Several soldiers arrested after an attempted coup in Niger

An attempted coup in Niger on Wednesday has been aborted, with many soldiers arrested, according to sources.

The putsch staged by a military unit comes just two days before the country’s first ever peaceful transition of power.

President-elect Mohamed Bazoum is due to be sworn in on Friday — taking over from President Mahamadou Issoufou.

Residents of Niamey, the capital said there was “intense shooting, with heavy and light weapons,” from 3 a.m. local time.

The shooting around the presidential palace lasted about 30 minutes.

In videos posted on social media, the sound of short bursts of gunfire could be heard in the darkness.

Anonymous security sources told both Reuters that the situation was under control after assailants attempted to seize the palace.

The United States Embassy in Niamey issued a security alert saying it would not open its doors on Wednesday “due to gunshots heard near our neighbourhood.”

President-elect Bazoum defeated a former president Mahamane Ousmane, in the election run-off in February. But Ousmane alleged fraud.

Ousmane served as president for three years until a military coup toppled him in 1996. He has since tried to regain power, most recently through the February election.

Niger has had four coups since its independence from France in 1960.

The spread of deadly extremist violence has long plagued the West African country, with jihadi insurgencies spilled over from Mali and Nigeria.

Niger govt says no negotiation with bandits; moves to arm vigilante with pump-action guns

Governor Abubakar Sani Bello has promised to arm the vigilante group in Niger State with pump-action guns to enable them to confront bandits and address other security threats.

Speaking at Kasuwan Garba in Mariga Local Government Area of the state when he met with over 200 members of the vigilante in the area, Bello said the security volunteer groups would be armed to confront “these enemies of the people across the state.”

The visit was part of his morale booster for the vigilante groups across the state.

Attacks by bandits occasioned by killings and kidnappings are now a recurring decimal in the region, with the abductions of students adding a new dimension to the fragile security situation.

Some bandits in Niger and other states in the North West have called for the disbanding of the vigilante groups, saying that was the only condition for them to lay down their arms and embrace peace.

But Governor Bello has remained adamant, declaring that henceforth, all vigilante groups in the state would be provided with automatic pump-action guns to enable them to take the fight to the bandits wherever they were hiding.

The governor said there was no amount of threat from the bandits that would force the government to disband the vigilante groups in the state.

“We are not going to disband the vigilante as a result of threat from the bandits. Even when banditry activities in the state are stopped, the vigilante will still be there to provide security in the local government areas,” he said.

Governor Bello has also said the Niger State government will not go into any form of negotiation with bandits nor pay ransom for the release of kidnapped victims in the state.

He assured that any bandit that repented and surrendered his weapon will be reintegrated into the society and settled to live a normal life.

He said, “There will be no dialogue but any of them that repents and surrenders his weapons will be forgiven and we will compensate such bandits to live normal life in the society.”

The governor said he was in Kasuwan Garba, which is one of the areas under siege by constant banditry attacks, to identify with the vigilante members for the loss of their members who were killed while confronting the criminals.

While commending the efforts of vigilante members in the area, he urged them not to relent until the war was completely won.

“I understand that there is peace here now but we will not relent because we will not allow them (bandits) to succeed,” he said.

Earlier, the Chairman of Mariga Local Government Area, Alhaji Idris Suleiman, told the governor that 50 members of the vigilante picked from each of the four districts in the local government have successfully kept the activities of the bandits at bay, adding that “the people are having some level of peace across the 22 villages hitherto under siege by bandits.”

According to him, “The vigilantes are on top of the security situation in the area. What they need is modern equipment to be able to confront these bandits who are carrying automatic weapons.”

Bazoum declared winner of Niger’s presidential election

Niger’s ruling party candidate Mohamed Bazoum was declared on Tuesday the winner of its presidential election, while his opponent alleged fraud and opposition supporters burned tyres in the streets.

Bazoum, a 61-year-old former interior minister, won 55.75% of the vote in Sunday’s election, according to the electoral commission. He beat out Mahamane Ousmane, a former president who was toppled by a coup in 1996. The provisional results must still be confirmed by the constitutional court.

The election is meant to usher in Niger’s first transition from one democratically elected leader to another, with President Mahamadou Issoufou stepping down after two five-year terms.

Shortly before the results were declared, Ousmane’s campaign alleged widespread fraud, including the theft and stuffing of ballot boxes and threats against voters. It did not provide any evidence.

“We demand the immediate suspension of the publication of these results, which do not in any way take into account the expressed will of the Nigerien people for change,” Ousmane’s campaign manager said in a statement.

Outside Ousmane’s campaign headquarters and in other parts of the capital Niamey, his supporters protested by burning tyres. Police fired tear gas to disperse them.

The electoral commission has not yet commented on the allegations of irregularities.

The vote was also marred by two attacks that killed eight people in two regions of the country where Islamist militants are active, commission president Issaka Souna said.

Seven of the victims were election workers in the western Tillabery region, near the border with Mali, whose vehicle struck a landmine as they headed to the polls.
