Newcastle striker Isak out until after World Cup

Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak will not play again until after the Qatar World Cup finals after suffering an injury setback, manager Eddie Howe said on Tuesday.

The Swedish forward was signed on in a deal reported to be worth up to 60 million pounds (67.82 million dollars) from Real Sociedad in August.

He has made only three appearances because of a thigh injury.

“We don’t think we will see him again before the World Cup. He has had a setback on his thigh,” Howe told reporters ahead of Wednesday’s English Premier League (EPL) clash with Everton.

“It’s very frustrating for him. As a new player coming to a new league and new club, you want to make an impact and he did in the first few games.”

The 23-year-old Isak made an instant impact for Newcastle United, scoring on his debut against Liverpool and was also on target against Bournemouth but was injured while on international duty.

“It’s been frustrating because he did a lot of work to get fit. He’s desperate to make his mark here,” Howe said.

“If you are trying to look for a positive we will look for his injury to heal and we will get a mini pre-season to get him in peak physical condition.”

The World Cup begins on Nov. 20 in Qatar and concludes on Dec. 18 with the Premier League resuming on Dec. 26.

Newcastle United have lost only once in their opening 10 Premier League games, drawing six, and are sixth in the standings.

They own the Premier League’s best defensive record with only nine goals conceded.

Howe says an improved mentality has led to the vast improvement since he took charge nearly a year ago following the sacking of Steve Bruce.

“We have the mentality here that we want to defend as a team, right from the strikers filtering all the way back to the goalkeeper,” Howe said.

“We attack as a team as well. We try to be very brave and aggressive in all forms whether we are attacking or defending.

“We go for perfection and that is a difficult bar to hit but we are trying to get there.”

Newcastle could finish above Arsenal next season – Merson

Paul Merson has predicted Newcastle United might finish above Arsenal in the Premier League table next season.

Merson said this ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League final day fixture against Everton on Sunday.

There’s a huge doubt over Arsenal’s participation in the Champions League next season.

Mikel Arteta’s side threw away a four-point lead over rivals Tottenham Hotspur and are now trailing Spurs, who occupy the fourth spot by two points with just one game to go.

“Newcastle could actually finish above Arsenal next season based on what I saw the other night – I’m not saying they will, but I was flabbergasted by what I saw in that game,” Merson wrote in his DailyStar column.

“Every single player was a four out of ten in that game. I’ve never seen that before. Usually, you have a couple who do the business. But every single player just didn’t turn up,” he added.

“I was actually watching it wondering who finishes higher next season, Arsenal or Newcastle? The gulf was unreal. Only one team had nothing to play for in that game. But if you didn’t know, you’d think it was Arsenal, because they just didn’t turn up. I could not believe what I was watching.”

“And I guarantee you there will be players at Arsenal now saying: ‘I want to leave if we don’t get Champions League football.’ That’s what sickens me the most. But they had their chance to qualify and they melted!” He said.

  • EPL: They’re like rabbits – Alan Shearer slams Arsenal

EPL: They’re like rabbits – Alan Shearer slams Arsenal

Former England international, Alan Shearer, has slammed Arsenal for losing 2-0 against Newcastle on Monday night.

Arsenal went into the Premier League clash against Newcastle knowing they needed to win, as their rivals Tottenham Hotspur broke into the Premier League top four.

Mikel Arteta’s side trailed Spurs by two points and knew that anything but a victory would put their top-four hopes in jeopardy.

However, a Ben White own goal and a fabulous finish from Bruno Guimares did the damage to all but end Arsenal’s hope of securing Champions League football next season.

“What surprised me with the Arsenal team was, on the back of such a poor performance against Tottenham,” Shearer told Premier League Productions (via HITC).

“What you want and need is you need a game straight away. We want to get that out of our system. We all knew. Everyone all knew what the atmosphere was going to be like at St James’ Park tonight, so those players should’ve known, and Mikel Arteta would have known.

“I was really surprised; it looked as if it caught them by surprise. They were like a rabbit in the headlights. They did not know what hit them. Arsenal could not cope being put under pressure. That was the surprising thing. They never laid a glove on Newcastle in 95 minutes – they got worse (as the match went on).”

Roma manager Jose Mourinho is being linked with Premier League club Newcastle United.

According to Marca, despite the team’s success under Eddie Howe, Newcastle’s owners are considering Mourinho.

Newcastle’s Saudi owners are prepared to axe Howe if Mourinho is willing to make the move.

Mourinho has a contract at Roma to 2024 and like Howe has enjoyed some success this season, leading the club to the final of Europa Conference League.

Howe’s deal with the Magpies runs to 2023.

Transfer: Newcastle renew offer for Victor Osimhen

Premier League club, Newcastle United have made a new offer for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.

Newcastle failed with an attempt in January and received the same response from Napoli this week, reports Calciomercato.com.

While the size of the Toon’s offer was undisclosed, Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis is prepared to sell this summer for €100m.

Nigeria international Osimhen is also interesting Manchester United.

Osimhen has made 30 appearances for Napoli this season, scoring 17 goals and providing six assists.

His contract with the club runs until June 2025.

EPL: Christian Eriksen set for Brentford debut against Newcastle

Christian Eriksen should make his Brentford debut in Saturday’s English Premier League (EPL) match against Newcastle United.

The Denmark international has built up his match fitness in behind-closed-doors fixtures.

He is now in line to make a first competitive appearance since suffering a cardiac arrest on the pitch at Euro 2020 in June last year.

Bees striker Ivan Toney has recovered from a calf issue, while defenders Mathias Jorgensen (thigh) and Julian Jeanvier (knee) and midfielder Tariqe Fosu (thigh) all remain sidelined.

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe hopes to have striker Allan Saint-Maximin available for the trip to west London.

The Frenchman has been in Monaco this week for specialised and intense treatment on the calf injury.

It was an injury which kept him out of last weekend’s 1-1 draw at West Ham and the Magpies will make a late decision on him.

Winger Ryan Fraser has recovered from a hamstring problem and Javier Manquillo’s ankle injury is improving.

But fellow full-back Kieran Trippier (fractured metatarsal), midfielder Matt Ritchie (knee) and striker Callum Wilson (calf) are still out

EPL: Newcastle unbeaten run continues after West Ham draw

Newcastle continued their impressive resurgence under Eddie Howe with a valuable draw at West Ham that edged them five points clear of the Premier League relegation zone.

Howe’s side are unbeaten in the league since Christmas, despite this result bringing their recent three-game winning run to an end.

Craig Dawson headed the opener for West Ham from Aaron Cresswell’s enticing free-kick after goalkeeper Martin Dubravka had earlier tipped a Jarrod Bowen effort onto the crossbar.

But the visitors capitalised on a defensive lapse on the brink of half-time when Joe Willock guided a deft finish onto the far post and watched it creep narrowly over the line.

Newcastle remain 17th but are now five points clear of Norwich, while West Ham missed the chance to return to a Champions League place and stay fifth.

  • EPL club offer Super Eagles star £100,000-a-week deal

EPL club offer Super Eagles star £100,000-a-week deal

Premier League club Newcastle are ready to hand Super Eagles star, Moses Simon, a £100,000-a-week contract to join them in the summer.

According to OwnGoalNigeria, Newcastle have made Simon, who currently plays for Nantes in Ligue 1, their top priority ahead of next season.

The Super Eagles star will cost the Magpies around £20million in transfer fees.

But Newcastle are not deterred by the money involved in the deal, as they are very eager to bring in Simon.

Nantes will also be ready to do business, despite blocking Simon from moving to Leeds United in the January window.

The 26-year-old, who impressed for Nigeria at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, has scored twice and provided six assists in the French topflight this season.

  • Shelvey gives Newcastle much-needed win at Leeds

Shelvey gives Newcastle much-needed win at Leeds

Newcastle earned a massive victory at Leeds in their fight to avoid relegation thanks to Jonjo Shelvey’s 20-yard free-kick.

Eddie Howe’s side had only won once all season prior to this energetic and tempestuous encounter where both sides struggled to make the most of first-half chances.

But after Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka saved Dan James’ point-blank shot and Illan Meslier palmed Shelvey’s volley away, the visitors finally found a breakthrough.

The 75th-minute goal came from a brilliant run by substitute Javier Manquillo, who was brought down on the edge of the box.

Shelvey stepped up and fired past Meslier, who perhaps should have done better, given the ball went in on his side of the goal.

Leeds had earlier wasted a great chance through Jack Harrison, whose goal-bound shot was well-blocked by Fabian Schar.

It proved a turning point as Newcastle held on, despite dropping 21 points from winning positions already this season.

After Norwich’s win over Watford, Howe’s side failed to exit the bottom three, but such a victory could prove transformative to their relegation hopes ahead of a two-week break where the team will travel to Saudi Arabia for a training trip.

For Leeds, it ended successive league victories and they paid for their profligacy in the absence of injured striker Patrick Bamford.

  • Eden Hazard makes decision on Newcastle move

Eden Hazard makes decision on Newcastle move

Real Madrid winger Eden Hazard is not interested in joining Newcastle United.

The Belgian has been linked with a move back to the Premier League and to the big spending Magpies.

However, El Nacional in Spain suggests the 31-year-old attacking midfielder does not see Newcastle as an option.

If he is to leave Real, he wants to join a team that is a “big player” in European football.

Chelsea may be interested in bringing Hazard back to Stamford Bridge in the summer, and such an option may appeal to the playmaker as well.
