Family of Nigerian lady jailed in Dubai for exposing maltreatment of Nigerians cries for help

Dinchi Lar, a Nigerian lady who was jailed for one year in the United Arab Emirates, UAE, is yet to be regain freedom, following her incarceration for exposing the maltreatment of Nigerians at Dubai airports.

The victim’s family stated made this known during a protest on Sunday in Abuja after the Dubai authorities sentenced her to one-year imprisonment.

Under the UAE cybercrime law, taking a video or photograph of someone without his/her consent and posting such on social media is an offence punishable with one-year jail term

On August 31, Lar had taken to her Twitter page to share photos and videos of herself and other people she identified as Nigerians being detained at the Dubai international airport.

She wrote, “I am at the Dubai international airport and myself and some tiger Nigerians with valid visas are being held in a room hours after arriving with no explanation and no information on what we can do. Please help me. There is more than 20 of us.”

They are capitalising on the fact that she made a video then posted it on her Twitter timeline to narrate the ordeal

In a series of posts that followed, Lar accused the airport authorities of humiliating Nigerians.

On Saturday, her family, in a post by one @jerrydoubles, said she was sentenced for exposing the maltreatments of Nigerians in Dubai.

The post read in part, “It is sad and regrettably heartrending to tell you all that Dinchi Lar was sentenced on 12th Oct 22, to 1yr in jail in Dubai. Her family is devastated and Nigeria didn’t save her. Her sentence came from the backdrop that she got a family visa to travel. But in fact, she was traveling with her sister. It got messy and complicated. She was released on arrival after being detained for several hours, only to be sentenced when she was returning to Nigeria.

“They are capitalising on the fact that she made a video then posted it on her Twitter timeline to narrate the ordeal. They said it’s cybercrime in their country. She went ahead to delete it. Still, that didn’t soften them. Now she’s jailed. We are planning a protest at the Dubai consulate in Abuja.”

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) gathered that some family members and friends protested on Sunday against her sentencing, stating that she was “detained in Dubai since September 6.”

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, in a release by its Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, said Lar was convicted under the UAE cybercrime law.

The release read in part, “Under the UAE cybercrime law, taking a video or photograph of someone without his/her consent and posting such on social media is an offence punishable with one-year jail term or a fine between approximately $69,000 and $137,000, or both jail term and fine.

“Ms Lar made and tweeted the viral video of the UAE official at the airport. She was sentenced on the 12th of October and has 15 days to appeal the judgment. Ms Dunchi Lar can still appeal the ruling and has been assured of moral and consular support by the Nigerian mission in Dubai.”

Tacha bewails poor treatment of Nigerians in Dubai

Disqualified BBNaija Housemate in 2019, Anita Natacha Akide, better known as Tacha, has lamented the ill rate Nigerians are treated outside the shore of the country.

Sharing experience on her recent travel to Dubai, Tacha lamented how Nigerians are sent back from Dubai regardless of their valid visas or ticket.

She tweeted: “Dubai is really sending Nigerians back to Nigeria even with their valid visas!!! And on top of that when you reach Nigeria!! You’ll be paying an additional fee of N31,000 for whatever reason I don’t even know!!!!

“I can’t even believe it after spending those long hours in transit!! After paying and getting your VISA!! Buying ticket too!! Make Dubai plans And you’ll just be sent back like that!!! Gosh! The humiliation Nigerians face outside Nigeria ehn!! It is just dispiriting.”

Tacha was a housemate of the BBNaija 4. On Day 90, she was ejected from the house.

She was disqualified from the reality show for assaulting her housemate, Mercy.

Mercy also got two strikes as a result of the fight they both had earlier today.

Tacha was the first housemate to be disqualified from the 2019 BBNaija reality show.

Big Brother also reiterated the rules of the reality show while addressing the housemates.

He said, “BBNaija rule book clearly states in Article 18 sub-section 1 that, other types of violence, including provocation, goading, bullying, and victimisation may be punished by Big Brother in any way Big Brother chooses.”

During their altercation earlier in the day, Big Brother had invited both housemates to the Diary Room, where he cautioned them.

However, in spite of his caution, the duo continued to exhibit violent behaviour, with Tacha acting out violently against Mercy, while Mercy visibly restrained herself and was also prevented from being physically violent.

The organisers, Multichoice, also issued a statement to the effect.

Their statement read, “MultiChoice and the show producers, are committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all housemates in the Big Brother house at all times. We view incidents such as occurred with Tacha and Mercy in a very serious light and will continue to take necessary action against housemates who break the strict rules of Big Brother.”
