BREAKING: FG increases pump price of petrol

The federal government has announced an increase in the pump price of petrol, saying the increase was a result of prevailing market fundamentals in the month of June.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) made this known in a circular on Wednesday, advising all marketers to operate a new price band of N140.80 to N143.80 per litre.

Recall that the regulatory agency had on May 31, 2020 announced a price band of N121.50 to N123.50 per litre for the product.

PPRA, announcing the new price band for petrol for the month of July, said the decision was reached after considering marketers’ realistic operating costs.

“Please recall the provision for the establishment of a monthly price band within which Petroleum Marketers are expected to sell PMS at the retail stations, based on the existing price regime.

“After a review of the prevailing market fundamentals in the month of June and considering Marketers’ realistic operating costs, as much as practicable, we wish to advise a new PMS pump price band of N140.80 – N143.80/Litre, for the month of July, 2020.

“Kindly note that the Ex-depot for collection includes the statutory charges of Bridging Fund, Marine Transport Average, National Transport Allowance (NTA) and the Administrative charge.

“All Marketers are advised to operate within the indicative prices as advised by the PPPR,” reads the circular signed by Abdulkadir Saidu, Executive Secretary, PPPRA.

  • MTN rolls out commercial 5G network

MTN rolls out commercial 5G network

MTN has launched its commercial 5G network from it’s birthplace of South Africa, providing access to 100 sites across the country.

The launch, which happened officially on Tuesday, is coming on the heels of the government’s allocation of temporary 5G spectrum to the telecoms company.

The launch culminated from the allocation of the temporary spectrum to MTN by the government and an extensive 5G trials and testing in the country.

“Today, from MTN’s birthplace of South Africa, we are stepping up our digital revolution with the next generation of telecommunication technology, demonstrating to all South Africans that 5G is no longer just an idea – it is here, it works and it has the capacity to bring about exponential improvements to our economy, and to the lives of the people we serve,” says MTN SA’s CEO, Godfrey Motsa.

The 5G network from MTN will serve 100 sites, covering areas of Johannesburg and Cape Town, as well as Bloemfontein and Port Elizabeth.

According to Chief Technology and Information Officer of MTN SA, Giovanni Chiarelli, the telco has been developing innovation around 5G for the past two years.

“For the past two years we have been actively innovating around the potential of 5G, using different bands and various vendors and across different platforms and devices, to ensure MTN South Africa can maintain leadership in 5G, as we have been able to maintain our leadership in 4G.

“Our 5G strategy has been years in the making and we are confident that we have built a strong foundation to grow and support our 5G ecosystem to deliver an exceptional experience for our customers,” he said.

One of the key innovations driving the broad rollout by MTN has been a strategic approach to Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS), as these deployments overcome the challenges of lack of dedicated 5G spectrum.

MTN will deliver 5G connectivity on four different spectral bands: 3.5 GHz at 58 sites; 2100MHz and 1800MHz at 35 sites; 700MHz at 5 sites and 28GHz at 3 sites.

Motsa says MTN’s rollout of its 5G network will be ramped up to even more sites once government allocates permanent spectrum through the planned auction later this year.

“We are extremely encouraged by the release of the temporary spectrum. Our call to the regulator and government is to release permanent 4G and 5G spectrum as a matter of urgency, so that we can fuel the digital revolution our nation needs to bridge the digital divide that currently deepens the gap between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have-nots’,” says Motsa.

“The biggest telecommunication opportunities for the masses of South Africans, are for operators to deliver ultra-fast broadband to townships that continue to be significantly underserved by fixed line fibre services. If the spectrum is made available, the coverage is a given and the affordability can be achieved. Although we are starting relatively small our growth plans for our 5G ecosystem are huge,” Motsa said.

5G, the new generation technology as believed, will unlock the full capabilities of next generation services such as virtual and augmented reality, ultra-high definition video streaming, artificial intelligence, robotics, automated cars, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

  • Senate urges Buhari-led govt to subsidise electricity for Nigerians

The Senate on Tuesday explained why the Federal Government should subsidise electricity for Nigerians.

The electricity distribution companies of Nigeria had on Monday told the National Assembly leadership that the only condition to halt tariff hike was for the Federal Government to bear the difference between the current tariff and the proposed one.

Addressing journalists on behalf of the red chamber on Tuesday, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Power, Senator Gabriel Suswam, and his counterpart in the Media and Public Affairs, Dr. Ajibola Basiru, said increasing the tariff at the moment would be counterproductive.

The upper chamber said the best thing for the Federal Government to do now was to take the challenge of subsiding power by paying DISCOs the balance of the current tariff and the proposed one.

Suswan specifically said there was nowhere in the world where such gestures were not being extended to the citizenry.

He said, “Nowhere in the world that power is not subsidised especially in a developing economy because there are genuine people, who, because of their income, are unable to pay what is called a cost-reflective tariff.

“Nigerians are heavily burdened because of COVID-19. The economy has contracted by 3.2%, that’s a lot.

“So it makes you and I to attend to some of our social problems. So, is the government preferring to add a burden or lessen it?

“The president has been doing well, he has spent so much money, and what we expect is that the spending will gradually reduce or diminish as the power sector becomes more efficient.

“There are two things, one is to make it more efficient and second, the government will back out just like they have done in the oil sector where subsidy has been completely removed.

“Even at that, the government is reducing the pump price. So, should they, in the same vein, increase tariff? It doesn’t make sense.

“I think the executive will agree, even though it’s going to come at a cost. But what cost is more than lessening the burden on the people?”

  • Just in: Keyamo shuns NASS disapproval, proceeds with N52bn recruitment plan for 774,000 Nigerians

The Minister of State for Labour, Employment and Productivity, Barr. Festus Keyamo, has vowed to proceed with the implementation of N52 billion plan for the recruitment of 774,000 Nigerians, despite the disapproval from National Assembly.

Keyamo made the disclosure after the National Assembly’s Joint Committees ordered suspension of the Selection Committees nationwide until the NASS decides how the programme should be run and who should be in those Committees.

Earlier on Tuesday, Keyamo had engaged members of the National Assembly in a shouting match over the National Directorate of Employment recruitment exercise.

    Watch video:

    Keyamo reaction in full:

Today, in obedience to their invitation, I appeared before the Joint Committees on Labour of both the Senate and the House. The Distinguished Senators and Honourable Members sought to be briefed on the implementation of the Special Public Works Programme so far.

However, there was a misunderstanding between us when they questioned why I did not privately submit the program to them for vetting before taking certain steps. They suggested that they ought to have an input on how the programme should be implemented. In other words, they sought to control the programme as to who gets what, where and how.

However, I insisted that I could not surrender the programme to their control since their powers under the constitution does not extend to that. They insisted on a closed door session.

At this point, I remarked that it was only fair for me to respond to their position before the press, since their own position was also made public. In any case, I remarked that the Nigerian people deserve to know the details of the execution of this all-important programme.

I was then asked to apologize for insisting on a public interaction and I said there was nothing to apologize about, because their powers to expose corruption provided for in section 88 of the Constitution cannot be exercised in private. As such, there was no need to apologize by insisting on a Constitutional provision. Even their Rules that may provide for private hearings on public matters cannot override the provisions of the Constitution. I was then permitted to leave. I took a bow and left. I NEVER walked out on the respected Committees as they may want to bend the narrative.

After I left, I understand that the Joint Committees purportedly suspended the work of the Selection Committees nationwide until they decide how the programme should be run and who should be in those Committees. My opinion is that it is tantamount to challenging the powers of Mr. President.

I regret to say that their powers under section 88 of the 1999 Constitution is only limited to investigations, but NOT TO GIVE ANY DIRECTIVE TO THE EXECUTIVE.

A Committee or Committees of both Houses do not even have powers to pass binding Resolutions. They can only make recommendations to Plenary. In this case, even Plenary CANNOT give DIRECTIVES to the Executive.

All my life, I have fought for good governance and constitutional democracy. I will not come into government and be intimidated to abandon those principles. I will rather leave this assignment, if Mr. President so directs than compromise the jobs meant for ordinary Nigerians who have no Godfathers or who are not affiliated to any political party.

I therefore, respectfully further direct all the Committees set up nationwide made up of CAN, NSCIA, NURTW, Market Women, CSOS, Youth Organisations, respected traditional rulers, etc to proceed with their work unhindered. Only Mr. President can stop their work.

  • NASS tackles Keyamo, NDE over N52bn budgeted for recruitment of 774,000 Nigerians

The Minister of State for Labour, Employment and Productivity, Mr Festus Keyamo, tackled members of the National Assembly on Tuesday over the National Directorate of Employment recruitment exercise.

There was mil drama after the Director-General of the NDE, Mr. Nasiru Ladan, could not defend the N52 billion budgeted for the recruitment of 774,000 Nigerians under the NDE.

The minister said his ministry was asked to supervise the recruitments by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd). But the federal lawmakers disagreed with Keyamo.

    Background

Recall That TheNEwsGuru (TNG) had earlier reported that Keyamo accused some political leaders for trying to hijack the 774,000 Special Public Works Programme recently approved by president Muhammadu Buhari from him.

The Minister disclosed this while speaking in Abuja yesterday at the inauguration of state selection committees of the federal government’s public works programme.

He said the 20-member Committees in 36 States and the FCT will select the 1000 persons per LGA that would be engaged by the FG in the Special Public Works Programme.

Mr Keyamo however warned the state chairmen of the committees not to compromise on the objective of the initiative which aimed at giving the opportunity to the vulnerable people.

He assured the people that nobody will stop him from doing the right thing and that nobody will take the job from him except President Buhari who appointed him.

According to Keyamo, “There have been attempts at blackmailing me in this particular programme too to make us also yield to political leaders and we have said no – not while I am here.

“I have a pedigree, I have a background, I have where I am coming from. Before I came into public office, I have a pedigree and what I stand for.

“Except Mr. President, who appointed me stops me, and who gave me the opportunity and rare privilege to drive this programme, except he stops me, no other political leader or person can stop me. I am answerable only to Mr. President,” he said.

  • How to get iOS 14 before others

Apple recently unveiled its latest operating system, the iOS 14, but it won’t be available likely until September.

The iOS 14 allows users to put widgets on the home screen for the first time; plus other mouthwatering features.

There are two ways to get the newly unveiled iOS 14, and start feeling the groove of the new features, before others.

You either get it earlier by signing up for the Apple’s beta programmes or you get it way earlier by signing up for Apple’s developer programme.

To get the iOS 14 through the beta programmes, you would have to wait till mid-July, but you will have the OS immediately if you use the developer programme option.

To be eligible you need to go to Apple’s beta software programme page and sign up – all you need to do so is a valid Apple ID (iCloud accounts qualify).

Before you download the beta iOS 14, it is advisable you do a backup of your device; just in case things go awry.

To get started, you first need to head to the enrolment page here, and thereafter, download the iOS 14 beta profile to your phone here.

The next thing to do is manually install the iOS 14 profile on your phone by heading to Settings > General > Profile, and selecting the Profile Downloaded (a new option which should appear) and tapping the profile selected.

Stay on your settings but scroll down to software update, which should give you the option to download iOS 14. It is a 5GB update, so will take some time. Plug your phone to a charging point to make sure it doesn’t die while updating.

Once the update is complete, restart the phone and you should find it running the new iOS 14. Easy, right?

The iPhone 12, 12 Max, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max to be released later in the year will all come with iOS 14 pre installed.

However, iPhone 6s & 6s Plus, iPhone SE (2016), iPhone 7 & 7 Plus, iPhone 8 & 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XR, iPhone XS & XS Max, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro & 11 Pro Max and iPhone SE (2020) are all compatible with the new iOS.
