Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki on Friday left the All Progressives Congress (APC) and moved to the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP).

Addressing party officials at the PDP secretariat in Benin City, the Governor said he automatically becomes the PDP leader in the State following his defection.

He reiterated commitment to provide quality leadership, adding that he is ready to lead the party to victory in the September 19 Governorship election in the State.

“I am here this afternoon to inform you that upon my resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), I have now decided, having consulted widely within the State and across the country, to become a member of PDP.

“The Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in my view has demonstrated and has shown that it is a party that is rooted in democratic practices; the party that believes in justice and fairness; the party that respects it’s members.

“I automatically become the leader of this party. I want to assure all of you (that) I am prepared to provide leadership. I am prepared to provide leadership that will lead this party to victory.

“I am prepared to provide leadership that will not only put PDP into office in Edo State but as a ruling party in Edo State, we will make sure that the level of progress, growth and participation in the political system and our people is unrivalled in this country.

“I am very happy to be here. With the reception I have received since I drove in here has been ecstatic. The energy I see in this party is the kind of energy I require to take Edo to the level we should go to next,” Obaseki said.

EPL: Luiz seeking two-year contract for Arsenal stay

Arsenal defender David Luiz is seeking a new two-year contract at Emirates.

The club can propose a temporary extension until the end of the season or activate an automatic 12-month renewal clause inserted into the player’s contract.

However, according to the Daily Mail, Arsenal do not want to pay Luiz his £120,000-a-week wages for another season.

The coronavirus pandemic is biting the club’s finances hard, prompting a ten per cent pay cut agreed by the vast majority of the squad during football’s shutdown.

A new contract on reduced terms may be on the table yet Mikel Arteta’s side still favour a single year for the 33-year-old.

Mass protests in U.S. caused no new spike in COVID-19 cases – Reports

The wave of mass protests against racism and police violence has not resulted in a significant increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the U.S., media reported, citing preliminary studies.

In Minnesota, which is the epicentre of the protests, 1.8 per cent of 3,200 protesters, who tested for COVID-19 at community sites, turned out to be infected with the coronavirus, The Wall Street Journal reported on late Thursday.

Some 8,500 other Minnesota protesters tested through their health-care providers or at other sites, and only 0.99 per cent of them were diagnosed with COVID-19.

Within the past seven days, the percentage of positive COVID-19 tests in New York has remained below 3 per cent, with the number of hospitalised patients continuing to decrease.

The authorities of Seattle and Chicago have also said that no major outbreaks of the coronavirus disease have been registered so far.

Nationwide protests against racism and police violence were originally sparked after George Floyd, a 46-year-old African American, died in Minneapolis on May 25, after a white police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes.

  • Twitter pulls another string on Trump

Twitter pulls another string on Trump

Twitter has pulled yet another string on US President Donald Trump by adding ‘manipulated media’ label on his tweet.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the President’s tweet featured a doctored video clip supposedly meant to be a news item from CNN of two kids.

The original video, which went viral on social media in 2019, showed a black toddler and a white toddler running towards each other and hugging.

It was published with the headline “These two toddlers are showing us what real-life besties look like” on CNN’s website last year.

The clip shared in Trump’s tweet first shows the part where one of those toddlers is seen running ahead of the other.

A CNN chyron with the captions “terrified toddler runs from racist baby” and “Racist baby probably a Trump voter” were then appended to the video.

The tweeted video, with more than 7.7 million views and 1,25,000 retweets, then goes on to show the original video and concludes: “America is not the problem. Fake news is.”

“We may label Tweets containing synthetic and manipulated media to help people understand their authenticity and to provide additional context,” Twitter says in an explanation of its policies posted on its website.

The microblogging platform has been under fierce scrutiny from the Trump administration since it fact-checked Trump’s tweets about unsubstantiated claims of mail-in voting fraud.

Twitter has also labelled a Trump tweet about protests in Minneapolis as “glorifying violence.”

The president, who has battled Twitter and other tech companies over alleged censorship of conservative voices on social media platforms, said in late May he would propose legislation to potentially scrap or weaken the law shielding Internet companies, in an extraordinary attempt to regulate outlets where he has been criticised.

  • Murtala Muhammed Airport achieves milestone

    Murtala Muhammed Airport achieves milestone

The Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos State, operated by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has achieved a milestone.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the airport has joined the community of climate smart airports within Airport Carbon Accreditation as the first in Nigeria.

The airport received a level 1 ‘Mapping’ recognition for creating a complete and independently verified carbon inventory, and outlining plans on how to reduce the emissions.

In June 2008, the annual assembly of ACI EUROPE adopted a landmark resolution on Climate Change when its member airports committed to reduce carbon emissions from their operations, with the ultimate goal of becoming carbon neutral.

One year later, at the 2009 annual assembly, ACI EUROPE launched Airport Carbon Accreditation, allowing the assessment and recognition of participating airports’ efforts to manage and reduce their CO₂ emissions.

Airport Carbon Accreditation is an independent, voluntary programme administered by WSP, an international consultancy appointed by ACI EUROPE to enforce the accreditation criteria for airports on an annual basis. The administration of the programme is overseen by an Advisory Board.

As of November 2011, Airport Carbon Accreditation has been extended to airports in the Asia-Pacific region, in cooperation with ACI Asia-Pacific. The programme was also extended to the African region of ACI in June 2013.

In September 2014, Airport Carbon Accreditation took off in North America and it went global in November 2014 with its extension to airports in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Airports applying to become accredited must have their carbon footprints independently verified in accordance with ISO14064 (Greenhouse Gas Accounting). Evidence of this must be provided to the programme administrator (WSP) together with all claims regarding carbon management processes which must also be independently verified.

The definitions of emissions footprints used by Airport Carbon Accreditation follow the principles of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the World Resources Institute (WRI) “Greenhouse Gas Protocol” Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard.

When considering the emissions from aircraft within the airport perimeter and on final approach and initial departure, Airport Carbon Accreditation uses the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) definition of the Landing-Take Off cycle and requires airports to comply with these definitions.

  • Malami plots to sack EFCC’s Magu, in damning memo to Buhari

Malami plots to sack EFCC’s Magu, in damning memo to Buhari

Justice Minister, Abubakar Malami, has recommended to President Muhammadu Buhari the sacking of Ibrahim Magu, the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Malami, in a memorandum to the president, anchored his recommendation on several grounds “ranging from diversion of recovered loot to insubordination and misconduct” by Magu.

According to a ThisDay report Malami included in the memo, a short list of three candidates for consideration to replace Magu.

The report also claimed that Malami made 22 weighty allegations against Magu.

Malami alleged accounting gaps or discrepancies of figures concerning the recovered assets, claiming that Magu was not transparent enough in the management of recovered assets.

But Magu is fighting back and his supporters within the Presidency said ” removing Magu at this time when he has given muscle to Buhari’s anti-corruption fight would be a mistake.”

“It is painful that the EFCC boss is facing certain powerful forces who have decided to remove him in spite of his remarkable achievements,” sources stated.

A Magu supporter said:” It will interest you to note that Malami accused the EFCC boss of disclosing a total naira recovery of N504 billion but lodged N543 billion in the Recovery Account with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

“Incidentally, this exceeded the disclosed figures by N39 billion.”

According to the supporter of the EFCC boss, what should be a point of commendation is now being used against Magu.

Magu has been acting chairman of the EFCC since 9 November, 2015.

He twice failed to scale through Senate confirmation during the Saraki 8th Assembly.

  • What couples in Jos like about the pandemic lockdown

What couples in Jos like about the pandemic lockdown

Some couples in Jos, Plateau, have expressed what they liked most about the COVID-19 lockdown.

Some of the couples, who spoke with the NAN on Friday in Jos, said that if it were possible to have a lockdown without a pandemic, it would help build healthy family relationships.

Mrs Patience Davis, a mother of two and a restaurateur, said the lockdown gave her and her husband an enabling environment to sort out pressing issues in the family.

“I have told my husband to increase the house-keeping money but he wouldn’t budge.

“But he did in the month of May when he escorted me to the market,’’ Davis said.

Mr Brown Kelechi and his wife, Ego, said that the lockdown taught them how to live as retirees, as they have both had a foretaste of it and were prepared better now to face it.

Mr and Mrs Bold Kehinde said that the lockdown taught them tolerance in a different light.

“We have been getting on each other’s nerve and constantly arguing about trivial things.

“But during the lockdown, we mended all walls,’’ they said.

Mr and Mrs John Popoola said they had been putting in extra effort to direct the path of their teenage son, adding that during the lockdown, they plunged into the teenager’s world and made a huge success.

“We couldn’t understand why the boy was isolating himself but we later discovered what the problem was and dealt with it,’’ the Popoolas said.

Mr and Mrs Ibrahim said that the lockdown gave them the opportunity to give priority to family and relate closely like never before.

They also said that the period helped in adding flavour to their relationship.
