Police break silence on Kaduna market attack, confirm 7 died

Kaduna State Police Command has confirmed that seven persons were killed and five others injured in Maro village, a border community between Kajuru and Kachia Local Government Area of the state.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports there was palpable tension in Kaduna States after some armed men, suspected to be Boko Haram terrorists attacked a market, sources confirmed after President Muhammadu Buhari visited Maiduguri, capital city of Borno.

Confirming the incidence days after, the Command Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Jalige in a statement said the attack occurred on Wednesday at about 7:15pm.

“The armed men entered the village market in a vehicle and started shooting sporadically and in the process shot some people.

“On receipt of the information, DPO Kajuru and Kachia immediately mobilised patrol teams to the area to restore normalcy, but unfortunately seven persons were found dead and five were injured.”

According to Jalige, both the dead and injured victims were evacuated by the police to Kachia general hospital.

“The dead bodies have been deposited in the mortuary while the injured ones are currently receiving treatment at the same hospital,” he stated.

Jalige said normalcy had since been restored in the area while investigation and manhunt of the fleeing bandits was ongoing.

He assured that perpetrators of the barbaric act would be caught and made to face justice.

Jalige added that the command was deeply saddened by the incident and had already beefed up security in the area to ensure no further break down of law and order.

“The command calls on the general public to promptly report any suspicious activities or persons to the nearest security agencies with a view to proactively prevent re-occurrence of such dastardly acts against law abiding citizens of the state, ” he said.

  • Phones, electronic devices hold clues to crash of Bryant helicopter

Transportation Safety Board, on Friday are turning to the travelers’ personal electronics
for potential answers with no black box recorder aboard the helicopter that crashed on January in Calabasas, killing Kobe Bryant
and eight others, investigators with the National.

Investigators hoped the passengers’ cellphones and the pilot’s iPad could help them better understand the chaotic last moments
of the flight before the chopper slammed into a hillside in foggy conditions.

Experts said the helicopter was flying low enough that the activities of the electronics were likely captured by cellphone towers.

The pilot of the Sikorsky S-76B, Ara Zobayan, made his last communication with air traffic control as he climbed to 2,300 feet
heading toward Camarillo in heavy clouds on Jan. 26.

Investigators are seeking to reconstruct what led him to suddenly bank left and descend rapidly just before the crash.

The NTSB is increasingly using personal electronics to help understand aviation disasters, and collecting the devices has become
    part of investigative protocol.

According to NTSB member, Jennifer Homendy, shortly after the crash, NTSB immediately swung into action looking for electronic
    devices, as we always do.

“We were able to recover an iPad and a cellphone. In the days that followed, investigators recovered additional personal devices
and determined that the iPad belonged to Zobayan.

The NTSB spokesman Keith Holloway, said though, it could be a while, before ascertaining whether there was recoverable data
    on the devices.

Investigators will also examine any potential communications from those devices during the flight from John Wayne Airport
in Orange County, where the helicopter took off from.

Meanwhile, the group were heading to Bryant’s Mamba Academy in Thousand Oaks for a basketball game.

According to coroner’s reports, when the chopper went down about 40 minutes later, everyone on board died.

They include: Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, Mamba coach Christina Mauser, player Payton Chester and her mother,
Sarah Chester, player Alyssa Altobelli and her parents, John and Keri Altobelli, and Zobayan.

The helicopter had neither a cockpit voice recorder nor a flight data recorder, better known as a black box, for the NTSB to
analyse. However, Federal Aviation Administration regulations did not require the chopper to have such recorders.

But the pilot did have an app loaded on his iPad that allows a pilot to plan a flight and check on weather, terrain, position and
potential hazards in real time from the cockpit.

The ForeFlight app can provide in-flight alerts of changing conditions, and it monitors GPS, speed and other dynamics of the aircraft.

The NTSB, however, said it was unclear whether Zobayan was using the iPad because of the level of destruction during the crash.

A former FAA insp, Gary Lackey, who for years has inspected choppers at Island Express, the operator of the helicopter that
went down, said it was not uncommon to see iPads with ForeFlight mounted for use by pilots.

Veteran aviators, however, said the devices could provide insight into a flight but could also prove to be a distraction.

Meanwhile, information from electronic devices gathered by NTSB investigators had previously helped investigators better
    understand why aircraft crashed.

According to the agency Cellphone records are crucial in determining the cause of a fatal crash of a Bell helicopter in New
Mexico in Sept. 2017. The helicopter was flying over open ranch land when it went down.

NTSB determined there was no mechanical failure or malfunction, but the pilot’s cellphone, which was recovered and
reviewed, showed he had called a car rental agency during the flight.

However, the car rental clerk said she could tell the pilot was in a helicopter and that he seemed “busy or distracted.’’

“They were talking about a future rental when the phone disconnected mid-sentence,’’ she said.

“Based on available information, the pilot was likely using his cellphone during the low-altitude flight and became
distracted, which resulted in the controlled flight into terrain,” NTSB said.

Similarly, the likely cause of the fatal crash of a single-engine Cessna airplane near Watkins, in May, 2014, was
revealed by a GoPro camera recovered from the wreckage.

While the crash itself was not captured, the video revealed the pilot and various passengers had been taking
selfies with their phones during a night flight, sometimes using a flash.

The NTSB, however, said that the pilot probably became disoriented and “it is likely that the cellphone used
during the accident flight distracted the pilot and contributed to the development of spatial disorientation and subsequent
    lack of control.

In addition to personal electronics, investigators are also likely trying to extract data from the helicopter’s flight management system.

A veteran pilot of Sikorsky helicopters with two decades flying as well as training pilots, Doug Solbrekken, said he suspects the system
would not yield much more than what officials already know from local radar.

“There is still a slim chance that a passenger’s mobile phone or iPad could have been recording at the time of the crash.

“Some pilots also use GoPro-type cameras suction-cupped to the windows, either pointing outside or back into the cockpit or cabin
    during flight,” he said.

The FAA in 2014 banned airline pilots from using personal electronic devices, citing them as a distraction.

But general aviation pilots are allowed to use devices such as tablets with programs like ForeFlight. With pilots
who are approved to fly passengers and cargo, the FAA can authorize operators to use electronic devices that can assist pilots.

The U.S. Department of Transportation in 2014 examined the safety of electronic flight devices and personal electronics
    used in the cockpit.

However, pilots complained of trouble scrolling and zooming with sometimes incorrect data and said the devices can be
a distraction and sometimes lead to misinterpreted or erroneous aircraft performance parameters.

  • TNG specials: Underwear, ‘everything-red’ on high sales as Valentine arrives

TNG specials: Underwear, ‘everything-red’ on high sales as Valentine arrives

    – Val Gift prediction by sex: Most men to get boxers gift; gift cards, perfumes for ladies

Valentine’s Day, also known as Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, the day is celebrated annually on February 14 although it is not observed as a public holiday in any country. It originated as a Western Christian feast day honouring one or two early saints named Valentinus.

The day is recognised as a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance and romantic love in many regions around the world (Nigeria inclusive).

Here in Nigeria, the celebration is mostly characterised by the wearing of red clothes by celebrants and exchange of gift items. On the perspective of gift exchange, TheNewsGuru (TNG) visited Wuse Market in Abuja, Balogun market in Lagos Island, spoke with traders and arrived at products that were on hot sales as Valentine finally arrives.

    Everything Red sells:

It is common to see heavy displays of items branded red during Valentine celebration (Especially at shopping malls as well as wayside shops) in Nigeria – every trader knows this is what sells.

The red paraphernalia includes cars, gift cards, flowers, chocolates, toffees, teddy bears, and other attractive packages. Red attires, shoes, and bags bracelets, among others, are all displayed openly dramatically to aggressively fascinate and appeal to customers.

In an interview conducted by TheNewsGuru(TNG), Mrs Olamide Arowolo, a trader at Wuse market disclosed that she specifically sought for products packaged in red because it is the best language colour of the Valentine season.

She added: “ In fact, most of the items I am selling here today, are not my usual sales. Before I only sell men and women underwear, but because of the commercial opportunity Valentine brings, I added sales of gift items and the patronage has really been on the high side of late; I am smiling to the bank.”

Asked what items Nigerians are buying most for the Vals, Mrs, Arowolo replied, “Here, I have sold more of undies and perfumes. In fact, I can tell you of a truth that sales of men undies (singlets and boxers) are moving faster than that of ladies which is something very unusual. Normally, ladies patronise me more than men, but that is not the case today.

Another Trader, Aminat Awalu, who runs a perfume shop spoke with TNG, she opined that gift cards are also on high sales.
“I have had high sales of Valentine gift cards. Most of those who bought perfume from me also requested for gift cards, i think it completes the act of gift exchange since it is the purveyor of the actual love message”

However, when Awalu was responding on the specific question of what product is considered to be on ‘hot sale’ in the market, she said ‘undies’

‘Hmm! on the product that is considered as being on ‘hot sale’ I will say it is undies. And I think it is either because Nigerians are not creative with gift selection or the Valentine season has been trivialised to ‘undie’ may be sex thoughts. But for me, if I were to advise anyone, I will suggest that people try selecting pleasant perfumes for their lovers, nothing conveys love better than good smell” She explained.

The situation isn’t any different in Lagos. A tour of some shops by TNG showed that love was truly in the air. Traders were full of smiles and eager to attend to prospective customers who approached them for their desired items.

“Yes sales are quite impressive. People have been trooping here since January to pick their desired items. These includes flowers, male and female undies, romantic frames and greeting cards, engagement rings, etc. The surge in sales will likely go on till the end of February”, Mrs Janet said happily.

However, TNG gathered that the impressive patronage this valentine season is not limited to supermarkets and stores alone. Hoteliers and eateries are huge beneficiaries too.

The manager of one of the popular hotels on the Island confirmed that both loyal and new customers have been making reservations for Valentine as early as December 2019. He said the rooms and other facilities were fully booked as at first week of February. “Some people don’t joke with their Valentines day celebration as it affords them rare opportunities to rekindle their love for each other either as families, friends or couples. The hotels, eateries and other fun spots are in for some money this season irrespective of location,” he said.

    Contraceptives sales high:

Meanwhile, Mr. Ifeanyi Okorie, a Chemist said the sale of contraceptives was rather on the high side in the past few days; especially the emergency pills as compared to condoms.

FG to Nigerians: Find cure for Coronavirus, Lassa fever get N36m

The Federal Government has announced a N36m cash prize for any Nigerian that finds cure for coronavirus and Lassa fever.

Coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, is currently ravaging China, with about a thousand deaths so far recorded, while many others are infected.

Lassa fever is a seasonal disease that usually breaks out in parts of Nigeria during the dry season and most infections usually result in death.

Speaking on Thursday at an event held to mark the retirement from service of A. O. Oyesefo, a former director of the Department of Chemical Technology, the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, said, “I challenge all Nigerian scientists to go out and find cures for coronavirus and Lassa fever.

“Any scientist that is able to do this will be given N36m.”

“There is nothing that we want to do that we can’t do. Nigeria will be making contributions to the world.”

He added, “We want our scientists to know that we place value on them. We want them to know that they are important. If you don’t do things like this, the scientists will think we don’t value them.

“Research takes a lot of time and energy, and we will be very happy to fulfil our pledge.

“This prize is open to the universities; it is also open to private laboratories and research institutes.”

The announcement elicited cheers from participants at the event.

  • Amotekun to run as state-led outfit after IGP’s meeting with South West governors

Amotekun to run as state-led outfit after IGP’s meeting with South West governors

Governors of south-west states have adopted Amotekun, a joint security outfit, as a state effort and not a regional initiative.

The governors had launched Amotekun on January 9, as a regional security initiative.

But Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation, had opposed the move, saying security remains the exclusive preserve of the federal government.

The governors later reached an agreement with the federal government to map out a legal framework for the outfit.

On Thursday, Mohammed Adamu, the inspector-general of police, and the governors agreed on a framework to operate Amotekun as a state-based initiative and not a regional outfit as originally declared.

At the end of the meeting which held in Lagos, Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of Ondo, said a resolution was reached with the police.

Akeredolu, chairman of the south-west governors forum, said the meeting was of “great importance” to the people of the region, adding there was a fruitful discussion with the IGP.

“In addition, we have spoken and we want everyone to know that, Amotekun was not conceived as a regional police, but a state-based security outfit,” he said.

“We have come out of this meeting happy and we have agreed on the resolution. We have shed lights on dark areas and we are on the same page with the police with respect to these issues.”

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, said the meeting was part of the governors’ efforts to champion initiatives and frameworks that continue to provide support and logistics required for effective policing in the region.

In his remarks, the IGP said Amotekun will now operate as a state initiative in collaboration with community policing strategy.

He said every state has an existing security arrangement to fight crime.

“Amotekun is not a regional security outfit. Every state has one form of security arrangement, whether it is vigilante or neighbourhood watch that are working security agencies in the states to fight crime,” he said.

“Amotekun is not different from these initiatives. We have agreed that community policing strategy be infused into the Amotekun structure, so that policing will be initiative of the community members.”

  • Bayelsa: Be careful of your utterances, PDP warns Oshiomhole

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday fired back at the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, over the comments he made on the ruling of the Supreme Court on the Bayelsa State Governorship election.

Oshiomhole, earlier on Thursday while reacting to the sacking of APC’s David Lyon by the apex court, had insisted that Lyon was democratically elected and vowed that “Nobody will be sworn in on Friday as the new governor in Bayelsa State.”

However, in a statement signed by Kola Ologbondiyan, National Publicity Secretary, PDP described Oshiomhole’s comment as an empty and inconsequential ranting.

The party warned Oshiomhole, to steer clear of Bayelsa State as his apparent plots to trigger violence in the state has failed.

The PDP further counseled Oshiomhole to be careful with his utterances and not use any forms of venomous garrulity and clear misuse of language to destabilize our nation and truncate our hard-earned democracy.

“The people of Bayelsa state knows as a fact that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) under our laws, cannot take instructions from any individual, let alone a factional national chairman of a dysfunctional political party like the APC.

“The PDP, as a law-abiding party, counsels Oshiomhole to rein in himself and desist from all odious designs against Bayelsa state, her people and government.

“The PDP also calls on the people of Bayelsa state to remain calm as their mandate has been restored and cannot be taken away by the ranting of any individual who has no stake whatsoever in the wellbeing of his own home state.”

  • Pantami says cybercrime travels at speed of light, advocates awareness

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pantami, has said that cybercrime travels at the speed of light while cyber security travels at the speed of law.

He stated this at the maiden Cyber Security Conference organised by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), on Thursday in Abuja noting that awareness was key to secure cyberspace.
The conference was tagged: “Strengthening the Security and Resilience of the Nation’s Communications Infrastructure’’

The minister further explained that the bill to check the threat was not something that could be enacted within a day or two, adding that cybercrime did not respect the law.

“We should ensure that we secure our cyberspace through creating awareness; awareness is key, let people understand that when you go online you are exposed.
“You need to take some precautions to ensure that you minimise the risks of exposing yourself to it.
“If we create that awareness, it will go a long way in reducing the cybercrime we have in Nigeria.

“Many people do not know the implication of receiving emails without knowing the source and just go and open the attachment.
“This is one of the ways that our systems are being compromised and secondly through using pirated supplies.

“We usually look at the cheapest one. If we go for the cheaper one, the probability of compromising our system is high.
“We need to be updating our applications whether on our Smart phones or anywhere,” Pantami said.

Earlier, the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, said that the internet provided a vast array of prospects to individuals irrespective of their status.

Danbatta said that with the growing volume of adoption of technologies and broad nature of the internet, came the sophistication of cyber-attacks.
He noted that such allowed cyber criminals to attack people outside their geographical locations.

“From social networking to businesses, to research and development, and so much more, all can be exploited by cyber criminals to carryout crimes over the medium.

He said that both technical measures and appropriate legal instruments must be put in place to enhance the resilience and integrity of ICT infrastructure and also to safeguard cyberspace users.

The EVC informed the gathering that an e-fraud desk would be created in his organization to serve as a platform for reporting cases to the security agencies for further investigations and prosecution.

According to Danbatta, the NCC is committed to making sure that the Internet has less cyber criminals, through educating members of the public on the negative impacts of cybercrime.
He stressed the need to limit the impacts by putting in place some initiatives, such as:

“To collaborate with relevant stakeholders to embark on a nationwide Cyber security awareness campaign starting with the FCT and extending to all 36 states of the federation, targeting at young school children.

“To enlighten them on Internet etiquettes, Cybercrime and its Penalties in line with the Nigerian Cybercrime Act 2015, and protection against Cybercriminals.

“Establishmet of a Cyber Security Incidence Response Team (CSIRT) Centre to help serve as the single national point of contact for international coordination of Cyber security incidents in Nigeria.

“To create Technical Framework for the Use of Social Media Network in Nigeria.
Danbatta said the objective “is to provide the baseline for Social Media governance, policy, and procedures to guide individuals, businesses or the government on the use of social media.”

The conference was to introduce cyber insurance, bridging the cyber workforce gap and strengthening national cooperation.
It was also for exchange of information and development of comprehensive strategies to curb cybercrimes.

The programme, which will be annual, will address the cyber security challenges confronting the communications industry in Nigeria.

PDP’s candidate can’t be sworn in as Bayelsa Gov – Oshiomhole

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress(APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has declared candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senator Douye Diri cannot be sworn in on Friday as Bayelsa Governor because he did not meet the requirements of the Supreme Court.

Oshiomhole pointed out the judgement of the Supreme Court said the certificate of return should be issued to the candidate, who has the required spread in the election aside from David Lyon.

He said there was no candidate in the election that met the requirement apart from Lyon, adding that the implication is that from Friday Bayelsa will be without a Governor.

  • Douye Diri’s victory: Atiku demands consistency from Supreme Court

Douye Diri’s victory: Atiku demands consistency from Supreme Court

Following the victory of Senator Douye Diri at the Supreme Court on Thursday, presidential candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 election, and former vice president, Atiku Abubakar quickly congratulated the new Bayelsa State Governor.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the Supreme Court sacked, along with his Deputy, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremieoyo, the Governor-elect of Bayelsa State, David Lyon, whom unconfirmed reports say was already rehearsing for his botched swearing in ceremony of Friday.

To make sense of Atiku’s speech following Diri’s victory, one would want to first consider that the same Supreme Court threw out Atiku’s case contesting the outcome of the 2019 presidential election that returned President Muhammadu Buhari for second term.

Recall that the Supreme Court also uncharacteristically declared, winner, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hope Uzodinma, the third runner up in the Governorship election that was held in Imo.

The Supreme Court judgement of Uzodinma, especially drew criticisms, even from Atiku, who has advised the apex court to be consistent in its judgments, and find the resolve to always deliver just judgments no matter whose ox is gored.

“The Lords Justices have given us another opportunity to show Nigerians that power belongs to the people,” Atiku said, adding, “I urge the Supreme Court to show consistency in its judgments and find the resolve to always deliver just-judgments no matter whose ox is gored. The people of Nigeria are behind the apex court in whatever they do to free themselves from the dominance of dictatorial forces”.

In the congratulatory message to Diri, Atiku called on the people of the State to make peace with the recent past and embrace the future together, united in the mission to transform the state into a haven of peace and prosperity.

He also revealed that Diri had visited him before the elections and received his blessings and counsel, stressing that he wad fully satisfied that Diri has what it takes to make Bayelsa the ‘glory of all lands’.

    Read full congratulatory message below:

I received the verdict of the Supreme Court, declaring the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the Bayelsa state gubernatorial elections, Senator Douye Diri, as the duly elected Governor of the state, with gladness.

Senator Douye Diri had cause to visit with me before the elections and received my blessings and counsel. I am fully satisfied that he has what it takes to make Bayelsa the ‘glory of all lands’. His intellect, personality and character, are a credit to Bayelsa and the PDP.

I congratulate Senator Douye Diri and his running mate, Mr. Lawrence Ewhrujakpor. I also felicitate with the Peoples Democratic Party. The Lords Justices have given us another opportunity to show Nigerians that power belongs to the people, and we must make good use of this opportunity.

I call on all the people of Bayelsa to make peace with the recent past and embrace the future together, united in the mission to transform the state into a haven of peace and prosperity.

Finally, I urge the Supreme Court to show consistency in its judgments and find the resolve to always deliver just-judgments no matter whose ox is gored. The people of Nigeria are behind the apex court in whatever they do to free themselves from the dominance of dictatorial forces.

Dignitaries at the summit which has gone into a private session as at the time of filling this report includes: Governors of Lagos, and Ondo states, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Rotimi Akeredolu, while Oyo, Ogun, Osun and Ekiti states are represented by their deputy governors, Engr, Rauf Olaniyan, Engr. (Mrs) Noimot Oyedele, Mr. Benedict Alabi and Mrs. Bisi Egbeyemi respectively.

Also present are: the Inspector General of Police, Mohamned Adamu, all the Commissioners of Police from the six South West states, other security outfits in Lagos state, Commissioners for Justice/Attorney-Generals from the South West states, Royal fathers, Community Development Committee representatives and others.

Chairman, South West Governors’ Forum, Rotimi Akerodolu said, governors of the South West would ensure that they give what it takes for the security of lives and properties in the region.

Akeredolu gave the assurance in his remarks at the on-going South West Governors, the Inspector General of Police and other Stakeholders Summit on Community Policing taking place at the Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja.

The governor said it was time to face the truth which is community policing because of the peculiarity of every state, adding that this is what is done in advanced countries and that it was time to embrace it because of numerous security challenges which had overstretched the conventional police.

“This is something of great importance to all of us, something we cannot pretend about, we must be honest with ourselves, all of us agree that we are facing security challenges, the National Assembly, the President, nobody is happy with the way things are going, we must have a rethink about central police, there is too much on the IG’s table”, Aketedolu said.
