  • ‘Nigerian comedians cannot speak truth to power’- Wale Gates

‘Nigerian comedians cannot speak truth to power’- Wale Gates

UK based Nigerian comedian, Wale Gates has condemned Nigerian comedians for not being able to speak truth to power. Gates asserted that his desire is to be able to say whatever he wishes regardless of whose ox is gored. He added that this has prevented him from doing many shows in Nigeria. He made this known in an interview with ace broadcaster, Funmi Iyanda.

According to him:” Yeah, I am. To be honest, I don’t wanna do what they do and again I want to be free. That’s the dynamics of it. I hate that. Honestly, I want to look at powerful people and say [my mind]. I don’t like when comedians have to be stupid to make rich people laugh. I hate that thing. No, I don’t want to do that. In the Nigerian system, they do that.I want to be able to say what I want. Someone like Ali Baba, it’s taken him years to be able to do that. I don’t want to wait that long. I want to be able to speak to power now. Would I be able to do it in Nigeria? No. If I see something, I have to say it. The reason why Nigerian comedians can’t afford to be arrogant is that they need to conform so that money will come in” he said.

Wale was born in East London to Nigerian parents, but moved to Lagos, Nigeria with his parents as a child. He spent his early years in Primary school in Lagos and boarding School in Ogbomosho, Oyo state. After Secondary school, he gained admission into the University of Lagos and graduated with a Bsc in Economics. It was at the university while also in Theatre 15 (A stage drama production company in the university) as a stage actor, that he decided to launch out solo as a stand-up comic in October 2001

”The above woman has been going back and forth trying to blackmail me emotionally because she says I snubbed her husband’s messages. After failing to prove that I did that or that I know him personally, I urged her not to DM me on his behalf again if she has any regards for him. She went against my advice.

”I suspected she would so I have our entire chat history saved. This is d tail of it. It’s the dead of the night but this woman won’t just stop….. now this is a memo to whom it may concern; it’s easier to lie against me blatantly than to guilt trip me. If you try to make me feel bad I will make
you feel bad. I lost my mum exactly 12 months ago and part of my anger is that she always let sleeping dogs lie all d time.

”Now she’s not here to alter my temperament anymore so if you come for me, I will hug you tightly! We are all going to die someday! I’m not gonna spend my life manning the gates of anybody’s Insecurities!”

Bovi sends SOS to stranger who swapped his luggage mistakenly

Bovi, Nigerian ace comedian has sent an SOS to the stranger who mistakenly took his luggage after they disembarked from an Air Peace flight from Lagos to Benin yesterday.

    Read what he wrote below:

SOS!!! Dear friends, someone carried my bag instead of his yesterday upon landing in Lagos from Benin via air peace. We landed Lagos around 3pm. I carried his as well because I was one of the last to disembark. It was such a full flight and I didn’t board early so I had to keep my bag in an overhead cabin far from my seat. All efforts to get my bag have proven abortive. I tried to get my car keys out of the bag and realized the swap. Sadly I couldn’t find him. I have dropped his bag with the air peace customer care. If by chance you know this person, please ask him to do same and drop mine with air peace customer care. On the alternative, you can dm me as well and we take it from there. I’d be very grateful. Please! ??
