Shoprite staff suspended for lateness to work allegedly commits suicide on New Year Eve

A staff of Shoprite in Akure, Ondo State identified as Jumoke Kehinde has reportedly committed suicide after being suspended for reporting late to work.

Kehinde was said to have been found dead on New Year’s eve at her apartment in the Kajola area along Oda-road, Akure.

A co-staff to the deceased at Shoprite who pleaded anonymity said late Kehinde reported late for work and was ordered suspended.

According to the staff, “It is normal that anyone who comes late should wait outside before they are allowed in and be given a suspension.

“She was seen arranging her table getting ready for the day’s sales as she looked happy but later left the mall at about 11 am after receiving the suspension letter.

“At about 4 pm, a distress call was received in the office that she was not feeling fine. One of the management staff went to check on her. Kehinde was found on the floor of her room shaking while her body was oozing with odour of the poison she took. Although, no empty can was found anywhere as she was rushed to the hospital.

“After some time at the hospital, she was declared dead. One of her relatives said she did not show any sign of depression.

“She was given a suspension for coming late that day. She was told to go home. After then she went back home.

“We all know that when you come late you will be given a suspension for a few days without payment.

“I don’t see any reason why such an issue would cause her to kill herself by committing suicide.”

Ondo Police spokesman, ASP Tee-Leo Ikoro, could not be reached for comments but police sources said her body has been deposited in a morgue while investigation has commenced unraveling what led to her suicide.

  • Bandits invade Niger community on New Year’s Eve, kill seven farmers

Bandits invade Niger community on New Year’s Eve, kill seven farmers

It was a bloody New Year’s Eve in Baban Rami, Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State after bandits invaded the community and killed seven farmers.

The Secretary to the State Government, Ahmed Matane on Saturday confirmed the killings saying the incident occurred on New Year’s Eve.

He said the bandits had laid ambush on the farmers who had gone to their farms to harvest their produce.

According to him, the bandits had earlier demanded ransom from the farmers before they could harvest their produce.

But the farmers refused to give in to their threats and decided to seek for the protection of some vigilante members.

Matane explained that after the harvest, one of the drivers, however, decided to move ahead with some farmers, and in the process were attacked by the bandits who killed seven of them.

Asked why the information was just coming to public domain, the Niger state SSG said government had wanted to be sure of the numbers before making any pronouncement.

“We were not sure of the number of the persons killed. We wanted to be sure. So, we just got the accurate figure,” he said.

It is the first time that bandits would launch attacks on Baban Rami.

Matane said the state government would set up a coordinated operation in Mashegu to dislodge the bandits.

He said the state government condemned the attack and other attacks recently carried out in the state.

At least over fifty people have been killed by bandits in Niger State since renewed banditry attacks in January, 2020.

The latest attack comes barely one week after the district head of Madaka in Rafi Local Government Area of the state, Ya’u Idris was killed by gunmen days after he was abducted from his home by the same people.

At the moment, many farmers are not able to go to their farms to harvest their produce due to insecurity.

  • Pope apologizes for slapping woman on New Year’s Eve

Pope apologizes for slapping woman on New Year’s Eve

Pope Francis apologised Wednesday for his widely-viewed slap of a woman who had grabbed his hand as he greeted Catholic faithful on New Year’s Eve.

The image of Francis slapping his way free from the clutches of the admirer was an instant hit on social media.

    A personal apology followed.

“We lose patience many times,” Francis confessed.

“It happens to me too. I apologise for the bad example given yesterday,” the head of the Catholic church said before celebrating Mass at the Vatican.

Twitter enthusiasts commented with abandon on the pontiff’s prompt riposte to the woman.

Francis had greeted children before the Nativity scene on Saint Peter’s square and was turning away when the woman who had crossed herself then cried out something, pulled on his hand and almost caused him to fall.

The 83-year-old pope grimaced before managing to break free by slapping her hand twice.

He continued his tour, walking with some difficulty while maintaining a slightly greater distance from visitors, and gradually relaxed again as he came into contact with other children.

Twitter comments were mostly supportive of the pontiff’s instinctive reaction.

“HE IS HUMAN.. Been (sic) a Pope doesn’t make you immune to Pain or avoid Reaction to pain,” one typical comment read.

In his first Mass of the New Year, the pontiff later denounced “all violence against women” as “a profanation of God, born of a woman.”

Francis also said women were “the source of life” but deplored that they were constantly “offended, beaten, abused and forced into prostitution” and forced to “supress the life they carry within” them.

He emphasised that the “rebirth of humanity began with a woman,” and bemoaned that women’s bodies were “sacrificed on the profane altars of advertising, profit, pornography.”
