  • EPL: Son rescues Tottenham with late win over Newcastle

Tottenham moved into second in the Premier League as Son Heung-min struck late to deny a gallant Newcastle a point at Wembley Stadium.

The South Korean forward benefitted from a Martin Dubravka error with seven minutes left as his powerful 20-yard shot went under the Newcastle goalkeeper’s body.

The away side were well organised and gritty throughout, with Fabian Schar’s acrobatic goalline clearance to deny Christian Eriksen in the second half epitomising their spirit.

Rafael Benitez’s side had chances of their own, with Salomon Rondon heading against the post with the score at 0-0 but their resistance was broken when substitute Fernando Llorente laid the ball off for Son to score a ninth goal in his past 10 Spurs appearances.

The win means Mauricio Pochettino’s side set a Premier League record as they reached 29 matches in a row without a draw, eclipsing Bolton’s mark of 28 set in 2011.

  • Man City’s title hope hangs in defeat to Newcastle

Man City’s title hope hangs in defeat to Newcastle

Manchester City’s title hopes suffered a huge blow as Newcastle came from a goal down to record a remarkable victory over the defending champions at St James’ Park.

Two defensive lapses cost Pep Guardiola’s side the chance to cut Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League to one point. The Reds face Leicester at home on Wednesday.

City could not have got off to a better start when Sergio Aguero’s hooked home after only 24 seconds.

The Argentine also had a goal disallowed soon after when referee Paul Tierney adjudged Kevin De Bruyne had delivered a free-kick before he gave him the signal. The Belgian was booked as a consequence.

Guardiola’s side rarely troubled Magpies keeper Martin Dubravka thereafter, and Rafael Benitez’s men grew in belief.

The home support erupted in the 66th minute when Salomon Rondon instinctively fired in after connecting with Isaac Hayden’s header from 12 yards out.

And the match turned on its head in the 80th minute when the Magpies were awarded a penalty after Fernandinho – overplaying at the back – fouled Sean Longstaff in the area after being robbed of possession.

Matt Ritchie waited more than two minutes as City keeper Ederson received treatment, before firing his spot-kick beyond the reach of the Brazilian.

  • FA Cup: Joselu rescues Newcastle in extra-time

FA Cup: Joselu rescues Newcastle in extra-time

Newcastle scored two goals in extra time to defeat Blackburn in their FA Cup third-round replay at Ewood Park.

Sean Longstaff scored after a minute for the visitors with a deflected 25-yard shot, before Callum Roberts added the second with a fine volley.

But Adam Armstrong pulled one back from Danny Graham’s pass and Darragh Lenihan’s powerful header made it 2-2.

In extra time, Joselu scored from a rebound and Ayoze Perez’s powerful strike sealed the win for the visitors.

Spanish striker Joselu appeared to be slightly offside for the goal that made it 3-2, as he reacted quickest after Blackburn keeper David Raya had spilled Fabian Schar’s long-range shot.

Newcastle’s win was their first in seven games in all competitions, since a 1-0 Premier League victory at Huddersfield on 15 December, and they will play Watford at home in the fourth round on 26 January.

It is also only the sixth time they have won an FA Cup tie since Mike Ashley became the owner of the club in 2007.

Chelsea’s Willian superb strike leaves Newcastle in relegation zone

Chelsea moved one point behind third-placed Tottenham with a victory over a Newcastle side who are now in the relegation zone.

Pedro gave the Blues an eighth-minute lead when he collected David Luiz’s ball over the top, took a touch, then shot past Martin Dubravka.

But Newcastle equalised through Ciaran Clark’s powerful header when he got between Antonio Rudiger and David Luiz from Matt Ritchie’s corner.

Willian won it for Chelsea in the second half with a fine curling finish after being played in by Eden Hazard.

The result leaves Maurizio Sarri’s side fourth, six points clear of Arsenal, who they face at Emirates Stadium in their next game on 19 January.

  • EPL: Rafael Benitez wins manager of the month

EPL: Rafael Benitez wins manager of the month

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez has been named Premier League manager of the month for November.

Newcastle were 19th in the table at the start of November, with no wins from their first 10 games, before three straight victories moved them out of the relegation zone.

The Magpies beat Watford and Bournemouth at St James’ Park before an away win at Burnley.

It is the fifth time the Spaniard has won the award in the top flight.

“It’s always good to win trophies,” said Benitez, whose side currently sit 15th.

“Obviously I would like to win more manager of the months, then we would be in a better position in the table.

“But it’s always positive and it is good also for the staff. Everybody is helping you and it is an extra motivation.”

  • West Ham end Newcastle’s unbeaten run with Hernandez double

West Ham end Newcastle’s unbeaten run with Hernandez double

Javier Hernandez scored twice as West Ham ended Newcastle’s run of three wins with an emphatic victory at St James’ Park.

The match was a tale of two attacks – one which made the most of their chances, and the other which was wasteful and short of quality.

The Mexican grabbed his first in the 11th minute, just as some Newcastle fans were taking to their seats following a “walk-in protest” against the club owner – had they waited another minute they would not have witnessed the calamitous defending from their side.

Robert Snodgrass was allowed to run down the left and deliver an in-swinging cross for his Mexican team-mate who got himself in front of Federico Fernandez to poke in.

Hernandez then missed a couple of great chances before he fired home the second from Marko Arnautovic’s flick-on.

And with the final kick of the game, Felipe Anderson capped off an exceptional display by slotting in West Ham’s third under the body of keeper Martin Dubravka.

The victory was only the Hammers’ second in the league at Newcastle since 1998, and moves them into 13th spot, on 15 points, Newcastle drop down to 14th and have 12 points.

  • Rafael Benitez fined £60K for referee comments

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez has been fined £60,000 after accepting a charge for commenting about the referee prior to his team’s Premier League game against Crystal Palace last month.

Benitez was responding to Palace forward Wilfried Zaha, who had said he was not being protected by referees.
The Spaniard said he had “a lot of confidence” in referee Andre Marriner.
The Football Association constituted the comments as improper conduct and/or bringing the game into disrepute.
FA rules state managers are not allowed to talk about specific referees prior to a game.
Zaha had said he believed that he would need to have his leg broken before opponents were show a red card.
Benitez responded: “I am surprised because normally the FA deal with these comments. I have a lot of confidence with Andre Marriner.
“He has a lot of experience, even if his record with our players is not that great in terms of red cards. He is an experienced referee.
“Zaha is a good player, no doubt about that, but I think the FA have to deal with his comments. I think Andre Marriner will not have this in the back of his head.
“The way that he [Zaha] plays, normally, he will receive more tackles than other players because he likes to run at players. It won’t make any difference for our players.”
    The game finished 0-0.

  • Late drama as Forest knock Newcastle out of Carabao Cup

Nottingham Forest knocked Premier League Newcastle out of the Carabao Cup for the second consecutive season after a dramatic finale.

Championship outfit Forest took the lead in the second minute when former Newcastle striker Daryl Murphy nodded in Sam Byram’s cross from close range.

Newcastle equalised in the second of six minutes of injury time when Salomon Rondon angled in a powerful low shot.

But two minutes later Matty Cash fired home before Gil Dias’ late chip.

Forest met Newcastle at the same stage of competition last season and claimed a thrilling 3-2 victory at St James’ Park.

The conclusion to this match was just as enthralling as Forest deservedly secured their place in the third round.

Aitor Karanka’s side had taken the lead when on-loan West Ham full-back Byram crossed for Murphy at the near post.

Murphy, who scored six times in 18 appearances in all competitions for Newcastle, escaped his marker and glanced a header past Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow.

Murphy almost had a second five minutes into the second half when Darlow fumbled a shot from Dias, only for Federico Fernandez to make a brilliant last-ditch block.

Darlow, a former Forest player, made a crucial save just after the hour mark when he pawed away an audacious chip from Joao Carvalho.

Forest seems to be cruising to the finish only for substitute Rondon to equalise with clinical finish – Newcastle’s only attempt on target in the match – after a clever pass from Ayoze Perez.

However, Forest hit back when Darlow parried Dias’ shot and Cash arrived in the penalty area to slide the ball home.

Newcastle then had claim for a penalty when Luke Steele grappled with Perez inside the box but referee Jeremy Simpson waved play on.

The impressive Dias then caught Newcastle on the counter and superbly chipped Darlow to seal the victory.

  • EPL: Chelsea grab late win at Newcastle

Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea maintained their winning start to the Premier League season with victory over Newcastle United in a match featuring three goals in 11 second-half minutes.

Eden Hazard, on his first start this season for the Blues, netted from the penalty spot in the 76th minute before substitute Joselu levelled with a brilliant header at St James’ Park.

But, having been resolute in defence for the majority of the game, Newcastle failed to clear their lines and Marcos Alonso’s shot took a deflection off DeAndre Yedlin.

  • Newcastle beat Man Utd to win first home league game since October

Newcastle won a Premier League home game for the first time since October with a surprise victory over second-placed Manchester United.

Matt Ritchie scored the only goal in the second half as the Magpies climbed out of the relegation zone and left the visitors 16 points adrift of leaders Manchester City.

The Red Devils missed a string of chances to take something from a ground at which manager Jose Mourinho is yet to win a league match.

But debutant Martin Dubravka was excellent in the Newcastle goal, denying Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial, Ashley Young and Michael Carrick.

And the hosts could have had a first-half penalty when Chris Smalling tripped Dwight Gayle.

Defeat for Manchester United raises the prospect of Manchester City being crowned champions when the teams meet at Etihad Stadium on 7 April.

Should both teams win all of their league matches prior to that, City would only need to draw with their fierce rivals to secure the title that day.

Mourinho said after the game that Newcastle had fought “like animals” – and the hosts certainly produced a fierce and committed performance.

The Magpies made more sprints (553 to their opponents’ 490), ran further (115km to 105km), and in DeAndre Yedlin and Ritchie had the game’s fastest and most industrious players.

Manager Rafael Benitez may be hoping recent signing Islam Slimani, who missed this game, can add more to an attack that only managed three shots on target, but Ritchie was clinical when it mattered.

Smalling was penalised for a dive that allowed the impressive Jonjo Shelvey to send in a free-kick. The equally eye-catching Florian Lejeune headed it down, and Ritchie collected Gayle’s flick to shoot past David de Gea.

That ended a run of 43 shots without a Premier League goal for Ritchie – and gave Newcastle their first home win in the league since 21 October.

Prior to the match they were just one point better off than in their 2015-16 relegation season, but this win moved them up to 13th – and only three points behind 10th-placed Bournemouth.
