    Fire wreaks havoc in Lagos; 4 buildings collapse, 14 others seriously impacted

    A total of four buildings have collapsed due to the intensity of the fire that engulfed part of Dosunmu Market on Lagos Island on Tuesday.

    Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, Lagos Territorial Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), disclosed that 14 other buildings were seriously impacted by the inferno.

    Farinloye said the cause of the fire, according to sources, could be attributed to the refueling of a running generator at the market, which resulted to fire that could not be contained.

    Emergency responders at the scene of the event included NEMA, Federal and State Fire Services, the Nigeria Police and fire service of the Nigeria Ports Authority.

    President Tinubu appoints new NEMA DG

    President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Mrs Zubaida Umar as the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

    This is contained in a statement by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, on Friday in Abuja.

    Ngelale said the new Director-General of NEMA had over 20 years of work experience in diverse fields, including Human Resources and Finance and Administration.

    According to him, she is a member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers and the Institute of Credit Administration.

    As Executive Director, Finance and Corporate Services at the Federal Mortgage Bank, Umar drove the strategy and repositioning of the bank into a modern, digitised mortgage and financial service provider.

    “The President expects that the new Director-General will bring the much-needed financial and operational discipline and refashion the agency into a performance-driven and proactive emergency response provider with a focus on prevention and climate change readiness,” he said.

    We need military support to safeguard warehouses in Kaduna – NEMA

    The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has solicited the military`s support to forestall any security breach at its facilities in Kaduna.

    Mr Imam Garki, NEMA North West Zonal Coordinator, stated this during a visit to the Commanding Officer of 2 Battalion Nigerian Army, on Tuesday in Kaduna.

    He said that the visit was to strengthen security at various warehouses, following the recent incident where hoodlums attacked government facilities to cart away food items and other valuables.

    “We are here to solicit for military support to have a standby security personnel position to safeguard the agency’s warehouse facilities,“ he said.

    Garki was represented by Abdulkadir Mohammed, Head of Unit, Search and Rescue of the agency.

    He said the agency has an existing working relationship with the Nigerian Army, who serves as one among the Disaster Response Units (DRUs) of the agency.

    Responding, Lt.-Col. Abdulqadir Abdullahi, Commanding Officer 2 Battalion Nigerian Army, assured the agency of the Army`s relentless cooperation to deal with the current situation.

    The Director-General, Mr Mustapha Ahmed, directed Zonal Directors and Heads of Operations, to strengthen security in and around NEMA offices and warehouses nationwide.

    NEMA speaks on looted warehouse in Abuja

    The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has debunked reports circulating in some quarters that its warehouse was looted by some hoodlums in Abuja on Sunday.

    NEMA spokesperson, Manzo Ezekiel, in a statement on Sunday, confirmed that the looted warehouse is not affiliated with the agency, but sympathised with the owners of the looted facility.

    On Sunday, some residents of Abuja raided a warehouse belonging to the Federal Capital Territory’s Department of Agriculture, looting foodstuffs and other items stored in the facility.

    The FCT Agric secretariat’s Public Relations Officer, Zakari Aliyu, confirmed to a national tv via text message that the looted warehouse belonged to their agency.

    He, however, did not disclose further details on the looted warehouse.

    NEMA said it has taken measures to safeguard its facilities nationwide.

    “To forestall any security breach at NEMA facilities, the Director General Mustapha Habib Ahmed has directed Zonal Directors and Heads of Operations to strengthen security in and around the Agency’s offices and warehouses nationwide,” NEMA said.

    The hardship in Nigeria has taken a new twist in Nigeria as some residents of the Federal Capital Territory on Sunday looted a warehouse reportedly belonging to the National Emergency Management Agency of Nigeria over the current economic hardship across the country.

    TNG monitored reports revealed that the warehouse, which is situated in the Phase 3 Region of the FCT area of Abuja, was looked my may residents of the area.

    While confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the FCT command, Josephine Adeh, said via a text message that, “The situation is now under control.”

    TNG reports as at the time of filing this report the quantity of looted foodstuffs cannot be ascertained.

    NEMA breaks silence on impact of Mandilas building fire

    The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that about 6,700 traders, 450 shops, 30 offices and five restaurants were impacted by the fire that engulfed Mandilas building on Sunday in Lagos.

    This is contained in a post disaster assessment issued by the Coordinator, NEMA Territorial Office, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, on Monday in Lagos.

    Farinloye said the figures were released by Alhaja Adeniji Rashidat, the Iya Oja of Atunwase International Market, during her briefing to the assessors.

    In view of the development, Farinloye urged Nigerians to be safety conscious while carrying out their daily activities.

    Farinloye said the fire which started at about 00:11 hours, began on the first floor where an alleged electric welding activity was going on.

    “It was alleged that the people around did not notice the fire until it was too late before the fire service was contacted.

    “The fire, also, spread to surrounding market stalls at Atunwase International Market with equal extensive damages as the main complex,” Farinloye said.

    He noted that officials of the Lagos State Safety Commission and Building Control Agency were on the ground to assess the integrity of all the buildings at the scene.

    “However, all structures have been locked down to prevent access to the shop for the safety of traders and the general public,” Farinloye said.

    He listed other agencies on the ground as the Lagos State Building Control Agency, the Lagos Fire and Rescue Service, Red Cross, Police and the Neighbourhood Watch.

    Farinloye added that the Lagos Island Local Government Sanitation and the Lagos State Central Business District officers were currently making efforts at making the scene safer for people.

    Two dead as two-storey building collapses in Lagos

    Two aged persons a man and a woman have lost their lives when a two-storey building  collapsed on Friday morning in Ebute Meta, Lagos.

    Emergency responders immediately visited the scene to render help and recover the bodies of the two killed in the rubbles.

    Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, Lagos Territorial Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), confirmed the development to Newsmen on Friday.

    Farinloye said that a two-storey building with a pent house collapsed at about 0930 hours along Herbert Marculley way, Ebute Metta.

    He said that the Lagos Building Control Agency (LASBCA) had issued evacuation notice several times and all the original occupants had parked out.

    “It was alleged that the property had been sold out about four months ago.

    “Three of the occupants jumped to safety with the assistance of the residents,” Farinloye said.

    He added that search and rescue operations was ongoing.

    Kaduna Army air strike: 85 killed, 66 injured– NEMA

    Eighty-five people were killed in an air strike by the Nigerian Army at Tudun Biri village in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, in one of the country’s deadliest military bombing accidents.

    The North-West zonal spokesman of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Halima Suleiman, told Channels Television that 66 other victims were also injured in Sunday’s bombing.

    According to her, fatality figure was gotten from the local authorities after the burial of the victims on Monday.

    “The Northwest Zonal Office has received details from the local authorities that 85 dead bodies have so far been buried while a search is still ongoing,” NEMA said.

    However, emergency officials were still negotiating with community leaders to calm tensions to be able to reach the village.

    President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday ordered an investigation after the army acknowledged one of its drones accidentally struck Tudun Biri village as residents were celebrating a Muslim festitival

    The army did not give any casualty figures, but residents had said 85 people, many of them women and children, had been killed in the incident.

    “President Tinubu describes the incident as very unfortunate, disturbing, and painful, expressing indignation and grief over the tragic loss of Nigerian lives,” the presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale said in a statement.

    80-year-old woman dies in Oyingbo building collapse

    Oyingbo building collapse has claimed the life of an 80-year-old woman and displaced seven families on Thursday.

    The Territorial Coordinator, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed the development to NAN in Lagos.

    Farinloye said the building had shown signs of distress for a very long time and finally collapsed partially on Thursday morning.

    He said two households were fortunate to escape from the building shortly before the incident occurred at about 7.45 a.m.

    “It was reported that the two storey building located at No 34, Oloto Street, off Borno way, Ebute Metta, Lagos Mainland Local Government Area with GPS coordinates: N6°28’42.09 – E3°23’11.09 had been showing signs of distressed earlier.

    “In order to prevent further threats to the residents of the neighbourhood, the officials of Lagos State Building Control Agency has commenced immediate and tactical demolitions of the remaining parts of the building,” Farinloye said.

    NEMA raises alarm, lists 9 States to experience massive flood

    The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has alerted Nigerians to expect floods in nine States as Cameroon began the release of water from its Lagdo Dam.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the nine States are Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Anambra, Edo, Delta and Bayelsa.

    Mr Mustapha Ahmed, Director General, NEMA, disclosed this on Saturday in Abuja when he briefed newsmen on the release of water from the dam.

    He said that the nine affected States which had communities along the banks of River Benue may be affected by the water release, which is expected to last till the end of October.

    Ahmed said that the recent release had led to the displacement of communities and could lead to further destruction of crops and other infrastructure.

    “NEMA has been alerted on sudden increased inundation of riverine communities and farmlands along the banks of River Niger in Adamawa, Taraba and Benue states in the past 48 hours.

    “The sudden situation is attributed to the rapid release of water from Lagdo fam in the Republic of Cameroon and has resulted in the displacement of several inhabitants of the affected communities.

    “Furthermore, crops, lands and valuable infrastructure are at risk of getting washed away by the flood waters.

    “Situation reports from Adamawa State confirmed the upsurge of flood waters along the flood plains of River Benue.

    “The situation is expected to be replicated in downstream states of Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Anambra, Edo, Delta and Bayelsa as the River Benue joins River Niger and flows to the Atlantic Ocean through the Niger Delta,” he said.

    The director general also cautioned states and local government areas along the River Niger and Benue Basins to immediately activate their emergency response plans to avert potential damage and losses that could arise due to the flooding of communities.

    Ahmed added that, so far, 159,157 persons had been affected by this year’s flooding, as 28 persons had lost their lives and 48,168 individuals displaced in 13 states across the country.

    He, however, added that the agency would continue to provide further updates as it received more situation reports from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) as well as frontline states’ emergency management agencies.
