  • A Nigeria Police farce and ‘Olimpotic’ politics – Owei Lakemfa

    By Owei Lakemfa.

I find it difficult to believe that Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State is a professor; the don does not adorn this toga. There is no aura of professorship around him, and to worsen matters, he speaks so simple English that even commoners can understand him.

This is why Governor Benedict Bengioushuye Ayade of Cross Rivers State scores quite high in my estimation. He is a professor of no mean repute, and when he speaks, he leaves you in no doubt that his words are those of a man of great leaning who has amassed so much academic medals that a professorial toga fits him like a high worth model on the catwalk.

I am most fascinated by the title of his budgets which deserve a Chair in a first rate university. He started modestly in 2016 with his budget of ‘Deep Vision’. It was like burrowing deep. But the title of his 2017 Budget, called ‘Infinite Transposition’ left no one in doubt that a professor had birthed in the port city of Calabar. People must have clapped for Ayade, but did the State House of Assembly which passed the budget interrogate at least the title? To transpose is to reverse, inverse, re-arrange or reorder which presupposes a definite action. To make such a restructuring “Infinite” as Ayade implied is to say whatever changes he might have in mind, would be eternal.

The title of his 2018 budget was a jaw breaker: “Budget of Kinetic Crystallization.” People who blame the State Assembly for rubber stamping should tell us what else to expect when they could not even understand the title of budgets they are supposed to interrogate?

Kinetic or kinematic, is energy; moving dynamics; a train-like locomotive which can clear obstacles in its path, while crystallization is its manifestation or illustration. Not to get confused like the State Assembly, I ducked into the Oxford dictionary to learn that: “Crystallization kinetics are characterized in terms of two dominant processes, nucleation kinetics and growth kinetics, occurring during crystallization from solution.” What has this to do with the budget of a state? Don’t ask me; direct your questions to the professor.

When 2019 birthed, Ayade felt the hapless people of Cross River have been tutored enough in English grammar to move to the next class. So he titled that, the Budget of “Qabalistic Densification”

The dictionary explains that being “cabalistic, kabbalistic, qabalistic or cryptic, is having a secret or hidden meaning that is confined to and understandable by only an enlightened inner circle” Having understood that, I flipped over to densification which is “an increase in the density of something. (such as) the increasing density of people living in urban areas.”

Having now understood the title of Ayade’s budget, I drank some water to wash it down only to be confronted by a more gargantuan budget title for the 2020 budget. A Budget of “Olimpotic Meritemasis” Ah, Ayade! You read book! This time, even the dictionaries could not help me understand what is “Olimpotic” The Oxford dictionary only says in Botany, what is meristematic, relates to or denotes “a region of plant tissue consisting of actively dividing cells forming new tissue (That is something) consisting of or having the properties of meristem or embryonic tissue in plants; undifferentiated, growing, actively dividing cells.” Understandeth what thou readest?

Well, Nigerians say a man who goes to his in-laws house speaking bombastic English, is the same person that will explain to them what he is talking about. So the Professor-Governor himself had to explain what the title of this budget is about. He said: “When you have an ambition that is not driven by economic and financial analysis, but a spiritual force beyond the normal, that is ‘Olimpotic’ and is ‘Meristemasis’ because it’s a rapid growth.”

Mercifully, for the 2021 budget, Ayade went soft and romantic. It is a “Budget of Blush and Bliss’’ To blush, especially for a White person, is to become red in the face. It is generally a reflection of the state of the mind. It can also be to have a fresh colour. On the other hand, bliss is a state of joy or happiness.

Ayade might have skilfully composed this title to provide some succour for Cross Riverians who have over the years been in a state of hopelessness; battered by economic storms, hunger hurricanes, cult violence and unprecedented kidnappings.

If you don’t understand all I have written about the pedantic Ayade, sorry, I can’t help you as I do not understand myself. However, his word ‘Olimpotic’ describes the state of the Nigeria Police Force which, as usual, is engaged in a farce. There is the seemingly unending circus of the Inspector General of Police, IGP and the Police Service Commission squaring it out in court over matters of jurisdiction despite both being appointees of the same President Muhammadu Buhari.

The country was in October, 2020 racked by street protests against the criminal and murderous aspects of the police Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS. Tentative figures given by government is that 57 civilians, 37 policemen and six soldiers were killed.

The National Economic Council headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbanjo with all state governors as members, directed the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to establish judicial panels to investigate the alleged police brutality, inquire into the protests and raise funds to compensate victims.

The panels are sitting in most states and a lot of national and international attention are on them especially the one in Lagos which is trying to unravel the shootings at the Lekki Tollgate.

Then last week the Police went to court suing the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, all 36 states and the National Human Rights Commission claiming that the panels are illegal and should be disbanded.

It is not clear why the police does not want the country to know what happened under its rogue SARS outfit or what it wants covered up in protests in which so many policemen were allegedly killed and police stations burnt. What does it hope to gain by trying to shoot down the panels?

It was quite intriguing that the police headed by an IGP appointed by the President, would sue the chief law officer of the country.

Nigerians may never know what happened, but what we know is that the Presidency reportedly washed its hands off the case, and the IGP followed, giving the impression that rogue elements heading its legal department took the unilateral decision to institute the now withdrawn case. We may assume that this is one more case of a government whose right arm does not know what its left arm is doing. However, I think it is more of ‘Olimpotic’ politics.

TRENDING: Nigeria Police under attack on social media for photoshopping images of suspects

The Nigeria Police Force, @PoliceNG has come under intense fire after it was alleged to have photoshopped major parts of an image shared on Twitter.

  • Travel ban: Fani-Kayode reacts, reveals why he can’t travel out of Nigeria

Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode has reacted to President Muhammadu Buhari’s Executive Order 6 banning him, Atiku Abubakar’s campaign Director General, a dead Chief Judge, and 48 others from travelling out of the country.
TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports Buhari signed Executive Order 6 banning Fani-Kayode; Atiku’s campaign DG, Otunba Gbenga Daniel; late Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice Professor I.A Umezulike, and a host of others from travelling abroad for alleged corrupt practices.
The list was generated from cases and proceedings filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the Nigeria Police, and 17 other agencies. The watch-list and restriction were put in place pending the conclusion of the cases against those affected.
“I could not give a damn that my name is on the list of 50 members of the opposition and prominent Nigerians that have been placed on a travel ban because nothing that Buhari does surprises me.
“I have not left Nigeria since 2008 because my passport has been with the EFCC and the courts for the last 10 years and they have refused to give it to me and let me to travel. Those on the travel-ban list that need to travel abroad for medical reasons or to see their loved ones are the ones I feel sorry for.
“For me, travel ban or no travel ban, I have no intention of leaving Nigeria anytime soon because I am one of those that will be on the forefront in the struggle to liberate our country and ensure that we get Buhari out of power over the next few months,” Fani-Kayode stated on Sunday.
Explaining the government’s action in a statement on Saturday, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu said, “Following the instant judicial affirmation of the constitutionality and legality of the Executive Order 6 (EO6), President Muhammadu Buhari has mandated the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice to implement the Order in full force.
“To this end, a number of enforcement procedures are currently in place by which the Nigeria Immigration Service and other security agencies have placed no fewer than 50 high profile persons directly affected by EO6 on watch-list and restricted them from leaving the country pending the determination of their cases.”
A top government official, who reportedly spoke to The Nation newspaper in confidence, said there is no cause for alarm on E06.
The source said: “The ban is not different from the conditions given by the court in granting these accused persons bail. The E06 is like a codification of steps to prevent those on trial for alleged corrupt practices from tampering with assets.
“Some of these accused persons used to go to court for permission before they can travel out of the country. The E06 is not a new thing but instead of all agencies working at cross-purposes, a list was generated and backed with the Executive Order.
“Some of those on trial, especially the Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs) had been selling their assets. What will they return after being convicted?”

  • Breaking: Dino Melaye returns from “the wilderness”

Senator Dino Melaye, who was allegedly abducted by unknown gunmen on Thursday, has regained freedom and returned from what he referred to as “the wilderness”.

The Kogi West Senator took to his official Twitter handle to make known his freedom on Friday morning.

TheNewsGuru reports Senator Ben Bruce of Bayelsa East escalated the alleged abduction of the Kogi Senator on his Twitter page yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police had said they never received any complaint or report in any of its Police Stations or Divisions throughout the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of the alleged abduction.

“I thank God once again for escaping another dangerous attack. I also thank Nigerians for their prayers and show of Love. Spent 11 hours in the wilderness traumatized but God preserved me. God is the best and in whom ONLY I trust. They will continue to try. WE SHALL OVERCOME,” Melaye tweeted shortly after his release.

Melaye was on Wednesday arraigned before an FCT High Court in Apo, Abuja on a six-count charge bordering on attempted suicide. He was billed to be arraigned in another court on Thursday before the news of his alleged abduction hit the airwaves.

“I have just been informed by Moses Melaye, @dino_melaye’s brother, that Dino has been abducted by unknown persons in a Toyota Sienna that blocked their car and overpowered them on their way to Kogi to answer to Dino’s court case. Lets be on the watch out. Will keep you updated,” Bruce tweeted.

The alleged abduction forestalled his arraignment on Thursday.

The Police, in a statement by Police spokesperson Jimoh Moshood, said the Force Headquarters only read of the news of Mr Melaye in the media, but has no unique details about the development.

“The Nigeria Police Force have not received any complaint or report in any of its Police Stations or Divisions throughout the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) or any other State of the Federation of the kidnap of Senator Dino Melaye from any of his family member, friend, associate or staff to indicate that the Senator has been kidnapped.

“The attention of the police was drawn to the report of the purported kidnap of Senator Dino Melaye in some sections of the media,” Mr Moshood, an acting deputy police commissioner, said.

The spokesperson, however, said investigation would be conducted into the matter, urging anyone with actionable information to pass such to authorities.

The police have “commenced investigation into the purported kidnap of Senator Dino Melaye, and wish (sic) to implore any of his family members, relatives or friends who witnessed the kidnap or have information about the purported kidnap of the senator to report the incident at the nearest police station to assist the police in the investigation,” Mr Moshood said.

The statement contradicted what Gideon Ayodele, a spokesperson for Mr Melaye, had earlier issued to newsmen.

The aide said the police in Gwagwalada, a suburb of Abuja, were informed about the alleged kidnap on Thursday morning.

The police in Kano on Sunday has arrested the immediate past governor of Jigawa, Alhaji Sule Lamido.

According to a report by News Agency of Nigeria, Lamido was arrested for allegedly inciting his supporters to stop the conduct of state’s upcoming local council polls.

NAN reports that the arrest of Lamido may be connected with a programme aired on one of the Kano local radio stations.

Sule Lamido was alleged to have directed his supporters, during the programme, to ensure that they win the local governments elections by all means.

The former governor was said to have been arrested at his Sharada Kano residence in the early hours of Sunday by the Zonal Investigative Bureau unit of Zone One Command of the Nigeria Police in Kano.
