  • Gov. Makinde lacks good upbringing as a Yoruba son, says Ajimobi’s aide

Gov. Makinde lacks good upbringing as a Yoruba son, says Ajimobi’s aide

Bolaji Tunji, spokesman to late Sen. Abiola Ajimobi on Monday lambasted Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde for allegedly failing to honour his predecessor.

Ajimobi’s aide described Makinde as a Yoruba son who lacks a good upbringing ethos.

Recall that TNG reported how Florence, wife of the deceased politician had earlier expressed similar displeasure at the attitude of the Makinde-led administration to her family since the passage of her husband, saying the body language of the government was uncomplimentary.

In a series of posts on his official Facebook page, Bolaji Tunji, also made revelations to buttress his points of labeling Makinde as ill-mannered, one of which included a letter written by late Ajimobi to condole with Makinde-led government when he lost his Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Kehinde Ayoola.

His words: “Any attempt to spin falsehood against the Ajimobi family will not fly. We know what we know. If as you claimed that you could not get through by calls what stops you from sending a text. That would exonerate you. No one should play politics here. Flags at half-mast for a day?… After 8 years of service. Even for each of the terms would give you two days. It is the least you could have done. So what stopped an obituary advert in the newspaper, or you could not get in touch with the newspapers too? Foolish, irrational excuse.

“Those excuses will not fly, you cannot now start to whitewash what is not. We have always known that the ethos of Omoluwabi is seriously lacking. Yoruba ki fi ku yo ‘yan (Yoruba’s don’t mock the bereaved). Not coming from a younger person. A major defect in upbringing. Gloves are off.

  • BREAKING: Court strikes out certificate forgery suit against Obaseki

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday struck out a suit seeking the disqualification of Governor Godwin Obaseki from contesting the forthcoming governorship election in the state for allegedly forging his university certificate.

The suit was filed on May 29, 2020, by Edobor Williams, Ugesia Godwin and Amedu Anakhu, ahead of the governorship election scheduled to hold in Edo State on September 19.

Joined as respondents in the suit were the governors’ party, the All Progressives Congress, the Inspector-General of Police and Obaseki himself.

But Justice Anwuli Chikere struck out the suit on Monday as neither the plaintiffs’ lawyers nor the defendants’ were present in court.

The plaintiffs alleged in the suit marked, FHC/ABJ/CS/553/2020, that the University of Ibadan certificate which he attached to his Form CF.001 which he submitted to INEC for his first term election in 2016 was forged.

They argued that the governor’s educational information contained in Part C of the Form CF 001 which he submitted to INEC on July 12, 2016 and the first degree certificate of Bachelor of Arts in Classical Studies, said to have been obtained from the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, was forged.

  • ASUU President states position on reopening of schools

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday kicked against the reopening of schools by the Federal Government due to the COVID-19 pandemic currently ravaging the country.

Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, ASUU National President, who spoke in Ota, Ogun State, said, the Federal Government needed to address the challenges of education sector before it can talk of reopening schools.

He urged the Federal Government to provide ideal environment and should take the lead by meeting the conditions spelt out by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) before reopening schools.

“The Federal Government must lead and show the ways by meeting the conditions for reopening of schools before any school can be allowed to open, because COVID-19 pandemic is a health challenge.

“When it comes to public health, it is something that should not be left in the hands of individual, but the Federal Government must take the lead,’’ he told NAN.

The ASUU president listed the conditions spelt out by NCDC to include: provision of materials for regular washing of hands, face mask, isolations centres, space for social distancing and hands sanitiser.

Ogunyemi said that many of the schools do not have financial capacities to meet those conditions and requirements for reopening of schools.

“It is suicidal to reopen schools now, if the Federal Government itself could not meet the conditions spelt out by NCDC and World Health Organisation (WHO).

“The nation will expose the innocent children to risks which is avoidable,” he said.

Ogunyemi noted that how many of these schools could afford to provide hand sanitiser, saying that many of them do not even have running water, not to talk of having facility for washing hands.

He added that many schools do not have enough spaces to promote physical distancing.

The ASUU president said that putting all these requirements needed together, to reopen schools in the country now would run to millions of Naira, which most schools could not afford.

Ogunyemi appealed to the Federal Government to provide the running funds for the principals and head teachers so that they could provide some of these facilities in their schools.

He further said that inadequate funds by many parents would hinder them from providing some of these amenities needed for reopening of schools.

Ogunyemi said that the Federal Government needed to tell Nigerians the steps they intended to take in reopening schools.

The ASUU leader said that for government not to tell people their minds was like running away from “our shadow” which would later hunt the country.

  • New music video smashes YouTube’s viewing record

Blackpink’s newly released “How You Like That” music video has smashed YouTube’s 24-hour viewing record.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the newly released music video also became the fastest video to reach 100 million views.

According to a report, the music video had 82.4 million views in the first 24 hours of release on YouTube. It was the No. 1 trending video on the platform.

The view count topped the previous record-holders: BTS’ “Boy With Luv” featuring Halsey that amassed 74.6 million views in the initial one-day period in April 2019, per YouTube.

The music video featuring Blackpink’s Jisoo, Jennie, Rose, and Lisa, became the fastest video in YouTube history to hit 100 million views, achieving the feat in just 1.5 days, compared to the 1.6 days taken by BTS’ Boy With Luv to reach 100 million views.

The 3-minute track, crafted for the group’s global fanbase, combines lyrics in both Korean and English.

Blackpink has reclaimed the 24-hour views title on YouTube from BTS after previously setting that high-water mark in April 2019 with “Kill This Love” (56.7 million views in its first 24 hours) and topped Ariana Grande’s “thank u, next.”

Over time, as a measure of overnight popularity, the number of YouTube views in the first 24 hours of release has become a key data point for bragging rights and promotion.

Note that the official view count for Blackpink’s How You Like That as tabulated by YouTube may be different.

Last year in September, YouTube changed its methodology for YouTube Music Charts to no longer count paid advertising views in 24-hour tallies – an effort to best reflect authentic fan engagement.

Barca plan to sack coach at the end of the season

La Liga giant Barcelona are prepared to sack Quique Setien as manager unless results drastically improve and they win the Liga title or Champions League this season, Goal reports.

The veteran coach, who only took the Camp Nou job in January as replacement for Ernesto Valverde, has lost the confidence of the Barca dressing room, while the club’s board are also unhappy with recent performances.

Unless Barca’s displays for the remainder of the 2019-20 campaign have a significant upswing, it is understood that it is inevitable Setien will leave his post in the summer.

The affected customers had asked the bank to refund the charges to them, which the lender obliged.

In a statement, the bank said it decided to remit these funds via the Central Bank of Nigeria to the Federal Government on behalf of the affected customers because of the lateness in debiting the customers’ accounts for the charge.

  • Democrats slam Trump as White House downplays spike in virus cases

Democrats slam Trump as White House downplays spike in virus cases

The number of coronavirus cases continued to spike across much of the U.S. on Sunday as the White House downplayed the severity of new outbreaks and sought to deflect responsibility on to local authorities.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence blamed the rising infection rate on expanded testing and criticised the media’s continued focus on rising case numbers.

“What the media doesn’t focus on at all is because of the sacrifices the American people made… to slow the spread and the good common sense measures they continue to do, we’ve continued to see fatalities decline,” Pence said in an interview broadcast on CBS on Sunday.

He noted that many new cases in hotspots Florida and Texas were among people below the age of 35, and claimed this posed a lower mortality risk.

When pressed on a national response, Pence said local authorities were best placed to handle the situation.

Democrats meanwhile accused the Republican administration of ignoring a looming crisis, as health experts warned the situation could soon spiral out of control, with tens of thousands of new cases reported each day.

“It’s time for this administration to take this seriously,” Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, a top Democrat, told broadcaster ABC. We have the worst record of any country in the world and the president says we are making progress,” she added.

More than a dozen states have serious new outbreaks, with some regions seeing caseloads increase by 50 per cent. The U.S. last week broke its own record for new cases.

  • Trump eats humble pie after posting video with ‘white power’ slogan

Trump eats humble pie after posting video with ‘white power’ slogan

U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted and then deleted a video in which his supporters could be heard repeating a “white power” slogan, in the latest instance in which the president was accused of inflaming racial tensions.

The phrase is often used by far-right white nationalists and prompted a backlash from within the president’s own Republican Party.

The tweet came as the country is going through an intense national conversation about race and discrimination, in the wake of police violence and the death of George Floyd.

There have been protests around the country for weeks under the Black Lives Matter banner. The video shows Trump supporters shouting the slogans.

Trump attached a comment saying: “Thank you to the great people of The Villages,” referring to a retirement community in Florida where the scene was filmed.

Senator Tim Scott, the only black Republican member of the Senate, was quick to denounce the president.

“He should not have retweeted it and he should just take it down. The entire thing was offensive,” Scott said on CNN.

The White House later explained the deletion of the tweet, which had been up for nearly four hours, saying the president was unaware of the audio content.

“President Trump is a big fan of The Villages. He did not hear the one statement made on the video. What he did see was tremendous enthusiasm from his many supporters,” White House spokesman Judd Deere said in a brief statement.

The president has been accused of worsening racial tensions in the country over the course of his time in the White House, while failing to promote a reconciliation programme.

In recent weeks he pushed for a tough crackdown against the sometimes violent protests against injustice and police brutality.
