Prostate Cancer: Stop being reactive, doctor tells Nigerian men

Dr. Bassey Nyom of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), on Wednesday, warned Nigerian men to desist from being reactive in prostate cancer care, but rather seek ways of its prevention.
Nyom, who gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Calabar, said it was unfortunate that Nigerians wait until they contract a disease before seeking treatment.
The doctor who is also a member of the Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN) called on every male, aged 40 and above, to get a Digital Rectile Examination (DRE), to prevent prostate cancer.
She said DRE was not expensive or painful but a bedside thing in which the doctor sticks his or her fingers in the anus of the man to assess the prostate gland to know if it is benignly large or cancerous.
According to her, after DRE, the doctor may decide to screen for Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) and Abdominal Pelvic Ultrasound to assess the gland further to determine the stage of the cancer, if found cancerous.
She maintained that if the stage of the cancer was still early, the man would have to undergo surgery or take chemotherapy drugs for life.
“DRE is one of the cheapest tests anyone can have, unfortunately, Nigerians are not preventive but reactive, as we wait to contract a disease first before visiting a doctor, which is dangerous.
“Prostate cancer can be hereditary, but there are no specific known causes other than risk factors such as being a man and over 40 years, a family history, drinking and the use of tobacco.
“It is important to note that different people that contract the disease show different symptoms such as difficulty in urinating and some may even have a catheter implanted, to enable them pass urine.
“Others urinate blood, some feel there is still some urine left when they urinate, some even wake up five to ten times every night to urinate only to produce very little quantity of urine and other symptoms,” she said.
Nyom added that any man with a family history of a male in the family that died of prostate cancer should get tested because early detection still remained the best way remedy for cancer care.
NAN reports that October is marked as the international breast cancer month, in which awareness is created of the effects of breast cancer and ways to prevent the condition.

Nigerian govt will not expose sponsors of terrorism – Presidency

Femi Adesina, spokesperson to President Muhammadu Buhari, has said the federal government is not interested in exposing sponsors of terrorism.

Adesina stated this during an interview on Channels Television on Monday.

Last week, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) included six Nigerians on its terror list.

But when Adesina was asked if Buhari would comment on the issue of terrorism at the United Nations Assembly, following the naming of six Nigerians as “sponsors of terrorism” in UAE, Adesina said the federal government’s focus will be on prosecution of suspects.

“Naming and shaming won’t be the motive. Rather, bringing malefactors to justice would be it. Nigeria is not interested in naming and shaming anybody. Rather, it wants to bring them to justice.

“You will see that the United Arab Emirates has given some names, and the attorney-general of the federation has responded to that matter, saying that in due course, all these people will have their days in court.

“Rest assured that these people will be dragged before justice and justice will have its way,” he said.

  • US jails another Nigerian, Bamidele Muraina, for stealing COVID-19 benefits of unemployed citizens

US jails another Nigerian, Bamidele Muraina, for stealing COVID-19 benefits of unemployed citizens

A Nigerian, Bamidele Muraina, has been jailed in the United States for hacking into tax preparation firms and filing fraudulent unemployment benefit claims and tax returns using stolen personally identifiable information.

The benefits were funds from programs meant to assist American workers and families seeking to make ends meet during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Kurt R. Erskine.

Muraina, 35, reportedly stole about $280,000 in unemployment benefits and “sought refunds from the IRS exceeding $2.6 million from 2018 through 2020.”

He was sentenced by U.S. District Judge William M. Ray II to five years and ten months in prison to be followed by three years of supervised release.

Muraina was also ordered to pay $561,125.62 in restitution.

He was sentenced along Gabriel Kalembo, a previously convicted fraudster who laundered the fraudulent assets.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating effect on us all. The enterprise created by these serial criminals further victimized our citizenry by robbing them of financial resources that were intended to help them,” Special Agent in Charge Steven Baisel, U.S. Secret Service Atlanta Field Office, said.

“Thanks to our judicial system, justice has been served.”

According to a statement from the US Department of Justice, “between May 9, 2020 and May 16, 2020, Muraina used stolen personally identifiable information from Washington residents to submit false claims for unemployment insurance benefits in Washington.

“Muraina’s false claims exploited a federal COVID-19 pandemic relief program created by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which expanded eligibility for unemployment benefits and provided an additional unemployment benefit of $600 per week.

“Based on Muraina’s fraudulent claims submitted in the names of approximately fifty Washington residents over a one-week span, the State of Washington issued more than $280,000 in unemployment benefits.

“Muraina directed fraudulent funds from his unemployment benefits scheme and tax fraud scheme to be deposited into bank accounts set up by co-conspirators, including Gabriel Kalembo, who was convicted in 2017 of conspiracy to commit wire and bank fraud in the Northern District of Georgia.

“Kalembo recruited Zambian nationals to travel to the United States on tourist visas to incorporate sham corporations in Georgia and open business bank accounts in the names of those corporations.

“After the fraudulent funds were deposited into those accounts, Kalembo laundered the funds by cashing money orders purchased with debit cards linked to the accounts.”
