STRIKE: It’s no retreat no surrender, stock your houses with food, organised labour cautions Nigerians

Organised Labour has advised Nigerians to stock up their homes ahead of a nationwide strike billed to commence October 3 as it’s going to be no retreat no surrender.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Emmanuel Ugboaja said this during a joint briefing addressed by the President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, Festus Osifo on Tuesday in Abuja.

The labour leaders said the National Executive Councils (NEC) of the NLC and TUC in their various meetings “deeply analysed the current situation in the country, taking into cognisance the extensive hardships and deprivation afflicting our citizens across all states of the federation and unanimously condemned the apparent conscious lethargy and tardiness in handling the consequences of its petrol price hike on Nigerians.”

Barring last minute intervention by the Federal Government, the organised labour has directed all workers in Nigeria to withdraw their services from their respective workplaces commencing from the 3rd of October.

It directed all affiliates and state councils to immediately start mobilising for industrial action, urging them to organise street protests and rallies until the government responded positively to its demands.

The TUC didn’t take part in the warning strike, saying it preferred to dialogue with the government before resorting to industrial action.

Some of the demands put before the government by labour included wage award and tax exemptions and allowances to public sector workers.

Others are: provision of Compressed Natural Gas buses, release of modalities for the N70bn for Small and Medium Enterprises, release of officials of the National Union of Road Transport Workers by the police, Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria crisis in Lagos, among others.

The demands also included the immediate reversal of all anti-poor policies of the Federal Government, including the recent hike in PMS price, increase in public school fees, the release of the eight months withheld salaries of university teachers and workers as well as the increase in Value Added Tax (VAT).

On Friday the Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong secured the release of the elected members of NURTW.

The release of the officials was one of the key demands of the NLC. The other is the wage award.

Speaking during the joint press conference at the end of an emergency NEC to review discussions with government, Ajaero said there was no “disagreement between Labour and government on the existence of massive suffering, impoverishment and hunger in the country as a result of the hike in the price of Petrol which demands an urgent need for remedial action.”

The labour leader said the government had “totally abdicated its responsibility” and had “shown gross unwillingness to act abandoning Nigerian people and workers to excruciating poverty and affliction.”

According to him, the federal government has continued to “grandstand and forestall all avenues to peaceful dialogue with organised labour on ways to save Nigerians from the huge hunger and suffering experienced across the nation as a result of the unconscionable hike in the price of petrol (PMS) by the government.”

Ajaero said: “The National Executive Councils (NEC) of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) in their various meetings deeply analyzed the current situation in the country, taking into cognisance the extensive hardships and deprivation afflicting our citizens across all states of the federation unanimously condemned the apparent conscious lethargy and tardiness in handling the consequences of its Petrol Price hike on Nigerians.

Chicago varsity: Atiku says I hope record won’t cause Nigerians heart attack

The 2023 Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has raised concerns over the academic records of President Bola Tinubu saying that he hopes it would not make Nigerians a heart attack.

Atiku expressed these concerns through his Media Aide, Paul Ibe, who has implied that President Tinubu may be harbouring undisclosed information about his academic history, specifically concerning Chicago State University.

“It should be now obvious even to the blind that Tinubu is hiding something in his records at the Chicago State University, and even elsewhere.

“I do hope whatever it may be, it will not be of a scope that will give Nigerians a heart attack. Nigerians will soon see the true position of Atiku on the records of Tinubu at CSU. It is just a matter of time.” Ibe said in a statement.

These remarks came in response to a legal motion initiated by Tinubu, contesting an order from the Northern District of Illinois that mandated Chicago State University to release his academic records within a strict two-day time frame.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Katsina, ASP Aliyu Abubakar-Sadiq.

The police said that the video was not only misleading but aimed at tarnishing the good image of the police.

”After a thorough investigation, it was revealed that the bags of rice seen in the video in the police motor vehicle were intercepted and recovered from some unscrupulous entity.

“The unscrupulous entities fraudulently obtained more than the necessary share of the palliatives and the police returned them to the venue of distribution.

“The video misrepresents the facts and attempts to exploit the good efforts of the officers deployed to the venue to provide support, security coverage and ensure the smooth run of the event,” the police said.

Current hardship, may lead to serious crisis in Nigeria – PDP BoT warns

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has warned that the level of poverty in the country is capable of snowballing into a serious crisis, if not urgently addressed.

The board, which met in Abuja, on Thursday, also rejected the judgement of the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC), which upheld the election of President Bola Tinubu.

Commending its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, for following due process of the law, the BoT said it was confident that the Supreme Court has the capacity and courage to right the “wrongs” and correct the “errors” contained in the judgement, in the interest of the unity, stability and corporate existence of the country.

The Board also decried the state of the nation, noting serious concerns over what it called “excruciating hardship, worsening insecurity and general sense of apprehension and despondency” across the country, caused by the hasty implementation of ill-planned policies of the APC administration.

The calls were contained in a communiqué, which was read by the BoT chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, after the 75th meeting of the body at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja.

The meeting, which was attended by leaders of the PDP, said it thoroughly reviewed the state of affairs of the nation and the party and resolved accordingly.

The communiqué said: “The BoT restates its rejection of the judgement of the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) in upholding the declaration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner of the February 25, 2023 Presidential election, in spite of the evidence clearly pointing to the contrary.

“The BoT is also monitoring and studying the outcome of cases in various election courts with regards to their level of adherence and respect to the Rule of Law and evidence before such court.

“The BoT is resolved to take urgent steps to resists the current manifest desperation by the APC to turn Nigeria into a One-Party State.

“The BoT Commended the PDP Presidential Candidate, His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar for following due process of the law in his quest to retrieve the Presidential Mandate freely given to him at the February 25, 2023 Presidential election.

“The BoT is confident in the capacity and courage of the Supreme Court to ultimately and decisively right the wrongs and correct the manifest errors contained in the Judgement of the PEPC in the interest of the unity, stability and corporate existence of our Country.

“The BoT expressed serious concerns over the excruciating hardship, worsening insecurity and general sense of apprehension and despondency across the country occasioned by the hasty implementation of ill-planned policies of the overtly insensitive APC administration.

“The BoT is seriously worried over the continued fall in the value of the Naira arising from the ill-implemented policies of the APC with attendant devastating negative effect on the economy resulting in agonizing high costs and unbearable pressure on families.

“The BoT laments that the APC is pushing Nigerians to the wall and worry that the level of poverty and anger in the polity over the suppressive rule of the APC is capable of snowballing into a serious crisis if not urgently addressed.

“The BoT observed that nation is currently in a precarious situation under the APC and Nigerians look unto the PDP for solution and direction at this time.”

The PDP BoT, however, assured Nigerians that despite the challenges, the major opposition party remains united, stronger and more determined to continue to lead the charge to rescue democracy and return the nation to the path of credible elections, Rule of Law, national cohesion and economic prosperity.

Party leaders at the meeting included BoT Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara; former national chairman, Senator Ahmed Markarfi; former BoT chairman, Senator Walid Jibrin; Senator Ben Obi, and Senator Stella Omu, among others.

Nigerian singer, Paul Okoye foldly called Rudeboy has advised Nigerians on how to manoeuvre the current economic challenges in the country.

Paul, one half of P-Square brothers, in a recent Instagram Live, shared his perspective on how individuals should navigate the current hardship.

With the cost of living on the rise and economic pressures impacting many, Rudeboy stressed the importance of adjusting one’s lifestyle to align with the changing times.

He urged citizens to make prudent financial decisions and prioritise essential needs while temporarily reevaluating discretionary spending.

“Please stop asking for help, the only help you can give yourself is to adjust your lifestyle,” said Paul Okoye.

“I always tell people, the best help you can give yourself with what’s happening in the country is to adjust your lifestyle. If you’re somebody that goes to a club or bar every weekend and you drink five bottles, reduce it to one bottle and you will be fine.

PEPT judgement: ‘Respect the judiciary’ – CAN tells Nigerians

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has advised Nigerians to accept the verdict of the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal.

In a judgement delivered on Wednesday by the five-man panel of the PEPT led by Haruna Tsammani, held that the case brought before it by Peter Obi of Labour Party, and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party lacks merit, thereby upholding the victory of President Tinubu in the Feb 25 Presidential election.

Reacting to the judgement, the Kaduna State chairman of CAN, Reverend John Hayab, urged Nigerians to allow the rule of law to take its course in the overall peace and unity of Nigeria.

“We should, as Nigerians, respect the judicial system for the interest of peace and harmonious coexistence of the country,” Hayab began.

The cleric added: “Nigerians must not allow themselves to be used to divide the country, based on political differences, but unite and work with the person the court rules in his favour to lead the affairs of the land for development to thrive in Nigeria.

“Politicians come and go but the country remains. Therefore, we must think inward and not allow some selfish individuals to put the country into confusion that could lead to chaos that can result in loss of lives and destruction of property, which could set the country backward, instead of consolidating Nigeria’s progress.”

Hayab urged politicians and all Nigerians to accept the judgment of the tribunal, even if the judgment did not go according to their expectations

  • Why there is rivalry between Nigerians and South Africans

Why there is rivalry between Nigerians and South Africans

Nigerian singer and rapper, Ice Prince Zamani, has described the rivalry between Nigerians and South Africans on social media as a “family feud.”

The artist claimed the two nations want nothing but the best for each other.

He stated this while appearing in the latest episode of the Afrobeats Podcast hosted by British-Nigerian media personality, Adesope Olajide, AKA Shopsydoo.

Ice Prince said, “I think the rivalry between Nigerians and South Africans is just brotherly love. You know how in a family, brothers always go at each other? I guess that’s what it is.

“We are literally brothers. We’re from the same father and mother; Nigerians, South Africans, Ghanaians, Kenyans. As long as you are black, you are African. We’re one and the same.

“So, the way brothers logged heads in the family, I guess that’s what it is. It’s not a real issue. South Africans want to see Nigerians do better. Nigerians want to see South Africans do better. I guess that is what it is. We are just pushing ourselves as long as it doesn’t get too far where the beef leads to some ugly stuff.

“And so far, there’s not been any major beef. By God’s grace, there will never be. We are literally the same.”

ActionAid Nigeria, AAN, an NGO, on Friday, hailed President Bola Tinubu over 8-point Agenda that gives hope to poor and excluded Nigerians.

According to AAN, the initiative by Tinubu is visionary and described it as “a crucial step towards addressing the pressing issues affecting the poor and excluded, especially women.”

The Country Director, AAN, Andrew Mamedu, commended the President for taking the step to carry every citizen along in the scheme of things.

However, he called on the President to make a clear measurable indicators for each agenda.

“However, we urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government to incorporate clear and measurable indicators of achievement for each agenda.

“Transparent and quantifiable milestones are essential to ensure effective monitoring and evaluation of progress, which, in turn, will enhance accountability and public trust.

“ActionAid Nigeria also calls upon President Tinubu to encourage all tiers of government responsible for implementing the 8-Point Agenda to partner with the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) actively.

“CSOs possess valuable expertise, community rootedness, and the ability to mobilise citizens for effective engagement in the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of these crucial initiatives”, he said.

Meanwhile, he (Mamedu)  assured that ActionAid Nigeria is optimistic about the positive impacts that the 8-Point Agenda can have on the lives of Nigerians and the organisation looks forward to working closely with the government and fellow CSOs to turn these ambitious plans into tangible actions that will improve the well-being of Nigerians.
