EPL: We can’t buy ourselves out of trouble – Newcastle coach

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has played down the prospect of a big spending January.

Howe celebrated his 44th birthday on Monday by preparing his team for Tuesday night’s clash with Norwich in the hope that they can win a Premier League game for the first time this season at the 14th attempt with the club sitting six points adrift of safety at the foot of the table.

The Magpies’ new Saudi-backed owners have indicated they will invest significantly in the squad during their tenure, but Howe knows he cannot rely on spending power alone to preserve their top-flight status.

Asked if he had been assured of backing in the winter transfer window, he replied: “I can’t make any promises on that, but I can promise that the people above me, the owners, will support the team and support me in trying to achieve what we need. That’s all I can say at this time.

“It would be foolish of me to make rash promises or statements. My priority at the moment is to get the best out of the players we have.”

Saka, Martinelli earn Arsenal comfortable win over Newcastle

Arsenal eventually broke Newcastle United down to leave Eddie Howe’s side bottom of the Premier League without a win.

Howe, in the Magpies dugout for the first time after missing last weekend’s 3-3 draw with Brentford because of Covid, set up a team to try to contain Arsenal and eke out a point.

It appeared as if the strategy might be working until Bukayo Saka slotted home from Nuno Tavares’ through ball in the second half.

Saka went off injured and his replacement Gabriel Martinelli scored with his second touch, a wonderful volley from Takehiro Tomiyasu’s clipped pass over the top.

“He wasn’t comfortable. He felt something,” said Gunners boss Mikel Arteta of Saka as they await news of what is wrong with the England international.

Both sides had hit the woodwork in an otherwise uninspiring first half.

Jonjo Shelvey’s long-range drive was tipped on to the bar by the diving Aaron Ramsdale – and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hit a sitter off the post from six yards out.

Arsenal remain fifth in the Premier League, while Newcastle are five points adrift of safety with just over a third of the season gone.

Newcastle go bottom of EPL after six-goal thriller

Newcastle dropped to the bottom of the Premier League after an entertaining draw with Brentford, with Eddie Howe absent for his first game in charge.

The new head coach was forced to watch the game from his hotel room after testing positive for coronavirus on Friday, with assistant Jason Tindall taking charge from the sidelines.

But, as he settles into his new role a month after the club’s Saudi Arabian-backed takeover, he will have seen a game to give him room for encouragement while also illustrating the size of his task to keep Newcastle in the top flight.

With the home fans signing Howe’s name from the first minute, Newcastle took an early lead when Jamaal Lascelles nodded in from Matt Ritchie’s corner.

But the lead only lasted 75 seconds as Ivan Toney took advantage of Karl Darlow’s mistake to fire in low against his former employers and celebrate in front of the Gallowgate End.

The 25-year-old, who was sold by Newcastle to Peterborough in 2018 after several loan spells, was twice close to scoring again, being caught slightly offside and then having a goalbound shot cleared off the line by Fabian Schar.

But Thomas Frank’s impressive team took the lead after 31 minutes when Sergi Canos’ back-post cross found fellow wing-back Rico Henry, who stabbed a shot past Darlow.

Eight minutes later, Joelinton brought the scores level again, curling into the bottom corner following the lively Allan Saint-Maximin’s cross, for his first goal of the season.

In a thrilling encounter, Brentford went ahead once more when substitute Frank Onyeka’s shot was deflected past Darlow via Lascelles, but Saint-Maximin rescued a point when he crashed in at the back post following a flowing move.

Despite the draw, Newcastle continued their worst start to a league campaign, falling to 20th after Norwich earned their second win of the season, while Thomas Frank’s Brentford ended a run of four top-flight defeats.

Ex-Chelsea chief Emenalo to become Newcastle director

Former Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo is confident that he will be named as Newcastle United sporting director.

Emenalo was credited for star signings Kevin De Bruyne, Mohamed Salah, N’Golo Kante and Eden Hazard at Stamford Bridge.

He also brought in Juan Mata, Thibaut Courtois and Cesc Fabregas during his stint in west London.

Liverpool’s Michael Edwards is a dream target on Newcastle’s shortlist but has other interest.

Adviser Frank McParland may be ruled out as he has links to Phil Foden’s agents, says The Sun.

Hazard would love playing for Howe at Newcastle – Wilshere

Former Arsenal star Jack Wilshere is convinced Real Madrid attacker Eden Hazard would be happy to join Newcastle United.

Wilshere worked with new Toon manager Eddie Howe during his season-long loan spell at Bournemouth five years ago.

Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: “He [Howe] was great with me, because it was tough for me there because I was coming from a big club [Arsenal].

“I stepped into a group that had been together since they were in League One, they were all friends.

“They were all great with me, but Eddie made sure they were. He was great with me.

“Eden Hazard is another level, but I think Eden would love playing for a manager like Eddie Howe [at Newcastle]. He’s the type of manager you want to play for.”

EPL: Newcastle appoint Eddie Howe as new manager

Premier League club Newcastle have appointed Eddie Howe as their new manager on a two-and-a-half year deal until 2024.

The Magpies dismissed Steve Bruce on October 20 after his 1,000th game in club management, with Graeme Jones in caretaker charge since.

“This is a wonderful opportunity, but there is also a lot of work ahead of us,” Howe told Newcastle’s website.

He takes over with Newcastle 19th in the table, five points from safety after 11 games.

Howe watched Newcastle’s 1-1 league draw at Brighton on Saturday from the stands.

  • Emery rejects Newcastle to stay at Villarreal

Emery rejects Newcastle to stay at Villarreal

Unai Emery said on Wednesday he has decided to stay at Villarreal, despite interest from Newcastle to appoint him as their new coach.

Emery appeared open to a return to the Premier League on Tuesday night, when he admitted there had been “interest” from Newcastle. He added that if an offer arrived, he would speak to Villarreal president Fernando Roig.

But the former Arsenal manager ruled out the possibility on Wednesday, confirming he will remain at Villarreal, where he is in his second season on the back of winning the Europa League last term.

“No matter how much noise there was yesterday in another country, within the club there was transparency and loyalty with the Roig family and with my staff, which is the most it can be and for me the most important thing,” Emery said in a statement.

“Villarreal is my home and I am 100 per cent committed. I am honestly grateful for the interest of a great club but even more grateful to be here and that is why I communicated to Fernando Roig my decision to continue being part of this project because of the commitment and respect that I have from the club and from my players, which is mutual.

“I want to thank the fans for the support they have always shown me. On Sunday we have a very important game and I hope that all together we can get the victory. See you at la Ceramica.”

Villarreal’s 2-0 victory over Young Boys on Tuesday put them in sight of the Champions League last 16.

They are level on points with Manchester United and two ahead of Atalanta in Group F.

Yet the team’s form in La Liga has been less impressive, with two wins from their opening 11 games this season leaving Villarreal 13th in the table.

Newcastle have enormous financial backing following the club’s Saudi-backed takeover and are looking for a replacement for Steve Bruce, whom they sacked as coach last month.

The team sit 19th in the Premier League and are yet to win this season.

Unai Emery emerging as new favourite for Newcastle job

Villarreal coach Unai Emery is emerging as new favourite for the Newcastle United job.

Sport1 says former Arsenal boss Emery has become the new favourite to take the job on Tyneside.

Emery is under contract with Villarreal, who currently sit 13th in LaLiga, until 2023 but Newcastle, under their new mega-rich ownership, are reportedly prepared to pay a hefty fee to lure him back to the Premier League.

The 49-year-old has already held top-flight positions, including PSG and Arsenal, with his greatest success coming at Sevilla where he won three Europa Leagues.

Former Bundesliga manager Lucien Favre was also a name said to be on the table but the ex-Dortmund boss reportedly will not take the position.

  • Tuchel puts Saul on notice ahead of Newcastle clash

Tuchel puts Saul on notice ahead of Newcastle clash

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has put Saul Niguez on notice ahead of going to Newcastle United.

Tuchel was discussing how he’ll cover injury victim Mateo Kovacic.

He said, “I miss Mateo a lot, he has been a key factor till now and it’s really sad to see him get injured in the very last second of the training on Thursday.

“But actually in midfield, and hopefully it stays like this, we have still Jorginho, N’Golo, Ruben who comes back after only two or three days out, and we have Saul, so there’s still a lot of quality we can use to compensate.

“You cannot predict that you will lose three key offensive players at the same time, this is quite unlucky, and you cannot have a squad with five, six or seven key players and three of them constantly waiting for another three to get injured. This does not exist in real life.

“I’m happy with the guys who will be on the pitch today, they earned our trust. We arrived at this group of 18 plus goalkeepers and we are capable of pushing the limits so high that we can win consecutive games. There is no doubt about it.

“There’s a bit of a stretch at the moment, the group is tested, and we want to prove we are a strong group and can compensate for situations like this.”

  • EPL: Newcastle plan £11m-a-year offer for Ajax coach

EPL: Newcastle plan £11m-a-year offer for Ajax coach

Premier League club Newcastle United are drawing up a massive contract offer for Ajax coach Erik ten Hag.

The Daily Mail says Newcastle would be willing to pay the highly-rated boss a salary of £6million after tax – totalling a gross wage of just over £11m.

The eye-watering package would put Ten Hag behind Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp, who earn £20million and £15m a year respectively, in the order of English football’s best paid bosses.

However, Ten Hag is said to have reservations over leaving Ajax for the new project at Newcastle. The 51-year-old has established a reputation as one of Europe’s best emerging coaches and turned down the opportunity of replacing Jose Mourinho at Tottenham during the close season.

Indeed, leaving Ajax for Newcastle, particularly given their current Premier League predicament, would represent a significant risk for a coach whose profile is on an upward trajectory.
