Senate wants investigation into death of 30 miners in Niger

The Senate has mandated the Committee on Solid Minerals to investigate the cause of a rockslide in Farin Doki community, Shiroro Local Government of Niger.

The rockslide buried 30 informal miners alive in a gold mining site.

This followed the adoption of a motion at plenary on Thursday in Abuja on an “urgent need to address incident of the rockslide.”

The motion was sponsored by Sen. Mohammed Sani (APC-Niger East).

Sani said that on June 3, a catastrophic rockslide occurred at an open pit gold mine, resulting in 30 local informal miners being buried alive in the Farin Doki Community.

He said that the site was near Erena in Shiroro Local Government, Niger East Senatorial District.

Sani said the miners, in their quests for gold and lithium minerals, met their untimely death as the avalanche caved in; burying them under tons of rubbles.

He said the tragic incident underscored the urgent need for a holistic action to be taken to address the dangers faced and posed by local mining activities across the country.

Sani said it was imperative to secure the mining sites to forestall future occurrence and avoid further loss of life.

“This will go a long way to ensure that mining activities are conducted safely and legally to prevent future tragedies and improve the overall well- being of miners across the country,” he said.

He expressed worry that bodies of the deceased had yet to be recovered for proper burial by their respective families.

According to Sani, conscious efforts should be made by relevant agencies of government for the recovery of the bodies for burial.

He said given that Nigeria was desirous of diversifying its economy, adding that the mining sub-sector was lucrative enough and should be adequately exploited for the socio-economic development of the country.

“As such, the appropriate authorities should as a matter of urgency and necessity, initiate thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident so as to identify any existing lapses.

“As part of remedies to bring sanity to the system, strict regulations should be introduced in order to protect the lives of those who depend on this industry for their livelihood.

“It is also apt for relevant committees of the National Assembly to step up their oversight of mining activities across the country for the purpose of harnessing the benefits that abound in the sector,’’ he said.

The Senate, after observing a minute silence in honour of the victims, commended the Minister of Solid Minerals, Mr Dele Alake, for his swift response in monitoring the situation.

The Senate also urged the Federal Government to come out with strict safety measures and regulation on mining activities in Nigeria in line with international best practices.

The Senate also called for deployment of adequate security apparatus to the mining communities to maintain vigilance around mining areas to prevent further incursions and intrusion by informal miners.

It urged the National Emergency Management Agency and other relevant agencies of government to expedite actions on the recovery of the remains of the deceased in the catastrophe.

According to the upper chamber, such recovery will ensure that the bereaved families have final closure on their loved ones.

The Senate also urged the committee to accelerate the passage of the Mine Ranger Bill currently before the Senate.

Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger finalize plans to form Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States

Plans to form a bloc by the military administration of  three West Africa countries, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger have reached final stage.

The three countries will form Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States few years after turning their backs on former colonial ruler France to seek closer ties with Russia.

The foreign ministers of the three West African countries met Friday in Niger’s capital Niamey to agree on a text establishing the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

“The objective was to finalise the draft text relating to the institutionalisation and operationalisation of the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES)”, said Niger Foreign Minister Bakary Yaou Sangare as he read the final statement late Friday.

According to Sangare, the text would be adopted by the heads of state of the three countries at a summit, without specifying the date.

“We can consider very clearly, today, that the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) has been born,” Malian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop said after meeting General Abdourahamane Tiani, the head of Nigerien military regime.

The third foreign minister at the meeting was Burkina Faso’s Karamoko Jean-Marie Traore.

The Sahel region has been subject to deadly jihadist violence for years, which they accused France of not being able to curb.

The three countries said late January they were quitting The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which they said was under French influence, to create their own regional grouping.

Minister petitions IG over marriage plans for 100 orphans in Niger

Mrs Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, Minister of Women Affairs, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and sought for a court injunction to stop Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, Speaker of the Niger state Assembly from marrying off 100 orphaned girls.

It will be recalled that the speaker recently announced his plans to marry off the orphaned girls, who lost their parents due to banditry attacks in Mariga local government area as part of his constituency project on May 24.

He announced that the gesture is  “aimed at alleviating the suffering of the impoverished”, pledging to pay the dowries for the bridegrooms and have procured materials for the mass marriage.

Kennedy-Ohanenye, while briefing newsmen in Abuja described the plans as “unacceptable” emphasising that a full-scale investigation has commenced on the issue.

“I want to let the honorable speaker of house in Niger states to know that this is totally unacceptable by Federal Minister Of Women Affairs and by the government totally unacceptable.

“Because there is something called the  Child’s Right Act and I said it from the onset, that is no more business as usual.

“These children must be considered their future must be considered the future of the children to come out of their marriage must be considered.

“So I have gone to court. I have written him a letter and written a petition to the IG of police.

” And I have filed for injunction to stop him from whatever he is planning to do on the 24th, until a thorough investigation is carried out on those girls, find out whether they gave their consent, their ages, find out the people marrying them,” she said.

The minister, while emphasising on the need to ensure girl-child education and empowerment, stressed the need to…

“As the speaker did not think about empowering these women or sending them to school or giving them some kind of training support financially.

“The Women Affairs have decided to take it up and we are going to educate the children.

“Those that do not want to go to school, we will train them in a skill, empower them with sustainable empowerment machines to enable that child build his or her life and make-up her mind who and when to get married.

” If for any reason the Speaker tries to do contrary to what I have just mentioned there will be a serious legal battle between him and the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs,”she said.

The minister further emphasised within the Child Rights Act, every child belongs to the state, hence the rights of every child will be protected from harm, violence or anything that will infringe on their rights.

Just In: 119 inmates escape as rainstorm destroys prison, 10 recaptured

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) FCT Command, on Thursday said 119 inmates escaped from the Suleja Custodial Centre, in Niger State.

This is contained in a statement in Abuja on Thursday by Mr Samson Duza, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the command.

The FCT command is in charge of Kuje and Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centres in Abuja and Niger.

Duza explained that the incident followed a rainstorm that destroyed the Suleja facility on Wednesday night.

He said the service had immediately activated its recapturing mechanisms, in conjunction with sister security agencies.

According to him, the downpour has also wreaked havoc on the surrounding buildings and part of the custodial facility, including its perimeter fence.

”This gave way to the escape of a total of 119 inmates of the facility.

”But with the help of sister agencies, we have recaptured 10 of them and taken them into custody, while we are in hot chase to recapture the others.”

Duza stated that the Service was mindful  that many of its facilities were built during the colonial era, and had become old and weak.

He said in view of this, the service was making frantic efforts to see that all ageing facilities gave way for modern ones.

”This is evidenced in the ongoing construction of six 3,000-capacity ultra-modern custodial centres in all the geo-political zones in Nigeria.

‘‘This also includes the ongoing reconstruction and renovation of existing ones,” he said.

The FCT spokesman assured the public that the command was on top of the situation, and urged residents to go about their businesses without fear or hindrance.

He also enjoined the public to look out for the fleeing inmates and report any suspicious movement to the nearest security agency.

The Air Component of Operation Whirl Punch (OPWP) has destroyed terrorists’ logistics storage in Palele near Shiroro, on March 15.

AVM Edward Gabkwet, Director, Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air Force (NAF), said in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja that the air strike east of Palele in Niger, followed confirmation of cache of arms in the location.

He said the operation was executed with speed and precision resulting in significant damage to the target area, including a secondary explosion confirming the destruction of arms and ammunition.

According to him, the weapons are believed to be part of the arsenal of a wanted terrorist.

“These strikes have no doubt degraded the capabilities of terrorist elements operating in the region to attack innocent civilians, especially in Kaduna and Niger States.

“The NAF, along with other surface forces, will continue to maintain dominance over areas of concern through enhanced situational awareness, continuous patrols, and targeted interdiction of terrorists’ safe havens,” he added.

  • We did not ban movements of food items to other states – Bago clarifies

We did not ban movements of food items to other states – Bago clarifies

Gov. Umar Bago of Niger State has clarified misconceptions regarding the state’s stance on the mass purchase of food items from the state to other states in the country.

The governor said this while speaking with newsmen in Abuja on Monday.

Bago said he only stopped bulk purchases of food from local markets to neighbouring countries, adding that food items purchased in the state markets were not stopped from being taken to other states.

He said the decision was to regulate the level of sales and ensure people were not exploited by smugglers.

“We have markets in the local government headquarters; we have local markets in the bushes; now these aggregators, saboteurs, and even smugglers go to these villages.

“For a farmer to give you a bag of paddy, it may take him two to three days because it’s manual. Imagine arresting two hundred trucks of paddy crossing the Benin Republic from Niger State.

“You can imagine what it does to the market. Our factories here are starved; people take our paddies to the Benin Republic, mill it, bring it back, and exploit our people.”

He highlighted the challenges faced by local farmers, including exploitation by middlemen and smugglers who divert agricultural produce to international markets.

Bago stressed the importance of protecting local industries and ensuring fair market prices for farmers.

“So, what we did was say, let’s control the level of sales. We know how much you need as a farmer; you don’t need to sell everything overnight.

“Why is somebody luring you with excess cash, not minding the price?” he queried.

He further emphasized the detrimental effects of unchecked food exportation on the local economy, adding that Niger State’s factories were suffering due to the exploitation of agricultural resources.

“A bag that we sell for N40,000, somebody is giving you N100,000; obviously, you know there’s a problem, so the ban is addressing the food inflation in the state.

He said his effort was yielding results, and it was necessary to intensify as a country while restating his commitment to support local farmers and ensure food security within the country.

The governor said there was a need for collaborative efforts to address challenges in the agricultural sector and promote sustainable development.

The governor, while responding to the reaction of the citizens to economic hardship, stopped the bulk purchase of food from local markets.

However, some reports claimed that Bago banned the sale and purchase of foods in bulk from Niger State to other Nigerian states.

Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu is the current chairman of ECOWAS.
