Funke Akindele heads to court to challenge her conviction

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday adjourned until July 21, to hear a suit challenging the legality of the conviction of Funke Akindele, her husband, Abdu-rasheed Bello, and 236 others.

A Lagos-based Lawyer, Mr Olukoya Ogungbeje, had approached the court seeking a declaration that the law upon which Akindele and others were convicted was inconsistent with the 1999 constitution.

Recall that Akindele, a popular actress; Bello, and others were arrested, tried and convicted for violating the Lagos State Infectious Diseases (Emergency Prevention) Regulations 2020.

She was said to have hosted a birthday party in her Lagos residence to celebrate her husband’s birthday, an act viewed as a violation of the state government’s regulation on infectious disease prevention.

Akindele rose to prominence for her series, Jenifa’s Diary broadcast on national television.

The case challenging the convictions, which was earlier slated for hearing on Friday before Justice Maureen Onyetenu, could not proceed following applications before the court.

When the case was called, a senior counsel from the office of Attorney General of Lagos State, Mr Jonathan Ogunsanya, informed the court of a notice of preliminary objection challenging the suit.

The said Notice of Preliminary objection was served on the plaintiff’s counsel, Mr Fatai Adebanjo.

Ogunsanya had also informed the court of a motion on notice seeking to regularise his processes before the court.

Consequently, Justice Onyetenu further adjourned the case until July 21 for substantive hearing.

According to the plaintiff, (Ogungbeje) the arrest, arraignment, trial, conviction and sentencing of Akindele and others is lacking in merit.

He said that the offence for which they were convicted was unknown to the law and could not be a ground for any criminal liability.

“I have a duty to protect and defend the sanctity of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from any contravention or infraction,” he said.

Citing an Appeal Court’s decisions in 2016 involving Faith Okafor vs Lagos State and another, Ogungbeje avers that a violation of such regulation could not result in criminal liability.

  • Osinbajo’s daughter, Kiki claims ‘self-made’

    Osinbajo’s daughter, Kiki claims ‘self-made’

Kiki Osinbajo, one of the daughters of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said like many young women in Nigeria, she works hard, and that it may be difficult… to understand that a young woman can work hard and succeed on her own steam.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the Vice President’s daughter stated this against an allegation of how she is able to earn N800 million to invest in a property housing her Glamd Africa Beauty House.

However, according to Kiki, the property housing her Glamd Africa Beauty House, located on 10 Durban Street, Wuse 2, Abuja belongs to one Mr Musa Adams.

“For me it is completely unbelievable that a grown man will sit in his home and lie about me, a grown man who possibly has children my age!

“Like many young women in Nigeria I work hard, it may be difficult for people like him to understand that a young woman can work hard and succeed on her own steam.

“Anyone can verify the ownership of the property of Glamd Africa at Agis in Abuja. I am a tenant in that property. My landlord’s name is Mr Musa Adams,” she stated.

Just recently, controversial journalist and former presidential spokesperson, Jackson Ude, took to his Twitter handle to accuse Kiki of having funny dealings.

Ude, in his tweet, claimed the VP’s daughter invested N800 million in the property housing her beauty house in Abuja. He then proceeded to ask how she was able to afford that money.

But, responding to the allegation on her Instagram page, Kiki appeared to be claiming self-made.

Ude’s allegation against Kiki is part of broader allegations against VP Osinbajo by the former presidential aide as a presidential committee opens probe against the former acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Ibrahim Magu.

Ude is claiming that Osinbajo is involved in shady deals, and that the VP “has no credibility”.

BREAKING: INEC expresses concern over election campaigns in Edo

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed concern that as campaigns begin for the governorship election in Edo State, campaign councils rather than candidates and party manifestos are taking centre stage.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Festus Okoye Esq, National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee for the INEC expressed the concern in a statement, following the regular weekly meeting of the Commission held on Thursday.

The INEC official, while reminding political parties to comply with protocols emplaced for Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) during campaigns, stated that the election should be a contest of ideas and programmes for the people of Edo to make informed decisions for the development of the State.

“Political parties are hereby reminded that in canvassing for votes, they must comply with the Commission’s policy on Conducting Elections in the Context of the COVID- 19 Pandemic as well as the Regulations and Guidelines governing same. They must also comply with the guidelines issued by health authorities.

“At the same time, parties are enjoined to conduct issue-based campaigns in accordance with the Regulations and Guidelines issued by the Commission. They should appeal to their supporters to shun inflammatory rhetoric and disruptive behaviour capable of breaching the peace. The election is an opportunity for the people of Edo State to choose among the 14 candidates in the contest.

“The Commission is concerned that as campaigns begin, campaign councils rather than candidates and party manifestos are taking centre stage. The election should be a contest of ideas and programmes for the people of Edo to make informed decisions for the development of their State,” he stated.

Okoye further stated that going by the timetable and schedule of activities for the election, campaigns by political parties in public commenced on 21 June 2020 and ends on 17th September 2010 i.e. 24 hours before polling day as enshrined in Section 99 (1) of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).

    Missing Seoul mayor found dead

The missing 64-year-old Mayor of South Korean capital Seoul, Park Won Soon, has been found dead, the news agency Yonhap reported on Thursday.

His body was found by police in the northern part of the city, the news agency said, citing police.

Park had been reported missing earlier by his daughter after saying something that sounded like “last words,” according to the report.

Police had conducted a search for the 64-year-old using drones and tracking dogs, although by 7 pm (1000 GMT) no sign of Park was reported.

The mayor left his apartment earlier on Thursday, saying something that sounded like “last words,” his daughter was quoted as saying.

  • Governor detained for allegedly ordering murders 15 years ago

Governor detained for allegedly ordering murders 15 years ago

Gov. Sergei Furgal of Russia’s far-eastern Khabarovsk region was detained on Thursday on suspicion of having ordered multiple murders allegedly committed by an organized criminal group about 15 years ago.

Furgal, governor for the past two years, is considered the “organiser of an attempted murder and the murder of a number of business people” in 2004 and 2005, according to a statement by Russia’s top investigative agency.

Four alleged members of the criminal group have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in those crimes, committed in Khabarovsk and the neighbouring Amur region, the Investigative Committee said in a statement.

He was implicated during questioning of those suspects, state media reported, citing the Investigative Committee.

Furgal, 50, was brought to the capital, Moscow, for further investigative procedures, state media reported. He was to be officially charged, with a court appointed to decide whether he should remain in custody.

Furgal, of the populist Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR), won the 2018 election against the long-time incumbent, Vyacheslav Shport, who had represented the party most loyal to President Vladimir Putin, United Russia.

He was reportedly elected upon a rise of anti-establishment sentiment in the region.

“This is a very big political case,” LDPR leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky said in comments carried by Russian state news agency TASS. He emphasized that the party would defend Furgal.

He was detained in the morning outside his home while he was heading to work, state media reported.

Images from the scene showed him wearing a suit and tie while being pulled from a black Lexus SUV by armed officers in camouflage, their faces covered with headgear.

Furgal, an educated medical professional, previously worked as a doctor at a state hospital for seven years until 1999, when he went into the private sector, according to a biography on the Khabarovsk administration’s website.

He was elected as a regional lawmaker in Khabarovsk in 2005 and went on to be appointed to the federal parliament two years later. He served in Russia’s lower house of parliament for 11 years, from 2007 to 2018.

  • Nigerians to start enjoying Internet speed of 25 Mbps at N390 per 1GB

Nigerians to start enjoying Internet speed of 25 Mbps at N390 per 1GB

The federal government has designed a new broadband plan for Nigerians to start enjoying Internet speed of minimum 25 Mbps in urban areas and 10 Mbps in rural areas, with effective coverage available to at least 90% of the population at a price not more than N390 per 1 GB of data.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports a committee known as the Broadband Implementation Steering Committee to achieve this aim was inaugurated on Thursday by Dr Isa Ali Pantami, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy.

The Internet speed of 25 Mbps in the country means that Nigerians can have Internet fast enough to stream 4k videos without any buffering, about 15 people could happily watch a different Netflix film, and a company employing 40 people would not complain about the internet speed.

The Broadband Implementation Steering Committee is expected to monitor the implementation of the Nigerian National Broadband Plan (2020-2025) which was unveiled and launched by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

According to the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, in order to achieve the target, the broadband plan focused on recommendations in 4 critical pillars: infrastructure, policy/spectrum, demand drivers and funding/incentives.

“The plan targets the deployment of nationwide fibre coverage to reach all State capitals, and a point of presence in at least 90% of Local Government Headquarters. It also targets tertiary educational institutions, major hospitals in each State and 60% of base stations by 2025 at statutory rates of N145/meter for Right of Way (RoW).

“Our engagement with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum has inspired several state governments to adopt the N145/meter and a few of these States have even waived the fee altogether. His Excellency, President Buhari, GCFR also directed the security agencies to protect all Critical National Infrastructure,” Pantami stated.

The Minister highlighted a report by Ericsson titled “How Important Are Mobile Broadband Networks for Global Economic Development”, stressing that 10% increase in mobile broadband penetration results in approximately 0.6% to 2.8% rise in gross domestic product (GDP).

He stated that broadband supports the development of the digital economy and that a focus on growing the national digital economy will also improve the nation’s traditional economy.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the contribution of ICT to the Gross Domestic Product of Nigeria was 14.07% in the 1st Quarter of 2020; this Pantami said was unprecedented and that it reflects how much of an impact technology, including broadband, can have on the economy, if channelled properly.

“The growth that results from affordable and reliable broadband will enable us get a slice of the Global Digital Economy, which Oxford Economics values at $11.5 trillion dollars or approximately 16% of the Global Economy. This value is expected to grow significantly over the coming years.

“The World Economic Forum predicts that over 60% of global GDP will be digitized by 2022 and that over the next decade, digital platforms will be used to create close to 70% of new value. Most nations are prioritizing the need to develop their digital economies because they realize the multiplier effect that this can have on all other sectors of the economy.

“For instance, according to a 2018 Report by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) on “Defining and Measuring the Digital Economy”, the digital economy in the United States contributed 6.9% to the nation’s GDP in 2017. It also contributed 5.1million jobs in that year. The 2019 Digital Trade and U.S. Trade Policy also noted that almost two-thirds of all the jobs created in the United States since 2010 required medium or advanced levels of digital skills. In Nigeria, we are keen to develop a digital economy that will have a great impact on every sector of Nigeria’s economy.

“The new broadband plan is designed to deliver data download speeds across Nigeria of a minimum 25Mbps in urban areas, and 10Mbps in rural areas, with effective coverage available to at least 90% of the population by 2025 at a price not more than N390 per 1GB of data (2% of median income or 1% of minimum wage).

“In order to achieve these ambitious targets, the plan focused on recommendations in 4 critical pillars, namely: Infrastructure, Policy/Spectrum, Demand Drivers, Funding/Incentives,” Pantami stated.

Stressing further on the benefits of increased broadband penetration to the economy, the Minister said it impacts positively on jobs creation, sustainable economic growth and higher standard of living.

    He explained: “According to the Fibre to the Home Council Europe a 25 million EUR investment in information and communications technology (including smart grid and broadband) would create or retain 700,000 jobs, of which 360,000 would be small business jobs; Socio-economic development, leading to growth in e-health, e-education, e-government, etc;

“According to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Broadband Series, broadband contributes to economic growth through “(1) more efficiency in business processes, (2) acceleration of innovation by introducing new consumer applications and services (e.g. new forms of commerce and financial intermediation) and (3) more efficient functional deployment of enterprises by maximizing their reach to labour pools, access to raw materials, and consumers (e.g. outsourcing of services, virtual call centres)”.

Perhaps, the most notably of the allegations is that Hushpuppi is involved in a scheme to steal $124 million from an English Premier League soccer club in May 2019.

However, Hushpuppi’ lawyer, Gal Pissetzky, of Pissetzky & Berline, told Forbes that his client is an entrepreneur.

The legal representative said his client is “Absolutely not guilty of [the] charges they are accusing him of,” adding, “[Abbas] was running a legitimate business and a very legitimate Instagram account and did not take part in any scam or fraud.”

Asked how Abbas paid for his lifestyle, Pissetzky told Forbes, “He’s an entrepreneur. He has real estate involvement … [he’s] an Instagram personality. He was promoting brands and that’s how he was very legitimately making his money”.

Meanwhile, according to the Bureau of Prisons website, Hushpuppi is currently being held in MCC Chicago pending a bail hearing.

If convicted, according to the police press statement following his arrest, the 37-year-old would face a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years in a federal prison.

Police ignored George Floyd’s ‘I can’t breathe’ plea: transcript

The former U.S. police officer charged in the death of George Floyd told him to stop shouting and save his breath as he knelt on his neck and Floyd gasped for air, according to a newly released transcript of police body camera footage.

The death of Floyd, a Black man, in police custody on May 25 led to anti-racism protests and demonstrations against police brutality across the U.S. and around the world with protesters calling for racial equality and police reforms.

“Tell my kids I love them. I’m dead,” Floyd said during the nearly nine minutes that the officer knelt on him as he went lifeless.

Floyd pleaded for help as he was pinned to the ground, according to the transcript made public on Wednesday as part of a motion filed in the Minneapolis state court.

“I’m through, through. I’m claustrophobic. My stomach hurts. My neck hurts. Everything hurts. I need some water or something, please. Please? I can’t breathe officer,” he said.

“You’re going to kill me, man,” Floyd said.

Derek Chauvin, the officer who knelt on Floyd, replied: “Then stop talking, stop yelling, it takes a heck of a lot of oxygen to talk.”

Chauvin, who is white, was arrested on May 29, four days after Floyd’s death. He has pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree murder and manslaughter.

Three other former Minneapolis police officers, who are white, Black and Asian American, have been charged with aiding and abetting in the case.

At one point, one of those officers, Thomas Lane, suggested that Chauvin roll Floyd on his side, according to the transcript.

“No, he’s staying put where we got him,” Chauvin responded.

All four of the officers have been fired from the Minneapolis police department. None of them entered a plea during a brief hearing on June 29.

The transcript was made public as part of an effort by Lane’s lawyer to have charges that he aided and abetted Floyd’s murder thrown out by a judge, according to U.S. media.
