Solskjaer reveals who he contacted before signing Fernandes

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has lifted the lid on the steps taken to sign Bruno Fernandes in January from Sporting CP.

Solskjaer has now spoken at length about the exhaustive process in scouting the Portuguese star, which involved a chat over the phone with Cristiano Ronaldo.

He told the High Performance podcast: “So obviously Cristiano was an easy goal for me that I managed to get through.

“Through Patrice Evra, I managed to get hold of Cristiano and his recommendation obviously stood him (Fernandes) in good stead.”

The manager added: “It was off the field as well in training. And he demands off me. He demands off his team-mates. The first day he was in the club, he shook everyone’s hand. He doesn’t, he didn’t come in here thinking, ‘I’m the, I’m the big shot. I’m… you follow me’. No, he shook absolutely every staff members’ hand.

“And, of course, this is a family – Man United – we’ve always been a family, and Sir Alex, the way he’s created this atmosphere in this dressing, in this training ground, I think it’s unique.”

Crucially, Fernandes had the ability to earn respect quickly too.

“He’s got the talent of course,” Solskjer continued. “That’s, you can see the quality is there. And we’ve seen that for a long time, but then again, he steps up when it matters.

“And he does it when it matters. He’s delivered crosses, he’s delivered assists, he’s scored goals, he’s took penalties. He’s done everything in a short space of time that you’d expect…”

602 repentant Boko Haram members denounce membership

Some 602 repentant Boko Haram members, on Monday, denounced their membership of the group and swore Oath of Allegiance to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The ex-insurgents who have completed a de-radicalisation, rehabilitation and reintegration programme, denounced their membership of the insurgent group at the Malam Sidi Camp in Kwami Local Government area of Gombe State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that they denounced their membership of Boko Haram before an 11-man Quasi Judicial Panel headed by Justice Nehizena Afolabi, of the Federal High Court, Gombe.

Speaking during the exercise, Maj.-Gen. Bamidele Shafa, the Coordinator, Operation Safe Corridor, said the appearance of the repentant insurgents before the judicial panel was a major requirement, before their reintegration into the society.

“The panel is for the clients to appear before it to confess their pasts and denounce their membership of Boko Haram, Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) as the case maybe.

“And swear Oath of Allegiance to be loyal, discipline and obedient citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and then make commitment.

“The commitment is that at the end of the programme, where they commit any offence, they stand to forfeit all privileges that they have acquired today and will be liable of offence against the State.”

Shafa reveled that since the operationalisation of the DRR programme in 2016, it had admitted 893 clients into camp while 280 including two Chadians had been transferred to their various national and state authorities.

The Borno State Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Zuwaira Gambo, said there was already a structure on ground in Borno to continue from where the DRR programme stopped.

“We will provide them with psycho-social supports, continue with religious admonition in order to make them good citizens of the country.

“We will also give them starter packs to help them practice the skills that had been acquired in the camp here,” she said.

The commissioner said that those earlier released to the Borno Government from the camp had been assimilated into the society and were doing well.

She disclosed that one of them makes N250, 000 from barbing on monthly basis and had employed several youths.

In an interview with newsmen, Mr Jasper Ukachukwu, Senior Programme Officer, Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) said the idea of setting up the panel was to ensure some level of accountability in the DRR programme.

“So that even when they step out of here they will also be held accountable to any offence they may commit,” he said.

Ukachukwu said that the programme was sending the right message to those insurgents who are still fighting for the Boko Haram group, adding that there had been success stories from the programme.

“When you are in the group and you are tired and want to come out of the bush, you need to see what is happening to others; so the DRR programme is sending the right message,” he said.

Jack Ma cashes out on Alibaba, firm’s filing reveals

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd co-founder Jack Ma has cut his stake in the company over the past year to 4.8 per cent from 6.2 per cent, cashing out around 8.2 billion dollars at its current share price, the firm’s annual filing released on Friday showed.

The divestment comes as Jack retired as the Chinese e-commerce company’s executive chairman in September and pulled back from formal business roles to focus on philanthropy.

Alibaba did not disclose the average selling price of his divestment.

Its share price has risen around 40 per cent since jack reported his 6.2 per cent holding in the company a year ago.

The stock’s stellar performance has been helped by forecast-beating earnings growth, even as China’s economy sharply slows, as more people shop online for essentials due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Alibaba Executive Vice Chairman Joseph Tsai also reduced his stake in the company over the same period, to 1.6 per cent from 2.2 per cent.

The offloaded shares were worth 3.3 billion dollars as of Friday.

Both Jack and Joseph have been steadily less involved in Alibaba’s regular operations since Daniel Zhang was announced as Ma’s successor as company chairman.

He assumed that role formally in September 2019.

Throughout this year, the two have donated millions of units of personal protective equipment (PPE) via their individual charity arms to hospitals worldwide to help fight the spread of COVID-19.

An April 2019 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission stated that Jack would plan to sell up to 21 million shares within one year to support his philanthropic efforts.

COVID-19 guidelines: FRSC arrest 1,460 drivers in Lagos

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Sector Command, said it impounded 1,460 vehicles for violating COVID-19 guidelines against overloading in the state between April and June.

The Sector Commander, Mr Olusegun Ogungbemide, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Monday.

Ogungbemide said the command had started the tour of motor parks in the state to monitor and sensitise transport operators to enhance adherence to COVID-19 public transport guidelines.

“We have been able to clamp down on 576 drivers in Lagos for overloading of vehicles with passengers and goods.

“We also arrested 827 drivers for overloading their vehicles with passengers against COVID-19 protocols.

“In all, we have arrested a total of 1,460 between April and June for overloading.

“Road users should know that FRSC will not condone anything that will enhance the spread of COVID-19 pandemic through land transport that happens to be under the purview of the corps.

“We are not going to compromise our enforcement,’’ he told NAN.

Ogungbemide enjoined commuters to support the corps and the nation in the efforts to stop the spread of the pandemic.

“So, in order for the commuters not to get themselves involved in unnecessary inconvenience through enforcement by our men, they should desist from boarding an overloaded vehicle.

“We are also pleading with transport stakeholders, especially transport unions, to try and comply with the COVID-19 protocols by reducing the passengers they carry to 50 per cent capacity of their vehicles.

“Transport unions and other stakeholders must make sure that drivers, conductors and passengers use face masks.

“There should also be water and soup at their terminals and motor parks with sanitisers.’’

He said that the corps’ tour of motor parks, which began on Friday, would be a continuous exercise to ensure that all motor parks comply with guidelines for the prevention of coronavirus.

  • Man City back to Champions League after ban lifted

Man City back to Champions League after ban lifted

Manchester City’s two-year ban from European football has been overturned by the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS), the Lausanne based court said on Monday.

The decision means Pep Guardiola’s team will compete in next season’s Champions League.

CAS ruled that City did not breach Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules by disguising equity funding as sponsorship.

The court also reduced a fine for failing to cooperate with UEFA to 10 million euros (£8.93 million) from 30 million euros.

“Most of the alleged breaches reported by the (UEFA) Adjudicatory Chamber of the CFCB were either not established or time-barred,” CAS said in a statement.

UEFA, European soccer’s governing body, had ruled in February that City had committed serious FFP breaches and failed to cooperate with its investigation.

Missing out on the Champions League would have cost City, who have denied wrongdoing, as much as 100 million pounds in prize money and broadcast revenue, as well as matchday and other revenues.

The FFP regulations are designed to stop clubs running up big losses through spending on players.

They also ensure sponsorship deals are based on their real market value and are genuine commercial agreements — and not ways for owners to pump cash into a club to get around the rules.

COVID-19: FCT Perm Sec tests negative, resumes work

Mr Christian Ohaa, Permanent Secretary, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), on Monday resumed work after testing being discharged from isolation centre and testing negative to COVID-19.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ohaa, asymptomatic, tested positive for the virus two weeks ago.

NAN reports that upon testing positive, the office of the permanent secretary was immediately shut down and his staff as well as all directors in the administration were directed to undergo compulsory COVID-19 tests.

Similarly, Dr Mohammed Kawu, Acting Secretary, FCTA Health and Human Services Secretariat, has been discharged from the Asokoro District Hospital, Abuja, after he tested negative for COVID-19.

NAN reports that the acting secretary had announced that he and some members of his family contracted the disease about two weeks ago.

Kawu recounting his experience as a COVID-19 patient, said he had moderate to severe symptoms.

“I developed chest infection, so I had to be on antibiotics for some days. But thank God, myself and members of my family do not have the symptoms any more and we have been discharged from the isolation centre,”he said.

He said the final tests conducted on them returned negative which prompted their discharge.

The acting secretary, therefore, warned against stigmatising victims of the disease, saying ” even me, I was not spared.

” I heard that people around the neighborhood where I live were spreading the news in fear. So we need to really work on the stigma issue,” he said.

  • Xavi will be Barca coach sooner – Bartomeu

Xavi will be Barca coach sooner – Bartomeu

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has admitted Xavi will become the club’s manager “sooner or later” but revealed the club is ready to back Quique Setien for next season.

The Catalans have struggled to impress under Setien and are currently second in La Liga with Real Madrid in pole position to claim the league title.

That situation, combined with Barcelona’s lacklustre displays, has led to speculation Setien could be replaced at the season’s end with Xavi himself preparing for a return to Camp Nou as a manager.

“Xavi will be Barca’s coach, sooner or later. But right now we are not looking for a coach, we are with Quique,” Bartomeu told TV3.

“Quique Setien will coach the team in the Champions League and these last two Liga games that are left.

“We have had a very atypical season, we will play in August and he will be the coach. If we overcome Napoli, we will be in Lisbon.

“Our will is to fulfil contracts and Setien has one. We went to Setien’s house to speak about the future, the plans for next season. He will probably be there and I am very interested to hear what he thinks.

“He has a lot of time for Riqui Puig and Ansu [Fati]. We have seen Pedri and [Francisco] Trincao in form, there is hope.”
