    7 persons rescued from collapsed building in Kano

    Seven persons have so far been rescued from a building which collapsed on Beirut Road, Kano on Tuesday.

    Many others are still trapped in the rubble, spokesman of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, said in Kano.

    “We received a distress call about the collapse at about 3.30 p.m. and sent our rescue team to the three-storey building under construction, but used for the business of selling cell phones,’’ he said.

    Abdullahi said those rescued were immediately taken to the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Kano for treatment.

    Operatives of the National Emergency Management Agency, those of the State Emergency Management Agency, the Red Cross, and the Police and sister agencies are still at the scene to rescue more trapped victims.

    Abuja building collapse: 2 dead, 5 rescued

    Two persons were feared dead on Friday, while five were rescued from rubble after a storey building collapsed in Kubwa Satellite town in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

    The building, which was under construction at Hamza Abdullahi Street Off Gado Nasco Road, equally housed a shopping mall.

    The rescued operation was carried out by a combined team of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council and Federal Roads Maintenance Agency.

    Also among the rescued team were the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps and others.

    One of the residents, Mrs Chinyere Okah confirmed that the building which was being converted from a shopping mall to a residential apartment collapsed on Thursday night at about 10:30 p.m.

    The Director-General, FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Alhaji Abbas Idriss, confirmed that two persons lost their lives in the incident, while the trapped persons had been rescued.

    Abbas explained that the agency received a distress call about the incident at 11.45 pm on Thursday evening and thereafter activated its stakeholders to the scene.

    He revealed that five persons were rescued and taken to Kubwa District Hospital, noting that two of the patients had since been discharged.

    “As a follow up to the developing story of the collapsed building at Kubwa, a suburb in the FCT, the two trapped persons in the rubble have been rescued fatally injured.

    “The bodies of the two persons that lost their lives have been deposited at the Kubwa District Hospital mortuary. Their relatives have been identified and were making arrangements for their burial.

    “The rescue operation at the collapsed site came to an end with five number of persons rescued alive, three with various degrees of injuries, while two persons were unhurt and discharged from the Kubwa District Hospital,” he said.

    He commended all the stakeholders for their prompt response and cooperation, including construction companies which is line with their corporate social responsibilities mobilised and deployed all their resources to saving live.

    He also lauded the Security Agencies for their vigilance and support and t residents of the area for their cooperation during the rescue operations.

    Idriss, however, appealed to developers to always obey the building code and warned residents to desist from living in uncompleted buildings.

    Also, Mr Ikharo Attah, Senior Special Assistant on Monitoring, Inspection and Enforcement to the FCT Minister, said the owner of the property was fore-warned by concerned residents.

    “The building was initially a shopping mall, but the report we got from residents was that the owner was warned, and at a certain point, it was now being converted to a residential apartment.

    “The down was a shopping mall, but they were putting up some blocks of flat on the first and second suspended floors. You cannot alter a shopping mall and convert to a residential building thereby giving it more load that what it was meant to carry,” he said.

    Attah added that the FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Bello had ordered that tests be carried out on most of the high rise buildings around the area.

    He noted that the combined team of security agencies at the scene is currently trailing the owner of the property, who residents suggested may have absconded.

    “We have a policy in the FCTA that when a building collapses, the land is forfeited and revoked and the place is converted into a park or garden for residents around the neighbourhood,” he added.

    On his part, Umar Shuaibu, Coordinator, Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, blamed the incident on quackery and shady construction, adding that the FCTA has a policy of subjecting old buildings to integrity test.

    Water tank falls, kills 2 in Bariga

    A water tank from a scaffold fell and killed two persons at Ladi Lak, Bariga, Lagos State on Sunday night, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says.

    Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, Zonal Coordinator, South West NEMA, confirmed the incident on Monday in Lagos.

    Farinloye said that a tank scaffolding of a two-storey building collapsed on a bungalow in the next compound, resulting in the death of two males- an adult and a child, while three adult males sustained injuries.

    He said that the injured were taken to the hospital by community leaders in Bariga before the arrival of emergency responders.

    He said that the incident occurred at Adeleye Street, Ladi Lak, Bariga, a suburb of Lagos.

    Flood ravages 225 communities across Kano, Jigawa – NEMA

    The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said that flood affected 225 communities following heavy and prolonged downpours across 31 local government areas of Kano and Jigawa States from July to date.

    Dr Nuradeen Abdullahi, NEMA Territorial Coordinator, Kano/Jigawa Territorial Office, made the disclosure in a statement in Kano on Saturday.

    He said the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) on Aug.16, predicted above normal rainfall in 19 states between August and September including Kano/Jigawa, and called on the affected states to intensify mitigation, adaption and response mechanisms.

    The affected LGAs include Tudun Wada; Doguwa, Kibiya, Kiru, Gwale, Danbatta, Bagwai, Ajingi, Albasu, Shanono, Tsanyawa, Rimin Gado and Dawakin Kudu in Kano State.

    While in Jigawa, the disaster affected Kafin hausa; Malam madori, Hadejia, Guri, Auyo, Birniwa, Jahun, Miga, Kiyawa, Birnin Kudu, Kaugama, Babura, Gwaram, Dutse and Kirikasamma LGAs.

    Abdullahi said the flood destroyed many houses, infrastructure, farmlands, livestock, properties and displaced hundreds of households.

    “I urge authorities and relevant stakeholders to shift from a more reactive to proactive role and map out clearer emergency preparedness plan,” he said.

    He urged the state governments to embark on aggressive awareness campaign for possible response activities especially in high risk areas to mitigate further disaster.

    The NEMA official further advised residents to adhere to early warning signals, clear drains and canals ease flow of water.

    175 stranded Nigerians return from Libya – NEMA

    Another batch of 175 Nigerians stranded in Libya returned to the country on Tuesday.

    The Nigerians were received at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

    The South-West Zonal Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed the development to journalists in Lagos.

    Farinloye said that the stranded Nigerians were received at the Cargo Wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport at about 11:58 p.m, with Boeing 737-800 Al Buraq Air, with registration number 5A-DMG.

    He said that the returnees were brought back to the country by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) through a voluntary repatriation programme.

    Farinloye said that the returnees are 77 male adults, 64 female adults, 11 male and 12 female children, five female infants and six male infants.

    He added that the programme was designed to facilitate the return of distressed Nigerians who had left the country in search of greener pastures in various European countries back home.

    At least more than 400 Nigerians stranded in the North African country had returned home under the arrangement in the last three months.

    Farinloye enjoined the returnees to turn a new leaf in looking for ample opportunities in the country that was enough for everyone to achieve their desired goals.

    He, however, appealed to the returnees to avoid vices that they must have been exposed to from the country of departure in their homeland.

    “We advised the returnees to realise that there’s no country better than Nigeria.

    “Here you have all the freedom to achieve your potential, looking for greener pastures in foreign is no longer a reality. Those countries are not better off when you consider the challenges you encounter there and here.”

    ICYMI: Emergency responders battle fire at Mile 2 in Lagos [VIDEO]

    Emergency responders have been battling a raging fire at a mechanic village in Mile 2, near the Army Signal Barracks, in Lagos State.

    The Zonal Coordinator South-West, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr Ibrahim Farinloye confirmed the fire incident on Tuesday in Lagos.

    Farinloye said that the fire is believed to be caused by operations of a panel beater welding under a truck.

    He added that the mechanic village contained several parked trucks.

    “It is alleged to be caused by the careless operations of a panel beater welding under a truck.

    ”It was alleged that the fire outbreak was not taken seriously initially until it got out of hands,” Farinloye said.

    He said that firefighters from both the government side and privately owned were on the ground to assist in containing the fire.

    He said that emergency responders on the ground included the Nigeria Ports Authority NPA, Federal Fire Service, LASEMA Response Unit (LRU) and the Lagos State Fire Service.

    According to him, others are firefighters from Julius Berger Plc, United Bank for Africa Plc and the Nigerian Army.

    He said that there was no life lost to the inferno.

    Mile 2 fire incident: No casualty recorded – Lagos Fire Service

    Meanwhile, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has said no casualty was recorded in the Mile 2 fire incident.

    TNG reports Ogabi Olajide, Deputy Head, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service made this known in a statement while describing the incident as avoidable.

    The statement reads: “The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is presently combating intense Fire at an articulated Motor Park, Otto Wharf, Mile 2, Lagos which resulted from a diesel tanker that exploded and resulted in inferno. The report which was alerted at 15:44hrs.

    “Tuesday saw three Fire Crews of d Agency raised to douse d Fire with copious Chemical Foam Compound with a mixture of Water. Preliminary investigation reveals that d avoidable disaster stem from weildering works on the diesel tanker resulting into explosion and ensued in Fire

    “The Fire which involved quite numbers of Tankers, Peddler Trucks, various sizes of storage Tanks and Drums all stocks in AGO. The Public is hereby assured that the situation is under control as the spread of the Fire has been caught and poses no further threat. There is no record of casualty thus far. Further details will be updated as situation demands”.

    Flooding: Seven persons die in Lagos – NEMA

    The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that seven persons lost their lives in the flooding that happened over the weekend in Lagos state.

    This announcement was made by the South West coordinator of the NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye, on Wednesday in Lagos.

    He listed communities that got hit the most to be  Oke Isagun, Agbado Oke, Oko LCDA, all in Alimosho LGA.

    “The rainfall of Friday, 8th July and Saturday, 9th July, 2022 has revealed that about seven people – three children of the same parent and four adults – died.”, Farinloye said.

    Emergency responders, however, eight people during the two-day continuous rainfall.

    The three siblings were residing at a church belonging to Mercy of Christ Apostolic Church, situated in an uncompleted building.

    Michael, 18; Elizabeth, 17 years and Timi, 14, were swept away while trying to relocate from their room to the main church structure.

    Timi, said to be asthmatic, slipped while trying to climb the plank linking their room to the church building.

    The coordinator added that the remaining two, while trying to rescue their sibling, were also swept away by the flood.

    “The bereaved parents were said to be somewhere, but the NEMA team had a brief meeting with the community leaders on the way forward”, the statement added.

    They informed NEMA that in the same community, four siblings were also swept away on the same day but were rescued.

    National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said that the flooding that occurred in Lagos last weekend claimed seven lives.

    Zonal Coordinator, South West, NEMA, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, made the disclosure in a statement issued in Lagos on Wednesday.

    “The post-emergency phase assessment after the unprecedented rainfall of Friday, 8th July and Saturday, 9th July, 2022 has revealed that about seven people – three children of same parent and four adults – died.

    “About eight lives were also saved during the period, as a result of the flooding that was witnessed during the two-day continuous rainfall,” he said.

    Farinloye further stated that the three siblings who lost their lives were residing at a church building belonging to Mercy of Christ Apostolic Church, situated in an uncompleted building.

    He said that the siblings, Michael, 18; Elizabeth, 17 years and Timi, 14, were swept away while trying to relocate from their room to the main church structure.

    He said that the youngest child, Tmi, who was said to be asthmatic, while trying to climb the plank linking their room to the church building, slipped and was overpowered by the flood.

    The coordinator added that the remaining two, while trying to rescue their sibling, were also swept away by the flood.

    Farinloye said that the NEMA team, while on a condolence visit to the families, met with representatives of Progressive Community Development Area, who conducted the agency round the affected communities.

    “The bereaved parents were said to be somewhere, but the NEMA team had a brief meeting with the community leaders on the way forward.

    “An appeal was made to them that for the rest of the year, the community must embark on awareness and sensitisation on safe actions, to avoid the situation that they experienced during the period.

    “The community leaders also informed NEMA that in the same community, four siblings were also swept away on the same day, but that the community members rallied round and rescued all of them,” Farinloye said.

    He listed the flooded communities as: Oke Isagun, Agbado Oke, Oko LCDA, all in Alimosho LGA.

    The NEMA chief said that members of the Progressive CDA briefed NEMA that rainwater from Meiran, Abbatoir, Alagbado, Agege and Toll gate converged in their community.

    Farinloye also gave an update on the flood at Oyatoki in Orile Agege, saying that two people died, while four were rescued.

    Over 100 shops burnt in Bodija fire incident – NEMA

    The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has put the total number of burnt shops at Bodija market in Ibadan the Oyo state capital at 100.

    Recall that the Bodija market was engulfed in fire on Monday with many shops and properties completely burnt down on Monday morning.

    The cause of the fire incident has not been ascertained as of the time of filing this report.

    But, NEMA in its reaction, said that about 100 shops were razed, adding that over 350 traders were affected.

    NEMA Southwest Zonal office in a statement made available to newsmen also disclosed that foodstuffs and other valuable items worth millions of naira were destroyed.

    NEMA said that it and other stakeholders were informed and they quickly went to the scene of the incident to rescue the situation.

    “NEMA received a distress call early hours of this morning of the fire outbreak at a section of Bodija Market in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. Immediately, the Zonal office activated and mobilized the Federal and State fire services to bring the situation under control.

    “Over 350 traders were affected, while shops close to 100 were razed down by the fire. Foodstuffs and other valuable items worth millions of naira were destroyed,” it said.

    The Bodija market is located within the Aare Latosa Local Council Development Area (LCDA) which was carved out of the Ibadan North Local Government Area.

    Lagos boat mishap: 13 more bodies recovered as rescue operation ends

    The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says that 13 more bodies have been recovered from the ill-fated boat sailing from Mile 2 to Ibeshe, a suburb of Lagos, on Saturday.

    The Zone Coordinator, South-West, NEMA, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, made the disclosure in a statement on Sunday in Lagos.

    Farinloye said that a total of 17 bodies had been recovered so far from the recovery operations of the missing victims.

    “Late yesterday night, two more bodies were recovered in addition to the two earlier recovered in the morning.

    “With this, it has become a total of 17 bodies recovered,” he said.

    Farinloye revealed that search and rescue operations had ended.

    The coordinator said that illegal boat operators plying the waterways beyond the stipulated official hours led to these avoidable deaths.

    He said that the act was a gross violation of the regulations of the waterways guidelines for operators.

    “It was revealed that the regulatory bodies have tried to stamp out illegal operations of small boat operators who hardly use life jackets after official hours.

    “But they do not heed to regulations put in place to stop them.

    “It was also observed that wooden boats are not permitted to be used as passenger boat.

    “But it is only at this odd hour that illegal operators always put the lives of unsuspecting passengers at risk,’’ Farinloye said.

    He said that efforts were on to address the gaps with all stakeholders such as the Nigerian Navy’s Special Boat Service, the Association of Boat/Ferry Operators of Nigeria and the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), among others.
