BREAKING: Supreme Court sacks Bayelsa governor-elect, Lyon

The Supreme Court has sacked the governor-elect of Bayelsa State, David Lyon, and his Deputy, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremieoyo.

A five-man panel of the apex court led by Justice Mary Peter-Odili ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to withdraw the Certificate of Return issued to the All Progressives Congress’ candidates as the winners of the November 16, 2019 governorship election in the state.

The apex court ordered INEC to issue fresh certificates to the candidates of the party with the next highest votes and with the required constitutional spread of votes in the results of the election, which are the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidates.

Justice Ejembi Ekwo, who read the lead judgment of the apex, made the orders after disqualifying the APC’s deputy governorship candidate, Degi-Eremienyo, as a candidate in the election.

The court upheld the November 12, 2019 judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja which had disqualified Degi-Eremienyo in the election for submitting forged certificates to INEC.

The court ruled Degi-Eremienyo’s disqualification had infected the joint ticket with which he and the governorship candidate, Lyon, ran for and won the November 16, 2019 election.

Opposition paid miscreants to boo Buhari in Borno – Presidency

The Presidency has accused opposition politicians of paying miscreants to boo the presidential motorcade in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, on Wednesday.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, made the allegation in an interview with the Hausa Service of the BBC.

Residents of Maiduguri had on Wednesday, booed the motorcade of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari, (retd.), during his condolence visit to the state over the killing of over 30 travellers at Auno park.

Shehu said, “I was part of the delegation that entered Maiduguri right from the airport to the Palace of the Shehu of Borno. The people came out to say thank you and welcome us.

“But there was a group which came out shouting ‘we don’t want’.”

He said, maybe “some politicians gathered some miscreants and paid them money to boo Buhari”.

The presidential aide said whoever recorded the booing incident and shared it on social media didn’t do justice to the people of Borno State whom he said had a reputation for welcoming guests.

Shehu also said it was not possible to satisfy everyone since no human being was god, especially in a city like Maiduguri which has a population of four to five million people.

He noted that the regime of the President had demonstrated the capacity to fight Boko Haram and he had promised to change strategy in dealing with what he described as a new problem.

Represented by Abraham Oshadami, Head, Information Technology at NCC, Danbatta underscored the importance of application of ICT tools to daily operations of both private and public institutions in Nigeria and stated that as the national telecom regulator, the Commission is promoting ICT usage in this regard.

According to Danbatta, the Commission has the tradition of supporting ICT usage across Nigerian institutions, as this helps to empower the youths and women, in particular, in various public and private institutions. Danbatta stated that this commitment of the NCC has become even more imperative in the light of Federal Government’s digital economy agenda.

“Therefore, we want to use this medium to encourage government at all levels and non-governmental organisations to be committed to the use of ICT in their respective statutory obligations to Nigerians. This is one of the veritable means to deliver good governance and human capacity building to Nigerians. Let all leaders be United against insecurity, Lawan pleads

…APC, PDP and others should join hands to fight insecurity

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan on Thursday begged all leaders devoid of party affiliations to join hands to help combat insecurity in Nigeria.

The Senate President made this plea while ruling on Senator Kasshim Shettima’s motion on Auno attacks in Maiduguri on the floor of the Senate.

Lawan said”all political leaders and non political leaders should be United against insecurity in Nigeria as insecurity recognises nobody.

“PDP or APC leaders should be more engaged in the fight against insecurity in the country and we should be more focused and united now to succeed.

“Our adhoc Committee on security matters has been actively involved with all the security agencies as they have been interfacing with both serving and retired security officers.

“At the end of the day we will brainstorm on it and pass a resolution and I see no reason our police should not be well equipped and we’ll funded as this is not a loss.

  • Valentine’s Day: See most preferred gift choice among residents in Abuja

Valentine’s Day: See most preferred gift choice among residents in Abuja

Gift packs are the most preferred gift choice among residents in Abuja for the 2020 Valentine’s Day.

Most respondents on Thursday picked gift packs over single gift items or romantic dinners.

According to them, the ability to put a gift pack together showed thoughtfulness in picking each of the items packs will contain.

A gift pack is a collection of items, sometimes custom made, put in a box together with heartfelt meaning.

The respondents, both male and female, agreed that the items do not have to be expensive but should be practical enough to use.

Ifeanyi Ikediashi said that he would prefer if his partner gave him a collection of items rather than just one huge item.

He referred to himself as the ‘best gift collector’ and said, “I know I give really good gifts as well and there is that bliss you get when you pick our several items to wrap together.

“Plus, everyone likes thoughtful things that they can actually use. I would pick packs over just one big item.”

Also, Jennifer Tar told NAN that she enjoys picking small meaningful items and would love if same was gifted to her for Valentine.

NAN reports that the popularity of gift packs shot up in 2020 when compared to other years.

It can be clearly seen from the outpour of customised gift packs vendors online and offline.

The pressure is felt more on Instagram where vendors display pictures of packs they have put together.

All they ask are the names and likes of your partner while they assist you in putting the right gifts together in the box.

Vendors, who spoke with NAN acknowledge that the trend has gotten more popular in recent times and it has been good for business.

A usual gift pack might contain a statement jewelry piece, chocolates, hand written note and custom made vintage items specific to a person’s character or job.

They range from N7, 000 for small boxes and can go as high as N200, 000 for really expensive and customised boxes.

A vendor, Chioma Odii told NAN that she has made the most sales from selling gift packs in 2020 since the three years that she has done the business.

She said, “I think these days people are now more intentional about how they want to be treated. They just do not want you to do the usual.

“People want to know that you know them and what they like. So, a good pack will show that you think of them and not just get them what everyone got for Valentine.”

Odii added that the trend will not stop as more people get self aware and want to feel really special.

Valentine’s Day, also called Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is celebrated annually on Feb. 14.

Originating as a Western Christian feast day honouring one or two early saints named Valentinus, Valentine’s Day is recognised as a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of roman and romantic love in many regions around the world.

  • Insecurity: Government response unsatisfactory, Catholic Archbishop declares

Insecurity: Government response unsatisfactory, Catholic Archbishop declares

Msgr. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, Catholic Archbishop of Benin City and President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, has said government response to insecurity in the country is unsatisfactory.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Archbishop Akubeze stated this in an interview with the pontifical foundation Aid to the Church in Need (ACN), explaining the serious political problems arising from the current situation of insecurity in the country.

“Boko Haram attacks on Nigerians have continued for many years. Their religious extremist ideology is to make the whole of Nigeria an Islamic Republic. They resent and reject everything that is Western, except that they use Western-made guns and ammunition to attack innocent Nigerians.

“For the majority of Nigerians, the Government response has largely been unsatisfactory. As we speak, Leah Sharibu, who was taken captive by the Boko Haram and refused to renounce her Christian faith, is still being held.

“Only a few weeks ago, a local Government Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) was beheaded by Boko Haram… he was killed simply because he was a Christian,” Akubeze stated.

Speaking on the current situation in Nigeria, the Archbishop said, “I really do not know if I will be able to paint the true picture of Nigeria to you and the world in just one interview. I must admit that I am going to try to do so, knowing that I risk doing a great disservice because of time constraint and the complexities with regards to the nature of Nigeria.

“The current situation in Nigeria reflects an unnecessary, unwarranted and self-inflicted tension. A politically polarized nation. Unfortunately, some of our political leaders have made and keep making decisions, statements, and appointments that make some Nigerians from some parts of the country question again and again the reason for the unity of the country.

“We live in a Nigeria where we have a Constitution that recognises the Federal Character principle, which means that in the administration of Federal Institutions there must be representation from every sector of the country. This was designed to make every Nigerian feel welcomed and to know that Nigeria belongs to everyone.

“In the face of the daunting challenge of a great insecurity previously never witnessed in Nigeria except during the civil war, the present Federal Government has decided to take a completely suspicious approach to appointments of people to sensitive positions.

“Virtually all the officials who advise the President are from the same Hausa-Fulani ethnic group. 95 percent of them are Muslims, in a country where there are about 50 percent Christians. The authority to provide leadership in the security sector is led by one religious sect, one ethnic group, in a multi-religious and multi-ethnic nation!

“We at the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria have repeatedly spoken out against this attitude of the Federal Government. We have met the President and expressed our complete disapproval at this position and action of the Government”.

Commenting on the recent kidnapping of seminarians in Kaduna State by Boko Haram, and the subsequent killing of one of them, Michael Nnadi, Akubeze said, “We heard the news with sadness in our hearts. The kidnapping of the seminarians unfortunately comes amidst the kidnapping of priests and religious by the same group of people who are terrorising Nigerians. Too many priests and religious have been kidnaped in the recent past. The seminarians who were released, I understand are presently receiving treatment.

“As to their specific health conditions I am not able to speak about that. But suffice to say, from the stories we have heard from those held in captivity, there is no doubt that the young men would have been greatly distressed and traumatized. We are pained and sad at the killing of Michael Nnadi. And to know that he was an orphan is more painful. May his soul and the souls of all who have died in the hands of these criminals rest in peace”.

When asked if the government was doing enough to protect Christians, he said, “The President of Nigeria recently stated that he was shocked at the unabated killing of Nigerians, who are mostly Christians. Many Nigerians wonder whether the President lives in a parallel universe. How can he be surprised at this time?

“After some of us have attended mass burials of Christians killed by Boko Haram? The Government is certainly not doing enough to protect both Christians and Muslims. A few days ago, the National Assembly unanimously moved that the President change the officials because they are not providing sufficient security for the lives of Nigerians.

“This legislative arm of the Government has a majority of the ruling party as members. This speaks to the fact that Nigerians are dissatisfied with the level of incompetency shown by the Government of Nigeria with regards to protecting lives and properties.

“We at the CBCN already stated in our communique that a Government that is incapable of fulfilling the constitutional obligation to secure lives and properties of Nigeria will gradually lose legitimacy.

On what public places are doing to provide security, Archbishop Akubeze said, “Every institution is trying to provide security in these places of worship. Based on local intelligent reports the religious leaders are responding to the needs of their people. There are some churches that request the services of the Nigerian Police for Sunday worship and have to pay for the security provided for them.

“There are others who contract private security outfits. In some cases, the faithful themselves volunteer to provide security. It depends on the particular area. There is presently no homogeneous description of security plans for places of worship and seminaries. Most of the privately contracted security agencies are not well armed to be able to deal with the level of threat posed by herdsmen and Boko Haram”.
