Super Eagles: Finidi George’s appointment sparks reaction

A renowned Sports Analyst, Tayo Balogun has said that the appointment of Finidi George as the Super Eagles head coach was long overdue.

Balogun said this in Ibadan on Tuesday, stressing that it was surprising that NFF waited this long to make the appointment.

“In view of the Eagles tight schedule, one would have expected that immediately José Peseiro said he was leaving, George should have been upgraded to continue with the plans already on ground.

“Giving all the statistics and all things involved I think there was no choice than to appoint him because he worked with Peseiro for 20 months and also as an interim manager.

“He had earlier coached a football team in Nigeria. He knows the terrain. He might not have been involved in the politics of Nigeria football, but every other thing he knows and he’s home grown.

“With organisation and dedication, I see no reason why we can’t qualify ahead of Rwanda, Benin Republic and South Africa in our group.

“After working with Peseiro, who was a defensive minded coach, he’ll have to pick his own style. In the next few matches, I’ll want him to be very cautious,”he said.

Balogun said that if we love Nigeria, this is the time for us all to come together and support George.

“His salary should be decided, mode of payment as and when due. I prefer that George is the chosen one over a foreign coach who won’t know much about Nigerian football and its terrain.

“There are advantages in having a foreign coach, but there are many more disadvantages,” he said.

The NFF on Monday announced the appointment of George as the Super Eagles head Coach.

George in interim capacity edged Ghana 2-1 in the first match, ending an 18-year winless streak against the Black Stars, but lost 0-2 to Mali in the second game.

Ex-internationals urge Finidi to be professional, firm

Meanwhile, ex-internationals have advised the newly appointed Super Eagles head coach, Finidi George to be professional and firm in his judgement as he assumes his new coaching  role.

The players gave the advice in separate interviews on Tuesday in Lagos.

Baldwin Bazuaye,  a member of Nigeria’s squad which won the 1985 FIFA U-16 World Championship in China, urged George  to ensure professionalism in his conduct.

“It is a good thing that the NFF has deemed it fit to appoint a former player in person of George as the coach of the team.

“We should give kudos to the NFF for this opportunity and getting them involved in the affairs of the national teams.

“My advice for George is that he must be professional in his dealings with the players. I believe he can do it and will succeed.

“The job of the Super Eagles is a serious one and George must be diligent in handling the affairs of the team. He must make his selection based on merit and shun nepotism,” he said.

The 1990 African Nations Cup silver medalist, urged the NFF to give Geroge a free hand to work and learn from his own mistakes.

“George must be fair to all and also be ready to listen to other people’s advice,” he said.

On his part, Edema Fuludu hailed the choice of George by the NFF to handle the Super Eagles.

“Fortunately, I have always advocated for a home-based coach for our national team. For me, it is not Eldorado yet, because we want results.

“I have also advocated that NFF should give any local coach appointed a formal contract and let him have authority as the manager of the team.

“George should be allowed to make his decisions without interference, although the technical committee of the NFF also wants the best for the team,” he said.

Fuludu advised George to run an open door policy in managing the affairs of the team.

“I will advise him to shun anything that will be detrimental to his progress. If he is not allowed to work as he ought to, he should speak.

“George must also be proactive and bring those he can work with into the team and in terms of selection; he must ensure an all-embracing team,“he said.

He urged George to also give the home based players the opportunity to showcase their talents.

Super Eagles: Akanni calls for support for Finidi

Similarly, ex-International Waidi Akanni, has called on  the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to give the newly appointed Head Coach of the Super Eagles, Finidi George  the support he needs to succeed  in his new role.

Akanni made the call in an interview on Tuesday in Lagos.

“It’s what we expected, a good home based coach, with everyone’s unflinching support and George’s experience I’m positive that he will do well.

“I hope he gets the support he needs from the federation, that’s very crucial to his success, with that we will have a beautiful team that we can have confidence in.

“I look forward to seeing beautiful football with positive results,” he said.

George, spent 20 months as assistant to José Peseiro before the Portuguese`s resignation following the accomplishment of Africa Cup of Nations runner-up position at Cote d’Ivoire 2023.

He took charge of the squad in interim capacity during two friendly matches in Morocco in March.

His squad edged Ghana 2-1 in the first match, ending an 18-year winless streak against the Black Stars, but then lost 0-2 to Mali in the second game.

NFF appoints Finidi George as Head Coach of Super Eagles

The Board of Nigeria Football Federation on Monday approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Committee to appoint former ace winger Finidi George as Head Coach of the Senior Men National Football Team, Super Eagles.

George, who spent 20 months as assistant to José Santos Peseiro before the Portuguese voluntarily left the post following the accomplishment of Africa Cup of Nations runner-up position at Cote d’Ivoire 2023, took charge of the squad in interim capacity during two friendly matches in Morocco last month.

His squad edged Ghana 2-1 in the first match, ending an 18-year winless streak against the Black Stars, but then lost 0-2 to Mali in the second game.

George, a member of the so-styled ‘Golden Generation’ that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Tunisia and emerged the second most entertaining team in Nigeria’s debut at the FIFA World Cup finals in USA the same year, won 62 caps for Nigeria, including featuring at the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cup finals. He also won gold, silver and bronze medals from the 1992, 1994, 2000 and 2002 AFCON tournaments.

The 52-year-old former Ajax Amsterdam (The Netherlands) and Real Betis (Spain) forward, who made a scoring debut for fatherland in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Burkina Faso at the National Stadium, Lagos on 27th July 1991, also featured for Calabar Rovers and Sharks FC in the domestic scene before heading to Europe. He assisted Rashidi Yekini (of blessed memory) to score Nigeria’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal against Bulgaria in Dallas, USA on 19th June 1994.

George had actually scored the goal that took Nigeria to that FIFA World Cup debut, when he put Nigeria ahead against hosts Algeria in a crucial qualifier in Algiers on 8th October 1993. The match eventually ended 1-1 and earned Nigeria a ticket to the finals in America.

George’s immediate task will be to guide the Super Eagles to victory in two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin Republic in Uyo and Abidjan respectively, in a little over five weeks. The matches are must-win encounters, with the Super Eagles lagging behind in third place in Group C of the African campaign behind Rwanda and South Africa.

Confederation Cup: CAF picks Nigerian officials for Dream vs Zamalek clash

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed the Secretary-General of the Nigeria Football Federation, (NFF) Mohammed Sanusi to serve as match commissioner for the CAF Confederation Cup semi-final second-leg encounter between Dreams FC of Ghana and Egypt’s Zamalek.

Additionally, another Nigerian, Chukwudi Callistus Chukwujekwu has been appointed to serve as the referee assessor.

The semi final match slated for the Baba Yara Stadium, Kumasi, Ghana will hold on Sunday

Ghana’s Dreams FC, who are making their debut in the competition held Zamalek to a 0-0 draw in the first leg in Cairo last weekend.

They are undefeated at home in the competition with three wins and a draw.

A score draw will see Zamalek qualify on the away-goal rule.

They need an outright win to secure a ticket to the final of the CAF Confederation Cup in their debut season in the competition.

Should they qualify for final and eventually win it Dreams FC of Ghana could be resting the trophy in their cabinet as CAF is planning to scrap the competition as from next season.

According to report, the Confederation Cup could be replaced with the newly introduced African Football League, AFL.

The General Secretary of Nigeria Football Federation, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi has described as “shocking and very sad” report of the death of a one-time Member of the NFF Executive Committee, Mr. Stephen Gyebgon.

Reports said Mr. Gyebgon, who was a Member of the NFF Executive Committee during the administration of Alhaji Sani Lulu Abdullahi (2006-2010), died on Monday of protracted illness.

  • Amuneke in battle with two other foreign coaches for Eagles job as NFF trims list to three

Amuneke in battle with two other foreign coaches for Eagles job as NFF trims list to three

There are speculations that the Nigeria Football Federation, (NFF) have trimmed the shortlist of candidates to three from which one will be announced soon.

The shortlistd candidates are Emmanuel Amunike, Domenec Torrent and Antonio Conceicao.

“I think that, in the first place, it must have been a quite underwhelming set of applicants that these are the three best candidates,” Solace Chukwu, Site coordinator,  AfrikFoot NG reports.

“Conceicao has the strongest merit but Amuneke has not managed anywhere in a few years and Torrent has extremely limited success and/or experience as either a head coach or in international football.”

Amuneke appears to be the only local coach on the list .

The former Tanzania gaffer has excelled as coach of Nigeria’s U17 team, leading them to glory at the FIFA U17 World Cup.

He also led Tanzania to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations – their first in nearly 40 years.

However, Amunike’s record with Egypt’s Misr Lel Makkasa and Zambia’s Zanaco left much to be desired.

The 53-year-old coach also failed to help the Nigeria U20 team qualify for the AFCON in 2017.

Conceicao, 62, is no stranger to African football, having previously managed Cameroon.

He led the Indomitable Lions to a third-place finish at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil.

Since leaving the Cameroon position in 2022, Conceicao has been without a job.

Torrent is a former assistant to Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola,

The 61-year-old has worked closely with Guardiola throughout his coaching career, including stints at Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City.

Torrent has since transitioned into a head coach role himself. Apart from coaching Girona, he has managed in Major League Soccer (MLS) with New York City FC.

The Spaniard has also coached Brazilian Serie A club, Flamengo, and most recently led Turkish Super Lig side, Galatasaray.

It is believed that Torrent is a big favourite among NFF board members.

So, do those in the football house have an obsession with foreign coaches?

“That does seem to be the case. While some might attribute that to thinly veiled internalized prejudice against our own indigenous coaches, I think we also have to consider the fact that our indigenous coaches seldom do enough to test and prove themselves worthy.

“That, I feel, is the bigger issue. If a Nigerian coach went to, say, Morocco, South Africa or Egypt, and won league titles there, on what basis would anyone question their viability?

“Keshi qualified Togo for a World Cup and took charge of Mali as well. When he was appointed, even those who had a problem with his personality could not say he was unqualified for the role,” Chukwu explains.

So, why should the NFF go ahead and appoint Amunike instead of a foreigner?

“Well, it depends on who the foreign person is, really,” Chukwu notes.

“I’m personally not persuaded any foreigner is better than Amunike (or any indigenous coach for that matter).

“However, speaking objectively, there is no Nigerian candidate who applied that combines international experience, (a measure of) success, and (if ongoing/recent employment can be considered a proxy for that) currency of ideas.”

  • Nigeria’s FA Cup renamed

    Nigeria’s FA Cup renamed

The Federation (FA) Cup, a Nigerian domestic football tournament, with teams drawn from the 36 states and the FCT, has been renamed “The President Federation Cup’’.

The renaming ceremony took place on Friday at a ceremony attended by the organisers and stakeholders at the Westhood Hotel Ikoyi, Lagos.

The tournament which began in 1945 as Challenge Cup and later renamed the Federation Cup will henceforth be known as `The President Federation Cup’.

The GTI Asset Management, strategic partners to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) in partnership with the Ministry of Sports Development jointly renamed the Federation Cup (FA).

Sports Development Minister, Sen. John Owan-Enoh, who applauded GTI Asset Management for taking on the responsibility of the cup, also urged stakeholders to focus on restoring the glory of the tournament.

He said: “Nigeria have a rich football history, optimised by prestigious competition like the Challenge Cup, which has captivated the nation since 1945 which has been renamed over the years.

“Today we gather to relaunch it as The President Federation Cup, we didn’t call it Bola Ahmed Tinubu Cup, but we want this name to be timeless by using the highest office in the land.

“I am pleased with GTI Asset Management, by signing the agreement with GTI, we aim to re-establish the benefits of this partnership, developing the grassroots, creating employment for approximately 500,000 Nigerians engaging over 100, 000, 000 enthusiasts.”

The minister urged the private sector stakeholders to borrow a leaf from GTI and adopt a sport to enhance all round development in sports.

“With our enormous population, we all can’t play football, I want to urge all stakeholders to emulate what the GTI group is doing with football through the NFF and NPFL.

“Let’s use this medium to showcase Nigeria’s greatness globally, the President Federation Cup is one of president Tinubu’s legacy of championing Nigerian football,” he said.

Similarly, NFF’s President, Ibrahim Gusau, lauded the GTI group for daring to do the importance with Nigeria football.

“When I heard of the GTI initiative, I had to dedicate time, I was at their office for four hours and I asked all mind-boggling questions, they were able to give me answers.

“I applaud them for taking this on, and I wish them success as they take on The President Federation Cup to make it bigger and better,” he said.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Sports Development, Atinuke Watti, also appealed to stakeholders to focus more on goal driven collaboration in order to develop sports at the grassroots.

Abubakar Lawal, the Group Managing Director of GTI Asset Management, said signing the deal made him a happy man.

Lawal, who also applauded the minister and NFF’s president, pledged his unflinching support to football development in Nigeria.

“I’m the happiest man on the planet. I’d like to thank the minister for his believe in us, his support to ensure that this partnership happens. My gratitude also goes to Alhaji Gusau for creating time to listen to us and supporting us.

“Football has gone beyond entertainment we are driving towards the business aspect of it, this is what will make our vision result oriented, we want our leagues to be better for it and the result is evident even on our rating table, it’s not business as usual.

“The President Federation Cup is set to witness a revolution, history is about to be made and we are happy about it,” he said.
