    Collapsed building: Responders rescue 5 alive, picks 4 dead bodies

    The total number of people rescued alive in the building which collapsed in the Onike area of Lagos on Saturday is now five, while four dead bodies were recovered.

    The Zonal Coordinator Southwest, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed the development to newsmen in the early hours of Sunday.

    Farinloye said that further investigation from the incident showed that the collapsed building under construction was located within a compound and it was a frame structure as at the time of the incident.

    He said that the third suspended slab concrete was already in place with ongoing internal partition.

    “The building crumbled during a downpour at about 1:45 p.m. Saturday.

    “The building was bequeathed to the family members and some of the family members awarded it to a developer who was converting the bungalow building into a three-storey building before it collapsed,” Farinloye said.

    According to the NEMA boss, Alayaki Lane where the building is located, contains a cluster of buildings and the rescue operation is being hampered by the lack of space.

    He, however, assured the people that the emergency responders were working hard to get to ground zero.

    He said for now no one had claimed that a relation was missing.

    Apart from NEMA, other agencies participating in the operations include LASEMA, Federal and State Fire Services, NSCDC, the police and the Nigeria Red Cross.

    The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Saturday confirmed the rescue of one person, and the recovery of one dead person in a two-storey building that collapsed at Freeman Road, Lagos Island.

    The Zonal Coordinator of Southwest NEMA, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, told newsmen that the building under construction collapsed during torrential rainfall.

    The emergency responders were on their way to the scene of the incident at the time of filing the report.

    The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed nine persons died and 10 others injured in a gas explosion that occurred early morning at Aba Road, Sabon Gari, Kano State.

    The NEMA Kano Territorial Coordinator, Dr Nuradeen Abdullahi, confirmed the development to newsmen while giving an update on gas cylinder explosion in Kano on Tuesday evening.

    “The death toll in the gas explosion which occurred at Aba Road in Sabon Gari of Fagge Local Government Area, Kano, has increased to nine.

    “Nine dead bodies were recovered from a collapsed building affected by the explosion and have been deposited at the mortuary at Armed Forces Specialist Hospital, Kano.

    “Ten persons injured and were taken to various hospitals out of which two have been discharged,” he said.
    He noted that the Director-General of NEMA, Mr Mustapha Habib, was at the scene of the incident.

    “The Director-General NEMA led the rescue team and escavators were mobilised to ensure removal of trapped victims.

    “NEMA rescue team were at the site of the incident to investigate and ascertain the impact of the explosion.”

    Abdullahi added that the rescue operation, which started at about 10 a.m and officially closed at about 5:15 p.m, was well coordinated.

    He therefore called on the general public, particularly those living in the affected area, to remain calm and warned against spreading fake news.

    It has become very clear that Tuesday’s incident in the Sabon Gari area of Kano State was not a case of a suicide bombing but a case of a gas explosion.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) also clarifies that the explosion did not occur at a school as earlier reported but that the incident happened near an animal feed store opposite the school on Aba Road, Sabon Gari, Kano.

    Recall that in the early hours of Tuesday, there was pandemonium in the Sabon Gari area of Kano. Earlier reports had it that it was a bomb explosion, but official reports have said it is a gas explosion.

    TNG reports the police command in the state had confirmed the killing of four persons following the incident.

    Meanwhile, the Kano State government has in a statement by Mr Muhammed Garba, the State’s Commissioner for Information called on residents to remain calm.

    Garba said that the situation has been brought under control, as security agencies had taken over the area for rescue operations and investigation.

    “The state government will keep the public abreast on any development,” he said.

    Garba cautioned residents against fake news and speculations on the incident.

    He also faulted the claim that the explosion occurred in a school, saying that it happened near an animal feed store opposite the school on Aba Road, Sabon Gari, Kano.

    He said that while the cause of the explosion and the damages were yet to be ascertained, an investigation has commenced.

    He urged residents, especially those living in the area to remain calm, saying that the government was working to restore normalcy in collaboration with relevant security agencies.

    Meanwhile, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has disclosed that about 9 bodies have been recovered so far from the gas explosion.

    A statement by NEMA’s spokesperson, Manzo Ezekiel revealed that the Director-General of NEMA, Mustapha Ahmed was at the site of the incident and coordinated rescue operations.

    The agency, however, confirmed that it was not a case of a bomb explosion but a case of a gas explosion.

    The statement reads: “9 dead bodies have been recovered so far from the rubbles of a collapsed building beside a primary school following explosions from a gas cylinder at Aba Road in Sabon Gari area of Kano.

    “Director-General National Emergency Management Agency, Mustapha Habib Ahmed, was at the site of the incident and coordinated the rescue operations. He mobilised excavators being used for the rescue operations and said NEMA team will ensure complete removal of the rubbles to retrieve all trapped persons.

    “Furthermore, the DG instructed the NEMA rescue team to remain at the site until conclusion of the rescue and to work together with security agencies and other response organisations present at the location.

    “NEMA is presently coordinating the rescue operations involving members, Nigerian Red Cross, military, the Nigerian Police, Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, Kano SEMA.”

    The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Monday said that the death toll at the collapsed three-storey building in the Ebute Metta area has increased to 10.

    Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, the Zonal Coordinator, South-West, NEMA, confirmed the development in Lagos.

    “Two additional bodies including a four-year-old boy and a female youth corps member recovered, making 10 deaths.

    “The number of rescued occupants remains 23, while six males and four females have been so far recovered dead,” Farinloye said.

    Recall that a three-storey building collapsed on Sunday at about 10.56 p.m. on 24 Ibadan Street, Herbert Macaulay Way, Ebute Meta, Lagos.

    However, rescue operations are still ongoing at the site of the incident in search of occupants trapped under the rubble.

    The National Emergency Management Agency has confirmed the recovery of two dead bodies and rescue of 23 persons from a three-storey building that collapsed in Ebute Metta, Lagos.

    The Zonal Coordinator Southwest, NEMA, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, who disclosed on Monday in Lagos, said the recovered bodies were those of a mother and her child, while the rescued persons included seven children and 16 adults.

    “Nine of those rescued alive have been treated and discharged. They returned to the scene, but have been taken away for proper custody while psycho-social and post-trauma counselling is being arranged for them by the Nigerian Red Cross,” Farinloye said.

    The three-Storey building collapsed at 24 Ibadan Str, Herbert Macaulay Way, Onyigbo on Sunday at about 10.56 p.m. However, rescue operations were still ongoing at the site.

    Death toll in Imo explosion rise to 110 — NEMA

    The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has disclosed that the death toll in Sunday’s illegal refinery explosion in Abaeze community Ohaji/Egbema Local Government of Imo had risen to 110.

    The acting Head of Imo/Abia Operations Office of the agency, Mr Ifeanyi Nnaji, disclosed this to the newsmen on Monday.

    Nnaji said more dead bodies were recovered in Orashi River, near the scene of the incident on Sunday, while some died at various hospitals to increase the total casualty figure so far.

    Newsmen reports that an illegal refinery situated at the Abaeze forest in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government exploded on Saturday and killed no fewer than 100 people.

    Emergency workers in Imo led by Nnaji had been on the ground since the incident to carry out rescue operations and evacuate dead bodies.

    The NEMA boss further disclosed to newsmen that arrangements were on to carry out the mass burial of the corpses.

    When asked the cause of the disaster, Nnaji said “we are yet to ascertain what led to the fire disaster.

    “Those who should tell the story and give insight to the incident are all dead, we are still on the ground, and we will soon come out with a report on the incident”, he said.

    Nnaji further appealed to the government to create the enabling environment for genuine business to flourish within the oil-producing communities in Imo, to discourage youths from engaging in illegal activities.

    He also appealed to oil companies in the area to assist the government in job creation for their host communities.

    NEMA donates medical equipment, food to cholera victims in Taraba

    The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has donated medical equipment and food items to victims of 2021 Cholera outbreak in Gassol Local Government Area of the state.

    Mr Mustafa Habib, Director General of NEMA, while flagging off the distribution of the items in Mutun Biyu on Monday, said the government had found it necessary to bring succour to the victims of cholera outbreak in the community.

    Habib, represented by Mr Ladan Ayuba, Head of Operations NEMA, Adamawa-Taraba Office, said both the drugs and other medical consumables would be distributed to the primary healthcare centres in the area.

    He said the agency had approved the demand by Sen. Yusuf Yusuf, representing Taraba Central Senatorial District, for the intervention in the supply of both medical equipment and food items to 900 victims of 2021 cholera outbreak in the area.

    The director-general said 250 households were to benefit from the food items, and that the medical equipment would further boost healthcare delivery in the area.

    He advised beneficiaries of the food items not to sell their relief materials to traders.

    Habib also advised residents to be conscious of environmental hygiene to prevent further outbreaks of cholera and other infectious diseases.

    One of the beneficiaries, Ms Blessing Danasabe, thanked the Federal Government for the provision of both medical equipment and food items.

    Danasabe also commended Yusuf for ensuring that the affected communities benefited from such a gesture.

    Another beneficiary, Mr Isa Abubakar, thanked both the senator and NEMA for ensuring delivery of the items.

    He said the materials would go a long way in reducing the hardship caused as a result of the cholera outbreak as well as improving medical care within affected communities.

    Newsmen reports that the distribution, which was peaceful, was witnessed by officials of Taraba State Emergency Management Agency (TSEMA).

    Another batch of 129 returnees arrive Nigeria from Libya

    129 stranded Nigerians have returned from Libya, the returnees arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, In Lagos on Friday morning.

    They were received by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) upon arrival at the Murtala Muhammed Airpot Friday morning

    The Director-General of NEMA, Alh Mustapha Ahmed, represented by the Acting Coordinator of the Lagos Territorial office of the Agency Ibrahim Farinloye confirmed the development.

    Farinloye said that the stranded Nigerians arrived at the Cargo Wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport at about 2.09 a.m. with Boeing 737-800 Al Buraq Air, with registration number 5A-DMG.

    He confirmed that the returnees were brought back to the country by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

    IOM is a voluntary repatriation programme designed for the distressed who left the country for greener pastures in various African and Europeans countries but find it difficult to sustain their stay in those countries.

    Farinloye said that the returnees included 27 male adults, 74 female adults, four male and seven female children, six female infants and 11 male infants, including three males with mental health-related issues.

    “We admonish the returnees on the need to realize that there’s no country better than Nigeria.

    “Here you have all the freedom to achieve your potentials, looking for greener pastures in foreign countries is no longer a reality, those countries are not better off when you consider the challenges you encounter there and here.

    “You are encouraged to be positive ambassadors toward advocacy and sensitization against irregular migration that leave the youths vulnerable to all sorts of abuses and death in extreme cases.

    “Many are permanently disabled from traumatized torture, resulting in serious mental health challenges,” he said.

    Fire guts building as PMS tanker explodes in Lagos

    A three-storey building in Mushin area of Lagos State was on Wednesday gutted by fire following the explosion of a tanker discharging Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) at a nearby petrol station.

    Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, Acting Zonal Coordinator, South West Zonal Office,
    National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), confirmed the development in a statement issued in Lagos.

    Farinloye said the explosion, which occured at a Mobil Petrol Station about 1p.m , gutted the residential building located at No. 71, Agege Motor Road, Alakara, Mushin, Lagos.

    He said: “No life was lost and no one was injured. Containment of the fire has been very successful

    “Efforts are ongoing to salvage the three- storey building from being totally consumed.

    “The few items that were saved have been deposited at the Alakara Police Station which is opposite the building.”

    According to him, the Mobil Filling Station has been sealed-off by the Lagos State Safety Commission.

    Farinloye said: “Presently, out of the 33,000 litres of four compartments, the explosion started while only one compartment was being discharged.

    “With total control of the fire, the remaining three compartments are being discharged to ensure the safety of the community.”

    He noted that though the cause of the explosion is yet to be ascertained, it was a reminder on the need for Nigerians to be very careful in handling of gasoline.

    Farinloye said this was especially due to the current dry season and excessive heat when little pressure could lead to a fire outbreak.

    He said the agencies on ground at the scene were NEMA, Federal and State Fire Services, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, and the Disaster Management Unit of the Lagos State Police Command.

    Farinloye said also on ground were officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
