EPL: Almiron scores after 20 seconds as Newcastle whip West Brom

Miguel Almiron scored in 20 seconds as Newcastle returned from their coronavirus hiatus to beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1, while under-fire Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer prepared for a crucial derby against Manchester City on Saturday.

Playing for the first time since their match against Aston Villa was postponed due to a Covid-19 outbreak in their squad, Newcastle took less than a minute to grab the lead when Almiron swept his shot past West Brom keeper Sam Johnstone.

West Brom drew level five minutes into the second half at St James’ Park.

Matt Phillips delivered a low cross which was met by defender Darnell Furlong, who lashed an unstoppable low shot past Karl Darlow.

Newcastle clinched the points in the 82nd minute when Dwight Gayle met a superb cross by fellow substitute Jacob Murphy to head past Johnstone.

Newcastle’s second successive victory lifted the gloom from their virus issues, but struggling West Brom stay second bottom.

Anwar El Ghazi’s last-gasp penalty fired 10-man Aston Villa to a dramatic 1-0 win against Wolves.

Villa had Douglas Luiz sent off in the final minutes for two bookings after the Brazilian midfielder caught Daniel Podence with an elbow.

But Nelson Semedo’s stoppage-time foul on John McGinn triggered El Ghazi’s penalty before Wolves midfielder Joao Moutinho was dismissed for a second yellow card just moments from full-time in a fractious local derby.

After two successive defeats, Villa will hope they are back on track with just their second win in six games.

Villa have won four of their five away league matches this season, while mid-table Wolves have only one win in their last five games.

Newcastle still short of players after COVID-19 outbreak – Bruce

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce said on Friday that they are still without some of the players who tested positive for COVID-19, but he was relieved to have “two or three” back in the match day squad.

Newcastle’s training ground was closed last week after several members of the squad and staff tested positive for the novel coronavirus, forcing the league to postpone their match against Aston Villa.

However, Newcastle resumed full training this week and Bruce said they were in a better situation going into Saturday’s match against West Bromwich Albion.

“People have been tested twice and come back negative. We’ve got enough to hopefully win us the match,” Bruce told reporters while praising the club’s medical staff.

“We hope we’ve curtailed it, certainly looks that way. We still have some individuals self-isolating… We have two or three players that have come back into the squad who have had it and tested negative.

“It was a significant number of people in a tight-knit group (who tested positive). We will be without a chunk of players tomorrow, but as of Monday we will have a few coming back that will help us.”

Bruce did not name the individuals who tested positive out of respect for their privacy.

Although the training ground was closed, Bruce said the players were given instructions to train on their own.

“They’ve had their own individual programmes similar to when we went into lockdown. The fitness coach has been able to monitor them,” Bruce added.

“We were back to full training on Wednesday and all of them bounced in having not played or trained. They enjoyed being back.”

Chelsea go top of Premier League

Chelsea moved to the top of the Premier League table, if only for a few hours, after a solid win at Newcastle United, their fifth straight victory in all competitions.

Federico Fernandez’s own goal set the Blues on their way, the Argentine defender poking the ball over his own line while under pressure from Ben Chilwell.

But Abraham made sure of the points with a smart finish following Werner’s pass after Newcastle had threatened through Isaac Hayden and Joelinton. Sean Longstaff hit the bar for the home side towards the end.

Chelsea, who started the day fifth, are top the table on goal difference ahead of Leicester, who are at Liverpool on Sunday.

Aston Villa, who host Brighton at 15:00 GMT, could replace Chelsea at the summit with a big win, while Tottenham, who entertain Manchester City at 17:30, will move to the summit with a victory.

EPL players are being treated like lab rats – Danny Rose

Newcastle United defender Danny Rose says English Premier League (EPL) players are being treated like “lab rats”, after teams were given permission to return to training in small groups this week.

The England international, who is on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, has been a vocal critic of the league’s plans to restart the season.

The 2019/2020 season has been suspended since mid-March due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

The league said on Tuesday that six people from three different clubs had tested positive for COVID-19 out of a sample of 748 individuals.

“People are suggesting we should go back to football, like we’re guinea pigs or lab rats. We’re going to experiment this phase and see if it works or not,” Rose said.

“I can just imagine people at home saying, `Well, they earn that amount of money so they should be going back.’

“For stuff like that, I think, is it worth the hassle? I could be potentially risking my health for people’s entertainment and that’s not something I want to be involved in if I’m honest.”

Watford have confirmed that three people from the club, including one player, have tested positive for COVID-19.

Burnley said their assistant coach Ian Woan was among those to return a positive result after being tested on Sunday.

Watford skipper Troy Deeney has said he would not resume training out of concern for his son’s health.

EPL: I should’ve done more at Liverpool – Shelvey

Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey regrets not making the most of his time with Liverpool.

Shelvey admits he should have “probably” stayed at Liverpool in 2013.

He told Sky Sports: “It could have been a lot better, to be honest with you. Don’t get me wrong, by the time I finish I will have had a fantastic career.

“But you do sit there sometimes and think, ‘could I have gone higher? Could I have been playing in the Champions League?’

“Hopefully one day I still will, but time’s running out now. You go back in the past and you’ve probably made certain decisions that were wrong.

“I was only 21 when I left. I don’t think you would find many other players who go there at 17 and leave at 21 and I think that speaks a lot of what I’m like as a character.

“I wasn’t happy playing one or two games then coming out of the team. I wanted to carry on playing week in, week out.

“I’d been on loan at Blackpool, and at Charlton I’d been obviously playing at such an early age. I don’t think that helped because you get that knack for playing games and constantly being in the team.

“When you’re playing once and then not playing for six games, I don’t care what any footballer says, you don’t feel involved. You don’t feel part of the team.

“I think that was the feeling I wanted but, in hindsight, should I have stayed? Probably, yeah.

“Even if it was only for another year or two, just to see how things changed. But it is what it is at the end of the day.

“Every decision I’ve made in my career was just to play, to try and get as much game-time as possible. I can’t say I’ve got too many regrets.”

Incoming Newcastle owners to offer Pochettino bumper deal

Newcastle United’s incoming owners are ready to move for former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Should the deal go through, it is expected that wholesale changes and investment will be in the offing, including a change in management.

Sky Sports says boss Steve Bruce is likely to be given until the end of the season by any new owners, however, for the long-term vision of the club, it is likely that change will be sought – with Pochettino one of the names in the frame.

The Argentine is in fact the club’s first choice, with a £19m-a-year deal thought to be being prepared to entice the former Tottenham boss to Tyneside.

That figure would make him the third-highest paid manager in the world, with only Atletico Madrid’s Diego Simeone and Pep Guardiola at Manchester City earning more.

  • Premier League warned over Newcastle takeover

Premier League warned over Newcastle takeover

The Premier League has been urged by one of its largest overseas broadcast partners to “fully interrogate” Newcastle United’s proposed £300m takeover.

The chief executive of the Qatar-based TV giant beIN Sport, Yousef al-Obaidly, has written to the chairs of top-flight clubs about the deal, which could see the Magpies bought by a Saudi-backed consortium.

In the letter, Al-Obaidly accuses the Saudi Arabian government of the “facilitation of the near three-year theft of the Premier League’s commercial rights – and in turn your club’s commercial revenues – through its backing of the huge-scale beoutQ pirate service”.

“It is no exaggeration to say that the future economic model of football is at stake,” added Al-Obaidly, who has also written to Premier League chief executive Richard Masters.

Coronavirus: Premier League club ban players from shaking hands

Premier League side Newcastle have introduced a training ground handshake ban because of coronavirus, says manager Steve Bruce.

More than 80,000 people have been infected by the virus worldwide, resulting in nearly 2,800 deaths.

“There’s a ritual that everybody shakes hands when we see each other every morning – we’ve stopped that on the advice of the doctor,” said Bruce.

“Thankfully, we’ve got a superb doctor here and he will keep us informed of what we have to do.”

Bruce added: “We’re like everybody else, we’re glued to the TV for where it’s going to go next and let’s hope it doesn’t get any worse in this country.”

  • Newcastle stun Chelsea with late Hayden header

Newcastle stun Chelsea with late Hayden header

Issac Hayden’s 94th-minute header snatched a stunning 1-0 win over Chelsea, earning Newcastle their first Premier League victory of 2020.

Chelsea had 70 per cent of the possession and 19 shots but were kept at bay by a well-drilled Newcastle side, who completed the ultimate smash-and-grab with 30 seconds to play as Hayden glanced an Allan Saint-Maximin cross home to send St James’ Park into raptures.

But Newcastle’s sensational finish was in contrast to their start, when Jetro Willems was stretchered off inside 10 minutes to increase Steve Bruce’s injury problems.

Reece James was also taken off injured for Chelsea, who will be lamenting their lack of finishing in a game they dominated.

Newcastle’s victory moves them up a place into 12th, while Chelsea remain in fourth with a five-point cushion over Manchester United, who travel to Liverpool on Super Sunday.

  • EPL: Chelsea beat Newcastle to move third

EPL: Chelsea beat Newcastle to move third

Marcos Alonso’s second-half strike broke Newcastle’s resistance as Chelsea moved up to third in the Premier League with their fifth successive win in all competitions.

The Blues seemed set for another frustrating day at Stamford Bridge after Tammy Abraham saw his header hit the bar and Martin Dubravka denied Christian Pulisic.

But they finally got their reward for relentless second-half pressure when Spanish left-back Alonso drove in a firm, angled shot in the 73rd minute.

They should have scored a second through Abraham, but the England international’s shot was brilliantly blocked by DeAndre Yedlin.

Steve Bruce’s Magpies were preoccupied with defending for much of the match and failed to test Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Defeat means they drop into the relegation zone, although their manager will point to the fact they have now played every one of the ‘big six’ in their first nine games, bar Manchester City.
