NUPRC workers challenge Management, demand good condition of service

Workers of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) have come out in their large numbers to protest against it management over issues bothering on poor handling of their welfare.

Placards with different inscriptions like, ‘we say no to hostile policies, remit our pension deductions, our lives and welfare matters, no to super inflated contracts, stop the intimidation of staff were sigthed when the protesting workers stormed the office of NUPRC in Abuja.

Addressing journalists after the peaceful protest on Tuesday, branch chairman of the workers’ union, Okechukwu Anya said the workers deductions are not remitted to the pension fund administrators (PFAs).

He also alleged that the management refused to pay staff claims even after registering them as some of the offices operate without light.

“We have situations where staff going on official jobs use their own money to run the jobs, put in staff claims since last year and the management has refused to pay back those staff claims even after registering the claims.

“We also have situations where staff are sent on transfer for over four to five months, they go and sort themselves

“The peaceful protest shows that, we are unhappy, we are desperate, we are frustrated. We have engaged our management for so long on topical issues that affects the staff and all our complaints have all fallen on deaf ears”

Anya, who is the NUPRC branch of
PENGASSAN, noted that if the management didn’t honour their demands, the workers will be pulled out of the terminals in the next 24 hours.

He also said: “There are situations where staff are sent on transfer for over four five months, they go and sort themselves out with their own money and the practice is that they should be paid within one week, yet they have not been paid.

“We have a situation where our office at Port Harcourt has gone on for one month without light. This is unacceptable.

“It is not the standard for a company that prides itself as Africa’s leading regulator, yet we don’t have light in our office for more than a month. It is unacceptable and we are registering our disgust.

“Our Lagos office has been running for months without water. We are angry because our management have refused to provide conducive atmosphere in line with International Labour Organisation prescription for management to provide good working environment.

“The staff are the people going to terminals, going to offshore, doing their best regulating the oil and gas industry and bringing a lot of benefits to the country and to the government. We cannot be sidelined”

Anya said as an affiliate of Trade Union Congress, it has taken necessary steps but no solution, ” The good thing is that the president of TUC, Comrade Festus Osifo is also our PENGASSAN president. We have written an official letter to him and communicated our position. We believe this time we are doing our protest, they will here our position and see where we go from here.”

Nig 2nd in Africa, fifth worldwide in organised crime – Gen Buratai

… first among West African countries

…as critical stakeholders insist that combining non-kinetic and kinetic methods could help checkmate organised crime

Ex-Chief of Army Staff, COAS, General Tukur Buratai, Retd has said Nigeria is rated number two in Africa and maintains fifth position in the world in organised crime.

Giving a further breakdown he said Nigeria also ranked second among 54 countries in Africa and first among 15 countries in West Africa.

While quoting the Global Organised Crime Index, Buratai, who spoke during a one-day international conference on organised crime organised by Igbinedion University Okada IUO, Buratai Centre for Contemporary Security Affairs in Abuja also disclosed that other affected countries included Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria.

He said, “Nigeria has a criminality score of 7.15 out of 1 to 10 and it is ranked 5th out of 193 countries. It is 2nd of 54 countries in Africa and 1st of 15 countries in West Africa according to the Global Organised Crime Index.

“As the index results show, the countries with the highest criminality levels are those experiencing conflict or fragility. The Democratic Republic of Congo was identified as the country most affected by organised crime, followed by Colombia, Myanmar, Mexico and Nigeria.

“Other high-scoring countries include Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, where conflict countries have decimated the formal economies, led to mass displacement and an influx of weapons.”

Other critical stakeholders also agreed that to effectively checkmate organised crime in Nigeria there’s need to quickly adopt both the kinetic and non kinetic approach to achieve success.

The international confab which was attended by ex-COAS, Lt Gen Abdulrahman Dambazau, Retd, another ex-COAS, Gen TY Buratai, all serving Service Chiefs, NSA former military top brass, the diplomatic corps and other critical stakeholders.

The Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Major General TA Lagbaja who was represented clearly stated in his goodwill message that the kinetic approach alone can no longer combat organised crime as the collaboration of community leaders, community dwellers and traditional institutions are needed to combat it and this part is the non kinetic approach.

He explained that “organised crime is like a wild fire and what can easily cage it is the non kinetic approach using community leaders, community dwellers, intelligence tools to gather credible information on how to checkmate organised crime.

“Kinetic approach is just 20percent while non kinetic is 80percent and the implication here is that you need people to allow the non kinetic approach to succeed.

“To this end, you need community leaders, people in the axis to achieve results particularly in the Niger Delta you cannot stop crude oil siphoning without the people assisting you.

In his brief submission, IUO Pro Chancellor, Professor Sheikh Ahmad Abdullahi said” I expect this conference to provide a blueprint to help curb organised crime in Nigeria and by extension Africa and worldwide.

“Before now the rate of crime was recorded arithmetically but now it is in geometric form so we need to think of the kinetic theory to use in combating organised crime.

“To checkmate the emerging threat we need to be ready to find ways and means to dislodge the threat be it organised or otherwise.

Former COAS and ex-minister of Interior, Lt Gen Abdulrahman Dambazau in his goodwill and also chaired the conference went down memory lane to the days 419, Boko Haram, the Italian Mafia and the history of organised crime.

The Keynote speaker, Chairman, National Police Commission, NPC and ex-IGP, Dr Solomon Arase who was represented by Prof Omorege Edobar gave a vivid picture of how organised crime started in Nigeria and on how to effectively combat it.

Arase in his presentation said, 419 of the early 1990s, Money Laundering,Ponzi Schemes are products of induced organised crime bearing semblance of Boko Haram in 2007-2009 which spread across North East, the Niger Delta militancy and the banditry in the North West.

  • The end has not come for Aregbesola in Nigerian politics – Owaale of Ikare

The end has not come for Aregbesola in Nigerian politics – Owaale of Ikare

The Owaale of Ikare, Oba Adefemi Adeleke Adegbite, has said those who think the end has come for the immediate past Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, in Nigerian politics and governance will be disappointed.

The monarch spoke during the weekend at the reception organised by the National Association of Old Students of Akoko Anglican Grammar School, Arigidi Akoko, Ondo State, for the former minister

Oba Adegbite maintained that Aregbesola has not reached the peak of his political career, noting that the former governor of the State of Osun still has many years to shine in Nigerian politics.

According to Oba Adegbite, Aregbesola has an innate Omoluabi virtue which makes him an outstanding public figure and a humanist.

“Aregbesola is a rare politician with innate Omoluabi virtue. He is responsible, transparent and humane. He is a blessing to many generations.

“Let me state that the end has not come for Aregbesola in Nigerian politics and governance. Those who thinks the end has come for him will be disappointed eventually. He has not reached the peak of his political career. The road to farm will not be blocked to a farmer that has God and cutlass. We shall all be alive to celebrate another good chapter of his life.”

Speaking at the event, Aregbesola appreciated his supporters, lovers and other people who have been welcoming him home after the completion of his tenure as the Minister.

“I thank God for enabling me to serve with distinction, honour and integrity as Minister and returning home to these receptions and tumultuous celebrations. The outpouring of love by the people, friends and associates fills me with the deepest emotions and never ceased to draw tears from eyes”, he stated.

The former governor maintained that he is a fulfilled man with happiness, saying it is a privilege to have served in various capacities.

He said: “Today, I am happy and fulfilled. It is by the grace of God and a great privilege to have been in a position of leadership three times and to have left indelible footprints on my paths and be celebrated in this manner.”

Aregbesola noted that the quality of education he received while growing up stimulated his education reform when he was the governor of the State of Osun.

He said: “I must also mention however, that the schools across Western Region at the time taught and instilled ethics, social etiquette, morals and leadership and produced these great people.

“This is a testament to a remarkable public education policy and programme of Chief Obafemi Awolowo and his people oriented political platform.

“When I became governor in Osun, I sought to replicate this idea. Our administration built 11 state of the art 3,000 capacity model secondary schools, in addition to rehabilitating and upgrading the existing ones.

“Each school has 72 classrooms which can each comfortably accommodate 49 students and six rooms for study groups. It is equipped with six laboratories, 36 toilets separated equally for boys and girls, two libraries for science and arts each, facility manager’s office, a bookshop and a sick bay.

“We introduced Opon Imo the tablet of Knowledge; a digital education tool, ethics and discipline in public schools and even established a state-wide agency on public school discipline. We introduced calisthenics and school feeding and health programme.

“Nevertheless, our commitment then was from the understanding that there is no alternative to a sound public foundation education.

“All governments must therefore know that no matter how attractive private schools may be, they will never be able to displace government funded public foundation education schools, if we really want to provide education to all the children and stimulate development from bottom up. It is a dream we must never give up on.”

The National President of the National Association of Old Students of Akoko Anglican Grammar School, Arigidi Akoko, Mrs Grace Ajayi, described Aregbesola as an icon, a man of vision, honour and integrity.

According to Ajayi, Aregbesola was celebrated for his outstanding performance in all the public offices he had occupied.

He said: “We are here today to celebrate an icon, a man of vision, honour, integrity, a generous man full of humour, a highly intelligent industrious man, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, ‘Areshow’ as he was called back in the school.”

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday in Abuja participated in a valedictory session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), and met with staff of the State House, as part of a countdown on his eight years of administration, with appreciation for all the support and loyalty.

In a statement issued by Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity, on Wednesday said, Buhari In his remark at the valedictory session held at the State House Council Chamber, thanked all the ministers for their steadfastness in pursuing the goals of the administration.

“In the cause of our years together, ranging from our newest addition to the oldest members of the team for the past seven and half years, we have differed on many issues. “For those of us that will not directly be in government, I know that I am one of such, I ask that we continue to provide our support, in whatever way we can, if called upon by our great party, All Progressives Congress (APC), that gave us the platform to stand and we must continue to support it in every way we can,’’ he said.

Breaking! NAFDAC bans importation of Indomie noodles

…over its alleged link to cancerous elements

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has said that importation of Indomie noodles to Nigeria has been banned following allegations of a cancer-causing chemical found in the noodles and non-registration of the agency.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) recalls health officials in Malaysia and Taiwan recently detected ethylene oxide, a compound in Indomie’s “special chicken” flavour noodles.

Ethylene oxide is a colourless, odourless gas that is used to sterilise medical devices and spices and is said to be a cancer-causing chemical.

The ministry of health in Malaysia noted that it examined 36 samples of instant noodles from different brands since 2022 and found that 11 samples contained ethylene oxide.

Both countries have since recalled the product.

Speaking about the development, Mojisola Adeyeye, NAFDAC director-general, said the agency would begin random sample tests of the noodles and other brands from May 2.

Speaking with Newsmen on Monday, Adeyeye said the NAFDAC started investigating once it got wind of the recall of the products by Taiwan and Malaysia authorities.

“Tomorrow, May 2, 2023, NAFDAC’s food safety and applied nutrition directorate will randomly sample Indomie noodles (including the seasoning) from the production facilities while post marketing surveillance directorate (will) samples from the markets,” she said.

The compound of interest is ethylene oxide, so the director, food lab services directorate has been engaged. He is working on the methodology for the analysis.”

The DG said the product is on the prohibition list of the federal government, adding that it is not registered by the agency and had been banned from importation to Nigeria years ago.
