Japa waves: Plumber, Solider .. Nigerian actors who dumped Nollywood for other professions abroad

There has been a surprising career shift amongst Nollywood actors/ actresses as many are currently leaving Nollywood’s glamourous limelight in doves to start new lives abroad.

The ‘Japa’ wave isn’t new, but it’s been making headlines in recent years as more and more Nigerians, celebrities inclusive, seek stability and better prospects abroad. Whether you’re an actor, teacher, or tech guru, the allure of steady income, career growth, and – let’s not forget – constant electricity is hard to ignore.

These entertainers, in a bid to chase “greener pastures,” dived into a different fields, transforming themselves into medical doctors, nurses, soldiers, and information experts.

“I know you as a producer and actor, what career are you into this Yankee?” Daddy Freeze asked to which Bassey replied, “I’m into construction here. I do construction; I am a plumber.”

Taken aback by the Nollywood actor’s response, the media personality questioned his transition despite his fame.

“In the last seven months, the province I have visited just on weekends in Canada, even person wey dey do tech no fit afford am. For here, I don’t know about the UK or the US,” Bassey said in pidgin.

  • Veteran Nollywood actor, Charles Awurum exposes secrets of Nigerian actors

Veteran Nollywood actor, Charles Awurum exposes secrets of Nigerian actors

Veteran Nollywood actor and comedian, Charles Awurum, has exposed the secrets of Nigerian actors and what they do to get a role in a movie.

He revealed how some actors in the movie industry pay cash for movie roles in order to gain fame.

The actor made this known during an interview with the Punch where he recounted how actors now star in movies just for fame and not for the passion of the role.

He claimed that as a result of this, many producers have started demanding money from actors which is not the way it should be done.

In his words: “People just shoot movies anyhow these days. If you do not have enough money to shoot a movie, you stop. You don’t just shoot any movie. This is why most of us, the oldies, no longer partake in every film.

“With N200,000, some people will move to shoot a film. Actors now pay to partake in movies just for popularity, instead of them to be paid. And where there are no producers or directors that are professionally trained, they just take a space somewhere and they shoot a film.”

“When you act in movies that will not go anywhere, you do not expect to be applauded. These people eager to be on the screen are not trained, or paid, they do everything by themselves and they still pay for it.”

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Awurum started out acting in his church as well as his school so as of the time of graduation from college, he was already a good and versatile actor, he came into Nollywood taking only ‘serious’ roles, he later at a point in his career decided to do only comedy roles which in initial stage and conception of this idea, he was denied due to his “mean looks”.

In 2014, Awurum became a brand ambassador for multinational telecommunications company Globacom owned by Nigerian businessman Mike Adenuga.

  • Iyabo Ojo accuses Nigerian actors of promiscuity

Iyabo Ojo accuses Nigerian actors of promiscuity

Nollywood actress, Iyabo Ojo, has accused Nigerian actors of being promiscuous, saying she has never seen a faithful actor in the country before.

Yul Edochie raised the issue of Nigerian actors and actresses being faithful to their partners after revealing he’s married to his colleague Judy Austin after making her his side chick for months and welcoming a child with her.

Iyabo, speaking on the issue of actors and actresses being faithful to their partners, said she hasn’t seen a faithful actor in Nigeria before as it’s very hard for these actors to hold themselves and be faithful to their partners.

According to her, anyone married to an actor should buy a shock absorber because cheating is normal among Nigerian actors and it will be very hard to see a faithful one but as for her, she has never seen a faithful actor in Nigeria.

This issue of Yul and Judy cheating on his wife and finally making her his second wife has made us realize that indeed it’s hard to find a faithful actor in Nigeria because we all felt he was very responsible and respected his wife but that wasn’t the case.
