Police slam 16-count charge on Wadume, Army Captain, others

Taraba kidnap kingpin Bala Hamisu popularly known as Wadume would be facing charges of terrorism, murder, kidnapping and illegal arms running.

Also going to face the same charges are Captain Ahmed Balarabe and 18 others.

Inspector-General of Police filed a 16-count charge bordering on the above offences against the defendants at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

A source said though the matter is yet to be assigned a judge, the criminal charge dated February 3, 2020 was filed by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Simon Lough; Anthony Egwu, and Peter Amadi, of the Legal/Prosecution Section, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

It would be recalled that about six months ago, it was widely reported that Wadume, who was arrested by policemen, was aided to escape by some soldiers attached to Battalion 93, Takum, led by Balarabe.

The suspected kidnap kingpin escaped when the soldiers attacked the policemen, who arrested him, leading to the death of three policemen and two civilians. Other policemen were injured in the incident.

Among the charges were that Wadume in connivance with Balarabe and other suspects (some still at large) between February and April 2019 at Takum and Ibi, Taraba State, conspired together to commit felony, to wit: acts of terrorism, by attacking and kidnapping one Usman Garba, aka Mayo, at his filling station in Takum, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 17 of the Terrorism (Prevention) Amendment Act 2013.

The defendants were also accused of possessing six AK-47 rifles and dealing in prohibited firearms contrary to Section 27 (1)(a)(I) and (1)(b)(iii) of the Firearms Act Cap F28, Laws of the Federation, 2004.

It was gathered that the prosecution would rely on the testimonies of 29 eyewitnesses.

Some of the eyewitnesses, it was learnt, would testify on how Garba was kidnapped on February 16, 2019 at Takum by Wadume and his gang.

Wadume and his gang had allegedly demanded a N200m ransom. The family of the victim had managed to raise about N106m for the kidnappers, yet they allegedly went ahead to kill the victim.

It was also learnt that DCP Abba Kyari, CSP Baba Khali, ASP Abdulrahman Mohammed, ASP Bawa James, Inspector Habila Samuel and Inspector Ilarju Joseph are the investigating police officers in the case, and will testify about their findings in the course of the investigation as well as tender exhibits and documents.

Exhibits in the case, it was gathered, included written statements of the defendants, photographs of the victims, autopsy reports, six AK-47 rifles recovered from the gang, three empty shells, one live ammunition and six Volkswagen Sharon buses, and one (police) Toyota Hiace bus, among others.

Also among exhibits attached to the charge were the call logs showing the phone communication between Wadume, Balarabe and the police officers at Ibi Police Station.

“They will be arraigned once a judge is assigned to the case,” the source said.

Life not as rosy as it looks on social media- Tonto Dikeh

Outspoken Nollywood diva, Tonto Dikeh says life is not as rosy as it is painted to be on social media.

The actress made this known via her Instagram page on Wednesday, February 5, 2020. According to her, people should not be misled into thinking it’s that easy as it looks on social media.

“Quick advice for young hustling people: A lot of you come on social media to see people who are having a great time with exotic trips and vacation, and you slip into depression, what you don’t know is that many people plan and save towards their trips. Some people plan a year before or even two years. A beautiful photo that shows a vacation might be a result of saving for many years. Don’t be deceived into thinking it’s that easy. It is not.

“Even the flashy cars and houses and phones you see with rich people, they plan and save towards it. They won’t tell you, all you know is that they just got a house. Go and ask them how long it took to save up, and the sacrifices they made to gather up the finances. See, it’s never really too rosy for people as it seems on social media. Just keep working hard. Save for important things. Save to spoil yourself. ,” she wrote.

In 2019, took to her Instagram page to express her gratitude for all the past mistakes in her life which have helped to make her the ‘man’ she is today.

According to her: “I’M THANKFUL FOR ALL MY MISTAKES/FAILURES. THEY ARE THE EVIDENCE THAT PROVES I TRIED. I’ve learned more from failure than I have succeeded. It’s the training ground that’s preparing me for where I’m going. I no longer fear it. Instead, it gets me closer to the GOAL. Without it, I wouldn’t be the MAN I am today,” she wrote.

  • North launches own security outfit ‘SHEGE KA FASA’

Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has unveiled Northern Regional Security Initiative “SHEGE KA FASA” for ratification by the northern governors as part of measures to address security challenges within the region.

Addressing a press conference shortly before unveiling the outfit, CNG emphasised that for the past 12 years, the North has struggled with disabling challenges that include dwindling economy, rising poverty and more worrying, a crippling security situation that has taken a huge toll on lives, property and the overall cohesion of the region.

The spokesperson of the group, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman who addressed the press before the unveiling said that the.security challenges manifested in 2008 in the form of a deadly insurgency from the Northeast and within a short time, spread to other parts of the region and virtually turned the entire region into a battlefield.

The Coalition noted that while the insurgency raged, other disturbances were created in the region in the form of cattle rustling that pitched northern communities against each other.

“A new dimension was introduced to the farmers/herders conflict which gradually deteriorated into an uncontrollable proportion and deepened the artificial rift between communities in the region.

“This trend suddenly metamorphosed into a deadly armed banditry and kidnapping for ransom which is recycled for arms and drugs. This is in addition to another frustrating trend of the theft and forced trafficking in northern children to other parts of the country for reasons that are largely dubious.

“The culmination of these security challenges has for the past decade turned the entire region into a house of horror with violent killings reported on a daily basis, communities displaced with formal and informal IDP camps spreading across the region.

“The situation today, on most northern highways, innocent travelers are waylaid, robbed and abducted, towns and villages attacked and sacked by bandits who have created an atmosphere of palpable fear across the region.

“As the situation grows more desperate by the day with the North as the most porous and vulnerable, with northerners as the most distressed and estranged.

CNG stressed that it is absolutely impossible to expect that communities would continue to fold their arms while criminals invade their abodes, kill, abduct and displace them.

“By this, today we unveil the symbols for the Shege Ka Fasa outfit which would be formally inaugutated in the coming few weeks when all necessary legal processes might have been completed or formally adopted and ratified by the northern states governors.” It stated.

CNG, therefore, observed that, there is an apparent correlation between the current security situation and the unchecked proliferation of hard drugs and other dangerous substances and that the current security challenges in the region are therefore driven by the proliferation of firearms and hard drugs which are deliberately introduced into the region by outside interests.

It also observed that the drug and firearms trade is fueled by illegal funds channeled by international financial criminals such as Yahoo boys desperate to launder money into the country and that already, this trend has completely undermined the economic and social fabrics of the North, and is responsible for the rampant social problems like banditry, armed robbery, kidnapping, and other forms of security challenges witnessed today.

“That the current desperate situation in the North can be largely contained and eventually controlled by intensifying the task of anticipating and checkmating the manoeuvres of all criminal elements and blocking the supply channels for such dangerous merchandise as firearms and drugs.

“That this task can only be successfully achieved with the active involvement of the members of all northern communities that are at the receiving end of the apparent security lapses.

“That in the prevailing circumstances, the only option, is to resort to voluntary self-defense mechanisms in line with initiatives taken by other regions that are even least affected in comparison to what obtains in the North”.

CNG, therefore, resolved that “Against the backdrop of these concerns and observations, the Coalition of Northern Groups does not wish to remain silent or passive and allow things that affect the North and potentially cause greater instability in the country to continue unchecked.

“Aware also of the need for concerted efforts to assist the Federal Government to restore peace and security and to disband all militias and armed groups in northern Nigeria to ensure that no group has the capacity to challenge the State in its prerogative to maintain law and order, and protect citizens’ lives and properties, the CNG has:

“Initiated practical measures for the setting up of a northern regional security outfit to compliment the efforts of the police, the military, the security services to detect, expose and defeat all criminal machinations and carry out specific and general tasks that would realign the attitude and thinking of the public with the ideals and objectives of the founding fathers of the region.

“The outfit, codenamed “SHEGE KA FASA” is designed to be the vanguard of the entire North encompassing every ethnic group and religion and to be deeply patriotic in its operation.

“In addition to performing general complimentary tasks for enhancing security in the region, the outfit shall also Coordinate operations against the influx of hard drugs into the North, take steps to neutralize all centers of gravity for the supply, manufacturer and distribution of such drugs and other dangerous substances”.

The group further revealed that the outfit will Coordinate vigilance to check and expose illegal arms trade, supply channels and possession. Guard against the theft and illegal traffic in kids and other vulnerable sections of the northern population and expose operations of fraudsters like the Yahoo boys whose ill gotten wealth forms part of the source of funding for the drug and arms trade.

The group calls the attention of all governors of northern states to the urgent necessity to join their counterparts in the South-West and South-East by adopting and ratifying this initiative for northern regional security and providing the necessary legal framework for its operation in order to secure the lives of the people that are in constant threat.

It also resolved to formalize this request by writing to the governors through the Northern Governors Forum and to the leaderships of traditional, religious and cultural institutions in the region.

It restated that if the state governments and other leaders of the region fail to take action to protect the region the way their southern counterparts are doing, adding that CNG is willing to follow through with all the processes of obtaining the required legal backing for the outfit from the relevant federal authorities.

Nathaniel Samuel: Inter- Faith says God averted suspected suicide from causing religious war

The National Inter-Faith and Religious Organization for Peace (NIFROP) has expressed gratitude to God over a failed explosion attempt at a Living Faith Church in Kaduna on Sunday, as an impending religious war was averted.

A potential tragedy was avoided on Sunday in Sabon Tasha, Chikun Local Government Area after a suspected suicide bomber Nathaniel Samuel was arrested.

The lone bomber was reportedly spotted by the Close Circuit Camera Television (CCTV) of the church, according to the security officers, Samuel was accosted and handed over to the police at the Sabon Tasha Divisional Police Station.

And NIFROP, which recently commissioned a 21-day fasting and prayer for the nation’s peaceful coexistence said Nathaniel’s capture is an evidence that God answers prayers and assurance that enemies of the country will be exposed.

In a statement signed by Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Abutu , its Coordinating Secretary General, the inter-faith group condemned the incident which would have led into national mourning and fingers pointed at wrong quarters.

According to NIFROP, the nation is indeed on the path to greatness owing to the fact that President Muhammadu Buhari is God’s anointed choice.

The group, however, advised religious leaders in the country to quit the silence only because Nathaniel is Christian.

  • Atiku tackles Buhari for claiming 90% Boko Haram victims are Muslims

The presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party in the 2019 presidential election, Atiku Abubakar, has faulted claims by the PresidentMuhammadu Buhari, that more Muslims are killed by Boko Haram.

Atiku made his position known in a tweet on Wednesday.

While replying to a report on Buhari’s claim, Atiku tackled Buhari for being concerned with the religion of the victims.

He said the activities of Boko Haram should be condemned outrightly regardless of the victims’ faith.

“We mustn’t rationalise killings. Whether Christian, Muslim, Traditionalist, or Atheist, the killing of any human being, by Boko Haram, or any misguided group is wrong and should be condemned unequivocally. There is no compulsion in religion. Only love,” Atiku tweeted.

The President had claimed that it is not true that the Boko Haram insurgency had claimed the lives of more Christians than Muslims.

He argued that the contrary was the case, insisting that “90 per cent” of deaths from attacks by the terrorists were Muslims.

Buhari gave his position in an op-ed published in Speaking Out, a guest opinion column for Christianity Today, a United States-based magazine.

The op-ed was a tribute to the Michika Local Government Area Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Adamawa State, the late Pastor Lawan Andimi

He said that Musa lived in Yan-Nabayye village in Rimi Local Government Area of the state.
