We’ll enjoy playing against Ronaldo and Man Utd – Newcastle boss

Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce has analysed the outcome of playing against Manchester United on Saturday.

TheNewsGuru reports that, the Premier League fixture will mark Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford.

Bruce said, “It’s always going to be tough. And obviously with the added spice of Ronaldo coming back will add to that. We’ll make no mistake we’ve got quality players all over the pitch.

“So whenever you go to Old Trafford, the one thing you’re going to have to do is enjoy it, enjoy the challenge of playing against, you know, one of the big, big teams of this country and and relish the opportunity to go and see if we can spoil the party.”

On Miguel Almiron’s availability, Bruce added: “It’s a difficult one for the players because the ultimate is to play for your country. They’ve been drawn into a difficult situation. However, a bit of common sense has prevailed and he’s available for selection so we’re extremely pleased.”

EPL: West Ham fight back to beat Newcastle

West Ham United twice came from behind to get their Premier League campaign off to the ideal start by beating Newcastle in a hugely entertaining match at St James’ Park.

The Hammers trailed 2-1 at half time but staged a remarkable fightback in the second half with goals from Said Benrahma, Tomas Soucek and Michail Antonio.

Callum Wilson put Newcastle ahead after just five minutes, heading home Allan Saint-Maximin’s cross to delight the 50,000 vocal fans in the stadium.

West Ham equalised midway through the half after a VAR review ruled Aaron Cresswell’s cross-shot had gone all the way into the net untouched, despite the flag initially going up against Jarrod Bowen for offside.

Newcastle restored their lead just before the break when Jacob Murphy nodded in Matt Ritchie’s cross but West Ham levelled again soon after the restart as Benrahma headed in.

After Pablo Fornals was adjudged to have been fouled by Murphy inside the box, Antonio saw his penalty kept out by debutant keeper Freddie Woodman but Soucek reacted quickest to the rebound to put the Hammers ahead for the first time.

Antonio then wrapped up the win, driving in a thunderous shot for his 47th Premier League goal for the Hammers, equalling Paolo di Canio’s record in the competition for the club.

Torres hits hat-trick in thrilling Man City win

Manchester City twice came from behind to win a Premier League classic against Newcastle in their first game since being confirmed as Premier League champions.

Ferran Torres registered a hat-trick for City and his superb backheeled finish was the highlight of a remarkable game that swung back and forth.

Pep Guardiola, who surprisingly selected Scott Carson in goal – almost a decade on from his last English top-flight game – saw his City side dominate early on but fall behind to Emil Krafth’s powerful header from Jonjo Shelvey’s corner.

Joao Cancelo equalised with a deflected effort into the bottom right corner and when Torres expertly turned home Ilkay Gundogan’s free-kick 185 seconds later it looked as though the visitors could cut loose.

But Steve Bruce, who had called upon his Newcastle side to go toe-to-toe with the champions will have been delighted by the character his players displayed.

While they were forced to soak up considerable pressure, they levelled when City defender Nathan Ake was deemed to have fouled Joelinton, allowing the Brazilian to score from the penalty spot.

A poorly judged tackle by City full-back Kyle Walker handed the Magpies a second penalty just after the hour mark, with Joe Willock following-up to score after Carson had saved his initial spot-kick.

However, Torres and City struck back, with the Spaniard finding the top right corner from Gabriel Jesus’ delivery and becoming the youngest player to score a league hat-trick for a Guardiola team, when turning in a Cancelo shot that came back off the Newcastle post.

It rounded off a captivating encounter and brought up another milestone for Guardiola’s side, who set a new league record with their 12th consecutive victory away from home.

  • EPL: Newcastle stun Leicester in six-goal thriller

Newcastle moved to within one point of Premier League safety with an impressive 4-2 win over Champions League-chasing Leicester City.

Joe Willock put the visitors ahead with a cool finish after pouncing on an error from Foxes defender Caglar Soyuncu.

Paul Dummett doubled the Magpies’ lead, rising above Wesley Fofana to head past Kasper Schmeichel from Matt Ritchie’s corner, before Callum Wilson’s second-half double wrapped up the three points.

From 4-0 down, the hosts grabbed two goals inside the last 10 minutes through Marc Albrighton and Kelechi Iheanacho to give the Magpies a late scare.

The result moves Steve Bruce’s side up to 13th, 12 points ahead of 18th-placed Fulham who have four games left.

Leicester, in third, remain five points ahead of fifth-placed West Ham but have now played a game more.

“I have said quietly for weeks that we’d be OK when we got our big players back. My staff have worked tirelessly to make sure we got to this position,” Bruce said.

“We have turned it around at the right time. Normally [39 points] is enough. We are in the dizzying heights of 13th. We haven’t done it yet but we have made big strides in the last few weeks.”

EPL: Aubameyang scores on first start since malaria recovery

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored on his first start since recovering from malaria as Arsenal prepared for their Europa League showdown against Villarreal with a confidence-boosting win away to Newcastle at St James’ Park.

Mohamed Elneny scored his first Premier League goal for the Gunners, before Aubameyang – on his first start since 3 April – secured the points in the second half.

Speaking after the game, the Gabonese striker paid tribute to his “incredible” doctors for their part in his recovery.

“The last five minutes I was dying a little bit but to tell the truth I felt good for most of the game and I was happy with that,” Aubameyang told Sky Sports.

“The doctors did incredible work with me and I am really pleased with them and have to say thank you to them.”

Arsenal trail 2-1 after the away leg of their semi-final tie with Villarreal and victory in the north east of England was their first in four games.

The Magpies had an excellent April to distance themselves from the bottom three but they struggled to impose themselves on Sunday.

Steve Bruce’s side, who lost Fabian Schar to a straight red card after a late challenge on Gabriel Martinelli, remain nine points above the relegation zone with four games remaining.

Arsenal, who host Villarreal on Thursday, move back above Aston Villa into ninth place in the table.

EPL: Newcastle stun West Ham in 5-goal thriller

Newcastle took a big step towards securing their Premier League status with a dramatic win against 10-man West Ham.

Issa Diop’s own goal and a Joelinton tap-in had put the hosts in a commanding position at the break.

However, West Ham, who had Craig Dawson sent off for two first-half bookings, drew level from a Diop header and a Jesse Lingard penalty that was awarded after a VAR review.

But with the visitors seemingly on top, Newcastle had the final say, substitute Joe Willock heading an important winning goal that lifts Steve Bruce’s side up to 15th in the table, with a nine-point cushion to the bottom three.

West Ham remain fourth but have now played a game more than fellow Champions League hopefuls Chelsea and Liverpool, who will have the opportunity to leapfrog the Hammers before they play again.

  • Newcastle will have to sack me – Steve Bruce

Newcastle will have to sack me – Steve Bruce

Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce insists he’ll never quit.

The Magpies have won two matches from 19 in all competitions ahead of Saturday evening’s trip to fellow strugglers Brighton.

When asked about his future, the head coach said: “That decision will always be taken out of my hands.

“I only want what’s best for the club and over the last few months, in particular, I haven’t been good enough to get the results that this club demands.

“I understand it totally, the way it is. I will do my utmost to make sure that the club stays in the Premier League. For all the other stuff, I can’t influence that.

“But I’ll never walk away from it, I’ll never walk away from the challenge, that’s for sure.”

  • Liverpool undervalued me – Jonjo Shelvey

Liverpool undervalued me – Jonjo Shelvey

Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey felt Liverpool undervalued him.

At the age of 21, the midfielder joined Swansea City for £5million after deciding he wanted to move on, Tribalfootball reports.

He told the Studs Up podcast, “I wanted to go somewhere and not worry about if you have one bad game you’re still going to play, and I’d had that at Charlton.

“When you go to Liverpool, you play a game and someone comes back from injury and they’ve got a bigger name and they’re straight back in the team even if you’d done really well – I wanted to get away from that.”

On the transfer away from Anfield, Shelvey said: “I would say I was quite cheap at the time.”

  • Why I chose Newcastle over Aston Villa – Wilson

Why I chose Newcastle over Aston Villa – Wilson

Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson admits a move to Aston Villa was close.

Wilson has revealed that he could have joined Aston Villa instead of the Magpies this summer after Dean Smith’s side also agreed a fee with Bournemouth for his services.

Speaking on The Super6 Podcast, Wilson has revealed it was a straight choice between the two clubs as to who he would join, and explained how he came to the decision.

“On the same day Newcastle was agreed, Aston Villa was agreed as well,” he said.

“So for me I had two big decisions.

“It was a tricky one. I spoke with both managers and wanted to have the opportunity to go and see both clubs, similar to how I did with Bournemouth and Norwich.

“I wrote down pros and cons for both clubs and a sheet of paper, similar to how I make my big decisions.

“I looked at squads, I looked at everything.

“Nobody could have predicted how Aston Villa were going to go this season, or how Newcastle’s is going so far.

“But for me when Newcastle came around there was such history of the club, an iconic club, the number nines. And I keep in touch with Shearer from time to time, so there was a connection there.

“So I could go up there, prove to such a big club who Callum Wilson is, for me that’s what I was relishing.”

  • Man City Move Four Points Clear, Newcastle Lift Pressure On Bruce

Man City Move Four Points Clear, Newcastle Lift Pressure On Bruce

Manchester City opened up a four-point lead at the top of the Premier League with a 1-0 win over bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United, while Everton’s bid for a top-four finish was dented by a shock home defeat by Newcastle.

Gabriel Jesus scored the only goal inside the first 10 minutes at the Etihad as City extended their winning run to 12 games in all competitions.

Pep Guardiola’s men thrashed West Brom 5-0 in midweek, but after beating Manchester United away on Wednesday, the Blades again belied their lowly position to put up a fight against the leaders.

Ferran Torres and Jesus were two of five changes made by Guardiola and they combined to make the breakthrough as the Brazilian tapped home for his first Premier League goal since November.

City failed to build on the lead, but comfortably held out for a 15th clean sheet in their last 19 games to pull clear of second-placed Manchester United, who visit Arsenal later on Saturday.

At the other end of the table, Newcastle were the big winners of the day as they pulled clear of the drop zone with a first win in 12 games, while two of the bottom three West Brom and Fulham played out a 2-2 draw.

Magpies manager Steve Bruce’s future was under the spotlight after a wretched run that plunged his side into the relegation dogfight.

But Callum Wilson scored twice in the final 17 minutes to earn a deserved 2-0 victory at Goodison Park on a bad day for Carlo Ancelotti’s men.

Everton could have moved to within a point of local rivals Liverpool in fourth with a win, but rarely looked like scoring and were finally punished for a poor performance when Wilson lost his marker at a Jonjo Shelvey corner and looped a header across Jordan Pickford and inside the far upright.

Wilson was then denied by the post after rounding Pickford, but the former Bournemouth striker made no mistake when Newcastle countered quickly in stoppage time.

Bruce’s men are now eight points clear of the relegation zone after a point each did little for West Brom or Fulham’s battle to beat the drop.

The visitors were dominant in the first half at the Hawthorns and were made to regret not building on Bobby Decordova-Reid’s opener.
