EPL: Arteta frustrated as Newcastle defeat Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was disheartened with how his team performed in a 1-0 loss to Newcastle on Saturday in a potential blow to their Premier League title chase.

The gaffer decried the fact that they were  sucked into playing Newcastle’s style of game.

Alexander Isak headed home in the 12th minute in Newcastle’s first win in six league games, leaving Arsenal provisionally third in the Premier League table behind Manchester City and Liverpool, who were both playing later on Saturday.

Arteta’s side generated few chances on an afternoon that marked the first time since May 2022 that they had lost two consecutive away league matches. They were shocked 2-0 by Bournemouth on Oct. 19.

“We deserved to lose today,” Arteta told Premier League Productions. “I thought we started really well and were really dominant. We didn’t defend the box well enough. Credit to them. They scored a great goal with a good ball.

“Then the game changes and you start to play a different game. You have to adapt and we didn’t do that well enough. I am very frustrated.

“We got dragged into a game they are looking for constantly and we couldn’t play the game that we wanted.”

Newcastle defender Lewis Hall threw his body in front of Arsenal’s lone shot on target, blocking Mikel Merino’s volley from close range in the first half.

Declan Rice squandered a terrific chance in injury time, latching on to a cross but firing it wide of the net.

“We had two big chances — Mikel had a big one, Declan had a big one. We lacked answers,” Arteta said.

His squad are winless in their last three Premier League matches.

“We can say whatever we want. We will struggle to find the words today. We have to show it on the pitch on Wednesday night (against Inter Milan in a Champions League match).

“You have to be at your best every time to give yourself a chance to win”.

EPL: Cole Palmer hits seventh of season in Newcastle win

Cole Palmer scored his seventh goal of the season as Chelsea beat Newcastle to continue their impressive start to the season.

Palmer struck early in the second half when his clean strike from outside the box beat Nick Pope at his near post.

Nicolas Jackson’s fifth league goal of the campaign had given the Blues an 18th-minute lead when he fired home from Pedro Neto’s pass.

But Newcastle were level 14 minutes later thanks to Alexander Isak’s tap-in.

Isak perhaps should have levelled towards the end of the game after rounding goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, but his attempt to walk the ball in was thwarted by Chelsea defenders.

Chelsea thought they had a late penalty when Christopher Nkunku went down inside the box under a challenge. It was initially given but the decision was overturned following a review by the video assistant referee after it appeared Nkunku slipped.

In the end, Palmer’s seventh goal in just nine Premier League games secured the three points that elevated Chelsea to fourth in the table.

They could drop to fifth if Arsenal avoid defeat against Liverpool later on Sunday, but Chelsea’s presence in the higher reaches underlines their impressive form under boss Enzo Maresca so far this season.

They have won five of their nine Premier League games under the former Leicester manager, losing only to Manchester City and Liverpool.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are 12th and are now winless in their last five league outings.

EPL: Pep Guardiola frustrated after after Newcastle draw

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola admitted frustration after their 1-1 draw at Newcastle United in Saturday’s early kickoff.

Josko Gvardiol had City ahead before Anthony Gordon converted a penalty for the draw.

Guardiola later said: “They had moments in first ten minutes and after their goal, but in general we played really good.

“We made bad decisions at the last minute to make it 2-0. It is always difficult here with their physicality and they defend so deep. We had chances but (Nick) Pope was brilliant so we take the point.

“When we scored we played better. We make a mistake and after they play better. But then we take the game again and had chances to win it.”

On Mateo Kovacic and Rico Lewis in midfield, he added: “Mateo was brilliant, Rico too. Bernardo played there. Really good.”

  • Football Transfers: Chelsea’s Noni Madueke poised to join Newcastle Utd

Football Transfers: Chelsea’s Noni Madueke poised to join Newcastle Utd

Chukwunonso ‘Noni’ Madueke is reportedly close to leaving Chelsea to join Newcastle United.

Madueke joined Chelsea from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023. Despite a slow start in West London, he displayed flashes of his potential last season, scoring six goals and providing two assists in 29 appearances. However, the 23-year-old winger started only 17 of those games, often playing second fiddle to Cole Palmer.

With new manager Enzo Maresca unlikely to change this arrangement, Madueke has decided to leave Chelsea. According to Football Insider, he has agreed to a deal with Newcastle United, where he hopes to flourish under Eddie Howe.

Currently 22 years old, Madueke is on Chelsea’s pre-season tour in the USA and played in their 2-2 draw with Wrexham on Thursday, July 25. Newcastle is expected to match the £29 million Chelsea paid PSV for Madueke last year.

Internationally, Madueke was born in Barnet, London, to Nigerian parents, making him eligible to represent both Nigeria and England.

He has already played for England from U16 to U21 levels and was a key member of the squad that won the UEFA European Under-21 Championship last year.

  • Chelsea make Jackson swap offer for Isak

Chelsea make Jackson swap offer for Isak

Chelsea have made a swap attempt for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak.

The Blues have made contact with Newcastle over the past week for the Swede.

The Sun says Chelsea have raised the prospect of Nicolas Jackson moving in the opposite direction during talks.

Jackson had an explosive first season in England, hitting 17 goals and making six assists across all competitions, though also drew heavy criticism from pundits.

He also scored four goals in his last five Premier League games.

However, Newcastle have little interest in parting with Isak, though they’re under pressure to sell due to concerns over the Profit & Sustainability laws.

  • Tonali speaks to Italian students about gambling

Tonali speaks to Italian students about gambling

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has been speaking to local Italian high school students as part of his gambling punishment.

Tonali is serving a playing ban for betting on games, with the punishment including speaking to young people about his issues.

Speaking to students at Salvemini high school, Tonali said: “Hiding behind the barriers of a problem is never the solution. Instead, we need to talk about it. Acquire help. My true wealth lies not in multi-million dollar contracts, but in being surrounded by people who love me and who continue to prove it to me every day.

“I was recently in a factory. I was able to think of those who work ten hours a day, just to bring in a salary. I understood many valuable things. One above all: if a worker lost his job, his entire family would pay the consequences. Well, that’s also why I consider myself lucky. I made a mistake, but I didn’t lose anything.”

He also told the young players at the Nick Bari and Levante Azzurro football schools: “Maybe there is someone among you who bets and doesn’t say it, because we often lock ourselves away. However, when you are gambling and have a high salary, facing gambling is an imminent risk.

“I hid and made a mistake. You don’t stop, others stop you. And you can also jeopardize your friendships, relationships, and work. These are some of the biggest risks. In those years when everything seemed perfect, what I missed most was not being able to spend the time I would have liked with my old friends. Those on the field, at school, those with whom he also played football like me and was able to touch the sky with his finger, he is linked by the most beautiful memories. Because all good things happen.”

  • Diallo, Hojlund rescue under-fire Erik ten Hag against Newcastle

Diallo, Hojlund rescue under-fire Erik ten Hag against Newcastle

Amad Diallo’s rocket and Rasmus Hojlund’s fine finish secured Manchester United and under-fire Erik ten Hag a much-needed win against fellow European hopefuls Newcastle in their final home match of a season to forget.

The injury-ravaged Red Devils have lost 19 in all competitions this term and knew defeat on Wednesday would set unwanted records, as well as end any hope of continental qualification through the Premier League.

But as United’s new decision-makers Ineos consider how to turn the club around, there was a glimpse of what could have been – and perhaps could yet still be – under Ten Hag as they ran out 3-2 victors against Newcastle.

It was far from perfect but Kobbie Mainoo put United into a deserved lead midway through a first half that saw Anthony Gordon’s penalty appeals rejected and a Dan Burn header cleared off the line by Casemiro.

Gordon drew Newcastle level early in the second half and Sofyan Amrabat’s block sent an Alexander Isak strike looping onto the bar as Ten Hag’s team wobbled, only for Diallo to laser the hosts back ahead.

Recently criticised substitute Hojlund drove home a third as the clock wound down, meaning Lewis Hall’s wonderful stoppage-time strike was only a consolation.

The win puts eighth-placed United level on 53 points with Newcastle in seventh, but they are well behind on goal difference heading into the final day of the season.

EPL: Isak fires brace as Newcastle thrash Tottenham 4-0 at St James’ park

Alexander Isak scored two beautiful goals  as Newcastle thrashed Tottenham Hotspurs 4-0 at St James’ park in Saturday early kick off.

Isak scored one goal in each half for  the toons as Gordon and Schar completed the rout at St James’ park.

Anthony Gordan and Fabian Schar were also on target for the Magpies, while Timo Werner had two chances for Spurs but his finishing let him down.

Newcastle’s emphatic victory lifted them up to sixth in the table – a point ahead of Manchester United, who face Bournemouth at 17:30 BST on Saturday.

  • EPL: Barnes scores brace as Newcastle defeat West Ham 4-3 in seven goal thriller

EPL: Barnes scores brace as Newcastle defeat West Ham 4-3 in seven goal thriller

Newcastle United climbed up to eighth position on the English Premier League log after defeating West Ham United 4-3 at St James’ park on Saturday afternoon.

Harvey Barnes was the hero of the afternoon as his two goals ensured the Toons end the game with three maximum points.

Newcastle won a penalty just three minutes from the blast of the whistle when Anthony Gordon was fouled in the penalty area.

Consequently, after a long VAR check, Alexander Isak put the host in front.

Michail Antonio brought the Hammers on to level terms before Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen scored within minutes either side of half-time.

Isak scored his second penalty of the afternoon after Gordon was again adjudged to have been fouled and Barnes grabbed the equaliser in the 83rd minute.

With momentum and a vociferous St James’ Park firmly behind them, Newcastle pressed on and Barnes emphatically fired in a 90th-minute winner.

There was further drama to come in injury time as Newcastle were reduced to 10 men when Gordon received a second yellow card for kicking the ball away, but they managed to hold out for a victory that could prove vital in their pursuit of European football.

  • Pochettino on Newcastle win: This is a different Chelsea

Pochettino on Newcastle win: This is a different Chelsea

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino admits his team were under pressure on Monday night.

The Blues came away with a battling 3-2 win against Newcastle United in the Premier League.

While the result still keeps them in 11th place, Pochettino knows they can use it as a springboard to move up the table before the season concludes.

Post-game, he stated: “I think we need to understand we are in Chelsea and of course when you are in a project that is completely different, some people can be confused. When people don’t want to listen, it is difficult, but we are trying to explain that we are in a different Chelsea, building something different and of course it is going to be tough.

“It’s about believing, even when it is in a tough situation, a tough circumstance, like when we were playing in the final for 120 minutes, after three days we play in the FA Cup and then against Brentford. In six days we play three very tough games and with all of the circumstances, nearly with the same team and the players were really tired.

“If that means we are a disaster, okay, but the most important thing is that it is not affecting us, it is not affecting the team. The team knew what they needed to do and we kept believing. I think win the game today, it is important for us and our fans to be a little bit more calm. If we don’t win next game then it is going to be again a problem, but that is Chelsea and the most important thing is to try and translate the reality.

“I don’t want again to explain the situation but some problems don’t exist. The problem is that the team needs to be more mature, the team needs to be more together. Today the defensive line played together for the first time – Malo Gusto, Axel Disasi, Trevoh Chalobah and Marc Cucurella. They were good, yes, but we made some mistakes because of this situation that they didn’t play together before.

“But that is not an excuse. That is a fact, that is a reality. The most important thing is to keep moving because we are not going to give up, be strong, and we all agree the fans are right to complain, of course, but we have no right to give up and say we don’t believe. No, no, no, it’s to show the character and to live with this type of situation and keep moving.

“Today was great to show the players fighting, performing, okay not maybe great, but yes of course caring about the team and in the end beating a team that last season was fighting for the Premier League, the top four and fighting in the Champions League. And this season have good players, it’s not easy, Newcastle are a very good team. Good credit to the team and to everyone.”
