Segun Johnson reveals how top musicians really make their money

The singer and bandleader, Segun Johnson has opened up on the behind-the-scenes dealings of Nigeria’s top owambe musicians, revealing the unspoken rules that govern their lucrative performances at high-profile parties and events.

In a recent interview on The Teju Babyface Deep Dive Podcast, Johnson disclosed that these A-list musicians don’t necessarily charge a fixed performance fee. Instead, they set a target amount that they expect to earn from the party through “money spray” from guests.

According to Johnson, one well-known owambe artist reportedly told a client that they needed to make N50 million from the party, with no fixed charge or performance fee in place.

“If you want me at your party, I must make N50 million that day.” No fixed charge, no performance fee—just a clear monetary expectation from the party’s money spray.”

This approach according to him allows the musicians to potentially earn more than they would from a traditional performance fee, while also giving them a sense of control over their earnings.

Johnson also revealed that these top musicians often prioritize prestige over pay, turning down high-paying gigs if the guest list isn’t packed with influential or wealthy attendees. In some cases, they’ll even perform for free if they believe the event will attract the right crowd. As Johnson put it, “They know the kind of people who spray.”

  • Fresh details on late singer Mohbad’s second autopsy result emerge

Fresh details on late singer Mohbad’s second autopsy result emerge

A forensic pathologist who conducted a second autopsy on the late Nigerian singer, Mohbad have ruled out drug abuse as the cause, suggesting instead that a fatal allergic reaction might have occurred.

TheNewsGuru reports that Dr Uwom Eze,  the forensic pathologist during his testimony disclosed during Friday’s proceedings that no trace of illicit substance use was found during his medical evaluation.

Eze, while responding to a cross-examination led by Abiodun Kolawole of the African Women Lawyers Association,  stated that, “the deceased was found during the medical examination not to be indulging in hard drugs or drug abuse, as alleged.”

Rather than signs of substance misuse, Dr. Eze explained that Mohbad had been administered medications consistent with pain and allergy treatment. “He discovered Mohbad was given ‘regulated’ doses of antihistamine, a drug given to treat an allergy, and analgesics, or a painkiller, which clearly showed he was in pain at the time of death.”

However, the circumstances under which the injection was administered remain unclear. Dr. Eze noted that this critical detail was missing from available records.

He added that he examined an injury found on the back of Mohbad’s right arm for signs of deeper trauma but concluded it was unlikely to have caused death.

“Even a newborn baby won’t die from that injury. At the time I conducted the autopsy, it wasn’t even there, maybe because of the post-mortem changes on the body. I couldn’t tell how the injection was given, because I had already lost (his) fluids,” he said.

Eze also commented that the level of body decomposition hindered conclusive findings, but the possibility of a severe allergic reaction could not be discounted.

“Considering all the postmortem findings, including ancillary tests and available information, a major disruption of vital organ systems of the body with resultant fatality due to a severe and rapid hypersensitivity reaction to a substance administered by parenteral route is plausible,” he added.

After his testimony, Coroner, Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi, presiding at the Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court, said that a final ruling would be delivered at a later date, which would be communicated to all involved parties.

Mohbad, aged 26, died on September 12, 2023, reportedly after sustaining a minor arm injury and receiving an injection at his Lekki residence.

He was buried the next day, but after widespread public outrage, his body was exhumed on September 21 for an autopsy under the directive of the Lagos State Government. Initial results released in April 2024 were inconclusive due to moderate to severe internal decomposition.

Under questioning by the family’s counsel, Wahab Shittu (SAN), Dr. Eze pointed to questionable practices in the musician’s treatment, saying the medical care provided appeared to be a case of “medical misadventure.”

Burna Boy dragged to American court over theft

A Haitian music legend Fabrice Rouzier, has dragged controversial Nigerian recording artiste, Damini Ogulu, who is better known as Burna Boy to a New York court over copyright infringement.

TheNewsGuru reports that the lawsuit accuses the Nigerian singer’s feature on the song ‘4 Kampe II’ by French-Haitian singer Joe Gilles, also known as Joe Dwet File of copying elements from his 2002 hit ‘Je Vais’, including the story, composition, sound recording and visual presentation.

According to Rouzier in the sue, the first infringement occurred in late 2024, when Gilles released ‘4 Kampe’, which allegedly sampled ‘Je Vais’ without permission.

Rouzier said he issued a cease and desist letter at the time, after which Gilles allegedly “admitted to the accusations of infringement.”

Despite the warning, Gilles released ‘4 Kampe II’ featuring Burna Boy on March 28.

The plantiff added that despite his letter, the Grammy winner, reused his lyrics and melodies from ‘Je Vais’   including the French line “Cherie, ou sou sa kampe” (translated: “Darling, let’s do this in the standing position”) for the remix.

Rouzier said both artistes knowingly ignored the infringement claims and went ahead to profit from the track.

“Despite Burna Boy’s full knowledge of Gilles’ own admission to stealing from Rouzier, the duo has continued to directly engage in conduct that has caused the plaintiff serious damages, including lost profits, lost opportunities, and loss of goodwill,” the court documents read.

Rouzier described the conduct as “blatant,” stating that the lack of cooperation from both Gilles and Burna Boy compelled him to seek justice in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York.

He further prayed the court to award compensatory and punitive damages, reimburse attorney’s fees and legal costs, and issue an order prohibiting any further use of his persona, image, and likeness in connection with “4 Kampe” and “4 Kampe II.” Additionally, he wants the court to order the destruction of all copies of the disputed content.
