Arsenal character fuelled bounce-back victory – Arteta

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta praised his players’ mentality after an impressive response to their defeat at Porto as they blew away Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Gunners scored twice in each half of their 4-1 home victory to record a sixth straight league win, a run in which they have racked up an aggregate scoreline of 25-3.

Saturday’s performance kept the pressure on the Premier League’s top two of Liverpool and Manchester City.

“I think we had a great performance, big credit to the boys after two days and just half a day to prepare the game,” Arteta told reporters.

“The way we executed everything, the intensity, the commitment, the determination, the aggression, and progression in everything that we were doing with the ball.

“They played with a lot of courage and we got rewarded.”

The Arsenal manager was particularly pleased with his side’s reaction.

“We showed how much we want it … I could sense it from the moment we were in Porto that we were ready for the game,” he said.

“In sport, things happen for a reason, you have to learn from that. We have to understand why that happened and be better.”

Arteta, however, was still keeping his feet firmly on the ground.

“We could have scored many more today,” he said. “We have to continue to do that, keep developing, all the things that we can still do better.”

EPL: Arsenal maul Newcastle 4-1 at Emirate, keep title hopes alive

Arsenal’s pursuit of the English Premier League title remains on course as they recorded a massive 4-1 victory against visiting Newcastle United at the Emirates on Saturday night.

Newcastle’s only goal came in at the death when substitute, Joe Willock scored the Visitor’s consolation goal.

The victory took Mikel Arteta’s side to 58 points after 26 games, two behind leaders Liverpool and a point adrift of Manchester City, who earlier won 1-0 at Bournemouth.

Arsenal have now scored 25 goals in their last six Premier League games and the win over Newcastle was the perfect tonic.

The race for the EPL title continues to hot up among three contenders, Liverpool, City and Arsenal.

EPL: De Gea set to return to Premier League

Former Manchester United and former goalkeeper, David De Gea, headed back to the premiership to continue his career.

Reports say that the Spaniard could be heading to the Saint James’ park to team up with Newcastle in January transfer Window.

Newcastle number 1 goalie, Nick Pope was ruled out for up to five months.

Pope dislocated his left shoulder during their 1-0 win at home to Manchester United on Saturday.

The 31-year-old is now expected to be sidelined until April, according to the Telegraph.

While Pope fights to be fit in time for the closing stages of the season, Howe will in the meantime need to find a new No.1.

Although former first-choice goalkeeper Martin Dubravka replaced Pope on Saturday and Liverpool flop Loris Karius is still at St James’ Park, the ex-Burnley star’s proper replacement is more likely to be someone who arrives in the January transfer window.

De Gea has not played for any team since his contract with United expired in the summer.

  • Pochettino slams Chelsea players after Newcastle defeat

Pochettino slams Chelsea players after Newcastle defeat

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino slammed his players’ mentality after defeat at Newcastle.

The Blues lost 4-1 on the day with captain Reece James being sent off.

Pochettino said: “We were not prepared in the best way to compete today. That is my concern. We thought we were ready to compete today but we didn’t in the way the competition demanded.

“Even if Newcastle wasn’t great, it was an easy win. To come here, Chelsea, and show it would be difficult for them to play to win the game and beat us. It was so easy the way that we conceded. the way we were soft in every single challenge, we did not show we were playing for something important.

“That is why it made me angry and disappointed. Even if we talk about being a young team, we need to learn. These type of games make me very, very, very, very, very angry because it is about showing more personality and character. Okay we are young but we can not miss this type of opportunity to show our best.

“We can not come from Tottenham, Man City, [where] around the world people praised Chelsea and then… ‘Okay, I stop one step before, I don’t do the effort in the right moment. Ok no problem it is going to fix my teammate in behind’. That is a problem. We need to be more solid in this area.

“Mental of course and attitude, it is not attitude, it is about showing more strength in our mental game and be ready to compete. This is not the same that play football. I can play football, you can play football but to compete? I want to be ready to compete but today we didn’t.”

  • Mauricio Pochettino reacts to Newcastle heavy defeat

Mauricio Pochettino reacts to Newcastle heavy defeat

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino says defeat at Newcastle United was their worst for the season.

Chelsea were thumped 4-1, with skipper Reece James sent off. Alexander Isak had Newcastle ahead before Raheem Sterling equalised. But then Jamaal Lascelles, Joelinton and Anthony Gordon all struck.

Pochettino said: “It was our worst game of the season. It was tough to be in the stands. We cannot complain about the result, we did not read the game from the beginning. We did not play how we should play, we showed a lack of intensity and energy. Even after we scored, at 1-1, it was a chance for us to force them to play deep, but it was so easy for Newcastle. That is why I am so upset with the performance.

“It is a young team, they need this type of situation to realise. We will go to the hotel, then train early tomorrow, no time off. We cannot blame the players, it is the team together. We need to understand the level we need to compete, and learn about this situation.

“There are many details, many things that build confidence and strength. We already know what is going on, and we will try to change the dynamic.”

  • ‘I’m embarrassed’ – Arteta rages after Newcastle defeat

‘I’m embarrassed’ – Arteta rages after Newcastle defeat

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta raged against Newcastle United’s winner at St James’ Park on Saturday.

Anthony Gordon’s scrambled goal was allowed to stand after three VAR checks.

“I have to be here now to say it is not acceptable,” Arteta said.

“We didn’t deserve to lose the match. We lose the match because of the clear and obvious decisions. It’s embarrassing. A disgrace. That’s what it is – a disgrace.

“You cannot imagine the amount of messages I got saying this cannot continue. I am wasting my time. We are wasting our time. I don’t want to be in the hands of people.”

The Spaniard continued: “It’s embarrassing what happened – how this goal stands, in the Premier League – this league we say is the best in the world. I’ve been 20 years in this country and now I feel ashamed. It’s a disgrace and there’s too much at stake here. We are trying to do incredible things and be at the highest level each week.

“The outcome is nowhere near the level this league needs to have. It’s not good enough. I feel embarrassed to be part of this.”

Arteta also said later: “It’s not a goal – it’s simple. For a goal to be allowed there are certain things prior to that that are not allowed in football – here and in China, in Japan, in Italy, in Portugal, and Spain. That’s what happens.”

  • I’m not going anywhere – Ten Hag

I’m not going anywhere – Ten Hag

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is not giving up on his future at the club.

The Dutch head coach is under immense pressure to deliver results with the Red Devils.

After his team were beaten 3-0 at home by Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup fourth round, Ten Hag was defiant.

“I’m a fighter,” Ten Hag stressed to reporters.

“And I know it’s not always going up and we have a lot of setbacks this season so far, but you also have to deal with it and it’s never an excuse.

“I have said before, when there are setbacks, the routines, the way of play are not similar, not the same, but even then you have to get the results in.

“Obviously, Sunday and tonight was far from that. We have to do things right, at a certain level, a minimum level to win games.

“I understand [the scrutiny]. When the results are not there then there is a logical process questioning that. I am confident I can do it. I have done it at all my clubs and also last year, I did it here as well.

“But at this moment, we are also in a bad place. I take responsibility for it. I see it as a challenge, I’m a fighter, I am in the fight and I have to make sure I share the responsibility with the players that we stick together, fight together and get better results in.”

“Everyone has seen, it’s below the standards you can expect from Manchester United,” Ten Hag admitted.

“It’s not good enough by far. We have to put things right and I take responsibility for it. It is my team and they are not performing. But I have to share it with my players but I am responsible.

“As a team, we are not good enough and whatever the reasons are, there is no space for excuses. We have to do things better, we have to raise our standards otherwise you never get the right levels and you never get the performance and you never get the result.

“The results are not there, it’s a process, the confidence goes down. Therefore, you are Manchester United and it’s expected that you can deal with that pressure, so it’s normal. Play football but they (the players) have to understand we do it together and everyone has to take responsibility for his own performance and the togetherness for the performance.

“What I mostly heard is they are backing us. We don’t deserve it in this moment, but they are backing us. They are behind us and we are pleased with that and we are in good times with them and now in bad times, I am happy that they are behind us.”

  • Tonali could play this weekend despite 10-month ban

Tonali could play this weekend despite 10-month ban

Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali could be involved in Saturday’s Premier League clash with Wolves despite being handed a 10-month ban.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) confirmed on Thursday that the 23-year-old had been suspended until next season after agreeing a plea bargain as part of an investigation into illegal betting activity.

However, Newcastle say they are yet to be officially informed of the ban, which is yet to be ratified by world governing body FIFA and, as it stands, the summer signing from AC Milan is due to travel to the Midlands on Friday afternoon with the rest of the squad.

Magpies head coach, Eddie Howe, said: “It’s a difficult one because we haven’t had official confirmation as a football club yet.

“We’ve heard the news, the statement, but we haven’t had anything from the Italian authorities at the moment, so we’re in limbo, really, waiting for that official confirmation to come through.”

Asked if there was a chance the Italy international could be involved at Molineux, Howe added: “Yes, I think there’s a high chance again that he could be available for us.

“I still think there are a few things that have to happen before the ban is imposed, so let’s see.”

The Italy international was also fined 20,000 euros (21,130 dollars) and will have to undergo eight months of therapy as well as carrying out a series of public appearances.

Tonali found himself at the centre of a probe during October’s international break into breaches of betting rules and was alleged to have wagered on games involving former clubs Brescia and Milan during his spells with them.

  • UCL: Dortmund shock Newcastle at St. James’ Park, PSG, City win

UCL: Dortmund shock Newcastle at St. James’ Park, PSG, City win

Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night defeated Newcastle away at Saint James Park in a thrilling UEFA Champions League encounter.

Felix Nmecha turned in Nico Schlotterbeck’s cross in the 45th minute for what, surprisingly, was the only goal in an end-to-end encounter.

Newcastle was handed a Champions League reality check by Borussia Dortmund. A 1-0 loss to the German team at a soggy St. James’ Park on Wednesday was in stark contrast to Newcastle’s euphoric 4-1 thrashing of Paris Saint-Germain three weeks ago.

Dortmund, which is in hot form after five straight wins in the German league, survived to join Newcastle on four points — two fewer than leader PSG.

Superstar forwards Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé were both on target Wednesday to help boost their teams’ chances of reaching the Champions League knockout stage.

Haaland scored twice in defending champion Manchester City’s 3-1 win at Young Boys in Group G, while Mbappé set Paris Saint-Germain on the way to a crucial 3-0 home victory over AC Milan in Group F.

That broke a scoring drought in the competition for Haaland, who has nine in as many Premier League matches this season. Mbappé has eight in eight Ligue 1 games and also netted in PSG’s Champions League opener.

City now just needs to beat the same opponent in two weeks’ time to book its place in the last 16.

Barcelona is in a similar situation after a 2-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk maintained a perfect start to its Champions League campaign too.

PSG now lead the group with Newcastle coming in second Dortmund come in third while AC Milan are rooted on the bottom of the group.

  • EPL: Newcastle thrash Palace, City beat Brighton 2-1, substitute Adebayo rescued Luton against Nottingham

EPL: Newcastle thrash Palace, City beat Brighton 2-1, substitute Adebayo rescued Luton against Nottingham

Two first half goals from forwards Julian Alvarez and Braut Erling Haaland ensured City go top of the Premier League on Saturday evening.

City had taken an early lead with a one-touch strike from Julian Alvarez, after a breathtaking run from Jeremy Doku, who frightened the life out of Brighton every time he got on the ball.

The Seagulls, however, rallied late in the game, and after Ansu Fati reduced the deficit, they started to scare City, with Kaoru Mitoma running Kyle Walker ragged.

Fati collects the ball and feeds Mitoma. The winger goes past Walker and cuts it back with Fati there to fire home.

A second Premier League goal for the Barcelona loanee.

City defender, Manuel Akanji got the marching order in the 98th minute of the encounter to reduce the home side to 10,

However, 10 man City held to their slim win against Brighton and Hobe Albion and returned to the top after few weeks away from it.

Elsewhere, Newcastle thrashed Cyrstal Palace 4-0 at Saint James Park.

The Magpies led by three at halftime after Murphy was joined by Anthony Gordon and Sean Longstaff on the scoresheet, with Murphy then cueing up Callum Wilson late for the game’s final goal.

Newcastle have four wins and a draw in its their last four outings and sit fifth with 16 points. The Magpies will finish the weekend no worse than sixth depending on the final score of Sunday’s Aston Villa vs West Ham affair.

However, at Kenilworth Road Nigerian born, Elijah Adebayo’s excellent late goal helped Luton come from two goals down to claim a confidence-boosting draw against Nottingham Forest.

The Hatters were trailing 2-0 until the 83rd minute when Forest failed to deal with a routine free-kick and Chiedozie Ogbene fired home the loose ball.

Earlier, Chris Wood had put Forest in front two minutes into the second half and added a second after 76 minutes to seemingly set them on course for victory before Luton’s stunning late fightback.
