    Council officer arrested in Niger for illegal printing, sale of fake vehicle emblems

    Niger State Internal Revenue Service (NGSIRS) has caught up with members of a syndicate specialising in defrauding the state government.

    They include a revenue officer of Bosso Local Government Council and some private individuals who print and sell fake motor vehicle badges and emblems to unsuspecting members of the public.

    The NGSIRS stated in Minna on Saturday that their action ran afoul of the provisions of the Niger State Tax Administration and Consolidation Law (2022).

    It warned all persons or syndicates involved in the illegal collection of revenue or the printing and circulation of fake government documents and items to desist or face the law as would those arrested.

    “Printing and sale of licences, permits, emblems and stickers, receipts and number plates are statutory functions not delegated to private individuals.

    “Some members of these syndicates have been arrested and they include private individuals and government officials and they are set to be prosecuted,’’ it stated.

    The NGSIRS stressed that it was fully committed to tracking, identifying and bringing to justice all categories of persons involved in the despicable act of economic sabotage against the government and the people of Niger.

    It added that it remained resolute to deliver on its statutory mandate of optimal revenue generation by blocking all forms of leakages and prosecuting revenue generation saboteurs.

  • Niger State Government says No going back on roads closure to articulated vehicles

    Niger State Government says it will not go back on the restriction order of heavy trucks plying the state-owned roads which took effect on the 15th September, 2020.
    This is coming after the State government had assured that it’s position will be reviewed as event concerning the closure unfolds.
    The state government maintained that it’s decision to close down all state government roads was done within the confines of law stressing that adequate consultations and sensitization with relevant stakeholders were made and two weeks notice was also served to general public as well as relevant road transport organizations before the roads were barricaded.
    As such, the state government will not relent on it oars to ensure that the State owned roads are not access by articulated vehicles, the heavy trucks are however free to use all the Federal roads that transverse the State.
    The State government said beyond the current closure to fast track the reconstruction of the Minna-Bida Road, measures would be evolved such as weigh-bridges to ensure that the movements of articulated vehicles on the State owned roads are regulated to avoid heavy flow of traffic beyond the capacity of the roads.
    He enjoined the Federal government to raise up to the occasion and do the needful on if not all, some of the Federal Roads in the State.
    Chairman of the Infrastructure, Project Monitoring and Implementation Committee who is also the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Ibrahim Balarabe brief Journalists on behalf of the State government, reaffirming it’s position.
    “There is no going back on Niger state government’s decision on the ban on articulated trucks from plying the state-owned roads. We still stand on our position and will not relent on that. Our roads still remain closed to articulated trucks”. He stated.

    COVID-19: Niger Government orders workers to stay home from Monday

    The Niger State Government has directed all workers in Ministries, Departments and Agencies in the state to remain at home from Monday, 21st December 2020.

    The workers were asked to remain at home in a circular to MDAs signed by the Head of Service, Salamatu Abubakar in order to remain safe from the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

    The circular was titled, “Stay Free from 2nd Wave of Coronavirus Pandemic stated that only officials on essential duties were exempted.

    It stated, “Please, refer to the subject matter above. I write to inform you that in view of the 2nd wave of coronavirus pandemic being experienced in the country, His Excellency, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, Executive Governor of Niger State has approved for all workers in Niger State to stay at home with effect from Monday, 21 December 2020 until further notice, except Officers on essential services.”

  • Niger Govt salutes Abdulsalami Abubakar at 75

    The Niger Government has described former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, as a patriot who laid the foundation for the current democracy in the country.

    The government expressed the view in a statement in Minna on Tuesday, issued by Mr Jonathan Vatsa, the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, to mark Abubakar’s 75tth birthday.

    “Niger State Government extols the virtues of Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar as he marks his 75th birthday, his rare show of patriotism laid the foundation for the present day democracy in Nigeria.

    “His Excellency is a compatriot of immeasurable value, a man whose words are his honour.

    ‘’Though your reign was brief, Nigeria and Nigerians are the beneficiaries of the democratic foundation you laid.

    “ Your singular act of bravery saw to the enthronement of democracy and the re-positioning of Nigeria in the comity of nations.’’

    Vatsa described Abubakar as a committed and loyal officer as exemplified by his towering credentials in the military and emergence as Head of State.

    The commissioner said Abubakar was an agent of peace hence the international recognition and appointments he had received as ambassador of peace from global agencies

    “Your strong conviction in peaceful resolution of conflicts has brought peace to Liberia, Niger Republic, Southern Sudan and Guinea where you have been called upon to mediate,’’ he said.

    Vatsa said that the government and the good people of Niger were proud of Abubakar at 75 and prayed Allah to grant him long life.

    Abubakar assumed the leadership of Nigeria in June 1998 following the death of Gen. Sani Abacha.

    He organised elections to institute democratic governance in the country and handed over to democratically elected leaders on May 29, 1999.
