reconciled.

Bagudu stated this when he addressed State House correspondents at the end of a closed door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House, Abuja, on Monday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Bagudu was accompanied to the State House by Governors Simon Lalong of Plateau and Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa.

He said the governors were in the State House to share with the president the Progressive Governors’ position on how best to address the lingering crisis facing the APC.

“Today, my brothers the Governor of Plateau State Simon Lalong and the Governor of Jigawa State Abubakar Badaru and myself visited President Muhammadu Buhari as our party leader, as the leader that millions of Nigerian trust, to discuss party issues and the position of the Progressive Governors to support all steps to unify and bring about peaceful resolution in our party the All Progressives Congress.

“The President listened to us attentively and discussed with us as a father, as a party leader and gave us all the assurance needed to know that resolution of contentious issues will soon be arrived at.”

Bagudu, who is the governor of Kebbi, described President Buhari as a democrat that allows all arms of the party to function according to the provisions of the party’s constitution.

“At all times the President has shown that he is a democrat. He is not running the party; yes, he is the party leader but he allows the party’s organs to do and decide what should be done.

“He is very hesitant to use his standing even as party leader talk less of his authority as President of the country to direct things,’’ he added.

According to the governor, in any political assembly, there are bound to be recurring issues because a political party is never a perfect assembly.

Bagudu agreed that it was necessary for the National Executive Committee of the party to meet as part of steps towards resolving the crisis.

“I believe that whatever needs to be done including the possibility of calling any of the organs of the party that is necessary for the resolution of lingering issues will be done immediately.

“Let me again say that the party is never a perfect assembly.

“There will always be issues and that is why we talk, but yes certainly, organs of the party needs to meet and Mr President without directing is always supporting the necessity of party organs meeting appropriately,’’ he said.

Leadership crisis: APC holds emergency NEC meeting Tuesday

Amidst rebellion by some members against the leadership of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has been scheduled to hold in Abuja on Tuesday, March 17 at 3pm.

The organ of the party last met in November 2019 and skirted the demand by some members of the NEC to suspend Oshiomhole then as chairman, over his alleged dictatorial tendencies and paralysing the party’s organs. The rebels had also blamed Oshiomhole for the party’s losses in Zamfara, Rivers, Bauchi and others.

Venue for the new meeting is the National Executive Committee Hall at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, now under cordon by the police and the DSS, following the crisis over Oshiomhole’s chairmanship.

A sign of crisis in the party was that the meeting notice was signed by acting National Secretary, Chief Victor T. Giadom and not Architect Waziri Bulama who was named on Wednesday as substantive replacement for Mai Mala Buni, who had moved on to become governor of Yobe State.

Giadom invited all NEC members to attend the emergency meeting in line with Article 25 (B) (II) of the Constitution of the Party.

The call came hours after the APC Progressive Governors Forum also called for an emergency meeting of the NEC.

President Buhari as the national leader of the party had met on Thursday with Oshiomhole and Atiku Bagudu who leads the Progressive Governors Forum.

The agenda of the NEC which last met in December, is predictably going to centre over Oshiomhole’s position, now being challenged in the court.

The NEC may also consider the tempest building over the recent appointments of key officers, supposedly approved by a meeting of National Working Committee of the party on 14 January.

Arch. Waziri Bulama was appointed as the Party’s Acting National Secretary. He replaces Mai Mala Buni, who is now the Governor of Yobe State.

Former Oyo governor Abiola Ajimobi has also been appointed as deputy national chairman(south). He replaces Adeniyi Adebayo, who is now the minister for industries.

Mr. Paul Chukwuma is the new National Auditor.

The appointments were said to have followed nominations from the respective zones, according to a statement by National Publicity Secretary, Lanre Issa-Onilu.

But Ekiti state APC has faulted the appointment of Ajimobi, as the replacement for Adebayo. It wanted Senator Gbenga Aluko to take the position.

PGF’s Director-General, Salihu Lukman described the Abuja High court injunction against Oshiomhole as a “big opportunity” to reposition the party ahead of the 2023 general election.

The forum, while acknowledging the existence of the conflicting court orders of the Abuja and Kano federal high courts, called for the appointment of an acting chairman for the APC until the determination of the issue relating to the legality of the suspension of Oshiomhole in court.

“The reality is that our party APC is faced with a big problem whereby none of our organs are meeting as provided by the constitution. In fact, we are even not sure who our members are. There is, therefore, the urgent need to resume the process of party building with confirmation of our members as well as recruiting new members,” Lukman said in a statement.

“We need to invoke provisions of Article 17 (vi) which provides that in the event of a vacancy, “the relevant Party organ shall appoint another person to act in his place pending ratification by the National Convention or Congress.”

The forum claimed that members of the Oshiomhole-led NWC have constituted themselves into an unaccountable assembly in the affairs of the party.

“Already, this is the second year since the last Convention in 2018 where Comrade Oshiomhole-led NWC was elected. What this means is that with or without our current challenges we are actually due for a National Convention,” Lukman said.

Lukman said once a National Executive Convention (NEC) is convened, there will be an “emergence a new atmosphere in the party that will promote reconciliation and re-orient the party to regain its political profile as a party.”

Oshiomhole is currently in a legal battle to keep his position.

Justice Danlemi Senchi of Abuja High Court on Wednesday granted an order of interim injunction restraining Oshiomhole from parading himself as the APC national chairman.

However, a Federal High Court In Kano on Thursday set aside the ruling of FCT High Court suspending Oshiomhole.

Justice Lewis Allagoa of Kano High Court ordered the police and Department of State Service (DSS) to provide security for Oshiomhole to resume in his office.

Oshiomhole had also gone further to file an appeal at the Appeal court.

  • NEC meeting: Protesters storm APC secretariat, demand Oyegun’s removal

Some group of youths under various coalitions on Monday stormed the National Secretariat of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, to demand the removal of its national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the party had earlier fixed Tuesday (today) for its National Executive Committee meeting to be presided over by the embattled chairman.

Members of the Save APC and Democracy Youth Vanguard, who carried placards, disrupted the flow of traffic around the secretariat. They demanded the audit of the party’s books and the cancellation of the non-elective convention. The party, they said, must fully support the anti-corruption fight.

While the protest was going on, Oyegun drove into the secretariat. The youths got more vocal, shouting: “Oyegun must go”. The police and the APC secretary prevented them from entering the building.

The leader of the group, Peter Oyewole said: “Since 2015, the budget of APC has not been made public. Since 2015, the ruling party has not held a single meeting. These are enough to remove the National Chairman. We demand the removal of Oyegun now.

We are also saying enough is enough to imposition of candidates at all levels by Oyegun-led NWC tnat is currently going on in this party, because in any party where there is imposition, there cannot be fairness; any party where there is imposition, there cannot be equity. The imposition in APC today is just rubbishing the anti-corruption war of President Buhari.

If Odigie-Oyegun is not removed within the next one month, the APC youths will picket this national secretariat and make it a no-go area to everybody; the staff, the officials and even the security staff will be chased out of the Secretariat and none of them will be allowed to come in here.”

The man (Oyegun) can not manage success. Since 2015 that the APC won the presidential election, tell me a single NEC meeting that has been held? This man can not galvanise support for the president.

What we are saying is that if Oyegun continues like this we are going to have imposition at all levels in APC come 2019. This is a democracy whereby many wings can grow up to push for the interest of many.”

Another youths group within the party under the auspices of APC Youths Solidarity Forum said the party should find ways of improving its finances. Besides, it should address the anxieties being felt by various party stalwarts, the group said.

The group said the APC should be strengthened as it remains the only legitimate platform to obtain political power in the country.

In a letter to the President, signed by the forum’s convener, Danesi Momoh Prince, the group said the situation in the party urgently needed attention and intervention “if we must retain the presidency come 2019 and remain in power”

The letter reads in part: “The President needs to take more than a passing interest in the activities of the party and ensure that the party is supreme. There have been alleged schemes to remove the party’s national chairman from office because of his perceived loyalty to Mr. President.

The alleged plot is aimed at achieving sinister political ends in the lead up to the 2019 general elections. If the plan succeeds, it will allow the sponsors install their stooges and hijack the party in the lead up to the election. This is a red flag that the President must take seriously and thwart.”

On appointments, the group said: “Many Federal Government boards, agencies and parastatals appointees who were put in office by the immediate-past administration are still in office. They are not loyal to the APC which they feel had no hand in their emergence.

There is need to quickly review these appointments and replace them with qualified APC members. Vacant positions should thereafter be quickly filled with APC members who feel frustrated because they seem not to have benefited from the victory of their party. It is also very necessary that these appointments have the heavy input of the APC national leadership to ensure that the right persons who worked for the party are appointed.

The state of affairs of the party, particularly its poor finances, has been a regular item in the media. While there exists a funding stream that should normally come from collection of membership dues and contribution, the reality is that this is grossly insufficient.

It is embarrassing that a ruling party does not have funds to meet its basic needs. The National Caucus and NEC needs to urgently work out a sustainable funding model to enable the party to function properly.”
