    EPL: Newcastle eye Romelu Lukaku

Belgium forward, Romelu Lukaku, who is currently on loan at Roma from Inter Milan could be set for a shock move to English Premier League side,  Newcastle United.

The Belgian striker has been in fine form for the Serie A side, scoring nine goals in 15 appearances so far this season.

Insinuations are rife that the Belgian forward could secure a move to Chelsea’s rivals Newcastle in January on a permanent deal.

The Magpies see Lukaku as an ideal addition to bolster their attacking options providing competition for Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson.

However, Lukaku, who is still a Chelsea player and has also played for Manchester United, is reportedly hesitant about returning to England.

Lukaka fell out with Inter Milan after reaching last season’s UEFA Champions League final where they lost to Manchester City.

EPL: Newcastle United Manager, Eddie Howe speaks on Gordon’s goal against Arsenal

Newcastle United manager, Eddie Howe, has finally given his thoughts over Anthony Gordon’s controversial winner against Arsenal in Saturday’s Premier League tie.

Recall that Newcastle defeated Arsenal 1-0 at home in a Premier League fixture St James’ Park.

Arsenal coach, Mikel Arteta slammed VAR officials for for award a goal to Newcastle when it appeared the ball already went out of touch.

Arteta said the decision to award the goal to Newcastle by VAR officials is a disgrace and an embarrassment.

VAR officials took more than four minutes to make the decision, running checks on three possible offences.

Those included if Newcastle winger Gordon was offside, if the ball had gone out of play during the build-up to Gordon’s goal and if Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes was fouled by Joelinton.

Asked for his thoughts on Newcastle’s goal, Howe told Sky Sports after the game: “We are in the dark, we are stood by the side of the pitch seeing VAR on the screen but with no pictures.

“I have not seen anything other than what I saw at the time. It looked a good goal to me.”

Newcastle responded well and were causing plenty of problems until City substitute Bernardo Silva slotted home to put the game out of their reach midway through the second half.

EPL: Guardiola warns Arsenal, names two other teams that can still win title

Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola, has warned league leaders Arsenal on the title aspirations of two other teams in the current season.

The Spaniard said at least four teams are in the Premier League title race this season.

The Manchester City gaffer, listed neighbours Manchester United and Newcastle United as teams that can still lay their hands on the trophy.

Manchester city  will square up against  Arsenal on Wednesady night(Today) in what seems like a league leaders clash.

Arsenal and City are separated by only three points ahead of the keenly anticipated clash.

Both teams are threatening to pull away from the rest of the chasing pack, with Manchester United already five points behind the Gunners having played two games more.

Newcastle United occupy the final Champions League spot but the Magpies have drawn four of their last five matches to slip 10 points behind the Premier League leaders.

Despite this, Guardiola still believes United and Newcastle as title contenders.

When asked if he considers the two teams as title rivals, Guardiola said: “We don’t know what can happen in the next weeks.

“I always have the feeling, especially now with European competitions back and FA Cup around the corner, the last eight to ten games are going to decide the title.”

He was banned after offences linked to parking and speeding raps last year.

Three Chelsea players Conor Gallagher, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Hakim Ziyech could be on their way to Newcastle United in the January transfer window.

The Magpies gaffer, is looking to acquire  two midfielders befroe the Janauary transfer window closes and two Chekses players  Gallagher and Loftus-Cheek most favoured.

Gallagher, who has started eight out of Chelsea’s 19 Premier League games this season, is admired on Tyneside along with Loftus-Cheek, who is a long-term target of Newcastle’s head of recruitment Steve Nickson.

While Chelsea manager Graham Potter would be reluctant to let the midfield duo leave Stamford Bridge, the report added that the club are prepared to sell Ziyech this month, which could boost Newcastle’s efforts to sign the Morocco international.

  • Havertz scores late as Chelsea defeat Newcastle United

Havertz scores late as Chelsea defeat Newcastle United

Chelsea Midfielder, Kai Havertz, on Sunday scored a sensational late winner to register 3 points for the Blues against Newcastle United, after avoiding a red card for a nasty aerial challenge on Dan Burn on an emotional day at Stamford Bridge.

Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea boss, will no doubt remain confident in his side’s ability to earn three points as they look to extend their six-point lead over Manchester United in a bid to secure Champions League qualification as quickly as possible.

The match occurred amidst the backdrop of the license the Blues must adhere to since Roman Abramovich was sanctioned.

As things stand, it will be the last sell-out match of the season in SW6.

    SUPPORTERS OUTSIDE STAMFORD BRIDGE

Outside Stamford Bridge supporters were met by a row of cameras and microphones, an open invitation to offer their opinions on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“We all feel bad for the Ukrainian people, of course, we do, but why should we have to suffer when it’s nothing to do with us?” said one man old enough to have been around when Chelsea teetered closer to the brink of existence several decades ago.

Another stood at the Britannia Gate holding an A4 piece of paper that read: “Don’t use Chelsea for your bull**** politics. Forever Chelsea.”

At this stage, it is also worth pointing out that Abramovich has always vehemently denied any association with Vladimir Putin.

“He’s not involved in politics,” a Chelsea spokesman said.

No one seriously wants to see a 117-year-old club, the reigning European champions, destroyed.

Opposition fans may whip up such sentiments but the reality is the government has already provided leeway by simply providing a special license to operate that has already been loosened.

They did not have to but for obvious reasons, it is in the government’s interest to keep Chelsea alive.

  • Mourinho blames Newcastle goalkeeper for Tottenham’s draw

Mourinho blames Newcastle goalkeeper for Tottenham’s draw

Tottenham failed to win their third match of the season against Newcastle after Callum Wilson snatched a late point for the visitors from the penalty spot.

However, Jose Mourinho said his team played very well but failed to win because of Newcastle’s goalkeeper’s exceptional performance.

He said the match ought to have ended three or four-nil but Darlow’s fantastic performance denied them the win.

“I think about my team’s performance – very good, very good especially in the first half. It should have been three or four-nil but Darlow was fantastic. I think Newcastle did their job as best they could – I think at half-time Steve Bruce was happy to be only 1-0 down, he knows football and they got their point, he said.

Tottenham got their lead in the match in the 25th minute, from a Lucas Moura strike.

The match remained stale until the 90th minute when a penalty was awarded to the Magpies which Callum Wilson brilliantly converted.

A Tottenham coach Nuno Santos who protested the call, earned an instant red card from referee Peter Bankes.

  • EPL: Newcastle back to square one after Saudi take-over bid fails

EPL: Newcastle back to square one after Saudi take-over bid fails

Newcastle United head into the short English Premier League (EPL) close season surrounded by uncertainty.

This has come after the collapse of the proposed Saudi take-over ——-with an owner who wants to sell the club but with no viable purchaser in place.

Club owner Mike Ashley was ready to sell the club to the investment group in a deal worth more than 305 million pounds.

This group included Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund PIF, Amanda Staveley’s PCP Capital Partners and Reuben Brothers.

But the take-over bid, announced in April, never emerged from the Premier League’s owners and directors test and on Thursday the consortium pulled out.

Fans, who had dreamt of big money signings and competing for European places, now face a more mundane reality for a team which finished 13th in the Premier League last season.

While there have been some reports of possible interest from potential purchasers in the US, no actual proposal has appeared.

Sources close to the Saudi consortium said they never had to deal with any rival bid.

The consortium blamed the prolonged scrutiny process and global uncertainty linked to the COVID-19 pandemic for their decision to withdraw.

Staveley has however suggested there may yet be some way to get the deal done.

Newcastle United managing director Lee Charnley offered similar hope by saying Ashley, founder of retail firm Frasers Group, remains committed to the Saudi deal.

“We acknowledge yesterday’s statement. Never say never, but to be clear Mike Ashley is 100 percent committed to this deal.

“However our current focus must now be on supporting (manager) Steve Bruce in the transfer market and on the preparations for the new season,” he said.

Ashley has not taken the club off the market but his chances of finding a new buyer may be hampered by the economic uncertainty following the pandemic.

“It is genuinely unlikely at the moment. Premier League buyouts either need very deep pockets (sovereign funds, et cetera) or a high degree of borrowing,” said football finance expert Rob Wilson of Sheffield Hallam University.

“This risk associated with the latter in an unsteady market looks unlikely. Hence, with no Saudi acquisition, it looks difficult,” he added.

Newcastle United have not featured in the UEFA Champions League since 2004.

They have not even won the English title since 1927 or the FA Cup since 1955, in spite of claiming one of the country’s largest fan bases.

One of the key problems for the bid was the continued conflict over Saudi Arabia’s response to cases of unauthorised broadcasting of Premier League games in the country.

This is part of a long-running dispute between the kingdom and neighbouring Qatar.

A source close to the bid said that PIF had offered to put together a Saudi consortium to buy the rights to broadcast the games in Saudi Arabia.

This is in view of the fact that Qatari company BeIN Sports, who owns the rights, has had its licence to broadcast in the kingdom removed.

Another source close to the deal put the blame for its collapse firmly on the Premier League.

“The problem with the deal was the intransigence of the Premier League. Everyone else was happy to proceed,” the source said.

The Premier League, who last year hired legal counsel to deal with the broadcast issues in Saudi, has declined to comment.

Former Newcastle United and England forward Alan Shearer said on Friday that disappointed fans were hoping that a new owner would yet emerge.

“There’s a lot of anger, understandably so, and a massive amount of disappointment,” he said.

“We can only hope and pray that new owners come in at some stage and take the club back to where it belongs because that’s what the fans of Newcastle United deserve.”
