NEC sets date for governors to submit report on state Police

The National Economic Council (NEC) has urged all states that are yet to make submissions on the proposed State Police to submit their report on or before Sept. 9.

The acting governor of Oyo state, Chief Adebayo Lawal, made this known while briefing newsmen at the end of 144 NEC meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Wednesday.

”At today’s NEC meeting an update for the establishment of State Police was considered and this was as a result of security challenges that we have across the nation.

”North East, North West, North Central, South West, South East and South South, so that we will have a robust security in our nation.

”And for that purpose sometime in the past, NEC considered the establishment of a state police and asked states to make submissions for consideration.

“Today all states where supposed to submit for consideration of the NEC. Incidentally four states couldn’t submit.

”And for that purpose NEC decided that all states must make their submission on or before Monday next week.

”Otherwise whatever decision NEC takes on the establishment of state police will be binding on those states that refuse to make submissions.”

  • Tussle: NNPP wants INEC to update NEC records

Tussle: NNPP wants INEC to update NEC records

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has urged  the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to update its records on the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) membership.

The party in a statement on Saturday by its Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman, Dr Temitope Aluko, also urged the media to respect the NNPP constitution by recognising only officers duly elected in accordance with the party’s constitution.

Aluko said that NNPP chieftains like Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso and the entire membership of the old National Working Committee (NWC) led by Alhaji Abbah Kawu had since been expelled and INEC appropriately and duly informed in that regard.

He noted that INEC had no powers to meddle in the internal affairs of a political party.

“Once again, may we use this public space to remind the INEC, through its Chairman, that we have requested for the urgent need to update their records of the National Executive Committee of the NNPP.

“It is instructive to indicate herein that the constitution of the NNPP is supreme and binding on all members, without prejudice to the overarching Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Act.

“With the nation’s Constitution being the unquestionable groundnorm, every other establishment in Nigeria derives its powers of establishment and operations from the said Constitution,” Aluko said.

According to him, the mandate and powers of INEC to register, control and regulate political parties are constitutionally provided and the party is aware of this.

“However, INEC does not have powers to meddle in the internal administration and management of political parties.

“Otherwise, it will be  tantamount to avoidable breach of the constitutional rights of Nigerians to freely associate.

“What we try to put across herein is simple and unambiguous.

“The extant powers of the board members of the NNPP in relation to resolution of the party’s internal matters are very clear.

“The board has powers to call to order,  any member  who acts contrary to the its norms,” he said.

The BOT chairman said that NNPP chieftains like Kwankwaso, Elder Buba Galadima and the sacked and defunct National Working Committee, NWC, led by kawu had  been in gross abuse of the constitutional provisions of the new NNPP with impunity.

According to him,  the unceremonious exit of its former National Chairman, Prof. Rufai Alkali, Prof. Angwe Samuel and Sen. Suleiman Hunkuyi among others were pointers that all was not well with the internal administration of the party.

He decried issues bothering on corruption, high handedness, lack of transparency and accountability on the part of the defunct NNPP National Working Committee (NWC) members.

“All these avoidable acts of gross misconduct led to the invitation of the concerned persons by the Board of Trustees for explanation but they refused to provide answers to the queries.

“Indeed, the board had to invoke its inherent powers by calling them all to order and decisively expelling them.

“The action of the board, having subsequently been ratified by the General Assembly of the Party, has been communicated to the Chairman of INEC, and the commission duly acknowledged same and pledged to update its records.

“The surprising and very embarrassing thing today is that INEC is still dealing with the expelled members of the party.

“This is aside the fact that this matter is pending before a Federal High Court, with INEC duly served and notified,” Aluko said.

He said that while the party acknowledged the powers of INEC to regulate and control political parties, the commission should be seen to act as a neutral body to all political parties and try to respect the internal administration of each of the parties.

According to him, under these circumstances, it shall be more responsible on the part of INEC as a regulator, having received a notification, to invite both parties with a view to ascertaining facts and be in a better position to make an informed decision.

” The chairman of INEC, and the commission itself, shall take a cue from the judiciary at the moment and strive to add value to the ethos of democracy, rule of law and conflict resolution,” he said.

On the media, Aluko said that the practitioners should know that there was no faction in the NNPP.

He added: “Rather, Kwankwaso and the entire membership of the old NWC led by Kawu have since been expelled and INEC appropriately and duly informed in that regard.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the new principal officers of the NNPP are Dr Gilbert Agbo Major as the National Chairman, Comrade Ogini Samuel as the Secretary General and Dr TKO Aluko as the Chairman, Board of Trustees.

“Dr Aniebonam Boniface is the Founder and Spiritual Leader of the NNPP and Gov.  Abbah Yusuf of Kano State is the Leader of the Party.”

He said that the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) should be allowed to operate without any strings from the INEC.

“By so doing, we shall be adding value to the cause of genuine democracy in Nigeria,” he said.

NLC adamant as NEC takes position on nationwide indefinite strike

The National Economic Council (NEC) has urged the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) not to abandon dialogue in their quest for better welfare for its members.

The Council also appealed to the unions to suspend its planned nationwide indefinite strike schedule to start on Oct. 3.

Gov. Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau stated this while briefing State House Correspondents at the end of the NEC meeting on Thursday in Abuja.

He said that the nation was at a very critical moment in its history, adding that some states took over such labour crisis when they assumed office in May.

According to him, some of such states just resolved the crisis and will be unfair for the labour to return to another industrial action.

The Plateau governor said that the proposed industrial action would have immense effect on the economy of both the states and the Federal government.

He said that the NEC expressed genuine concern about the situation in the country and appealed for calm and patience among Nigerians.

“The National Economic Council (NEC) deliberated on the planned indefinite strike by the National leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to proceed on an indefinite strike on Oct. 3, 2023.

“The council noted further the implications of the planned strike on the economy and the nation and thus urge members to continue to engage with the leadership of their respective states.

“It appeals to them to suspend the action and to continue on the path of dialogue with the Federal Government. This is the appeal of the council.”

He said that the council appreciated the concerns raised by the NLC to have those issues address, adding that NEC also appealed for time to address the concerns of labour.

“We also believe that President Bola Tinubu will be addressing the nation on Oct. 1, and some of the concerns of labour will be appropriately addressed in the president’s speech.

“It is therefore important to note that it’s a federation issue, so whatever happens the labour is represented in all the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“And NEC is appealing that discussion should continue at the state levels because there will be peculiarities as to the issues to be addressed concerning the demands of labour and therefore dialogue is the way to go.”

No agreement with FG to suspend strike – NLC

Earlier, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) said it has no agreement with the Federal Government to call off the planned indefinite strike for Oct. 3.

Mr Benson Upah, Head of Information and Public Affairs in NLC said this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

It would be recalled that the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had at the end of the joint National Executive Council meeting declared an indefinite strike beginning from Tuesday to press home their demands.

Upah was reacting to a statement allegedly issued by Mr Olajide Oshundun, Director, Press and Public Relations in the Ministry of Labour and Employment.

Upah said there were some inconsistencies in the statement which include the proposed strike and the illegal occupation of the secretariat of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

“Accordingly, we find it necessary to make clarifications. Firstly, we do not have any agreement with the government to suspend the planned strike action.

“Neither do we have any date for a meeting with the government that may lead to the suspension of the proposed strike.

“While we do not intend to demean or minimise the office of the Honourable Minister of Labour and Employment, this matter is beyond the Ministry.

“This should have been obvious to them during our most recent meeting,” he added.

He, therefore, commended the role played by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Mr Simon Lalong in securing the release of the executives of the NURTW from unlawful, illegal police detention.

Upah added: ”We take exception to the ministry describing these executives as factional leaders.

“They were lawfully elected into office. We still find it necessary to advise the police and those elements behind their travails to desist from this despicable and shameful conduct.

“They are advised to retrace their steps. If democracy is to be of meaning to us, then we should resist the urge or temptation for impunity. Enough is enough.”

Fuel Subsidy Removal: NEC endorses mass deployment of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles

The National Economic Council (NEC) has approved the planned mass deployment of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles to all states for public

Abiola noted that the decision to approve the proposal is part of the resolutions at the NEC meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Shettima said the federal government will vigorously pursue the mass deployment of CNG and electric vehicles nationwide.

  • Palliatives: NEC dumps Buhari’s social register, says it lacks integrity

Palliatives: NEC dumps Buhari’s social register, says it lacks integrity

The National Economic Council (NEC) has said that palliatives to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal will be implemented using new registers created by states rather than those utilised by the last administration.

The decision was taken at the NEC meeting held on Thursday, July 20, presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

The Council agreed that the register used by the Muhammadu Buhari’s led administration to implement the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) lacked integrity as the criteria for its compilation were ambiguous.

Anambra State governor Charles Soludo noted after the meeting that many of the poorest Nigerians are unbanked, which makes it impossible to digitally transfer money to them.

“We need to face the problem of the fact that we don’t have a credible register,” Soludo said.

He added that through formal and informal strategies, states could easily identify recipients of the palliatives.

The Council agreed that integrity tests would be carried out on the proposed registers.

In the same vein, government officials were urged to reduce the cost of governance in their various organisations.

In June, NEC recommended palliatives for workers and poor Nigerians during its inaugural meeting, under the President Bola Tinubu administration, to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal in the country.

The recommendation came sequel to Tinubu’s directive that the Council should come up with options to ease the effects of subsidy removal.

Bauchi State governor Bala Mohammed disclosed after the inaugural meeting that the Council considered paying the sum of N702 billion as cost of living allowances to civil servants.

“Various scenarios were given by the presenter on the issue of national salaries, income and wages, and this N702 billion-plus was suggested as cost of living adjustment allowance by the organised labour, and the other one is a petroleum allowance,” Mohammed said in June.

Tinubu had asked the National Assembly to approve an $800 million loan to ease the hardships caused by the subsidy removal.

He had initially decided that 12 million poor households would receive N8,000 monthly over six months from the loan to assist with the rising cost of living resulting from the hike in fuel prices.

Barely one week to the National Caucus and the National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and governors under the platform of the ruling party, Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) are to meet (Tuesday).

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) had reported that the Caucus and NEC meetings is slated for July 10th and 11th respectively.

A source at the party secretariat said the meeting was a move by the leadership of the NWC to get the buying-in of the governors elected under the platform of the party of the agenda for the planned Caucus and NEC meetings..

According to the source, the meeting is aimed at getting members of the PGF, a critical organ of the party to endorse yet to be approved audit report submitted to the NWC by an external audit firm engaged by Senator Abdullahi Adamu-led NWC.

It was learnt that the approval of the audit report suffered a hitch during the last NWC meeting when it was presented, as members of the committee demanded that the Secretariat ought to have provided them with copies of the report before the meeting to enable proper deliberation on the report before it’s approval for presentation at the NEC meeting.

The NWC is required by the APC Constitution to present the party’s audit report to the highest decision-making organ (NEC) of the party at its meeting.

Another reliable source Said that the meeting may also look into the intra-leadership crisis within the NWC, especially the controversy between the APC National Vice Chairman (North West), Salihu Lukman and the National Chairman Abdullahi Adamu and National Secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore over allegations of breaching constitutional provisions.

The national publicity secretary of the party Felix Morka also confirmed the meeting.

“Yes, the meeting between PGF and NWC is scheduled to be held on Tuesday July 4, 2023,” Morka said.

JUST IN: NLC holds emergency NEC meeting on fuel subsidy removal

Following the subsidy removal which has brought about an increase in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit, the Nigeria Labour Congress has commenced an emergency National Executive Council meeting in Abuja.

The meeting which started a few minutes past 12 noon has in attendance executive members of the affiliate unions of the congress.

The NLC is expected to inform the public of its final decision following the meeting with the representatives of the Federal Government which ended in deadlock.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) recalls that President Bola Tinubu, while delivering his inaugural speech on Monday, May 29, 2023, stated that “subsidy is gone”.

The President’s declaration on Monday led to increase in panic buying with some filling stations across the country changing the pump price of the Premium Motor Spirit to as high as N550 per litre.

On Wednesday, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited adjusted the fuel price with states having different templates.

The organised labour comprising Trade Union Congress and the Nigeria Labour Congress described the move by Tinubu and the NNPCL as a “joke taken too far”.

Even as President Tinubu said on Monday that the subsidy on fuel, when removed, will be channelled into the development of other key sectors.

The outcome of today’s NEC meeting will go a long way in determining whether the threat by organized labour to embark on a nationwide industrial action would be cemented.

The Maritime union on Thursday gave a notice that it would down tools by next week Monday.
